Tavern On the Square - Bar in Grand Rapids, United States
Floor was dirty and shoes were sticking to the floor all around the bar. Should have walked out at the point. Menu was short on options and I would not recommend the fried chicken sandwich.
They are really short staffed but the bartender was a dynamo! He served up drinks and food! Lots of props to him. Vibe was great with the fire roaring on a cool Michigan night. Great place to stop I. With friend for a drink or two.
Waiter was great, place was loud and drinks meh
Great sports bar, good drinks!
Our friend fainted while waiting in line to get into the bar and the bouncer refused to help us— we begged the bouncer to get us some water for our friend who had fainted right in front of him and he said “it’s not my problem.” As we called the ambulance, they acted as if it was an issue our friend needed help. Not only did this incident occur, but the very same bouncer also refused to let our friend into the bar who had a valid government issued ID because she’s Mexican. The bouncer said our friend needs a passport to prove the ID is valid— we were trying to explain that the ID is basically a passport. Her ID had everything that’s required to get into the bar and he shut the door on us and refused to let us in. 0/10. DON’T GO HERE.
If I could give this bar negative stars I would. RACIST AND INCONSIDERATE! My friend passed out right infront of the door due to medical conditions and they did nothing. We asked for water and the bouncer said “not our problem” then on a different occasion our friend tried to enter the bar with her Mexican visa and they denied her bc it wasn’t a “state issued ID” so basically if youre out of town you can’t enter. Worst service and the rudest bouncers I’ve ever encountered. The drinks are OVER PRICED and the music is basically EDM.
Cool vibes, food is just ok
Typical Irish bar. No complaints. Reasonable drink prices
I ended up walking out. I was planning to have dinner with a friend, and I saw the sign says please seat yourself. So I sat down at a table right in front of the bar. My friend arrives and after 20 minutes of waiting, not one of the staff even bothered to approached us. I am now assuming that they must have been only serving the bar area at this point in time as they had patrons at the bar they were happily helping. However, considering youre in the business of hospitality, it just seemed very rude that no one bothered to tell us the dinning tables would not be served.
How can you be an Irish Pub but not have any Irish whiskey other than Jameson?
Good drinks and food at good prices. Staff was friendly.
The food was absolutely awful. Maybe if you came here just to drink, it would be decent. But if you are looking for good food, skip this one.
Great atmosphere, windows open for fresh air. Friendly, easygoing place with great service, drinks, and food. We have a wonderful time every time we visit.
Average. This place has changed names yet again, nothing exciting about the limited menu so far. Service was fine and our waiter stated that they have exciting changes coming so we will see
Paid a $5 cover to get a weak $10 dollar drink with poor service at a dirty bar, avoid this place.
First time visiting this restaurant. Such an amazing experience! Our bartender, Ella, catered to our every need. After having a long day, it was refreshing having someone to chat with. I have heard mixed reviews about this bar, but after experiencing it for myself, I will certainly be back with more of my friends and family! Outstanding service and work ethic of those behind the bar!!
Waitress was super slow getting our order. Food took forever. Pretty sure the burger was previously frozen. Never even got the second drink I ordered.Bathrooms were disgusting- one toilet was clogged, one had fecal splatter all over it, and the third was missing the tank lid
I love it here!!! I come here all the time and the staff is so amazing and I always at home here. Highly recommend to anyone! ❤️
This place is slow as hell. I sat at the bar, while making eye contact multiple times with the bar tenders, for TWENTY minutes. Absolutely phenomenal. She went back to the same customer, ignoring me, 3 times. Please learn how to treat your customers more fairly. Disappointed because it has a great vibe inside.UPDATE - I was the only POC in the entire bar. Thanks for treating me like I didn’t exist. Also, I asked the girl if I “could put an order in when she had a chance” very politely. And then she said “one moment” - + 10 minutes wait.
Ive been in GR for 6 yrs, been to tons of bars and tonight I found my Bar Home! Dublin Hall is such a cute club/bar with dope music, the best bartenders, clean bathrooms too!
If I could give negative stars I would. I was staying at the canopy hotel across the street.. Had a long day, and I just wanted to get some food and a drink close by and head back to get to bed because I had an early morning. I have an arthritis in my right ankle that is extremely painful and I walk with a bad limp. I had been on my feet all day at the GrrCon cyber security conference in town, so my ankle was in a lot of pain by the time I arrived. I sat down and the bartender refused to serve me because she said I was "stumbling" when I limped in the door and she "didnt feel comfortable serving me". Many better places in Grand Rapids to take your business. I ended up having a very pleasant experience and a great pizza at the place next door, Peppinos Downtown. Great service and food.
