Takara - Japanese restaurant in Montreal, Canada
Too bad it’s closed. If someone knows where the chef is going next, I would love to know.
The food was just ok, but the service was horrible. My wife and I went in with our child and there was one person serving tables, and one person eating, so basically it was dead. We asked if there was soup we could order and we got eye rolls, no information, and looks of contempt. Every question we had and even our presence was an inconvenience. Then at the end, she made my wife tip 15% for garbage service a mediocre sushi. Don’t waste your time!!!
Wanted to try a different Japanese restaurant from our usual place. Was surprised at how quite it was for a Friday dinner; there was only 1 other person besides us throughout our time there. Service was alright; cleanliness of their dishes is patchy, but they will replace it if they bring you dirty ones.We didn’t feel that that they food was tasty. It could be fresh, but it was lacking in flavour for the sashimi (and sushi). Tempura was well fried, bad did not have much flavour.
Honestly one of the best sushi restaurants in the east coast. Very delicious, definitely a go to spot.
Unfortunately I had a bad experience with this place. I came here at 5:30pm on Monday for my partners birthday. We found Takara to have good reviews and my partner wanted good sushi for his birthday. When we arrived the place was dark and the door was locked. Nobody was inside. The hours online state that they should have been open from 5pm-8:30pm on Monday. On the door their hours are listed as 5:30pm-11pm (different from Google their hours on Google!). Still - we were within the window. I gave them a couple phone calls and no answer. We were so disappointed and are still left confused as nowhere was it posted that they were closed. You would think if they had to close unexpectedly they would leave a sign on their door, but there was nothing. This really ruined our plans for the evening. I hope this doesnt happen to the next person.
Excellent Japanese food, personalized service great ambience at reasonable price. Were there for a birthday. Highly recommended.
The restaurant tour near work continues. Its tucked in the corner on the top floor of the swanky Cours Mont Royal mall. I was attracted to this place because I thought they served ramen, but it wasnt the case, at least not for lunch. The lunch menu is bento boxes of different styles, mine had a bit of everything, sashimi, sushi, tempura and teriyaki chicken. The miso soup was good, the salad, meh. Shredded lettuce.I was kinda surprised at how loose the sushi rolls were, but the taste was fine. The sashimi wasnt too good, unfortunately. Weirdly cut - my salmon piece was huge, I could barely fit it my big mouth - not top quality and had that "fresh from the freezer" feel. The tamago was tasty, but again, weirdly cut, I felt like they served me scraps. The tempura also felt a bit off, as if they havent changed the oil in the fryer for quite awhile. The chicken was good. The genmai tea was probably the best thing about the whole meal. For a lunch that cost me over 35$ with tax and tip for what amounted to food court level sushi, I was disappointed.Service was excellent however. In an area with an abundance of top shelf sushi (Sho Dan and Ryu are practically across the street), chances are Ill never return.
The ambiance is excellent - very peaceful and calm, with traditional Japanese aesthetics. The sushi was delicious and varied. The staff was very courteous and kind.
Very nice presentation, good taste and friendly staff. One of the better places Ive been in Quebec and Im from BC where we have some of the best I canada.
Takara is magical!Found it by accident this evening and truly happy I did.The food is absolutely delicious, the interior decor is beautiful, and the service was stellar.I cannot wait to eat Takara food once again!I highly recommend this restaurant.
The sushi was very good and came out quickly! The service was really great.
Great service! Our server provided wonderful recommendations and we have a lovely last meal in Montreal!
Really nice sushi and sashimi platter, fish is pretty good. Nice ambiance and service!
Such a great atmosphere! Sushi was outstanding and vegan / vegetarian friendly! Would recommend this place to anyone.
Great service from Ken!
Very good place! The maki sushi and spring rolls were amazing.
Amazing food!! Such quality comes with a price as expected. Sushi is extremely fresh and delicious. Their chef works here for over 20years and retains always high quality. Service was fast and the food was incredible.
If you go there must order my favourite sushi roll Cool Mont Royal and Unagi Maki at all time.I just love them so much.fall in love instantly with the first bite. I also love the sashimi there. So fresh with reasonable prices. They opened over 20years and I had Perfect dining experiences every time I go there.
Loved this place; started with dobin mushi soup, delicious. Had the rainbow, sushi canape and butterfly sushi. Ended with green tea cheese cake. All delicious. Great service!
Great service and very welcoming staff. We were happy with our waiter’s recommendation of the fried calamari marinated in soy and ginger. It was delicious and super fresh. We had the hot pot and the portions are very large. The soup was well seasoned. Overall a nice experience and would definitely come back.
Went on Sept. 19thThe restaurant was empty when we went🍣 Service : Excellent, friendly waiter, attentive and helpful regarding the menu🍣 Food : 10/10 no comment, it was excellent, just the way I like my sushi. The rice was perfect. Super creative too on the house specials🍣 Atmosphere : decent. Very calm. No rush while eating. I just love the relaxed ambiance... they play soft music, and we could hear each other talking🍣 Price : not an “All you can eat” style like other sushi restaurant BUT it’s way worth the price. Ingredients quality is noticeable and the flavour of the rice alsoOverall : absolutely perfect sushi restaurant. I will definitely come back and bring more peeps here. I need to try the other things on the dish menu
Its pricier but reflects the quality of food - probably some of the best in Montreal, fish is fresh and dishes have lovely presentation. Its close to transit, service is good, and most importantly its hygienic and somewhere Id trust eating during covid.
