Szamos cafe - Cafe in Budapest, Hungary
They have no vegan cakes, the music is just a noise and they try to take your food before you finish it , but the plums cake with the dark chocolate and marzipan is wonderful and also the hot chocolate in made from real chocolate
Tasty cakes with a lot of variety to choose from.
They didnt have half of the orders. And we werent the only ones.🤷🏽♂️
We were looking for a place where we can try traditional cakes and we found Muvesz which was a perfect place to try Dobosz Cake and Esterhazy cake which were both divine! The honey caffe late was great as well and so was the vanilla coffee.
Weird waitress, instead of smiling to the guests , she threw the money on the table !!Service is everything but unfortunately they have bad service !not recommended at all !There are many places around with friendly staff ;)
Really good confectionary! A bit expensive but honestly worth it. We had coffee and ice cream, it was amazing! Took some marzipan to go and that was really good too :)
Great ice cream!
Visited Szamos a week ago. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Their iced coffee and their cakes are amazing. One of the places in the city where the staff makes you feel welcome. Congratulations!!!
Excellent experience! High end desserts, pure pleasure.
Nice place to relax with good choice of coffee and pastries
Service is horrible. They hate customers that speaks only English. And the waiter didnt speak so good as well so I could not ask about the foodIn addition, I wanted to order something. And the waiter just said no, and told me to take her recommendation. I said OK, and it was not very tasty.
Cakes are nothing special. They are just "sweet". If you eat some bread with sugar it would taste something similar.Coffee is just weak, almost like water.Quite disappointed with the place, unfortunately :(
Very disappointed. Visited here some years ago and it seems to have gone downhill. Quite pricey given the overall quality of the cakes and coffee and the level of service which was nothing special.
Great place to eat delicious desserts
We were waiting for staff to serve us for roughly 20 min. Very bad service, considering they charge 15% for service ... for this service? Wow...They even distinguish prices for take away from dining inside 😅
One of the best place that serves traditional Hungarian sweets and coffee. Visited in December last year and it was an unforgettable experience. The staff were very warm and friendly. Recommended if you are in town.
Amazing place. If you are in budapest I recommend to grab a cup of coffee there. Food is really good and the place speaks for itself.
Three things I did not like about this place )):1. Old furniture and holey sofas2. Absolutely disgusting dirty in a rest room!!!3. And of course price for all this list
The quality of coffee and cakes are good , but the service you get is not good at all , specially that you pay a service charge for each item , yesterday I asked a glass of water next to my coffee from waitress , she said okay but it didnt arrive and she ignored it .This was not a nice experience .
The best delicious cakes and coffee!!!
I had pretty high expectations since it is a traditional Hungarian cafe and people said it’s worth visiting. Unfortunately, the reality showed the opposite.First of all, the stuff is unfriendly and inattentive, or at least two women who served us. Secondly, we were not offered a menu and sugar, though, other tables had both.P.S. That’s the service you pay 15% of the service charge for since it’s included in the final bill.
The cafe was good, the atmosphere okay but the service was not really good. No greeting, long waiting until the order is taken and unfriendly staff. But still you need to pay 15% service fee…
The only reason I came hear was because the more popular konditeri across the plaza was all full. The service here is probably the worst I have had I the 20 years I have traveled in Hungary. The only reason one would visit is that the dessert they serve is pretty good.
Tasty desserts and coffee served in a nice and professional manner. Its worth having a look inside to catch a glimpse of the beautiful interiors.
We had a terrible experience here. After we waited for more than 10 minutes without any waiter receiving us, we kindly asked for the waiter who greeted us with a very rude attitude. I had not said anything and she said "30 minutes", without even letting me say anything. No greeting, no apology, nothing at all. After I asked if what she meant was that the order would take 30 minutes, she replied a very rude "yes."I asked if a different order would take the same amount of time (it would be a simple slice of cake, which was already made and displayed for customers to seeand she nodded. It was very rude and unpleasant, we do not recommend this place at all.
Had a lemonade and Mozart ice cream both where really good (although maybe not the best combination).
Daily lunch menu is great and cheap. Cafes and cakes are dreamingly good. 😍
There are delicious desserts here and polite staff.
not to be confused w the one near Parliament. This branch is a cut above the rest. Best Dobos cake.
A cafeteria from another century!! Very delicious coffee and their sweets were mouth watering!! Give it a try 😁☕
This place was one of my favorite cake places after abandoning Café Gerbeaud due to their very rude waitresses. Szamos had great cakes and an interesting decor and was in a spot on location. The last years however the service went downhill due to the high demand. We have to wait for long times to get a table, then we have to wait for a long time to get our orders, and to get our food and then to get our bill. Unfortunately the attitude of waiters/ waitresses also changes for the worse, I heard them shouting at people when they ask for table etc. No matter how nice the cakes and location are, we will not coming back here.
