Taberna Monroy - Restaurant in Malaga, Spain
A wine bar with huge selection but dont serve coffee.
Unfortunately we experienced none of the hospitality or service listed by other reviewers. The lady who served us was unwelcoming, dismissive and rude to ourselves and to guests at the table beside us.. we all agreed we would not return.
Nice tapas and quick service. Turns out we arrived there 1 hour before closing and they still served us and did not rush us.We ordered almonds, olives, manchego cheese, salmorejo and another thing I dont remember the name of.We liked the cheese, olives, almonds and salmlrejo in that order.
Friendly informal spot for local fare. And charming staff.
Great place for a lunch or dinner. Black paella was very good - not greasy and you can taste great flavour of rice, olive oil and seafood. Goat cheese with mango jam was delicious as well as smoked sardines. Good service to. We really enjoyed our lunch.
If I could give more stars, I would.
I should have known when we were graciously offered a plate of Iberian ham and cheese without having even seen the menu, that we were in trouble here. Of course it was one of the more expensive things on the menu, luckily we said no. We were still charged (per personfor olives and bread that we barely touched (and didnt ask forand that was taken away again very quickly as soon as they realised that we werent going to spend any more money. The food that we did have was very expensive but nice. However the money grabbing attitude from the minute we sat down was not. This kind of place is the reason online reviews exist.Avoid at all costs.
Wonderful resturant and perfect service and good food.
Amazing cozy bistro like. The food is incredible and the service so friendly
Nice, small restaurant with good food (not exceptionaland elevated prices compared to the surrounding
The service was friendly and it has a nice location. Our starter was fine, but the main courses were overpriced for what was provided. The cod portion was small and the meat dish with tomatoes was sprinkled with tiny bits of meat which were chewy and not pleasant. This is not a place that we would return to.
Traditional Spanish dishes with a twist! For tapas they also provide homemade butter and jam, absolutely delicious! Great service as well, very happy that we visited this place!
Super friendly staff and excellent food and terrace. Anything you order is going to be delicious
Had a few tapas here for a late dinner. Service was pleasant & helpful. It is possibly a bit on the expensive side, but we were pleased to see a number of Spanish people dining here.
Not giving 5 starts because:- I take 1 star for the quantity of the portions- another star down for the overpriced portionsThe taberna is nice and cosy, the service is really attentive and gives you a very personalised experience, feeling like you are at home. The decoration is also really cute and contributes to the ambiance. The portions are also really well in plating and bring your appetite. It is obvious that the products are carefully chosen and of high quality. But lets be real - my example is with the Russian salad portion - it costs 10 euros for a "full" portion, probably not more than 180-200 grams which is in my opinion very overpriced. The "reserva manchego cheese" is 9 euros and its only a few pieces. However "locally sourced" these products are, it seems to me a bit unreal that they are so expensive.
Food, olive oil and wine were great. I only give 4 stars though as the waitress was rather a business woman and wanted to sell as much as possible. She gave us a Lumé wine (it said on the bottle), but at the end we had to pay 45 euros for a brut wine. when I asked her why we had to pay for a brut although it clearly said Lumé on the bottle, she simply said “It’s another kind”. we had the feeling she was pulling our leg. So better ask clearly at the beginning which wine you really get. Also, as soon as we wanted the bill, she did not speak to us anymore and did not even say thank you or goodbye.
Wonderful meal with a variety of tapas and a tuna & tomato salad. The wine suggested by the excellent waitress was delicious. Thoroughly recommend.
I’m from Málaga and I really don’t recommend this place. Too expensive, and the quality is poor. We paid 20 euros for filtered water, a small beer and two canned artichokes. You could easily find a lower price for better quality in the center of Málaga. The owner justified this by explaining that this is targeted to tourists. I write this in English so those same tourists understand my point of view as local client. (Máquina)
A small and intimate restaurant in Málaga showcasing local and Andaluz produce. Great wine list and delicious menu. Something a little different witt excellent and welcoming service.
Local Spanish food but a bit more upscale.Excellent salmorejo! De pulpo was also good but not super fresh and a bit too salty for me. Nice decor, friendly service and with attention to COVID hygiene. Overall still very good, despite the price that is a bit higher (they also charge you 1 euro for the bread but the bread is ok)
Every time Im in Málaga, visiting Taberna Monroe is a pleasure. Great food and very friendly service. They combine fusion and traditional dishes on the menu. Selection of wines is also great.
Good service, nice small place. Food okish but very small portions. Overpriced. I ordered paella of meat, which i was warned that it was meant for 2 persons. When i received it, it was more like a one child portion. Definitely not 1 and surely not for 2 adults. Taste was ok, nothing special.
The best restaurant in Malaga weve been to during our 4 days stay! Me and girlfriend enjoyed the well prepared food, Im puzzled how underrated this place is! Definitely give it a try!
Wow - definitely a top 3 for best places to eat in Malaga. If you are with 2 - ASK for their set tapas menu (30€ ppand order a bottle of red wine alongside it. You will not regret it!
I can just say one thing, Wow! Great service, great food, this is a must when you visit malaga!
Wow! Outstanding food and service. I have had a lot of great meals in Spain but this may very well be the best. Attention to detail at every turn, the highest quality ingredients, beautiful intimate atmosphere, great wine selection and a menu that is traditional but anything but typical. An absolute gem.
Best. Food. Ever. Period. Or at least the best Ive had all week. They open late, but a Malagan friend recommended it to me twice - so I figured Id wait a bit. Had I eaten here in my first day, I wouldnt have gone to any other place. It doesnt look like much: the place is small and the food looks simple until youve tasted it. Great food, friendly staff, and a 40 year old Pedro Ximinez to top it off? Perfect dinner!
