Big zoo featuring a vast range of animals in traditional & modern enclosures, plus a ropes course.
In winter time, there are not so many animals outside to see.And almost no trash bin
I visit the zoo today, in september 2022 and the zoo has a lot of pros and cons. (list below)First of all the entrance price was €8 for adults and €5 for students. It seemed very quiet when I visited, as if the touristic season had already ended (an impression Ive been having a lot in the Baltics since september). As such there were close to no possibilities to get a coffee or sit down somewhere inside for a quick bite or lunch. The zoo has a lot of empty cages which do not give it a good impression. Occasionaly theres a sign signalling future renovations, though I couldnt help but get the feeling these plans have been existing for a long time without much execution... Some huge cages were just empty.I really liked the fact that the zoo is mostly in an actual forest, which gives it a natural atmosphere at the sides. I even saw some wild squirrels enjoying their zoo time! The exception here are the milus deer next to a busy car road near the zoos northern entrance. Another plus is the childrens farm where you can caress goats and also stand next to ducks and chickens. The zoo also helps injured wild animals restore to full health, which was the case with the rooks we saw here. This is what a zoo should be all about: conservation! Some animals I had never seen before and were very cool like the many different species of pheasants, a leucistic crow, a beautiful chameleon, Indian porcupine, raccoon, muli deer, red wolf, huge grashoppers, corsac fox and a sloth. There were also many information signs, which were nice.My biggest issue with the Tallinn Zoo is its extremely small and rudimentary cages for a lot of animals. The polar bear, the grey seal, the jaguars, the black rhinoceros , the pygmy hippopotamus and the chimpansees. Even the bull elephant seemed bored and unhappy. Whats the point of having a four meter salt water crocodile in a five by five meter cage? If the zoo wants to exhibit an animal it should take its wellbeing and comfort seriously, or refuse to exhibit it all together. Seeing the miserable polar bear and jaguar in their tiny cage made me feel ashamed of being human. Four takins sitting on a concrete parking lot that is supposed to pass for a cage, what is that about?I think the potential of the Tallinn Zoo is enormous. Just get rid of the some of the large animals youre incapable of holding and get more smaller, less demanding animals like birds, amfibians, reptiles, fish and rodents. Make conservation and education your priority, rather than profits and sensationalism. And the zoo is already quite green with a lot of parthenocissus plants; put more of these plants and plant even more trees.I would recommend the zoo, once they do something about the small and archaic enclosures.
The best zoo I have ever been to. Unusual animal species, lots of greenery. Highly recommended :)
Way too many animals are still kept on small, soviet-era concrete enclosures and way too many animals are left with not enough space. The zoo acknowledges this and has signs promising they will improve these conditions, hopefully sooner than later. The zoo itself is well kept and tidy and easy to access by buses from the city centre.
One of the best zoo I have ever been, you can spend there whole day
Almost no animal in the park?! Lion’s, polarbear and the majority of other animal cages we passed was empty (signs saying that there was no animal on display). Why was this not made clear by the entrance?! Super disappointed… Also, nothing else to entertain, all cafes were closed :( We we’re here today, a sunny Friday afternoon in the beginning of September. 15-16 degrees and no reason to keep everything closed and still charge a full entrance fee? I would not recommend this zoo to anyone.
Impressive zoo for so small country. The size of its territory gives it a lot of potential for future development. I wish they had better selection of birds.
The zoo park has a lot of animals but the enclosure for most of the animals is too small and unacceptable !!!
Very nice zoo that is still modernizing the habitats of the animals, you can see they clearly care about the wellbeing. Very spacious, lots of animals and extremely friendly prices (20 euro for family of 4)
Very much to see, especially for the entrence fee. It seems like some of tha animals are to far from their own habitat, which would be best for them but it also seems like the zoo are about to change that. I really hope so because thes places are needed but can not be part of a circus or be there for humans. It has to be for their own species sake. Some signs are a little bit unclear, but it might have to do with the rebuilding.
Loved this place. A lot to see here.
One of the biggest zoo I have been to so far, its child friendly and wheelchair accessible. The price is ok, we bought tickets at the gate and there wasnt much que. Staffs are helpful, i didnt know how to speak Estonian and my Finnish isnt so good either, so they do speak English. The children zoo was good the kids loved it. But it should have more house animals that can be touched by the kids may be even some chickens.