If you want the music volume of a nightclub, but the atmosphere of a TGI Fridays and the service quality of a Steak and Shake this is your place. Hot garbage.
My sister, cousins and I went here last night (5/14/2021)..... we had HORRIBLE serve. My sister asked if there were any specials, and the waiter said theres no specials except for me, Im pretty special *eye roll*....We sat on the patio and he kept peering around the corner at us, creepily.... It was my first and last time going there.
Went there with friends on st patricks day. Door guys said if we dont give them our light up goggles they are doubling our entry fee to $20 each. Half our group was already at our table so we had to pay extra. There are classier places to get drinks people. These guys are the last place you should visit while in GR. Half our group also never received these "lip stamps" on wrist, so their $20 was not good for re-entry.
Alesha is such an amazing bartender! She catered to us in such a professional and fun way. Very interactive and always arriving on time. Has an amazing bubbly personality that fit the vibe of the bar. She was wonderful and my group will be returning because of her amazing service. She is a breath of fresh air during this covid experience. Thank you for hiring such a well rounded person. 🙏
Great atmosphere and a cool inside place. The service was good and the food was alright. We were forgotten about though, and we had to wait a very long time for small items we asked for (sauces, etc.). Our check was wrong and then had to wait even longer for that to get sorted out. Other than that, nothing big to complain about!
came on a busy Sat night so didnt get to try the food nor get assigned a service but the vibe is nice, drinks are strong , and the bar service was fast so no complaints
Good selection of draught beer. Mac n Cheese wash really good, but burger only so-so. Nice atmosphere and staff
Tavern is an alright bar. They have mediocre food during the day and a decent night scene. The staff there is usually pretty good. If youre looking for a a fun night out or a place to eat and watch the game then this place is worth a visit.
Good happy hour service would definitely go again, staff was nice too
Atmosphere was nice; however, our burgers were really dry, we hardly got any fries with our burgers, we had to ask twice forbthe ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise for our burgers, and when my grandson ordered pickles on his burger they never mentioned they dont have them. I wouldnt eat there again; it wasnt worth the money.
Good for a few drinks, but the food is just okay. Service staff does pretty well keeping up with busy Friday/Saturday nights. Food portions are pretty small and unexciting for the price - but its better than nothing if youre out drinking. One of the appetizers we ordered took over 45 minutes to come out, and our server was nice enough to take it off our bill without us having to ask. Definitely appreciated!
Went there before a Griffins game and the place was only half full, but the service was still slow and not attentive. I ordered the Tavern Burger with waffle fries and the burger was extremely over seasoned, it felt like someone dumped half a salt shaker onto the burger while cooking it. But the thing that really took the cake was when the check arrived it had a little note at the bottom that said "2.8% fee for credit card purchases". There is absolutely no acceptable reason for any business to do this ever. Every other restaurant Ive ever been to has never had anything this needlessly cheap and petty as a policy. Even if the service was attentive and quick and they served perfectly cooked burgers at a reasonable price I would still never come back here because of the 2.8% fee on credit card purchases.
Its a nice atmosphere in here with a moderately sized dance floor. Theres a cover charge to get in, and it seems a little unnecessary for what you get. They dont have a very good beer selection, if you like craft beer. Liquor is your best friend here. It can get really cramped in here on the weekends to the point where youre pushing past other people, but the service is decent. I recommend it if you like a cozy place with a dance floor.
What an awkward experience. We were the only ones in the restaurant on a Friday evening. The staff out numbered us 2:1, but it took forever to put our order in. Although slow, our waitress was friendly. We went for grandwich 2018 where they advertised a jalapeno infused burger with layers of toppings. What we got was a smaller than expected burger smooshed with toppings. Usually I can ignore presentation when the food is good, but this was bland. The Granny Smith apples slaw had good flavor. The white cheddar Mac and cheese was cold and had clearly been sitting for a while.
Came here lastnight with a friend for a few drinks. Great atmosphere and crowd. We were greeted very nicely at the door by a sweet gentleman and we had Lisa (I believe that was her name), (shorter woman with long dark hair:as our waitress and she was awesome! Super friendly and very speedy service! Hope to have her as our waitress again when we come back!! Also look forward to trying the late night menu next time.
If youre coming downtown for a concert this is a great place to get dinner. The wait time was comparable to other restaurants in the area so plan on getting here early when theres events going on. Our server was great and the food was great. The prices are what I would expect for a quality restaurant.
My family and I happened to stop here after going to a Monster truck show at Van Andel. We were pleasantly surprised to walk into a beautiful restaurant. The service was great and fast. The food was awesome and fairly priced for everything. So happy we stopped. Would like to eat there again!!!
