Petite eatery for small plates with Berber-style flavors served at a bar by a central kitchen.
What wonderful wonderful food. Service was amazing, she was so friendly ans nice. Some of the best food Ive had for months. So highly recommended. Ill be coming back. Thank you all :)
Delicious dips and vegetables! The pretzel was just magnificent and the cauliflower was extra tasty! The chicken is also soooo tender!!!! For dessert the pistachio cake and the baklava are must try
A really enjoyable meal and experience. The staff and cooks operate like they are on the high of a recently opened restaurant, despite doing this for 6 years! The atmosphere is great as you watch the grill in front of you. Everything we had was out of this world good and the staff will guide you through the menu (the staff really are amazing too). Great drinks, great wine. Get an extra dip or two, the naan is fantastic!
Food is incredible tasty, particularly recommend the Jewish bagel and the cauliflower dish, and the dips (everything really). Not a fan of the brunette waitress with northern accent who made me feel very rushed and pressured to buy drinks but that still did not detract from the awesome vibe (other waiters seemed lovely!)
Having already visited the ‘sister restaurant’ Palomar, we just had to visit The Barbary. Pata Negra neck, octopus, cauliflower were all particular highlights. Wine list was well recommended by the waiter to work with our dishes. Every. Single. Mouthful was a ‘wow’ moment.
We ate here last night. This is one of the best dinners I can remember in a long time. The staff were friendly. The food was delivered at a good pace, interesting, hot and perfectly spiced. The ambience was good. Not too loud, I cant wait to go back.
The experience was amazing. The staff were really friendly and helped out with recommendations from the menu. We decided to go with a surprise me kind of style and every dish that was picked out by the staff was amazing. A really good place to have a celebratory meal and 10/10 would come back again!
The food was really good but it’s a little noisy (very loud music). They asked politely if they could get back their seats 1 hour (!after we came in (we had a reservationso we felt a little rushed. Not so nice when you spent a lot of money. The seats are not very comfy either as you can only sit at the bar.
Fantastic dining experience, with plenty of options for vegetarians. Great unique North African desserts. Ideal for parties of two rather than larger groups.
Good service and ambience. I would recommend the lamb and cauliflower dishes. Ikra and labneh hatzil appetizers also complimented each other nicely. I found the octopus too soft (little textureand the sauce overly sweet.
The food is fabulous. I loved the whole vibe of the place and everything we ate was delicious. The Jaffa Cauliflower is incredible- who knew cauliflower could ever taste that amazing? My boyfriend said the Pork was the best he’d ever had.We went for my birthday and I’d highly recommend this to everyone. I’m a vegetarian and there were plenty of options.
Lively atmosphere with chatter around the bar, and smoke and flames as you see the food preparation in front of you. I liked that the menu has enough options, but is simple enough to making choosing very easy.Waiting staff were super knowledge, attentive and fast! The food was very good but I think most of the cost is paying for the experience and location. I would recommend for special occasions because of this, but it is essentially a casual place so bear that in mind.Small plates but the mains average about £25. Photo is the chicken shawarma.
Great food and great experience. Staff super nice also. One off my bucket list.
Looooved the food, specially the spinach in creamy joghurt, the aubergines, and the salmon in a pepper sauce. Ordered extra bagels to get every bit of the sauces. Only but is that the music is quite loud and the space quite dense, which makes the experience less relaxing.
From the moment we entered, i just knew it was going to be a great meal. We were greeted by Neil a polite young man. Our waitress was full of positive energy clearly excited about the menu, she was attentive and efficient. The restaurant is set up like a horseshoe bar around the kitchen. Diners watch their food being prepared in front of them. The flavours exotic and fresh, different from anything we have had before. I would recommend everything on the menu. Cant wait to come back. Oh and the music playlist is just great.
Wow. Exceeded all expectations. We wanted a change up from the Spanish and French food weve ate for the past 10 days. This was fresh, fast, flavorful, and had incredibly friendly staff.Reservations definitely are required if you want to get a spot. It is all bar seating, but the exclusivity of it simply adds to the charm of the entire experience. The cauliflower and octopus are must haves while the chicken shawarma exceeded all expectations we had and the arayes were incredibly tender. Honestly, I dont think you could go wrong here!
The food, service and vibe are all perfect. The Barbary may just be my favourite restaurant in London. I’ll definitely be booking in for a dinner service every time I visit the city. Catered to vegetarians. I’m not that into desserts but even I think their pistachio tart is incredible, you must order it if it’s on the menu.