Nice and calm (although it is situated in the centreenvironment, pleasant staff(only women :)). Cappuccino did not taste right to me, too milky. But cakes was great. It really worths visiting it.
The building itself is very beautiful, the interior design is splendid - unfortunately all my positive feedback stops here.First of all you will get seated where the staff tells you to - you cant just go in and sit inside the confectionery. If its next to the front door youll get a seat there - its not pleasent, I can tell you.I had the famous Dobos cake - and it was dry and spongy. When we complained about the seating, they told us its a management decision.Usually in Szamos confectionery there are two prices for a piece of cake - to eat there (which is a higher priceor to go. If you eat there your cake, you will get to pay an extra 15% service charge on top of all of it. And for what...? For a spongy cake and get seated next to the door. By management decision. Very poor service, I must say.
Amazing cakes, tasty coffee and and nice ancient style, very cosy and definetly worth a visit
Delicious cremeschnitte. Sour service. No AC 🥵
Very nice place, highly recommended! We asked for the breakfast meal and this is what we got!
The place for cake and coffee with great stuff that are ready to help.
I was ordering my wedding cake here and the staff was really helpful and friendly. I am a big fun of Szamos products and it was an obvious choice for me to order my cake from them. Always good quality and amazing taste! Thanks for my cake again!
I loved the Caramel Coffee cake, but they have the great Hungarian classics too. A bit tacky, not a historical café....
Food lush, service is exceptional, no savoury menu available at lunch, overall fabulous darling
Truly wonderful pastries, great coffee, gorgeous interior, and superb staff. What more could you ask for? The plum dumpling cake was unlike anything I have ever had before, with many layers of chocolate cake, plum jam, ganache, and a marzipan plum dumpling embedded in a light, creamy mousse. The sour cherry linzer torte and this years national cake were also excellently prepared. Add to this the fact that it was quite cheap and the portions were generous.
I hardly understand why it is so popular. We took some pastries away from their point on Vici str. They were good (cookies with jam or marmalade and moonlike cookies with nuts), but nothing special. The next day we visited them near Parlament building. Sat inside ( as we understood later, inside was self- assistant zone, where only fast dishes and sweet menu are served and outside was waiters -assisted zone, where one can order from main menu). Ordered 1 omelet, 1 fried eggs, 2 coffee, 2 cakes. Cakes and coffee we got almost at once, but the other meal was prepared in....40 minutes! Though the restaurant was half-empty. About the cakes: I didnt like neither Dobush nor Marzipan: too sweet, oily, simple, dry. It seemed to me that dough and chocolate cream were of the same recipe in both cakes. Also there is a chocolate museum, but I didnt visit it (it is for extra price, but I dont know how much per person).
How this place has such a high rating is beyond me. the cakes tasted like they had been sitting there for a month before being served. they have no flavor at all and dry as hell. I got the worst stomachache after and couldnt sleep all night because of it. the servers are incompetent, unattentive, and extremely rude. Yet there is a MANDATORY 15% service charge. They dont care if you have an enjoyable time nor not.
Very tasty cakes and good coffee. Prices are good , around 3 euros per piece of cake, only down side is they brought us two small glasses of gassed water which we thought is complementary (as it is common in some restaurantsand as we didnt order them, yet they charged us for it as well. Still i would highly recommend it and hope to come again.
Really nice place for a tea afternoon. I definitely recommend the hot chocolate 100% cacao. We tried the chocolate cake it was really tasty and not too creamy. Good service and nice and traditional Hungarian decoration.
Excellent.Very famous chocolatierTheir products are everywhere in every shop/ supermarket/ airportOne of Hungary symbolsI bought a box of chocolates with marzipanDelicious!I recommend it very muchEven to just come in and taste
Wonderful old fashioned cafe. Excellent choice of famous cakes like dobostorta or Esterhazy torta.
Great desserts. Excellent service. Not too expensive
Poor service. FYI: They charge you 15%of your bill for service fee which I can understand if servers offer good service whether they have good food or not. But it was so poor, today is my 4th day in Budapest, I am exploring all the good restaurants and cafes and I can tell you this place is the worst. Oh yes, not everyone was bad but only one waitress had kinda rude and an attitude kinda looking down on me.Best experince ever with 15% of service fee !But the food and desert were all alright, what a tragedy that they can offer such a poor service with good quality of food, desert and super nice and elegant interior of the building..
A great little coffee house with a beautiful interior, decorated with Herendi porcelain. Szamos is traditionally famous for its hand-made marzipan desserts but you will also find amazing cakes and hand-made bonbons here. When ice cream is in season make sure to try the bonbon one - chocolate ice cream with walnuts and cognac sour cherries. If you wish to have some rest when walking around Váci street this is the perfect location for some treats.
