106 Portland St, Manchester M1 4RJ, Manchester
Restaurant serving all-you-can-eat buffet dishes from around the world, cooked in front of diners.
Located in the heart of Manchester City Centre with many bus options, TOPS Buffet offers variety of Chinese, Indian and continental dishes. There are also a range of desserts but there are three major negatives.Firstly, this is the only buffet I went where I have to pay for a two year old boy, it is surprising to me as most buffet restaurants offered free buffet for children less than 5 years.Secondly, as a Muslim, you have to be carefully in selecting your dishes as there are many non halal and pork options. Although they indicate Halal and vegetarian options, but you have to look carefully. Finally, the place is usually crowded, so if you need a quiet and serene environment looks elsewhere.
Most food are designed to local customers and not authentic. Cosmo buffet is better than this one.One of the receptionists is not good at customer service. After I know the restaurant doesnt do student discount, I made a joke you are pushing clients to other buffet and she didnt care at all.
This place is amazing. My daughter been before, so as a family with 2yr old grandchild in toe we decided to go .opens at 16:30pm, we did pre-book because of how popular and busy it. Its all you can eat buffet for £19 each ,we didnt have to pay for grandson. Every kind of food. The massive chocolate fountain ⛲ was tops. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. Only down the drinks not included.
Bang average. We found the staff to be very rude, from door staff to waiters. Find it strange you pay first before eating, presumably so you cant complain and have to pay in full? Also found it bizarre they come and demand money for drinks whilst youve got a mouthful of food.Food was average. Mass produced, and a lot of the snacks like samosas are very obviously bought in bulk, frozen and re-cooked.Also worth noting the floor is an absolute death trap. People slipping all over the place.Wouldnt return and certainly wouldnt recommend.
So much to choose from! I was in my element at this place, the quality of food was good! I would definitely recommend and I’d visit again if I was in the area! You pay for the buffet at the reception in the way in and then drinks can be purchased at the table while your seated. Friendly staff and a unique robot carrying plates around.
I loved it here. This is the best buffet I have been to. Friendly staff, nice and cozy atmosphere. A.I in use and most importantly the variety of delicious dishes. Definitely recommend it
Fairly well run. Some queuing and patience is needed, but overall its a decent place to eat some tasty food in plentiful supply.
£20 pp makes me think twice, do i really want to pay that much for what i eat which is usually one plate of food, sometimes two. I would go more often if it was around £15 pp. I have been a few times with family, my nephew only ate two slices of pizza & the price is still the same. Food is nice & ok amount of choices, but desserts could do with updating as not enough of a choice, like some of the other places nearby.
Great choice of indian, chinese & english food all served buffet style. Reasonably priced drinks. Can get a bit loud if its very busy. Lots of kids wandering round with plates trying to get as much cake & ice-cream as they can fit!
The saying you get what you pay for is absolutely correct about Tops. My friend wanted to eat in Tops and I didnt. The food is awful and I would much rather go to a good Chinese restaurant and have one dish than an all you can eat buffet. I will certainly not be returning!
Booking advised! Very busy Chinese Buffet restaurant. Pre-pay at reception. Drinks paid separately. Vast selection of food to choose from, including fresh/made to order. Eat as much as you like for a fixed price. We went on a Thursday evening. It was very busy but there were no empty bowls, everything was hot and fresh. Great value! Drinks reasonably priced.
Attended as a prebooked party of 35 guests for a 50th birthday party. Didnt particularly feel like any thought had gone into where we were allocated and we were split on 4 separate tables in rows which meant it made it hard to socialise throughout the meal. So much faffing with separate drinks orders and so many mistakes made with drinks orders ie wrong drinks, double payments, missing drinks from lists ordered and this was before wed even got through the starters. The massive choices of foods from around the world was fantastic. I stuck mainly to Chinese food and what I ate for my starter and main, I absolutely loved as did nearly all the remaining party of diners. Really underwhelmed by the quality of the desserts and although they look like they are going to taste amazing as they look, sadly this wasnt the case. Not a fan of synthetic cream filled or topped mini cake sponge slices and although there was a large variety of different looking sponges, every one tasted pretty much identically bland and screamed for some sweet flavour! The cold bananas and custard pudding was the best tasting dessert. I was going to try dipping a marshmallow into the chocolate fountain until I spotted disguarded sticks and marshmallows piling up at the foot of the fountain. Not the most tempting of sights! All in all, we had a really nice 90 minute slot before we were required to vacate the table. Id of liked to have been allowed a bit longer given the large party number. I emailed the restaurant a few days before to ask of I could decorate the the on advance to guests arriving and also asked that because many guests were travelling from other cities, counties and one from another country to be there for the meal and celebration, if there were any delays, would there be any wriggle room on the table time scale. I received a very blunt response telling me I could decorate the tables with balloons 10 mins before 35 guests were set to decend on the place and in regard to any time extension, I was told, and I quote "NO table times extended available"I know people queue round the block to get into Topps on a Saturday night and I can understand why for the massive choice of fresh savoury dishes they have available for diners to feast on but personally, the dessert is a big part of enjoying the dining out experience and I was left really disappointed at the quality and standard of the ones they had to offer. I wouldnt book a large party for a celebration at this venue again but Id deffo pop in with a few pals if I was out drinking in Manchester and get a good savoury fill to soak up the beer!