Great evening at the Barbary. Nigel andGabriella were great hosts. The food was delicious, we really enjoyed the naan with muhammara and ikra sauce, the black salmon dukkah and the knafeh. We were not blown away by the hamra octopus and the pata negra neck because the sauces used in both dishes overpowered the flavour of the main ingredients- octopus and pork. Personally, I would have used less sauce for these dishes.
STUNNING! Absolutely loved this place, the dishes were delicious, the vibes were immaculate, the staff had lots of great recommendations.Strongly recommend trying the Grilled Haloumi, Bagel > naan, cauliflower, and ask for recs on the dips we got great suggestions
Probably my favourite meal from 2021. I wanted to try everything on the menu, and thanks to it being small plates, I made a great dent in it! The octopus, Jerusalem Bagel, Cauliflower and Hash cake were impeccable and I think about them *a lot*.
Small restaurant with bar seating and open kitchen. Sharing style. Friendly service though. Its busy so don’t expect to leisurely eat as they serve you very quickly and expect you to order more or leave. Definitely on the higher end price point (e.g., £30 for a pork dish that’s a few bites each). But everything was pretty tasty.
Great food and ambience. Loved the bar sitting and the staff was extremely attentive. Food was good and well cooked. Dont know if I wouls go again mostly cuz the menu selection didnt seem really big, but would recommend trying at least once if you are interested or inthe area
Everything was incredible! The food (shout-out to the Jerusalem Bagel), the service and ambience. Would highly recommend!
Simple ingredients, delish results. Very intimate "counter style" dining, essentially every seat is a "Chefs Table". The staff was incredible as well, I wish I got their names but was in a bit of state at the time (a hangover combined with pure elation from the food). If youre near Neals Yard, I would make sure to try out The Barbary.
Nice experience dining around the counter. Food was unique and flavorful. On the pricey side though.
The Barbary Next DoorStaff 5/5✨Food was delicious! Shared small plates with a friend and we spent £33.50 in total.
Bar seating not the most comfortable, but a good view of everything going on in the kitchen (a lot of ruined naan). Drinks were good, and everything was tasty.
Very unique setting (bar only), excellent service and as usual with Assaf Granit, amazing food. Portions are small but still great for sharing, exactly the perfect amount of dishes on the mene and a great selection of alcohol.
We were looking for something unique and fun, with water mouth dishes. The Barabry was just like it. Great food, made in the central kitchen in front of your eyes, under the hands of the chef which is part of the super small 3 people team. The plates are quite small but the superb. We tried the chicken shawarma and the Moroccan Cigars which were amazing. The chef recommended to try the cauliflower and it was super good. The place has a great vibe too. All in all - very good place to go. Just book in advance as it is super small and packed.
Like the vibe there. The setting is very causal. The menu is kept rather simple. It’s interesting to see they cook in front of you, I really like counter seating with open kitchen. Most dishes that we tried are good, very delicious though I found it more on the salty end. I like the cauliflower Jaffa style the most, very flavourful and tasty. The chicken shawarma was succulent, the Harma Octopus turned out to be average. The services are excellent, staff members are all very friendly and nice. I recommend this place.
We were lucky that someone had cancelled, and were able to get a table. The octopus was excellent, but the star of the dinner was definitely the pata negra, cauliflower, and hashcake. The pata negra has a lovely charcoal flavor and is ridiculously tender. The hashcake has the texture of thick chestnut paste, and a nutty pistachio flavor. The ikra was also very good as well.
The Barbary is a tiny restaurant with only counter seating. Its cosy, and you get to watch the chefs at work a few feet away, but you will be literally bumping elbows with the neighbors. Coming to food, they have a small & succinct selection of North African inspired food. I chose one bar snack (Barbarian Falafeland two larger platters (Hamra Octopus & Chicken Meshwiya), along with wine. The falafel was good, the garnish even better. The octopus was fabulous, undoubtedly the star of the show. Here as well, the garnishes(including what seemed to be beetroot hummuswere sublime & possibly even better than the protein. The chicken was the most unremarkable part; not bad by any means but not noticeably different from any decent chargrilled chicken. The post meal Turkish coffee was not really worth it. The staff were all very friendly, and very helpful when it came to helping choose dishes and suggesting wine pairings.
