Upscale-casual restaurant serving charcuterie, cheese plates & tapas alongside wine & cocktails.
Finally went to check this place out. The food was absolutely delicious and service was quick and friendly. I really liked the atmosphere and the decor. Definitely will be back to try more dishes!
What a delicious find. I was traveling with my daughter and her family through South Bend. They had dined in your restaurant on a prior trip and insisted I try it. Oh, how glad I am that I took their advice. What a scrumptious menu of southern-inspired dishes! Everything was perfection: From the grilled carrots, to the hot chicken, to the biscuits, to the Mac and cheese. Gourmet comfort all the way. The restaurant is beautifully appointed as well.. Keep up the great work!
Dined here last one Saturday and can’t wait to come back! My Cuban sandwich was incredible, the staff was so friendly and the vibe was on point.
Very good chicken. Their fried wings with Carolina gold sauce is one of the best dishes I’ve ever tasted.
Food was hugely expensive and chicken was dry the chicken and waffles was slathered in this disgusting sauce that was alcholic even though a MINOR ordered it. Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone…no wonder they specialize in drinks.
Great fried chicken with a extensive variety of unique cocktail.Sorry to report but on my second visit here the cocktails were still great but the chicken was very dry. I will give it one more chance.Once again on my third visit Im sorry to report that the chicken was still very dry. Cocktails were still great. But I crossed them off my list of restaurants to visit. No more Fatbird. So I changed rating to one star.
The fried chicken and red beans and rice was awesome. They put a sauce w/ the waffles that didnt go with watermelon at all. But the service was great atmosphere was awesome
Food was fantastic, I had the OG chicken sandwich. The bartender was very friendly and quick to take my order. Would definitely go here again, it was pretty empty on Monday evening.
Favorite downtown South Bend restaurant! Jambalaya? Fried Chicken? BURGER?! Get em all. Highly recommend the maque choux being mixed in with the jambalaya and a biscuit.
For a while now, I’ve heard about how good this place was. Finally, I had the opportunity to try it and it did not disappoint. Everything is super delicious and bursting with flavor. It might not be the healthiest meal of your week but it will definitely be one of the best. I was particularly surprised at how much I enjoyed the addition of salami to the Cuban sandwich. It adds a little kick that really works. I will definitely be back in the future.
Easily the best Nashville hot chicken sandwich in South Bend! I also had their biscuit as a side and it was unique and delicious with the honey butter that came with it! Ambiance was great too! Great date spot, especially if you sit outside!
I recently walked in to have lunch with my bosses, can I just say; that from the moment you walk into the moment you walk out, you will feel at home. This place was not only delicious but I was so amazed that the woman taking our order didnt even need to write it down, and when the food came out, everything was as we ordered. I applaud The Fat Bird, you have definitely caught my eye and I will be coming back for more!P.s the little yellow bird in your frames was so cute, and different, you can tell you care about the details.
Love this place! Great vibe and great jambalaya.
Never a bad experience! That Nashville Hot is 🔥. Great atmosphere and fantastic service.
First timers and we loved it! My kids loved the cheeseburgers and I loved the jambalaya 👍🏾😁
We stopped here on a food and drink tour of DTSB on a Saturday night. The drinks we ordered were ok. We did not stay long enough to order food. The bartender was knowledgeable and attentive. The person I belive was the manager was very friendly and engaging.
Summary: Eclectic place that made some... choices. But it all comes together for a good experience, friendly service, unique atmosphere, and housemade food.Came here looking for something local. Came in just for food, not drinks. Husband and I got the onion dip and both ordered chicken sandwiches. He had the OG and I had the Nashville. You can tell everything is house made and served on dishware that looks like it was donated by 8 different grandmas who never met. Nevertheless, the dip was tasty and the sandwiches were really good. They didnt shy away from spice on the Nashville hot. Leaves a good tingle, so have water ready! The mac and cheese was a bit odd. Husband is adamant it was more "cheese pasta with a Cheetoh crumble." Tasted fine though. Potato salad didnt have as much mustard in the base if that matters to you.All this with a steady background of 1990s hip-hop.
Wow!! I was not expecting to find this gem in South Bend, IN!! Jambalaya, macaroni and cheese, green beans and sweet tea- a winning combination of flavor and hospitality!
Cool spot. In the heart of downtown, nice staff and we enjoyed the food. It puts a twist on chicken because its sort of a mixologist bar meets Southern chicken joint. Good spot for lunch, might pick a different spot for a sit down dinner
The food was really good. I had the Nashville, a chicken sandwich covered in cayenne and brown sugar and topped with cole slaw. Spicy but delicious. I really only have 2 small complaints about this place. The water didnt taste very good but I imagine its probably just city water. The other thing was the iced tea and lemonade were both weak or watered down. Its right on a major corner downtown so easy to get to.
