The Bay Gourmet - Cafe in North Wonthaggi, Australia
Was great as the place is not on a main road.
☕👌⛱️☀️
Great coffee and really friendly staff!
$22.50 for a party pie tasted like cat food, decided to up the anti and purchase a bacon and egg sandwich which was served with raw bacon and a silicone like egg and the pig was still oinking, in all seriousness I was thoroughly disappointed and would not recommend.
So good! The food was hot and tasty and the service came with a smile. Best value cup of tea on the coast.... an enormous pot kept me going all lunchtime. Casual and clean, this is my new local cafe. I will be back within days
It’s a cute place but if the barista isn’t going to check the temperature of the milk and serve up a scolding/ burnt cup of joe- they should not be behind the machine! - presumably the older woman who ownes the place?Just a constructive note from a fellow barista.
Nice coffee with an abundance of sweet and savoury options from a lunch or snack.
Food was overpriced and not good at all. Don’t mind paying a bit more at cafes at touristy places but expect food to be decent at least. The only good thing was the Coffee.
On a holiday. This seemed to be the only place open. In hindsight, could have stopped at any cafe along the bay. Cafe is mid town. Ordered BAY OMLETTE. It was $16 but was asked at the counter to add salmon or bacon.. bacon wasn’t worth the additional $5. Coffee was normal - nothing spectacular. It’s ok if you’re here once off. Fairly ordinary food. Do not order bay omlette if you enjoy something spicy - could barely taste the fetta. Looks good only on menu. Big brekky had by friends was relatively ok.
Nice coffee and freshly baked muffins - I had a savoury muffin which was served with a generous amount of butter and tomato relish. Staff also very lovely. Family friendly (although not sure if there are nappy change facilities). Lots of gluten free options too.
Supporting local business.Spent the weekend down in Venus Bay. Cute and cozy little cafe right in the middle of town.Friendly service and yummy food!If youre looking for a nice drive and place to visit on your next getaway, highly recommend this place!!
The only cafe in town. Friendly service, but really overpriced and food was just average.
Friendly staff, great coffee & yummy homemade food. It gets very busy during holiday periods but is well worth the wait.
DO NOT RECCOMEND THIS PLACE.First of all, the menu was incorrectly priced. Menu price on their system was different to hand out menus, was overcharged in an unfair mannerFor a 22 dollar egg benedict I excpected good quality food, but was given 2 pieces of white toast with watered down hollandaise sauce, which was an absolute let downThe iced coffee did feel overpriced at 8 dollars, but it was quite adequate and the ice cream was a nice touch, which was appreciated. To conclude, for a 30 dollar eggs Benedict and coffee, it was very below average and an terrible food quality management.
The only place we could find open in the morning in Venus Bay. Coffee is good, but the prices are up there, for ordinary dishes ($14 for a breaky toastie thing with bacon and egg, $7 for banana bread, $11 pie). The homemade cabinet items looked really good. As another reviewer mentioned, prices aren’t listed, which is irritating - we have to ask. I don’t understand the mentality behind not displaying prices - does it make for better sales? On our last day there I ordered an iced coffee. After paying, the lady didn’t say anything (literallynot even a thank youso I just waited next to the coffee machine where they were handing out coffees. After waiting a while, I decided to go to the car to get something as I waited. Came back to the same spot and waited yet some more. As I walked out to the car again I noticed an iced coffee standing on the ledge at the juice bar instead of inside, so I checked with the staff there, and it was the one I ordered. It would have been nice to have been told to wait there upon purchase :)I heard the barista lady call out a coffee order - “Vi, or Vee, oh whatever” - and understandably, the customer didn’t look too pleased when she picked up her coffee. The barista then rolled her eyes at her colleague as the customer left. Never forget you are on stage and there is most likely someone watching you, especially as they wait in line!
Walked in, said “Hello”. Old bat said nothing. I said “2 medium caps take-away”. Old bat said “$12”. I fell on the floor, got up, paid. Coffees were ok but nothing special.
The Standpipes MC rolled up for a nice morning tea on our Cape Pat run. The Bay were only serving cabinet food but it was a nice selection and pretty tasty, albeit a bit pricey. The lady running the show was bloody great and to deal with 7 different coffee and food orders (plus other patronsand get them out so swiftly was great job!
Being an off season and quite day the options weren’t as wide as normal. However, there were still plenty of baked options of pies, sausage rolls, bagels etc. I did notice a sensational looking vanilla slice and a lovely selection of home baked slices including a caramel slice. Most of all, the service of the very friendly lady made this a comfortable and enjoyable experience. I would also like to add that she was very kind on offering a gluten free toasted sandwich option. Couldn’t resist a take away homemade gluten free banana bread.