I was really looking forward to trying this place out but it was so disappointing. I could list other restaurants in London doing a better job at this kind of food for a much cheaper price. And on more comfortable chairs!!The seats are around a U shape bar with the kitchen in the middle. It is mesmerising watching the meat grilling and naked flames. But the stools themselves are high, dont move or spin and are so close the to bar that if you are tall it is too uncomfortable with your knees jammed against the bar. Or if you try and spread yourself out, you bang the people next to you. Definitely not for big or tall people. The kitchen staff were lovely. Really friendly and happy to have a chat. The waiter though... He cleared the plate of my friend and asked her if shed like another drink. Then as he came past me, he (gentlyelbowed me in the back with his hands full of plates to see if I wanted a drink too. Poor. The beetroot tastes just like the Natoora dip from Ocado. The Moroccan cigars are minced salmon. The fattoush a Greek salad without the olives. It was all pretty disappointing. Except the grilled salmon was really good. The three stars for my review come from quality of ingredients and the good vibes and conversation from the kitchen staff.
One of my top spots in London. All bar seating so you can watch the chefs. Staff are wonderful and knowledgeable, music and vibe is fun.The food is so so tasty, the combination of flavours are insane. It’s all designed to share, so pick a few plates from each section and plenty of bread on the side to mop up sauces.Wine list is succinct but on point.Great for a date night / 2 people as it’s all bar seating so you can’t really have a big group.
Going there is a whole experience!Seeing the cooks do their magic in front of us is part of what makes this place amazing. The service is top level, and of course the food - the most important part here - is amazing. You really get what you pay for
Nice place with Delicious Middle East food.Different concept than a regular restaurant, you sit around the bar and not around the table. All the plates are small but SO delicious! (For example, the pictures below are the Cauliflower Jaffa style and it was as a mining course)The staff are nice and friendly. Daniel, the chef is very talented and you can taste his love for the food.
I was looking forward to visiting the barvary since it opened, I finally had a chance. Good food and nice service. Its worth noticing, they have one of the best non alcoholic beers I tried. However the prices where a bit high compared to restaurants of the same range, and the chairs very uncomfortable.Very nice overall!
overall: every single dish was phenomenal, packed full of unique flavours. highly recommend the cauliflower. bar-style seating, so go with no more than 2 other people.moroccan cigar 🚬: crispy spring rolls filled with aromatic white fish. though i couldn’t really taste the dipping sauce, but it’s good without anyways.naan 🫓: literally baked in front of me, couldn’t possible get anymore fresher! thinly stretched chewy dough, that is just perfect when dipped in sauce. since it’s oven baked, the super thin parts have a crispy texture.Jerusalem bagel 🥯: less chewy than the naan but the sesame on top just brings the bread to a new level.mashwiya 🍅: it’s salsa on top of tahini, both are good when eaten separately; but when put together, the tahini overpowers the salsa.hummus 🧆: i’m in LOVE, smooth and creamy. just the right amount of olive oil on top (i’ve tried so many that it feels like i’m drenched in oil)pata negra 🐖: juice just spills out when you bite in. the meat is tender but not fatty nor oily. obsessed with the sweet glaze on top as well. tho i find it pricy for the portion.cauliflower 🥦: MVP of the meal. veg fried perfectly, crispy on the edge & just the right crunch inside. the tahini gives an extra level of umami flavor, balancing with the fresh tomatoes.knafeh 🍬: got too sweet for me in the end but very interesting texture with crispy exterior & slightly chewy interior. love the crunchy pistachio on top & the juicy fig.
We booked a table for 2 on a Sunday evening & so glad we did! It’s a very snug restaurant with bar counter type tables surrounding the central kitchen, a great concept so you get to see all the action. Service was quick & friendly! The chef was very attentive with orchestrating the serving of our dishes, only sending it out once we’re done working on the ones on our table. We had 8 plates which fed us nicely. Just a note for tall people, to request for the corner most seats so you can kind of angle your legs to the side (my partner is 6’4 and thank goodness we were lucky to be seated in the corner as the space between the bar & seat isn’t tall people friendly). The food blew us away more than the wines tho, so maybe skip that & focus on the dishes when you pop in :)
Excellent food and excellent service. Everything we ordered was delicious. The bagel, cauliflower, chicken and octopus. Impressed with the chefs who were really on top of the orders, everything came out fast and perfectly cooked while also interacting with the customers and acting as front of house at the same time. Fun place to eat - you are essentially sat in the kitchen with the chefs and can feel the warmth of the grills and noise of the cooking. Highly recommend.