The chicken sandwiches are terrific! The chicken was tender and most. My wife had the Murica with potato salad. She loved the potato salad! My son and daughter had the kids hamburger and they said it was one of the best they have had. I got the Nashville chicken sandwich, it was so good. It has some heat, but not too much. We got two biscuits and they did not last long. They were delicious!
We are from out of town, made a reservation before the event we are going to, and what a treat it was! The atmosphere was amazing and they were incredibly quick! Our food was out within minutes! Lindsay C was our server and she was absolutely amazing 🥰 Highly recommend this restaurant if you are ever in the South Bend area!
Southern favorites with a hip flare! The gravy on the mashed potatoes is not for me, but the chicken earned back any lost points and then some. Great find!
It was busy for an early week day dinner. Server was great! Son loved his burger. I enjoyed the potato salad & Nashville chix sandwich. It definitely was spicy! Adding more coleslaw would have helped. I didnt prefer onions in the mac & cheese. Cayenne seasoning was strong. The cheetos were a nice textural & flavor element. Its an adult version for sure. Prices were comparable to other similar upscale pubs.
Fantastic service, tasty food (sizable portions!and very accommodating for our service animal. My only regret is that we wont be in town longer to try more on the menu.
Fatbird has so much potential. It is a unique spot serving southern food. We love almost everything that we ordered. We may have come during peak hours. The wait was rather long. Some of the waitresses looked tired. We got the 1/2 fried chicken and jambalaya. Both dishes lacked spices one would have expected in southern dishes. A bit of salt and pepper enhanced the experience. The sides, mashed potato, maque choux, bisquit and mac n cheese, were delicious. Too bad, they ran out of pan-fried cornbread as we arrived.Nothing much to write this time around; we will be back soon to try out other items and hopefully at a better time.Give them a try!
Ordered a 1/2 chicken plate for take out. The chicken was super juicy, tender, and flavorful, highly recommended. I asked for the Nashville Hot sauce on the side and it is really good; sweet, spicy, salty, and butter goodness. The homemade coleslaw was also very good but don’t get it if you dislike raw onions.
I found Fatbird a nice St. Paddys evening alternative to a rowdy Irish joint while walking around reading local restaurants menus.Im a fan of fried edamame in small doses so the app was a bit much for one, and had I known how good the green beans were, I would have ordered *that* as an app in addition to the accompanying sandwich side! The OG was incredible; dill lettuce provided subtle complexity to the tender and perfectly-breaded chicken. The ratios in the sandwich were perfect. But the green beans. Oh man. Mildly spicy with smoky bacon and chopped onions and cooked to be nice and tender. Those are worth a trip back alone!
This is the place to go for chicken. Southern with a Creole/Cajun kinda twist. Never had a bad meal at Fatbird. Nashville chicken-Delicious. Red beans and rice-Delicious. Red snapper sandwich-delicious. Tyler in the bar provides great service and menu insight. Try the grilled carrots for an appetizer.
Finally got to try this place with my wife and a couple of her coworkers. Glad to see a familiar face in Tyler the bearded bartender. I went with the appetizer wings sauced in Carolina Gold (my absolute favoriteand they didnt disappoint. No bar beverage for me this time since we were on a tight budget but we definitely want to come back again! Strongly recommend!
Worst restaurant experience of my life in a dozen countries.. excited about a new Cajun place in town but got yelled at because we didnt hear the host the first time. It was so loud everyone looked up from their tables. Was coming here for a celebration so that was ruined. It didnt help that the crawfish boil was not worth ordering. Everyone who makes a good boil on their own probably already knows it. To be fair the sandwich my friend had was much better. But not planning on coming back.Waitress is a tough line of work in this environment. I hope they get paid better and have safer working conditions. But still didnt appreciate being yelled at first thing on a Saturday afternoon heading into a celebration.
Went last night prior to the great Simon and Garfunkel show at the Morris, and were treated to a wonderful food and beverage experience. Jambalaya was great, my daughter loved the chicken with waffles. Son in law had fried chicken wings, wife ordered a couple appetizers that were tasty. All in all we all were impressed with everything and recommended Fatbird to one and all!
Fun place. The drinks were just right with a good mix of new stuff and old favorites. The food was awesome. The chicken was fresh and flavorful. Right downtown in South Bend next to all "the stuff". Parking gets tight, but there is a ramp across the street .
