Agilkia Island,، Qism Aswan, Aswan Governorate, Egypt, Kawm Umbu
With regular sound & light shows & accessed by boat, this temple is dedicated to the goddess Isis.
Historical Greco-Roman temple that has been protected from flooding.
Very nice visit - amazing that it was relocated for the Old Dam - look for the crosses towards the inner areas
Visiting Philae temple is a great experience. There are vendors on the dock selling tourist goods on the way down to your boat, the boat trip is about 5 minutes over to Philae Island where the temple is located. Make sure you have some tip money for the boat drivers and you’ll need 50 Egyptian Pounds if you want to use the restrooms. The temples very pretty, with plenty to see and a lot of interesting history. Keep an eye out for the Graffiti left when Napoleon visited. You’ll also see some beautiful temple cats who are friendly and seem to enjoy the attention. I hope you enjoy your visit.
Its amazing how the government with the help of Unesco relocated this ancient Egyptian temple piece by piece from its original location on an island to another island next to it to prevent it from being forever submerged by the Nile.
Temple on an Island in the middle of the Nile. Dedicated to Isis, Osiris, and Horus.
If you come to Aswan, you cant miss this place. If you dont like history thats fine, but still come to visit for the view, and the architecture is amazing
Absolutely stunning and the fact it was submerged in the lake originally and then rebuilt piece by piece on the island is amazing
The scenery from this temple is picturesque. The cafe located near the temple was great. Make sure you try the mint and lemonade drink. I had the mango drink.
Beautiful place. Very peaceful. The Egyptians have done a good job of improving the area for explorers to see the area. I strongly recommend a trip to see it. Even the boat to get there is wonderful.
It’s in a unique spot. You’ve got to hire a boat to go there. Unfortunately, we’ve got scammed by the boat owner. We agreed on a price and at the end he wanted more money. This happens often in Aswan in general. The temple is nice, just a bit of the same.
Absolutely wonderful place. You have to get here by boat. Very impressive, a must go destination. Lovely pictures at sunset. 1-1.5 hours is enough to see the entire place. Make sure you have a good guide ( most of the guides from Nile cruise/ hotels know nothing about the history and just want top. So pathetic, you get more information watching YouTube.
One of the most amazing temples in Aswan, dont miss, the whole trip is great
Very interesting as this temple was moved up to save from Nile but had been partly submerged. There is carving from when Christians utilised it for worship and also carved dates and lettering from Napolionic French era.Island is tranquil The boat ride to Philae and the whole experience of visiting this amazing temple with fascinating history seems almost unreal. Beautiful surroundings, impressive architecture. The Temple of Isis is located on a peaceful Aglika island and dedicated to the goddess of love. It was transferred block by block from the original place near the first cataract.
An awesome Egyptian temple on an island. The only way to arrive is taking a little motor boat after buying the ticket at the entrance (the trip on the boat is included in the price). Stunning views and a good spot for taking wonderful, and panoramical, photos.
Magnificent ,one of the most beautiful temples in Aswan, the boat ride is nice as its located in the middle of the Nile river
Absolutely amazing! The temple itself is very worth visiting. Very well preserved and nice to see, despite the high temperature. We took the light and sound show in the evening and we do not regret. Much fresher, less people and very nice with the story telling and lights
Beautiful temple located in Aswan. Located on an island so you need to take a boat to get there. Lots of souvenir shops if one is interested on the marinas.
Philae - Temple of Isis;Built during reign of Ptolemy II. Temple of Isis at Philae is dedicated to Isis, Osiris, and Horus. Temple walls contain scenes from Egyptian mythology of Isis bringing Osiris back to life, giving birth to Horus and mummifying Osiris after his death.
One of my favorite (if not my most favorite onetemple I visited in Egypt 🇪🇬 an island just for the temple in the middle of the Nile. You can access the island by one of the many boats that exist and it approximately takes 10 minutes to arrive.Originally the whole site was covered by Nile during the flood season, but it was moved piece by price and thats why its in a good condition and well maintained. This initiative took around 4 years to complete.
Beautiful temple. The inscriptions on the walls are stunning, and some have been “deleted” in ancient times. It’s fascinating to me what the ancients didn’t agree with and try to erase.Seems like there aren’t many visitors normally, so a great photo op.I think I saw other reviewers say entrance fee is 180, but I could’ve sworn the sign said 200. Regardless, we’ll worth it. The 200 LE boat fee wasn’t much worth it, though. Wait for others so you can join a group to share boat fee.Clean, cool restrooms on temple grounds.