Of our group of 6 people 2 of whom hardly ate anything, 4 have been badly ill for 3 days immediately after eating here. The quality of the food is like stuff you buy from Iceland. Ive never seen bright orange chicken tikka sauce that literally was glowing the dark. The freshly cooked food portion size wasnt worth the huge queue youd have to stand in. Id say only the duck wraps were equal to a regular chinese restaurant, if Id been served any of the other meals Id have complained.
This time was not brilliant. Place was not clean and food quality was disappointing
This TOPS is great! Atmosphere is chill and cool with a wide variety of foods and the staff is also really friendly. You can tell making the customers happy is their main priority.Food is pretty good from the taste one can taste that the food is fresh.and the desserts are to die for and for their prices it’s 100% worth it.
Disgusted with this place today. Saw a dead insect in the bottom of one of the trays of food. Told a lady that worked there and she walked away. Saw her talk to a man, who looked over and then just carried on with what he was doing. Had to go to reception before anybody bothered to remove the tray of food 🤮. Very poor choice of vegetarian food and desserts. Water dispenser dispensing warm water. Couldn’t really bring myself to eat much after the insect incident so pretty much wasted my money. Definitely will not be visiting again.
A good place for a family buffet or group buffet hang out. Being in the city centre, free parking is scarce, so you might consider taking a taxi or bus to the venue. Tops can do with more variety, but overall great placePlan to make a reservation if the group/family is large for proper seating
Very good food, also I like the robot that brings you plates.
Food all nice and fresh . Que wasnt too long to get in . All staff on hand and friendly . Food was topped up fresh reasonable price 18.95
Awful place to eat. Firstly the waiter came over with drinks as we were mid eating and demanded being paid ( we know this is how it works but he could have been a lot friendlier about the situation ).We then had a waiter come behind one member of the party and sneeze directly behind him, I know it is involuntary to sneeze but to move away from customers eating should be something a waiter should do for hygiene. Instead my party member was sneezed on.We then found mold on our food so I quietly went to a member of staff who told me to go find the manager, I then saw 3 other people until someone got the manager. The manager that came over to us was extremely arrogant and told us it was because the food is left there for a long time and these things happen sometimes. He offered to get us a freshly made item and walked away from the table and didn’t come back to resolve anything after we found green mold on an item of food!Another member of the party went back to the manager 10 minutes later to see what he was going to do about the mold. He then began to argue with the member of our party and continued to tell us it just happens. This then clearly annoyed us as it had ruined our experience and we didn’t trust the hygiene of the food. He then left once againHe then came back about 10 minutes after the 2nd conversation and was extremely rude to the party member and continued to explain it just happens. After a long discussion ( with people now able to hear the conversation as the manager had confronted our party member directly next to the foodhe decided to give us 1 refund for the person who had the mold on their food, which is all we would have wanted in the first instance.Once we had received our refund we stayed and had a drink to try and lighten our mood again, as we were doing this the manager was talking to security and another gentleman looking over towards our table which made us feel incredibly uncomfortable. We then decided to leave as we did not feel comfortable eating the food or being around the management and other staff.£50 wasted! Don’t eat here unless you want to be treated with no respect or risk eating mold!
After leaving a pub where we had to wait an hour for food, this was just a few minutes away. The food is top class,it has all around the world food.It was £20.per person and you can just pick any food you want.We had drinks as well.Very clean the staff very polite and friendly and helpful. We would definitely go back there.Food was gorgeous.
Personally I am not keen on the buffet style of dining but it was great value for money and there was something for everyone in our party. Would have preferred to pay at the end for any drinks that we ordered but other than that, a pleasant experience overall.
Our 2nd visit to Tops. Seated very quickly for a Saturday night .Very efficient serviceFood varied & as always with amazing amount of choice. Fabulous food but my only criticism was all my favourite vegetables were inedible , though cooked to perfection were so so salty I had to leave them..shame as most of my mains are veggies. Hope this can be addressed as we love to eat here.
Excellent food, great choice.Extremely busy and noisy.I get the concept(buffet, eat as much as you like but putting a time limit on how long you can be there is a bit off putting.Liked herded cattle!
The place is big, nice and cleaned.Buffet was good, great varieties to choose from.Customer services wasnt too bad.