A Zoo thats well worth a visit..10mins bt taxi from Old Town costs 10 euro.Huge variety of animals, the Zoo is slowly upgrading many of its enclosures and modernising facilities.Great news if you have children, theres no shop so you will save a small fortune..
Amazing place, a lot of fun specially for the kids. Its work from 9:00 am to 20:00
Its so nice zoo I saw almost all of the animals, some of them maybe were sleeping like the Lion. The ticket was really cheep 8€. And it was clean zoo.
On monday you cant see snakes, spiders, insects etc. Because they are closed.Very rude lady on enter. She didnt gave me student ticket even I showed her my student card. She dont know english.
Huge area with numerous different species to watch. Most interesting ones were some red faced monkeys and polar bear. Elephant and rhino and some of the other animals were taking a nap. Lots of snacks available around the area but maybe more sturdy meal places would be appreciated. Ticket was a bargain, only 20€ per family. Good number of toilets.
I visited there 2015.. Was so saddened by the condition most animals were held in.. Especially the (polarbears and rhinos had already lost their sanity long time ago.. :( Such a macabre torture house for those poor animals. I wish they have already past on being free of their torturers of Tallinn authorities.
I was very upset when I saw some of the conditions the animals lived in. The seals pool was green with algae and the depth was shallow enough for one to stand on its tail and have its head out of the water. The alpacas enclosure had no room for them to have a run around. Felt so bad for them.
It is a nice park but not so great as a zoo. Really lang distance to walk but not that much to see. So many cages were closed and blocked for visitors. The biggest problem was the lady on the cash desk that sells tickets - really rude and bad behaviour. And she doesnt even speak English. Really bad experience just on the front door :(
The nice territory. Clean. But nothing special in comparison with other zoo in Europe.
It’s cheap to go in but the whole area would need some serious maintenance… otherwise ok and you can spend a fun day there with a family.
Very interesting and the best place for spending with family. But have to be a good weather for sure!
The zoo is average size with a typical collection. Their highlight is the polar bear family which seems to be very happy in their cage. The cage is well designed so we can observe the animal’s activities very up close and also from underwater. The rest of the zoo is pretty tired around the corner but animals seem to be well taken care of. There are also forest which is very beautiful in spring, zip line adventure, recreational park, picnic area, kids center, cafeteria.
It was a good visit. The zoo is relatively small compared to other countries. The zoo was clean. The zoo map didnt match some of the actual areas, and there werent good food and snack options.
Wonderful experienceThe number of animals was too little but the zoo is hugeThe design of the floor was innovativeFirst time for me to see a polar bearAnd I when turned my back to a jungle cat it jumped on the glass
I love this place to go with the whole family. We were able to eat a delicious snack at the end of our tour and we were able to buy a nice souvenir when leaving. What surprised us was to see several empty cages without animals
All indoor attractions were closed but its understandable. Great experience and walk in the snowy zoo. Will be back.
Decent zoo set in a country park or forest... there were lots of trees anyway. Some of the enclosures leave a bit to be desired but there are ongoing improvements and they seem committed to the welfare of the animals. As with any zoo a lot of the animals were in hiding (although my suspicion is that they advertise animals they dont actually have #FakeZoos). I caught the jungle cat unaware and saw it licking itself but it soon made a retreat of shame.Enjoyed the time there, access was easy with the Tallinn card. If your Google Maps are anything like mine do not believe them. Get off at the Zoo bus stop (clue is in the nameand the entrance is right beside you. Maps seemed to want me to use the entrance at the opposite side of the Zoo.
I went here in November, there were less animals than I expected. Of course, I understood the rest animals were protected because it was cold. So I recommend you to go to this zoo in Spring or Summer. Id like to go here again to see more animals. But dont worry, you can see animals in Winter. I feel weird when I saw the scene that the animals warmed with heating and it was cute.
Big zoo with different species. Spent 3/4 hours checking everything. A lot of nature, lovely walk. Directions a little bit confusing.