How to visit on your own as a solo traveler:1Take a mini-bus to the Aswan Low Dam (2 EGP)2Walk to the Marina Philae Temple3Buy tickets at the counter (EGP 180 / Student 90)IMPORTANT: DO NOT ENTER THE BOAT DOCK BEFORE FINDING A GROUP!4 The boats have a fixed price of EGP 180 return for up to 8 people, including 1 hour at the temple. Extra persons are EGP 25. The problem is that the ferrymen will not let you join a group, trying to force you to pay for a while boat on your own.So WAIT BY THE TICKET COUNTER and ask people if you can split a boat with them. If you go inside, the local guides will under no circumstances let you join their group, as they have an agreement with the ferrymen.5Personally I found 1 hour at the temple was too short, so I ended up paying 50 EGP to a group to go to the temple, and then found another group to which I paid EGP 50 to return with a couple of hours later. I recommend this approach as 1 hour is rushed. As for the temple, it is a really cool place to visit. You can easily imagine the ancient Egyptians chilling by the water. So well preserved, and incredible that they moved it from a nearby island. There is some information, but make sure to bring a nice guidebook. Personally I think 1 hour is too short for a visit. You will be rushing to read the information and take pictures and just enjoy. There is a shop/restaurant on the island, but the drinks are a little expensive (50 EGP).
I liked this place and enjoy my time, also there is a cafetiere you can spent some time on the river. My point of view, this that place need to urban development to attract tourists.
Helps to have a guide for this stunning island and temple. The sound and light show is highly recommended...far better than the one at Giza pyramids which is very dated now.A real highlight of our trip.
I reviewed the Temple when I reviewed Angilkia Island. In a few words, its well worth a visit. For selfie and photo op enthusiasts it pays off.A good place to add to your itinerary.
Beautiful temple. A shame so much of the detail was destroyed by the early Coptic Christians. Got there early in the morning. Good timing, as it was closed by the authorities due to a sand storm that arose while I was there.
Most picturous temple and surroundings weve visited so far. Were lucky to visit in late afternoon hence great lighting for the cameras. Enjoy the boat ride and the hillocks. However the story of the submerged Nubiyan villages reminded me- everything comes with a cost. Great example of restoration. Find the spot in the water pointing out the original location of the temple.
Amazing!! Unique place!Philae is an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam, downstream of the Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser, Egypt. Philae was originally located near the expansive First Cataract of the Nile in Upper Egypt and was the site of an Egyptian temple complex
An ideal time to visit would be around sunset for some great photographs. We paid 50 EGP per person for the ferry ride and 180 EGP for the temple entry. Its highly recommended to either have a guide or read up on this temple before visiting because the history is what makes it so fascinating - the site was submerged in the river and then later rescued and reassembled piece by piece. In addition to being quite large and interesting, there are some parts of the site that are quite well preserved.
Awesome, inscriptions telling unique ancient stories, many chapels from different eras are there
To go here from Aswan you take a taxi for 150-170 EGP come and back, he will be waiting for you. Buy a ticket. Take a boat. It’s may be tricky, because you have to share the ride or pay for the private one 200 EGP. We met other travelers and shared. Oficial price is 175, but for some reasons they want tips, so will be around 200. They will ask how much time do you need. It’s 1.5 hours perfectly enough with all pictures taken. We been here at 11 am, not the best time, it’s busy and the sun is too bright for pictures. I would go to the opening, to make everything easier without crowds.Don’t forget the bottle of water from the town or be ready to pay 4 times more. Toilet is always 5 EGP.Enjoy!
What a beautiful and magical temple! Right on an island is simply mesmerising! I would definitely give it a visit if I was in Aswan!
It is a fabulous place ….. have its own magic surrounding with nile and have very lovely story
This rating has nothing to do with the temple itself. The Philae Temple is magnificent and different from other temples in Luxor, as it is Greco-roman style. What I felt super annoying was the motorboat to get to that island. Individual visitors (solo/partner/familyhave to pay 175 EGP to hire a boat. Those boatmen prohibited you from sharing a boat with others, even though it could hold twenty persons. The amount was not a big deal for us, but we just felt so uncomfortable because of their attitude and they tried to fool us.One captain scolded me in a loud voice, telling us their rules were unarguable. We had to be obedient to their wishes- to be ripped off.Who do you think you are, SIR???? Such a spoiler. They will be much more kind to Egyptian visitors. We tried to share a boat with some Egyptians but failed. Our friends also tried. They succeeded. So, youll never know.We did not want to waste our time arguing with them anymore since we needed to head to the temple.ANYWAY, it felt sorry for the temple.