Great if you are vegetarian... if you like meat & seafood dont bother. I tried lots of types of meat dishes from ribs, curries, stir fries etc.... the meat in the dishes was dry, over cooked or chewy or fatty, pizza was just grease, bajis were mushy stodge, seafood haha joke... found some prawns in their shells at a side counter... they were dry tough and chewy, the duck was shredded to a millimeter of its life and a completely dry pile of shreds. On a positive note, the broccoli and mushroom dishes were nice, the rice and noodles were nice. Deserts very very poor except for icecream which was ok. The staff were the most miserable people ever. Awful place... nobody dressed up... save your money ... dissapointing
Very good food. Everything was well cooked and prepaired. This is one of the biggest selection of different food that I have ever encounteted at a Buffett. They even cooked us fresh steak on demand. The entire venue was very clean and neat and cleaning was done the whole time that we were there. The deserts was also out of this world with all kinds of cakes and puddings. There is even a chocolate fountain. There were 3 different flavours of icecream. Everything was very fresh. The things that needed to be warm was warm and the things that needed to be cold was actually cold. The staff was verry friendly and helpfull. From entering the venue, getting food, ordering drinks even going to the toilet, there were always some one to assist you. The price you pay at this venue is very reasonable. I would suggest tis venue to every one that I know and even people I do not know. I am not from the UK, I am from South Africa and are on a road trip through the UK. This was my first time in Manchester, but believe me, I will make very sure that when I am in this area again, I will visit Tops Buffet Testaurant again. To the management ans staff I can just say thank you and keep up the good work.
Not sure why people are b*tching about this place, our party of 4 found it top notch place. The food was fresh, tasty and the variety was huge. Love that they have free tap water, also ice cubes to go with it. The staff was polite, maybe a bit quick to jump to get your drinks order before you get a chance to have a proper look at the drinks menu but I suppose it can be a sign of quick service - depends on how you look at it .We shall definitely visit again when in Manchester.
Lives up 2 its name. A top buffet. Food was beautiful. The pork in plum sauce was both, myself and my daughters favourite. Staff were excellent, a friendly smile on arrival and when leaving. Really, give it a visit.
It was the worst experience ever, an employee wanted to fight one of my family members because it was time to go but the children wanted to take a simple picture because one of them was celebrating their birthday. Their were so rude that didn’t even let my angry talk to them in the nice way, racing there voice toward us. Bad service and they even told us to call the police like us nothing for them and i really find it rude and no manners. I honestly believe that the people that hired this employee did a bad job because I believe there are people out there that would love to be working there. If I was you I would look for some where else that i know I will have a good time with family.
The White male staffs were rude. We were told to come out, because they were about to close. as we were leaving the White staffs started pushing everyone out and was trying to pick a fight with us.I dont recommend you to go there if you want to enjoy your dinner or brunch
First time dining here, and what can I say… a very pleasant buffet, had loads of choice and plenty of food for everyone! Food was delicious&hot, and the service of drinks was speedy too!Only thing I can say to improve on, is the price as it was quite pricey, and cleanliness of toilets, as the floors were very slippy and had toilet roll on floor.Overall, thank you TOPS, I will be returning if I come back to Manchester!!
Well what can i say.... in Manchester for a weekend break with the family, booked into the Midland hotel ask one of the hotel reception staff about TOPS Buffet Restaurant he said it good, well how wrong he was.... walked into TOPS Buffet Restaurant said good evening to first member of staff just inside the door and he completely ignored me & my family went to the counter and paid for entry then got seated by a lovely man who was wearing a black shirt (looked more liked managementfood was probably the worst we ever experienced , ask a member of staff if they had plain rice seriously he never understood me, we tried different dishes thinking it cant be worse than the previous choice but it was, stopped trying the food went to look at the desert options OMG it was the first time my 11 year old daughter said no to desert.... so did we. Spent over £100 entry & drinks what a waste of money. Ive got to say the best thing i consumed at TOPS Buffet Restaurant was the 2 bottles of still mineral water. Our visit was on 3rd July 2022
This restaurant is pretty big with a nice choice of dishes. I loved the noodles, fried rice, and other Chinese chicken dishes. The beef was a little hard for my taste though. They also have sushi, which was nice. The selection of dessert was good too, with a variety of cakes and also ice cream.
Really tasty food! Very busy, but plenty of space at the table. Staff a bit too quick to remove plates and glasses when theyre not completely finished with and bathroom floors need the stickiness removing. The food made up for everything though, really good.
Fish was undercooked. Indian cuisines made up of cheap kebabs imitating chicken, lamb.etc. complained to manager who refused to revise bill. Others may like it. My standards are way different. I eat in restaurants all the time. Not acceptable by my standards. Wont be going again. Very chavi!!