Great little place for brunch almost every morning. Family friendly and dog friendly establishment. Very friendly staff and just a quick walk from the beach and most accommodations in Venus bay proper. Definitely will be back with family and friends.
Really delicious coffee and breaky. Super friendly staff and a lovely venue. Looking forward to our next visit.
Great barrista. Coffee is really good. Friendly service. Going back to try them homemade cakes and slices
Though l only stayed one night, l was impressed by the cabin, it was clean and well maintained, also the camp was close to shops.
What a great asset to Venus Bay.....wonderful choice of food & refreshments. Great coffee & service with a smile. Lovely selection of homemade relishes, sauces & jams plus hampers & novelty items. Very dog friendly too!
Food is overpriced, wait times are long and when you do finally get your food, its very mediocre. Shame, place has so much potential. Coffee was OK
"Sausage Roll...more like a Spring Roll" : my partner. Vegan Roll was delicious but expensive for $9. There were no prices on either. I would recommed the bird and the wolf, or walkie kisok.
Went there for a late lunch with my family including 2 small children. Staff was about to close shop but kindly offered to serve us and let us finish in our own time before shutting down. This was really appreciated. And also to be noted that sandwiches themselves were very tasty! Thank you to the staff there.
No prices listed which comes as a surprise when ordering.A ‘babycino’ cost $2.50Coffee was one of the worst I’ve had with no foam and burnt coffee taste...we were the only customers. It shouldn’t be that hard to make a nice coffee on that machine.Very disappointed.
Ahh peak times and there not serving breakfast! What! They only do lunch and brekkie. Only overpriced toasties and a 15 minute wait to be served at the counter.. With 4 people in front of us. Nice place. Good potential. Just Lazy.
Very disappointed in the experience. Food was overpriced, took the wife and two kids and cost $70. Owner was not at all accommodating and when I asked if they did kids pancakes I was told “you will have to buy the full serve darl” and for $18 was definitely not worth it. I had the big breakfast and it was again sadly not worth $28. My wife had scrambled eggs and was overpriced at $18. Coffee was watery. The young waitress was very accommodating and present to deal with. All in all food was ok but definitely not gourmet. Don’t mind spending $70 for a good breakfast and experience but I would recommend driving 20 minutes to Inverloch instead.Hopefully given some of the other reviews I’ve read on this site the owners can take some constructive feedback and perhaps amend the cost and make for a better experience.
Really disappointing experience. The prices were extreme and the food was just average. Worst of all was the experience. Why at 8 on a Sunday is it the appropriate time to vacuum the shop. Couldnt talk over it and the ambience was killed. Really felt like wed wasted our money. If the owner reads this maybe a (quietbroom would be a better tool for the job or even better do it at the end of the day as is industry norm. Also prices arent listed which makes for a big shock when it comes to paying
Unfortunately we had a pretty disappointing visit. The menu was small which is understandable but the prices are very high. That said, thats not a deal breaker if the food is of the same calibre, unfortunately it really wasnt. We were waiting for our food and after 2 tables who were arrived and were seated after us had been served, eaten and left and after another 1 was served and were eating their food, we asked after our food. An hour after we sat down we got our food with the explanation that "everyone showed up at the same time and the kitchen was overloaded" referring to the customers and which didnt make sense given that there were only a handful of tables occupied, almost all of which came after us. There was no other acknowledgement that the food was late, it was just an offhanded comment. We were served our three meals - the chips were overcooked and cold. The steak was cold, the bacon was cold and tough, the toast for all of us was barely toasted and soggy and the hashbrown was the same. We were really disappointed with the service too (the young server was great though, and was concerned when our food continued to not be served to us). We were willing to look past the general local consensus that the prices didnt meet the quality of the food and service but it appears that we should have listened. I hope they are able to improve as we did take the time to explain our issues and experience. Good luck guys.
The meals were tiny for the value. We got calamari and it came out with 4 pieces and a bit of salad no chips. Also for $25 the fish and chips had 2 small pieces of fish with tiny salad very disappointing.
A great cafe that keeps getting better. So grateful to have this cafe in Venus, where I have been coming all my life. Very good and consistent coffee (with all available variants), super friendly staff and very enjoyable food. Toilets are spotless, great courtyard too. Keep up the good work.
The worst breakfast Ive ever had. My family waited over an hour for our food, with no appology or reason. Ordered smashed avo which was 2 slices of supermarket bread smothered in a brownish avacado with undercooked poached eggs. On top of that I paid $3 for for side of mushrooms which I got 6 of and were raw, $3 for side of spinach which was a fork full and $3 for a hashbrown which was undercooked. Wife got 1 bacon rasher with her undercooked fried eggs. Kids had overcooked pancakes which were dry and inedible. Would give it a negative rating if I could.