Shinji san’s sushis are great, he’s a real sushi-chef! We come here mostly for his sushis but everything else in the menu is delicious too.
Great food and pretty nice place! Definitely come back!
Delicate presentation, nice price, fresh sushi, rich flavor, and very pleasant place to enjoy a meal at night.
My favourite restaurant! Price is good, staff is friendly! And the sushi is amazing!
Takara is high under-rated on google and on yelp. It is on the 4th floor (2nd floor above the groundin a shopping mall. Quiet environment that you can relax and enjoy your sushi. Sushi matches the music very well.
Im not sure why there are so many 5 star reviews. I went for lunch service. Very poorly rolled sushi. Was edible but nothing Im going to remember. Expensive considering the quality. I wont be going back.
Very good quality. Cozy and great service!
Favourite Japanese restaurant when we visit Montreal! Japanese chef and waitress are super nice. Food is great! We always enjoy the experience! Some arigato!
Like a hidden gem in the bustling core of downtown. A little pricey but I feel it is justified given the quality of the sushi and their brilliant service.
Nice japanese restaurant with flavorful and more traditional dishes for a reasonable price. Its on the fourth floor, so hard to find if you dont know it.
good place, lunch menu is either limited... or, to be fair, Ive never asked if i could have the full menu i found online, with more interesting stuff
Very little fish. The rice is almost toasted! I was expecting more for a $20 lunch nenu
The sushi is ok. Ive had some nigiri pieces with white fish and the fish had a earth taste. Unfortunately its difficult to have a conversation with the waitress because she doesnt understand or speak English. Place is convenient for location but besides that there are many other sushi places around that are excellent.
Very delicious. A little difficult to find the restaurant but it’s worthy. My friends and I come to have dinner nearly once a month and we all love it. A really good restaurant to have a traditional Japanese experience.
But a very big place but good and service was excellent. Sashimi and Maki was very good.
Very pleasant service. The four meat brochette was actually amazing. The green tea cheesecake is one of the best desserts Ive ever had. Fried ice cream was very good too. Difficult to find location but worth it. The black sesame ice cream was the only disappointment.
Was very disappointed. I went there a couple of months ago and the chirashi was excellent. However I came back a few days ago and the sushi was poorly rolled, sashimi poorly cut, questionable ingredient choices, etc.I dont know if management has changed since when I had my good experience but I would not return.
This is my go to place for last minute sushi. Great service, great traditional Japanese food and love the fact that it’s kind of hard to find at first.
Top two sushi restaurants in Montreal, alongside Saint Sushi in our list. The owner is Chinese but the chef is Japanese, their special rolls are all amazing but a little heavy on the sauce, its a tad expensive though but you get what you pay for, super delicious sushi that is.
Delicious, fresh and beautiful! Theres no much more you can expect for good sashimi, right? Hands down for fish quality and freshness at this place, along with an amiable service.
Good amount for what you pay for. Split an appetizer and sushi combo entree and that was more than enough. Great service and staff. Location is a little weird. Ambience is surprisingly romantic and nice. Plus they have kotatsus.
My first and best sushi experience ever. I always let chef Senji amazes always amaze us with great food. Amazing staff and amazing chef.I have never seen the menu as I trust the chef with his choice..but 2 things I always get on my plates are tsunami roll and oysters.
This is the place to go if you want good quality, traditional-style sushi, with an affordable price tag. Most of the time I come here, its great (Im a big fan of chirashi, and can recommend it here). However, the one time I came here during lunch, I was disappointed with somewhat dry rice and lower quality cuts. So aim for dinnertime if you want the best experience.
Korokke Balls are soo good ! Not impressed with the Salmon Tartare but the udon soup was really good 😊 Love the atmosphere !
Excellent sushi! The staff and chef are so friendly! I go there everytime I get a chance!
I have been frequenting Takara for many years now, and I always enjoyed my time there so nostalgia could bias this review. Although very kind and polite the service can be lacking at times and I recommend having them leave a pitcher of water at your table if you plan on drinking more than one glass. The decor, also slightly lacking, could be described as quaint. What keeps me coming back to this quaint little restaurant is the expertly prepared maki and sashimi (Im salivating just thinking about it). My favourite maki is the "Soleil" which I would describe as indescribable. Also ask to be seated in the Tatami room.
Since I went to Japan, I was refusing to try Japanese food in Montreal because I was scared to be disappointed. But Takara is the closest taste from Japan you can find in Montreal. And the staff are real Nihon-jin. I definitely recommend!
While Takara’s décor won’t wow you (looks kinda tacky 80s styleand they don’t have the most creative sushi rolls, you can count on them to serve solid favorites every time. Lunch time is buzzing and you will get a great deal from their bento boxes, which include both sushi rolls and other cooked foods. The butterfly roll and the spicy tuna are our favorites.