Incredibly friendly and attentive waiter. Interestingly unusual tapas. Some were very good, others were just fine. Lovely wine list!
I personally think this is the best tapasbar in Malaga. Cozy and great good.
Food and service was so good we came here twice. The staff speak are attentive and friendly and whoever is in the kitchen knows what he/she is doing. Its clear the menu is designed with thought - traditional, regional but also seasonal dishes are on offer. Meat, vegi and vegan options are available. Cheesecake is a particular highlight. If you are in Malaga and enjoy good food look no further!
Perfect culinary experience, nicest surprise in all our Spain trip, excellent service, goodies on the house
Absolutely the best meal we have had in Malaga having been here for a week. The tapas were great and the prices super fair. Do yourself the favor of trying the cheese cake, it is out of this world!
Delicious! Loved it. Very kind service.
The only place in Spain where tapas were not included. And this is only the beginning, as after we ordered our pints they also asked if we preferred cheese or ham. Based on our experience in Spain, we naively thought that that was the food included with our drinks. Of course it was not. €30 for a small portion.
More good looking than good eating. We had dinner 2 months ago for my stepmother s birthday, we were 4 and had 4 starters 4 mains 2 desserts... some I would consider as an offense to good cooking (foie gras with wasabi!!! Killing the taste of foie), one was tasty like the Recuerdos of Ronda, but unfortunatly dry rice and overcooked meat... service was good but passing by us all the time. 2 glasses of wine 2 softs, final bill more than 160... definitly not worth it. Tripadvisor should not rank them where they are.
I had an incident at this restaurant where there was a piece of plastic on my plate and I ate part of it. The plastic originated from the packaging of the squid that I ordered. How the cook allowed the plastic to reach my plate is beyond me. Anyway, the worst part was how the Moroccan waiter handled the situation: first, I told him that there is a piece of plastic on my plate and he just said I am so sorry, took the plastic away and continued his work and did nothing. At a top restaurant, when something like that happens, you fully replace the whole plate and you provide a personal apology. Feeling that the Moroccan waiter would not do anything further, I reported the issue to the Spanish waiter who happened to be also the co-owner of the restaurant. Things unfolded differently from that moment. He confirmed the plastic came from the squid and that it was a mistake and offered to cancel the whole bill at the table. We accepted that. Finally, I also feel that the couvert price is unproportionally high. 4 pieces of ham and two small _slices_ of cheese cost a total of 12 euros. Bit of a rip-off there in my opinion. Other than that, the squid and the salad my girlfriend ordered were actually tasty, so I think in general, the restaurant tried to do a good job, but that was an unfortunate incident, handled by an unprofessional waiter who also forgot to bring us the bill when asked first time. We reminded him again after 10 minutes of waiting.
This is one of the best restaurants that I have ever been to, perfect food, friendly staff and good prices.
Perfect food. They add their own touch to traditional dishes, which makes them unique and more than just delicious. There is a high level of sophistication in every thing they serve. Highly recommended if you are in Malaga. It is a bit pricey though, but it is worth it.
Wonderful food, wonderful service. I went here 3 times in a week. It is not expensive, considering what you get. I left happy every time.If it is full, check the other side of the street, they have another place. Same menu, different name.
We stumbled upon this place and it was a delightful surprise. Excellent service and really tasty food. Definitely a step above the other tapas I’ve had in Malaga. I will visit again.
Very good place. Small restaurant. Nice decoration. Nice staff. Very good food. I’d say that this place is between regular bar and aspiring restaurant. I spent here nice time.
Fantastic tapas with a twist. If you are fed up with the standard tapas this is a must. Reservation suggested as it is popular. Rightly so. Also does main courses. We will return!
If you want to have tapas with a fresh touch, Terral Gastrobar is the place. We asked the owner to compose a tapas meal for us, from his own choice and we were taken by surprise. The restaurant itsellf is just a hole in the wall but when the food is so great, thats secondary. You should try it!
Environment: Minimalistic design without being ambitious. Casual without being too noisy. It’s kind of seen and be seen place too.Food and Drinks: They have ambition to ramp up the traditional tapas food focusing on the favourite ingredient - jamon iberico. They could improve the wine list & make an effort to their cocktail drinks as they lack luster.Service: There were two waiters on the floor - while one was just on the standard, the other one raised the bar higher.LATEST REVIEW: 201710
Very good food ! The Tuna tartare and sweet pork are really special and very very tasty! And no its not cheap but its absolutely worth it
Fantastic. Food amazing a different kind of tapas. The staff are very attentive but not too in your face. Excellent
There are certain cons and pros.Food is what can be called an authors cuisine, beautifully decorated and tasty. Service is very attentive and supports all the dishes with comments about them, which is nice.At the same time it is over priced, especially if to talk about tapas or tapas size of the dishes. In addition it is quite small and has only high chairs, so you need to keep this in mind.
*Very tasty food.* We shared a lot of tapas and everything was fantastic: salad with cheese, tuna tatar, spicy pork, creamy prawn and tortilla are highly recommended! They have a delicious olive oil. The rose wine was also great. The staff was welcoming, attentive and very nice. We will come back.
Tried the gastronomic menu. Consists of 6 plates. 2 were great, and the rest was in my opinion spoiled because of an overdoses of jamon in one or another way. It made it all a bit to salty. I really felt disappointed when I walked out. Having said that.....I think if you take the individual plates, you will make a better choice. Some of them coming out of the kitchen looked really nice. Staff is really nice and asked me for feedback, which I gave. Maybe I will go back one day, but will definately choose then from the menu...but still first in need to "recover" from the 70 Euros spend on the menu ( without the white dessert wine.....must have forgotten that one...;-)
The food was amazing ! So good tapas, and a great concept. One free tapas plate with every drink you order. All of the dishes tasted amazing.