Beautiful temple to the Goddess Isis. Large temple area to walk around. The temple sits at the edge of the water. The Philae Temple. Philae in Greek or Pilak in ancient Egyptian, meaning the end, defined the southern most limit of Egypt. It was begun by Ptolemy II and completed by the Roman Emperors. The Temple was dedicated to the goddess Isis, the wife of Osiris and mother of Horus.Philae is an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam, downstream of the Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser.
A really amazing temple very well preserved and in the middle of a lake giving a wonderful point of view. Its really recommended to arrive early in the morning.
Highly recommend either having a guide or reading up on this temple before visiting as the history is part of what makes it so fascinating - the whole site was submerged in the river and later rescued and put back together piece-by-piece. The site itself is quite large and fun to explore, with some very well preserved parts. Visiting at sunset will allow for some great photo opps too.
Tourist disclaimer ⚠️*Dont pay more than 15-20 USD for the ferry boat ride(for the whole group NOT PER PERSONper the local authorities and this includes one full hour waiting on the island for your tour and if you get mistreated, take it to the tourist Police unit upfront.*You dont have to tip anyone anywhere*The foreign entry ticket is overpriced but IT IS WHAT IT IS 🤦I truely love it here, tranquilizing and soul soothing for some reason. Scenery is great in every direction.
Amazing, this temple is one of the best places ever you can visit if you interested in Egypt history
Amazing experience, not personally for me, i needed more info about the place, its so rich with history and information but if you have a tour guide, i still got to enjoy the scenary and the amazing temble and the basic info about it on Wikipedia. you can get there through the haysa port or phiala port.
I came here today and it’s amazing site to behold. A place worth to visit, even with a pandemic, I came all the way from the gulf. I did not regret that I came here. This place is magical and would bring you the ancient time.
Lying on a small island north of aswan this beautiful temple can be reached by boat. Initially the structure was submerged and abandoned than the government decided to move the entire temple and raise it above water level in a very ambitious project. The temple is richly decorated. The best time to visit would be around sunset for some great photography.
You’ll be amazed to see how the temple was moved piece by piece onto this island due to the construction of the Aswan high dam. You’ll also love the temple if you are a cat person 😸. A few cat families live on the island and might show up to greet tourists if they are in good mood 😼
we arrived late afternoon via a small boat. the low afternoon sun made everything more beautiful, in particular the light and the shadows around the forecourt and the double colonnade. pity that I ran out of time and missed the Temple of Horus, Temple of Isis, and Temple of Hathor at the back.
Beautiful, well kept temple dedicated to the goddess Isis during the Greco-Roman period. They had to relocate the temple due to a flood. It is amazing that they were able to move it and keep it so well preserved, you could not tell at all. The only way to access it is with a boat which tour guides can easily help you with.
Beautiful temple dedicated to Goddess Isis, the Goddess of life and love. The temple was moved from it’s original location after it was flooded by the construction of the Aswan dam. Today it is accessible by boat. Lots of local cat residents. The local guards knows all the photo places for instagram if you are stuck on creativity. Tips are always appreciated
Philae Temple is located on Lake Naseer in the Aswan reservoir. Our guide Pedro informed us that the temple was relocated to its current location during the construction stage of the Aswan dam resulting in multiple floods in 1975 The temple is located in the middle of a lake on Agilkia Island. The short boat ride was quite enjoyable and the blue water cheered us up.Temple of Philae is a UNESCO World Heritage site that was founded in the 7th Century BC and abandoned in the 6th century AD. Do visit the Temple of Isis the Goddess of Old Egypt. But apart from the outstanding temple complex, the beautiful sunset over the Lake is a memory that has remained etched in my memory to date.
This was the last temple I visited in Egypt and it was most definitely the best one to save for last. The history of how it was saved is just incredible. However, for myself personally I just felt at home here. It was a magical feeling. Unfortunately no easy way to get here. Have to hire a boat which makes for a great trip overall. Highly recommend! A+
Had a great time here but its a little complicated to get there... We went on our own and had to negotiate a boat after we bought our tickets. Then we were joined on our boat by two pushy salesmen the whole ride. The temples were awesome though.
One of the best temples in Egypt, the view of the water and the rocks around the temple look so amazing. Would recommend it to everyone
After a complete disregard for Egypts antiquities in the building of the Aswan High Dam and flooding of the valley to create Lake Nasser, great amounts of international aid went into resurrecting and reconstructing this ancient temple on a new island. Still powerful. Not in its original place.