How is this place still open after being exposed for blatant racism within Grand Rapids? That just shows how far as a country we have to go in equality. Even when this place was still The Black Rose it was awful. Service is terrible, way overpriced for drinks and food and the bouncers are incredibly rude and unprofessional. But the fact this establishment still gets patrons as I write this review after it was shown all over the local news an African American citizen was blatantly harassed and assaulted due to his skin color makes me wants to puke. Send the right message and dont give this place your hard-earned money.
Come here if you love overpriced drinks, a stale atmosphere, and RUDE bartenders! From the start of our encounter, one female bartender had an unprovoked attitude. We were not being obnoxious or impatient, yet she promptly put on a show that screamed, "I HATE MY LIFE AND THIS PLACE." My friends and I were all trying to have fun on our buddys birthday, meanwhile the bartender proceeded to be aggressive and rude; no one wants to buy drinks or even be around a negative and disrespectful person like that. To top it off, she even laughed at my $2 tip for pouring us 3 shots at the fine tune of $28. <------Management and the owner(sshould reconsider the potential of this business!
Went to dinner here with my friends during a work weekday and it was a nice atmosphere. We liked that we could hear each other talking, enjoyed our drinks (we only had beer really - one person had the martinis and said she thoroughly enjoyed it -- I also had a Jack and Coke and that was stronger than what I usually get else where so I appreciated that)The food however was not my favorite. The Guac was good, but the pretzel bites, burger, club, mac & cheese, and french dip were a bit disappointing. We all agreed things were over seasoned and too salty. Our waitress was VERY nice, although forgot a few things throughout the night -- for example my soup (no biggie though)My friends and I really wanted to like this place, it just didnt make par.
Came here for dinner and had an amazing meal and a well made drink. Our server was extremely pleasant. We came back later to dance and just had a great time! Upbeat atmosphere
This place doesnt even deserve 1 star. First time here last night and Ive never felt more disrespected in my life. I am far from rasist... and last night I finally experienced personally what its like to be patronized by another race. A black guy tried dancing with me.. as I was dancing with a guy friend. Long story short he gets mad and because he was friends with another black gentlemen bouncer. Me and my 3 friends get kicked out. I have never been so furious. This place is awful. They have had many complaints in the past regarding race. I would NEVER recommend coming here.
Were hanging out on the patio on a Saturday night. Our server is super attentive, especially for a busy night. Kudos to her! Drinks are a tad weak, but gotta make that money! Good overall. Young and vibrant atmosphere, great place to hang out for a night out!
I was pleasantly surprised by the spring roll appetizer. Despite the promise of spicy sauce to accompany it, however, I found the sauce to be sweet rather than hot. They do have a decent beer selection. The menu is not too extensive. It was extremely busy when we got there, but we didnt have a long wait for a table for three.
Salads can be dicey depending on where you go. Ive never had any issues with theirs and their seasonal spinach and artichoke dip is hands down my favorite. Some outdoor seating in warmer months makes for a nice chill spot as well. Service has always been friendly and efficent.
We had a large group unexpectedly. They did rather well, but gave a group of 23 one 1 waitress. You could tell she was really overwhelmed. The food was OK. It was definitely better than typical bar fare, but it was really pricey for what we got. It bothered me that the floor was so sticky, my shoes were sticking to the floor, making it hard to walk anywhere. For dinner time on a Thursday night, it was quiet and slow.
We were going to stop at another famous place in GR for dinner but saw this Gem siting on the corner just down the street while looking for parking. We decided to change our plan a little and stop in. It was a great choice. The service was fantastic, it wasnt really busy, We ordered burgers, they were fantastic! Cooked to order, Juicy Burgers just like we were looking for! My only slight disappointment was a limited beer selection but there was at least one for everyones taste and the prices were great!
I havent been here for quite some time because to be frank, there is absolutely nothing special about the establishment to warrant giving them my business. The drink selection is only mediocre on a street packed with great bars, the food isnt very good, and the service is below average. However, I feel compelled to give a review now because of the blatant racism towards a friend of mine that occurred last night, 7/29/16. I would recommend taking your business elsewhere.
We went to this restaurant on a saturday night so I understand if a place is busy…but we waited OVER AN HOUR for ONE hamburger (with JUST cheese), fries, and ONE appetizer. The burger was dry and didnt have much flavor to it…and the $2.95 up charge for the fries was a rip off because the amount of fries we got for that was equivalent to a childs size fry at McDonalds. my husband had 2 drinks and our bill with tip was $50. Huge waste of time and money. I was not impressed and will not be returning. I did however like the appetizer, that was the only positive thing about our experience. And our waitress was nice, but other than that, I will continue to walk right past this restaurant and find another place to eat.