Tucked in, away from the main drag this jewel of a restaurant deserves a medal. It was our second visit and everything was as superb as the first time. Staff are absolutely delightful, professional, attentive. Food is simply wonderful. It’s a MUST. We will definitely go back again
The Barbary has been on my list for a long while, but I was always a tad put off by the bar seating as I’ve never eaten on a bar in a restaurant, it just hasn’t appealed to me!WELL, I take it all back! Bar seating is quite possibly the best option for 2 friends or even a date. This tiny restaurant is like a shoe horn with the bar and kitchen in the middle. It’s so fun and interesting to watch your food being prepped and cooked. Not best suited for the claustrophobic as it is a tight squeeze, but it had such a buzz, and the service was 10/10. Our waiter in particular was JOKESSS, it made the experience just that extra bit more special. It’s a small menu with lots of dips, breads and some main dishes like this gorgeous salmon pictured My friend was torn between this or the octopus. I of course, said the octopus because it’s not like you can have it at home (as often), right? WRONG! The chef AND waiter heard this and strongly recommended the salmon. And to their credit, it was BANGING! This is the dish of the restaurant.Really recommend this place, but not so much if you’re a veggy or vegan. I’ve heard they don’t change their menu much so I won’t be back in a hurry because I tried most of the menu. It’s really reasonably priced and I was really satisfied when I left here. Words cannot describe the intensity and deliciousness of the food at the Barbary. We enjoyed a range of dips with the Naan, the octopus, Pata Negra, lamb, and hash cakes. The delectable food combined with the personable and fun staff made for an incredible experience! I only wish they were down the street from me so we could become regulars!
The best of the best😋Hummus - Classic dip, 10/10.Naan e Barbari x2 - The naan bread was recommended to us over the pitta and I was honestly shocked at how flavourful a naan bread could be, I knew I was off to a great start.Mashwiya - Diced veggies on tahini, paired well with the naan bread.Cauliflower Jaffa Style - Deep fried cauliflower which was recommended again to us and I can confirm it was incredible, it’s a must try!Monkfish al Makdous - Grilled monkfish on tahini with green beans. The fish was cooked to perfection🤤Black Salmon Dukkah - Grilled Salmon, simply delicious.Baklawa - Sweet layered pastry. This had just the right amount of sweetness after the many dishes we indulged in.⭐️Google rating - 4.6🙋🏻♀️My rating - 4.8Finding a fault with this restaurant was extremely difficult. The staff went above and beyond during our visit, I never wanted it to end. The ambience was exceptional created by limited seating, luxurious flavours and memorable service. The Barbary has truly pulled it out of the bag, we have high hopes for the ‘little sister’ restaurant which opened on the 30/10.Check out my Instagram for more reviews - @overeatingwither
Excellent atmosphere, incredibly friendly staff, great selection of wine, and lovely food. A long time fan of The Barbary - TBND did not disappoint. Its a more cosy, intimate venue with ~12(?seats, with vibes similar to a Spanish tapas bar.
The cigars are amazing. Staff was very friendly. Food was even better. Octopus was my least favorite dish, and it was still amazing. One thing I should mention, if you’re not familiar with the area, The Barbary might be hard to find. It’s tucked away down an alley in a sort of court yard. Fun fun.
Good food but the quantity is small for the pricing. The cauliflower Jaffa style and spicy plate is a must try.The Turkish coffee is totally skippable. The falafel- tasted good but was super dry!Ok service. The taste of the items is good!A turkish- barbarian cuisine. All the items are high on salt so if you are not used to hugh sodium in your food then do let them know in advance.
Full of flavours!! If that’s what you’re after. The seats around the open kitchen makes it great for a catch up meal with a close friend, with staff being close by so they can be very attentive to your needs. The chicken leaned on the saltier side for me, but everything else was perfectly seasoned. What’s not pictured is the Moroccan cigars which was delicious. The cauliflower is a must - highly recommend this place!
My Favourite restaurant so far. I went with my girlfriend to celebrate our birthdays and I was blown away by the food, literally my first mouthful of the first course (baba ganoushcaused a great big smile to erupt on my face, it was wonderful from then on. The food was superb and the service was lovely, the staff were so welcoming and friendly and made us feel right at home. This is an experience I’d recommend to anyone
The dips and the bread were phenomenal. So was the Pata Negra Neck (Hard to go wrong with iberico!but the octopus was pretty bad and tasteless. The desserts also really didnt do it for us. One of them was a cake with cream that was a bit too hard to cut into; had a decent flavour but nothing spectacular. The other one felt like a glorified pastry decoration with a few sauces on top that was hard to eat and very insubstantialThe price was also very high for what it was, the octopus was almost 20 pounds, to put it into contrast, Sabor, a Spanish restaurant that serves a similar octopus dish gives you more quantity, tastes a lot better and costs a few pounds less. The chairs at the bar were also not adjustable and very uncomfortable for a tall person. Overall I have a hard time justifying the high price. The service was great though.