We had a wonderful lunch at Fatbird! I had the chicken and waffles, long cooked green beans, coleslaw and infused watermelon chunks! My wife had the fried snapper sandwich with potato salad. Everything was full of flavor! Highly recommend!Returned a month later to try the shrimp po’ boy! Delicious! Check it out!
🍗🐓🐔very tasty chicken. The fried chicken in the Nashville sandwhich and the chicken and waffles is quality: the coating is crispy, salty, and tasty and the meat inside is very well cooked and juicy. The chicken was the highlight of the dishes. The watermelon was a refreshing addition to the chicken and waffles. The restaurant was busy and there was a wait for food but this was a Sunday after a game day so this was expectedThe reason I’m giving Fatbird a 4 instead of 5 stars is because I think the supporting foods with the chicken can be better. The skillet cornbread came out barely warm and cooled quickly so it was dry when I eat it. The waffles were also dry and I feel that more maple sauce is needed for both the waffles and chicken
In town just for the weekend and decided to try this place out. With our party of 7 we were immediately seated and approached for our order. The wise server talked us into ordering two plates of wings instead of just one and Im glad she did. The grilled and the fried were brought out with multiple dhipping sauces. When the main courses were received there were no complaints. I enjoyed the Cuban Sandwich and Long Cooked Green Beans.
Ok so, customer service at noonday was good. Bartender was not friendly at all even though we sat in the bar area and she was not our server. The snapper sandwich was surprisingly good. The green beans were great, btw they have pork in them. I didnt know that and I dont eat pork. I paid for that later. However the highlight of my visit was the Margarit. It was awesome, thanks to the focused, unfriendly bartender 😉
What an awesome place to eat! I started smelling good things on the opposite corner as we walked up. Friendly greeting and prompt service. Menu items were explained and we ordered. The Nashville hot chicken was so so good, spicy, tender and juicy! I should have ordered the laminated biscuit but went with the cornbread. After I looked over at my colleagues plate, I immediately ordered a biscuit. It was scrumptious! This place had a simple menu but banging with flavor! Cant wait to go back and explore other menu items.
Got a pickup order of the nashville chicken. Quite spicy but so delicious.Update: went and dined in and still delicious spicy chicken. Service was great. They also had a wide variety and tasty cocktails!
We arrived around noon on Monday & it wasnt too busy considering it was July 4th holiday. Nice atmosphere. I had the chicken salad sandwich with a side of Maque Choux & unsweetened tea. Drinks were a little slow coming out. The tea tasted like it had lemon in it (not my fav). The chicken salad is made with Dukes mayo (my fav). It has a good ratio of chicken to sauce. It has dill pollen in it. Cant say I know what that tastes like, so.....any way, its on a huge, fluffy croissant & layered with Zapps potato chips & a tomato slice. When I was a kid, I liked putting potato chips on my sandwiches to make it crunchy. This brought back memories! Its topped with a pickle. It was tasty & quite filling. The Maque Choux is a really good corn dish...I could have eaten it as a corn chowder! Its a little spicy with a full bodied flavor. Hubs had the Nashville. He said it was really good, but spicier than he expected & he enjoyed the potato salad. They had a lot of good New Orleans dishes to choose from, so well have to come back someday for dinner!
Took my mom here for Mothersday, was quite excellent. Took a few different plates to try: The Chicken Waffles Watermelon was my favorite, my mom preferred the red beans and rice and my dad liked the leftovers of the OG Chicken sandwich. The sides were really varied too, we had one of each: laminated biscuit was rich and buttery, the green beans were flavorful, beans were savory, not my moms favorite but a good pairing with the biscuit. The maque choux was great and pairs fantastically well with the potatoes, which had a sourcream-esque topping way better than any Ive had. The Coleslaw wasnt bad at all either, had some flavor and bite, not just smothered in cream. The campanelle was a mac and cheese, which I thought was okay, but Im not a mac and cheese guy for the most part so your mileage may vary. We started out with a special vidalia onion dip which was really well matched with southern styled chips too. We would have liked dessert too but they were out due to the bakery they contract their recipe out to, although I would have loved some beignets. Overall, this was a great trip out and less any drinks we left with about a $60 bill with leftovers. Definitely go and try it.
Service? Great!Cocktail? Great!Chicken n waffles n watermelon? Great!Mac n cheese? Great!Biscuits? Great!I see why this place is #1 on Yelp. Tasty and creative food and drink options and a cool atmosphere. Next time I’m in South Bend, I’ll be back!
