3 Fernlea Rd, Balham, London SW12 9RT, Charef
Moroccan-themed space with hanging lamps, terrace and basement lounge, serving fresh mint tea.
I really enjoyed the experience here! The food was amazing, staff were very friendly and the decor and atmosphere made it feel like you were in Morocco. Food was excellent, i had the lamb shank which was very flavourful and the meat would fall off the bone with ease. The bread was very crispy and soft which complimented the meat and tomato sauce. Highly recommend trying this place out
Brilliant place loved it food was fantastic staff are great and helpful
Tagine was amazing. The food tasted so authentic. Full of flavours. It was an amazing vibe, with the music and the decoration. Definitely like being in Morocco. The service was amazing stuff was super nice and made sure we had everything we needed.
Below average food , Below average service….Food was cold , tea was tasteless…. Bread was not Moroccan….The whole atmosphere was very Meh …. The cook working while wearing his huge headphones…. Which was not that professional.Rumor has it that The wine opener is still on the table till now ….. cause god forbids we gonna touch a wine bottle.💁♂️It’s a shame I spent that much money on Uber to visit this place ….Another disappointment…..
Really nice food and atmosphere reasonably priced
Food quality is fantastic, Id highly recommend lamb shank tagine .Bit pricey and the only downfall is their customer service as when we ordered another thing by the end of our main course, we had to wait nearly 35 minutes to get it .Apart from it , all good 👍
Food was delicious, the decor and set up in the restaurant takes you to Marrakesh. The staff is very friendly and lovely. Would definitely recommend this place.
Really tasty food, great service, good price! Will definitely be coming back!!
Rude, defensive staff. Overcharged us and their excuse was ‘how are we supposed to tell every customer that the menu price has changed?’. Had to chase desserts too as they handed us the bill after mains, when we were charged for desserts.
Food was very basic , dry tajine . No ice . Expensive chicken tajine came without any bread. Very plain , Marissa was salty.
Nice little joint with outdoor seating in summer. The tagines were quite nice and have plenty of options to choose from. The mezes could have been better, but the tagines definitely made up for it!
Such a lovely restaurant. Food is amazing, staff is really nice too.Would recommend. Also you can bring your own alcohol and don’t get charged for it.Been few times, and never disappoints
Having driven past this place a number of times, and with a limited amount of Moroccan cuisine places in the area, I decided Id take a visit for my birthday treat and was absolutely delighted with the food, service and ambience.Upon entry I was greeted by a warm welcome by a young man and given how hungry I was, I quickly decided on:Starters: Merguez (spicy sausage), Homous (good old classic)They both came out quite promptly and were delicious. For the mains, we went for:Lamb Tagine for two which consisted of 2 x Lamb shanks, with cous cous delivered in a clay pot.It took around 20 mins to arrive, but was worth the wait.Well cooked, with the lamb tender and well seasoned with a meaty sauce and saffron hint to it. Ive got a big appetite and finished probs 3/4 of it with my other half the other 1/4. May want to order seperate dishes if you appetite isnt that big however. The whole place had a family feel and everyone serving us was smiling and genuinely interested in our experience. Will definitely go again and for lovers of North African cuisine in the area, would definitely recommend.
Great food as before when I visited 4 years ago! Still have the BYOB policy which is an added bonus. Gem in the heart of Balham. Highly recommend
Lovely restaurant with friendly staff and great food! The restaurant is nicely decorated, clean and cosy with great vibes and music. The staff is extremely friendly and you can see the chefs cooking behind. We had the mechouia which was simply done -as it should- an delicious. Fresh and tasty, packed with good olive oil.The vegetable tajine was full of flavour and actually cooked in the tajine -which is always a great sign! It was warm, flavourful and fresh. Couscous was perfectly cooked too.100% recommend!
Over priced restaurant. Mixed meze is £17 which included 5 microscopic dishes. Sizes were so small I could not believe.Unfortunately, grilled meat was quite hard, too.
Great place, beautiful ambiance and most importantly the food, my oh my I will never forget the flavour of everything served to me. 100 percent reccomend
This place is incredible. I have been here ~10 times, and ordered different dishes every time. The food and vibe are amazing, and the staff are very warm and friendly. I really recommend all the tagines (the lamb ones are amazingand the Couscous Zizou.