I loved it because there are animals but two things are that I didnt like is that the tiger is not there right now and one bull was in very little cage but the bull its self was very big so there was little space for him/her
Very good value for money, some exhibits were a bit run down, Eagles, Vultures etc but you can see the zoo is working hard to make things better. Its only €5 to get in, its cheap for food and drink, the Polar Bear and Elephant exhibits are really good, staff are very nice.I really enjoyed my visit.
The conditions are getting better for the animals, just do not visit eagles corner as this is still the sadest place. You can expect a lot of fun with or without kids. The food and snacks inside have gotten rather expensive inside but you can bring your own.
Amazing zoo. Lots of land, a good variety of animals including elephants and pollar bears. There is a petting zoo for children with goats and rabbits. A small railway and a few cafes with a good selection of snacks. Recommend!
Pretty great place for such a cheap price, ticket for adult was 9 euros. We were there for 5 hours. Our favorite parts were polar bears, elephants, lions, snakes, and then the duckpond where you could feed the ducks/swans/other birds by yourself.1 star I took away cuz the map for the area sucked so badly, and many of the animals were somewhere (maybe sleepingout of sight., (which I at the same time understand cuz the weather was very hot, but it was also sad cuz we didnt get to see them at all+ birdcages were mostly dirty.
Cheap price and big zoo. People with children should bring their own pushchair because they get tired of walking and the strollers for toddlers are hard to get because of the high demand. The new polarium is beatiful and you can see polar bears swimming below the water level. For the people with cars I reccomend the gate near Ehitajate tee, because there is bigger parking lot.
Very well kept zoo. Fun place to visit with kids. Area is not too big and you can walk through it in few hours. Monkeys, elephants, big cats, sea lions, goats, lizards, birds, rhinos and many more.
Great place for kids. Lots of greenery and lovely collection of animals and birds. The signs are very helpful for navigation as it is huge and one can get lost there. There are small ice cream shops every few meters, which is great in summers.Public transport connectivity is also pretty good and good amount of parking space outside the zoo.
A nice Zoo with a lot of animals. Unfortunately the polar bear was put to sleep/ died, due to an infection ,so the big new home was empty. Other big animals was Lion, elephant, hippo etc. We walked for 2 hours befor closing and was not able to see all animals.
A big zoo with lots and lots of different animals and all seems to have nice homes and enough space to be comfortable. One polar bear seemed a little bit off though but who am I to say, just a feeling I got. The place is huge and there will be a lot of leg work if you decide to go here.
The best zoo you can find in Estonia. It has an amazing collection of birds, deer and felines. The animals look like they are enjoying themselves and it does not give off the look that they are in some sort of prison. The zoo is always getting new updates and more animals, for example the polar bear area now has everything that a polar bear would want. All in all an amazing zoo, would recommend!
For a little place, its got a lot of character. The polar bears have a brand new beautiful enclosure and they are working on doing the same for the tigers. The ticket is cheap and it was nice to contribute some. They seem to be trying to improve all the time.
Very nice place for a walk even if you are not interested in animals. Nice to have a chance to feed birds. Few picnic place are also available.
Love our Tallinn zoo! Really a great place to do a family visit. Kids can observe animals, there are also a lot of activities.
Really nice zoo. Although there are not many species and animals like in other central zoos, but its worth going there. The navigation is very practical - you wont get lost and do circles around one zone. Liked there newely opened Polarium, although few more animals would be nice. But when visiting it, be prepared for walking.
Great value for money! Lots of exotic animals. Also really nice to see they was in good condition and the has mostly enough space. Beats Helsinki Zoo 6-0.
One of the best options for a family trip in Tallinn. The zoo is huge, be prepared to spend more than 3 hours if you wish to see everything. They offer small carts so you can transport you children but on crowded days you may not found one available. Dont forget the map once you get there
Probably the most awful zoo in the world, but also its one of the cheapest (2€ tikets almost whole yearand one of the only ones I could interact with the animals truly. Bad Zoo, Amazing Experience
Quit big and has lots of animals. Some cages are still left from very long time ago, so they dont look nice, but most parts of the zoo look really nice. You can buy birds food and feed water birds. They also have children zoo, with tiny goats and rabbits. Very cute.