Spent over 30 minutes in a near empty shop waiting for our meals. Ordered the salt and pepper squid salad and arrived with only 4 tiny pieces of squid and limp pre cut salad that was easily just a few cents worth, for $18! The shoestring fries with the burger were rock solid and had clearly been heated and reheated multiple times. Wedges were nice and the breaky sandwich was fine. I can understand taking a while because this is a beach town and it’s summer, same with higher prices as there is little competition and one must cover the cost of getting the food out here. But at least try and serve good food. Waitress was really friendly and the place was clean, appealing and inviting, but be prepared for slow and reheated food that’s way overpriced.
Great coffee both times, and a well presented interior with good seating for our group of seven. Tasty breakfast options too!
Well presented Cafe near the beach. Very family friendly and dogs welcome too. Relaxing atmosphere to sit with a coffee and a bite from their great assortment of food.. also try some of their large range of condiments
Visited her for breakfast. Great place to take the dog as they have an undercover sitting area that dogs are allowed in. Staff here are friendly enough but the food here is definitely not Gourmet.. I wouldnt even put it in a take way category. I had the big breakfast and a mixed berry smoothie, Id rate the breakfast a 2/10 and the smoothie a 1/10, the smoothie tasted like it was made with water.. it was nearly undrinkable. When youre use to the food in Melbourne and the peninsula this place doesnt even compare to a fast food truck.
2 - Sausage rolls for $18.00, I was thinking theyd want to be nice for that money, mine was OK but my wifes was burnt on the bottom, not good enough for $9.00 each which is twice as much as they should be. Be a good idea to put prices on things Id rather know before than be shocked later.
I can only vouch for the coffee, which was consistently good. The staff were nice and accommodating to our requests. The venue looks welcoming and there is plenty of space for families looking to dine inside. In addition to food, there looks to be an assortment of condiments available for purchase/take away.
I’m only giving this café one star because there is no option to give it none.I run a small business and know how important it is to be friendly to your customers. My partner and I arrived at this café looking forward to a nice brunch.None of the staff acknowledged us even though there was only a few people in the café.We just walked around looking for the menus. When we went to order they said the breakfast menu had stopped at 11am and lunch won’t start until 12pm.Ironically, we could have ordered at 10:45am when we arrived. If the staff had have acknowledged us at the start and told us to take a seat, order at the counter and that breakfast/ brunch was closing at 11am( you know do the basic hospitable things), we could have supported this small business. In sum, terrible service and unfriendly vibes.Disappointing and required a review.
My wife and I were on a day trip to Venus Bay and were looking to have a coffee. We went into the shop not realising it was closed! The owner was more than happy to make us a coffee and have a chat about the local area. Coffees were great and would recommend to anyone down that way. Finally to the owner, “Thank you”.
Gluten free banana bread was the best I have tasted and made me up a gluten free toasty, even had friendly staff what more could you ask for.
Friendly staff, wonderful hospitality, and great food and coffee. There’s a lovely outdoor area and the cafe is baby friendly!! Big ticks from our family, we will definitely return!
The Bay Gourmet has the best chai ever! I was so excited! The almond milk rocked and I was also super excited to see that they use bon soy! We loved our breakfast here and the staff were gorgeous. Thank you for a lovely experience. A must visit if you are in Venus Bay!
I hate buying coffee when I’m away and it’s not up to scratch... Their coffee is banging!! Every day of our holiday we returned to Bay Gourmet. Beautiful food and Bridget remebered our name, making us feel like a local. Great dining area outside. Loved it. Loved it. Thanks guys.
Amazing! Absolutely loved the coffee, the food and friendly staff!!! Have been coming to VB for years, it’s soooo great to finally see (and go toand upbeat hip cafe that caters to all foodies AND dietary requirements. Well done Bay Gourmet, can’t wait to come back next school holidays!
3 stooges working in the shop, no other customers in line, and still took 15 mins to serve up 2 large coffees for a measly 12 bucks. Come for wait, leave with disappointment. In the absence of choice, this business may very well continue to thrive.
By far the worst cafe i have been to. Spent $55 for 2 breakfasts and 2 drinks ( a little bit over priced compared to normal but that was fine as i was expecting a really nice breakfastwe both had a tinny bit of bacon that was cold and a little triangle of bread under our scrambled eggs which were nothing special at all. i was also missing my mushroom and my expensive iced chocolate just tasted like regular milk out of my fridge at home. I never write things like this but after my experience i would like to inform people not to waste there money like I did
1. Waited 15 mins for our coffee. Skipped our queue for coffee and was told that I’m not patient. That’s not an excuse for your first day of operation.2. Coffee sucks taste like milk from Coles.Worst service ever would close down in 2 months if you’re in the CBD.Work on your service!