What a lovely night at this place. Super friendly staff and some exotic food we thoroughly enjoyed. We massively over-ordered but the food was absolutely delicious, especially their pot cooked lamb shanks. Excellent tea as well, highly recommended. The ambiente was really fitting and made this an exotic dinner. Please note that they do not sell alcoholic beverages at all but are happy for you to bring your own and enjoy in-house with your meal. There is a Sainsburys just 2 minutes up the road where we picked up some wine.5 stars and if I get the chance, Ill be back. Thanks guys.
Very tasty food. The decor was really nice and staff very welcoming! Really nice mint tea, too!
Came her for a birthday. The staff are genuinely lovely. A family friendly restaurant.Food is amazing!!!
Lovely place, very delicious food and so nice staff
Magnificent place excellent vegetarian and vegan food on the menu. Family run with exceptional service from all the waiting staff. Great job Tagine!
Didn’t enjoy this place at all: food was mediocre, staff were rude and badly organised. We constantly had to ask several times for water, bread, etc. The staff were bringing mains before clearing starters. We went for their set menu for 35£ which in all honesty is not worth it. Chicken tagine was bony. Restaurant atmosphere was nice though and authentic.Don’t recommend and won’t return!
We walked in and ordered kefta, hummous, moroccoan bread, briourats assortment (filo pastriesand Tagine Djaj . It was going great! And then we requested the hot sauces... The red one was good but the really really hot green chutney was so good, it just elevated the whole tagine to just another level. If uou are there, ask for the sauces !
Unbelievable food. Vibe is incredible. Special (musicaltreat if its your birthday! Lovely staff. 10/10 would recommend to absolutely everyone. BYOB
Brilliant Moroccan restaurant in Balham, great choice and everything we ordered, including the taglines, was great. Service is also excellent. This is a BYO place that does not serve alcohol.
Great service. Im currently in crutches and the waiter opened the door and even pulled out my chair to allow me to sit. Also, byob, we didnt drink but great place to save £20 on a bottle of wine
Went here for Valentines Day, didnt realise they had a special set menu with either a meat, fish or veggie main but we were delighted with the food!!A 4 course menu with sharing in mind, we struggled to finish the deserts.Service was a little rushed but we didnt mind as had other plans for the evening.Overall, Ill be returning to try their standard menu another day :)
Lovely authentic restaurant, with a BYO alcohol policy. Food is cooked well and presented well, with great taste. Music at a lovely level so you can hear each other. Only criticism is that the restaurant got a little smokey at times whilst they were cooking certain dishes. Good service and staff explained dishes for us. Would recommend.
I’ve been to this place twice in the last 3 weeks despite living in Balham all my life. The quality of food is amazing but the service is even better. Thank you for being consistent it’s very rear these days. The vibe, music and staff are fantastic. Keep up the good work and I’ll see you soon for another lamb shank!
They have everything on point in this restaurant… the decor, the ambiance (lighting, music ect), the food. Everything was perfect. So happy we found this restaurant, loved it all. Bring your own bottle if you want booze which is great as you can save a ton. Went with two others they too loved the place and food. Honestly can’t fault it in anyway. Looking forward in going back! Thanks guys ☺️✨
Went here last night, the food is genuinely just sensational. It can take a while to get your food but it’s because they are always busy. It can also be quite loud, so if this isn’t your thing try and get seated upstairs because they seat a large table downstairs and it can be intense because of the low ceilings. Lovely people with a good sense of humour who work there - you’ll be dreaming of this place when you next fancy Moroccan food!
Very good food. The mixed grill was great! BYOB
Brilliant atmosphere, excellent attentive staff, fabulous food. BYO wine. Tagines are lovely, the lamb was so tender and well spiced. Had a couple of starters and a couple of desserts between 3 of us which was perfect. Theres s Sainsburys and a very good wine shop just up the road to get your drinks from. Book a table if going there peak times.