Went during Saturday lunchtime, as hadnt been in years and used to like it. This place seems to have massively gone downhill, with very poor food quality - Even for a buffet style - and a very limited range. I accept lunch has less, but it was still a very poor range.I definitely wont returnMy recommendation: Pay a bit more for somewhere like Cosmo or one of the other places nearby
I started at 6.06pm and first of all you need to pay before entering the dining hall. The staff are respectful. Also you need to pay for drinks separately. By that time of the day, it was not crowded. It however fills up really quick. The turnover is high anyway so as more customers come in some leave. The dishes are varieties and so options are plentiful. For me the dishes were nice and nicely warm-to-hot.I definitely will be back. I love this place.
This place is very nice but they should have more fruit options and more food options the price its all right I cant complain.
Went with the family to Tops on a Sunday afternoon. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. It was very busy and the atmosphere inside was brilliant. They actually have a Robot bring out the plates witch we all found amusing 😂 There is so many different choices of foods and deserts. I really enjoyed the steak and prawns from the cooking stations (deliciousThe staff are very polite and cant do enough for you. Well worth the money and Im looking forward to when I go again.Keep up the good work 🎊🍜🍝🥙🍕🍗🥩🍰🍩🍻🍷
Best buffet I have ever been to.Very wide selection of food. Over 50 different dishes.Chinese, Indian, pizza plus much more. Incredible sweet selection chocolate fountain.
Great food, loved the robots.Shame the waiter who brought us drinks would not bring a glass of water for one of our party.
Place is nice and massive, different varieties of food and lots of dessert choices. But in my personal opinion, food is not the tastiest. I ordered a coke and it tasted really weird in flavour... I didnt try the meat cooked at the moment though, as there were massive queues for it, which is a good sign. Good atmosphere and nice, kind & hardworking staff making sure the place runs smoothly.
For an eatery with your family and friends, look no further than TOPS. Really on top of your game, keep it up.Would be glad if something could be done about the long waiting hours.
I heard about this open buffet from a friend, read some reviews and didn’t like it, but I said let’s give a try. In general the food taste is average, nothing special. Lower your expectations if you are coming here, for what you paid for! I couldn’t find ice cream, requested some, they said they will bring from another branch, but our time slot is ended before they do so. When we arrived we asked for another table as ours is at the toilet entrance, but they said all other tables are booked, unfortunately this is not true, I am attaching a photo of the empty tables before we leave. I can’t believe that the manager is a liar! I will never come here again and I will advise my friends not to visit this restaurant.
On portman street In manchester you will find Tops an eat all you can Buffet restaurant - price 19.50 per person great value for money. when the restaurant is busy you get given an hour & half slot but have to say are Christmas party was not kicked out the door we all had a great time . Staff were very helpful and welcoming. They had a good choice of food, Drinks order is taken at your table . The place seemed clean from what we see. I have been to this restaurant a few times before and would recommend it. You can book ahead or just walk in.
Read the edit as well pls!The interior of the restaurant is very nice! But I had a very weird experience in this restaurant. You have to pay before you are seated for the food, for the drinks you pay separately at the table. We went for lunch for my husband’s birthday, they had Chinese and Indian food but they were not clearly separated, like you won’t know what’s Indian or Chinese food as I don’t really like Indian food. Then the food: all kind of fried chicken were so greasy/oily and hard!!! Not nice at all!The fried rice and mains were not bad to be honest. Also it was a shame they didn’t have sushi’s during lunch time! Then the Indian waiters and waitress were very friendly. Not enough options for dessert! Name boards were placed wrong next to dishes…,For a restaurant with such an interior you would expect more! Really disappointedEDIT!!!the evening food was much better. I went another day as there were not much Chinese buffet open due COVID. But this time the food was actually much better than the lunch buffet. Things were not fried Romeo times or something you know what I mean, it was not greasy and oily this time. More dessert options and the name boards were placed right! A total different experience!
Loved been back here. Very safe and comfortable following covid regulations.Staff were helpful. The food was lovely
Did not start well, man on the door was very rude, needs to remember you are supposed to welcome people, not treat them like kids and demand they line up against the wall repeating it. Felt he was one step away from pushing people!! Cannot fault them following government guidelines, mask, hand gel and one way system inside. Chicken was bit dry and beef chewy, but noodles and mushrooms were really nice, good mixture, but sweets not much choice. Staff hover too much making it feel rushed and not very relaxed! I personally would not go back, but it could have been due to restrictions currently in place so could be doing them an injustice. If you like a buffet then would say try for yourself.
Not worth the money £40 for 2 adults in the evening. Very limited menu Tops continues to attempt to be all you can eat however your limited to 5 choices for starters, mains and deserts. Poorly presented food and tasted bland. Desert portions was tiny and looked old and on the turn! We both left more than we ate and regretted picking this restaurant for our Friday night meal out! Never again!