Perfect location, wonderful atmosphere and incredible cocktails! We have fallen into the habit of coming here just for cocktails and sides/appetizers not because the mains are bad, but because those are so extraordinary!I could drink the Montazuma all day (though that would be a bad idea!and as someone born and raised in the South I am here to tell you that the biscuits are legit! The staff is also incredibly friendly, and the restaurant makes an effort to support other local businesses and artisans! For a fun time, try to find the yellow “fatbird” in all the paintings hung on the walls!I did take off one star because they do not really have vegetarian options. They do have amazing fried okra, so I know they can do veggies right! Work on getting just a few of those kinds of items on the menu, and this will be my favorite stop in South Bend!
Fantastic menu with great prices! The decor is super cute and the staff are all really friendly. I highly recommend the hot nashville sandwich. Definitely not for the faint of heart but for those who can handle the heat youll fall in love! Another great addition to downtown South Bend.
I would love to give our total experience a five star rating but only part of it deserved five stars. Part of it was close but not just quite there. Ill explain. First and foremost our bartender and server (whos name we found out is Asadis probably the most refreshing, enthusiastic, informative and pleasant person in the food service world! I wish every bar and restaurant in South Bend, hell any city actually had an Asad working there. My wife and I enjoyed our interactions with him a lot. He gets our first FIVE stars. Second would be our meal. My wife had the "OG" chicken sandwich. I had the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. Both sandwiches came with a very nice sized piece of chicken breast, perfectly cooked. The Nashville hot sauce was a little darker than Matty Bs original but I get it. Theyre doing it their way. Also, coleslaw doesnt comes on it, but again, theyre doing it their way but they gladly brought me pickles to put on it. I also had their version of Mac and Cheese, while my wife had green beans. Both was very good as well. Our second FIVE stars. The decor tho was simple yet uniquely original. We liked it very much. Four stars. There was a few lady servers we saw kinda just moping around the place, no smiles, no real personality coming from any of them. One had her cell phone charging in a place everyone could see the cord hanging. To me theyre back rooms for that or behind the bar.Had they all had half the energy and outgoingness as Asad my opinion would be much higher. Three stars.Overall tho, we loved it. We love the menu and the meal choices we had so far. We will be back as we have already planned on bringing some friends with us next time.
Great service, friendly staff, easy ordering. The online menu is great & very descriptive. My husband went inside & ordered carry out.>Bacon Cheeseburger with Mashed Potatoes>Jambalaya with Skillet Cornbread and Perfect Potato Salad
Wow! As a business traveler, I usually only see restaurants with such unique menu diversity and quality in much busier cities. The pimento cheese appetizer is the best Ive ever had. Lots of pimentos and a delicious smokey flavor. The grilled wings were exceptional with a perfect bit of char in the grill marks. The pressed Cuban sandwich is Tampa style and as good as any I have in Tampa. The Fried chicken was hot and juicy with a perfect crunchy batter. Our sides were the Campanelle & Cheese, Maque Choux and Baked Beans. We would probably order the same items next time as everything was so good. Service was quick and friendly. Prices are reasonable. Well be back!!!
The adventure seeking wife found this place and suggested we tried it. I looked past the confusing and broken website and figured why not. Wow. Wow X4 actually. The interior is finely renovated with what appears to be an original wood floor, exposed rustic brick pillars, and updated crisp drywall lines. We were met with a cheerful "sit where youd like" greeting and were promptly gifted some waters and an inquiry on drinks. He was knowledgeable about the cocktails and I selected an old fashioned. We then ordered an app of the Vidalia onion and buttermilk dip from our waitress, Lindsay. Dip was small, simple, and delish. Going to order again. Then. The golden wife and I ordered entrées: She had the Murica! And I had the Nashville Hot Chicken. For sides we both got the Campanelle (Mac and cheeseand I also had the biscuit. Wow. The light, airy, sticky crisp of the chicken was astounding. It had a heat that built and the flavors penetrated beyond the skin, deep into the meat. The Mac was cheesey and delicious and rivals all I have had. The biscuit. Oh, the biscuit. Golden wife got to it before me so we ended up getting another. Then 3 more for tomorrow. Ya. That good. They were a beautiful stack of layered flakiness with a butter mixture that complimented it better than Jay z and Beyoncé. Breakfast will be amazing. 10/10...thanks for the great service and food/bev... cant wait to return!
The food here was amazing! I got the Red beans and rice, my wife got the Nashville chicken, and our kids shared the fried wings. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted great. Our kids cleaned the fried wings to the bone (literally). If you are looking for great food stop at this local restaurant and support a local business.
Ive had their food twice in the short time theyve been open and everything has been fantastic. Already one of the best restaurants in the area. I dined in for lunch and theyre taking all the precautions necessary to make you feel safe and comfortable (there was a pandemic if youre reading this 20 years from now). Not to mention the space is awesome. Get here and get here often!