Im not someone to normally write reviews. Was recommended this place by one of my close morrocan friends, the only reason i was abit skeptical was cos of some of the negative google reviews i’d read.Still went ahead and took my mother here for dinner on her birthday, lets just say impressed is an understatement. From the interior design/decor, to the music and general warm atmosphere, it was a very enjoyable experience. Perfect spot to take family for a meal or to take a lady out on a date, they allow you to bring your own wine free of charge and they also have shisha available. The food was incredible, and i was very pleased with the service, the algerian manager was very friendly and made us feel at home. My mother really enjoyed the night out as did i. Please... to anybody reading this who is thinking of going to Tagine for the first time, i strongly recommend you do not listen to the clowns that left negative reviews, you wont be disappointed. How you could leave this place a one star review baffles me. Big thank you to the Chefs and waiting staff. Would 100% recommend this place to anybody.
Beautiful and unique restaurant! The service is brilliant and really friendly, and food was amazing. We had lamb tagine, chicken pastillas, and the grill meat and everything was really tasty, highly recommended.
What a gem in Balham! The food is great, and very reasonably priced for the quality. The restaurant is cosy with a good atmosphere and classic Moroccan style interior. Friendly service, and with BYOB options it makes a great evening out at reasonable prices. Outdoor seating with good heaters. Can highly recommend!
Went for the 1st time yesterday. OK so booking, would not allow me to book on the website so called by phone took a long time to get an answer. They do not mention on the site that it no alcohol sold. So a quick trip to the supermarket. We booked for 7pm and only two other tables were occupied. By 8 pm it was full, all 4 of us ate from the special set menu, which is £29.99 pp for 4 courses, we all really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere was buzzing. We were there until close 11pm and there is no rushing you to finish, its all very relaxed. Morrocan food is very similar to Lebanese and Turkish. So if like them you like this. Would defo recommend. Only gave 4 stars due to the difficulty booking and lack of info about no alcohol sold.
Been here multiple times and the food is always top notch. The service is excellent too. Love the girls Anissa and Najwa. Whenever you’re feeling cold and gloomy and want some homemade nutritious goodness. Give this place a go. Probably the best restaurant for dinner in Streatham/Balham!
Delicious food! Incredible value! Fantastic service! What a little gem in Balham, it has a gorgeous interior and lovely warm atmosphere. It was my first time visiting with family but after today, it has become one of our favourites and we will be back for sure.
They don’t serve alcohol so we had to go buy some wine from Sainsbury’s nearby. It would have been nice if they’d told us when we booked so we could bring something nice from home. It doesn’t say on the website either. But no corkage fee so that was a plus! The atmosphere is really lively - it was nice but just to note that it’s not a quiet romantic dinner sort of place. Especially because we were sitting outside by the road, i found it a bit difficult to hear my partner(who is quietacross the table. They have heaters for sitting outside which kept me very warm.Pictures are of the lamb shank. Very tender and nice with cous cous. We had roast pepper dip to start and was very full without any sides or dessert.
Delicious! Wonderful service, great food in generous portions, very well managed. Photo is 3 mains and 2 sides.
Best tajine in town! From the starters to the desert from the fantastic vibe Zizou brought to the place to the very friendly staff this place is a must if you want to make sure to enjoy a nice meal with friends or family!
Good food no doubt, but the waiters are on your case and want to upsell all possible add ons. Sadly their aggressive approach did not go too well with me. Menu is quite decent and the tagine walida was well prepared. Parking is not an issue as off street parking are easier to find.
A very authentic Maroccan restaurant where food is delicious and decor is really in style. The owner and waitress were really nice and friendly.
A great place to eat authentic moroccan food. Brilliant service, superb food and market type decor. you can buy the tagines, slippers and baskets that are on display. Highly recommended.
Nice delicious Moroccan dishes in a relaxed atmosphere. Tasty and quality ingredients. Would love to come back again. Its near the station which is very handy.
The three stars was for the atmosphere, decor and customer service. All was great but the food...nah. Not really a fan. Was there for my sisters birthday so there were loads of us and it was fun. Probably would never go back.
Nice atmosphere, good decor with a mixture of western and authentic moroccan styling. The food was good but not as authentic as I hoped but then again, neither are the curries in the Indian restaurants. So, if you are looking for true authentic Morrocan food, visit the villages in Morocco (or Ouzoud Valley), otherwise this is as good as it gets. Nonetheless, will come again.
