320-2 Yeonghwa-dong, Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, Ansan
18th-century city walls with 48 original structures surrounding the old heart of the city.
One of the most beautiful places in all of Korea. It has an amazing river that runs down the middle of the walled city and there are a multitude of things to do. Archery, Ballon rides, tour car, chicken Street, mural street, vendor market, walled gates, special rooftop cafes, best pizza in suwon and the list goes on.
The monument is great to see, but there is not much else to do. Good for pictures though
This ancient city wall is great to visit. No matter if day or night time, the buildings are beautiful. The whole round takes about two and a bit hours.
Beautiful, authentic and interesting place. Nice to walk around the walls, to travel inside the old city and to look at the views. Very recommended
Super placeU need visit Korea art museum
Certainly the biggest draw for Suwon, and one of the biggest tourist attractions in all of Korea, this 200+ year old fortress is great. Nowadays you can walk along the walls for free, making a circle around the old city (mostly 3-story shops nowwhile surrounded on all sides by mountains and a modern city of over 1,000,000 people. Despite the modern world encroaching, its still pretty easy to see how incredible this place must have seemed when it was first built.Walking the walls can take anywhere from 2 hours to 6 hours, depending on how far you decide to walk, how many breaks you take, and whether you decide to walk or take a cab back to your starting point. My recommendation is walking the walls on the way out and then walking outside the walls on the way back. Although walking the wall is cool, seeing it from outside is certainly more impressive. And best of all, it is free. The only thing that costs money is a visit to the emergency palace, and even that is super cheap. Highly recommended
Came here to see the brightest moon on chuseok after 100 years! Difficult to park here. Though quite big but still too small for everyone! You can bring your mat and enjoy the day or night together with your loved ones. Take a walk around the fortress, which is so big! There is also a place where you can practice archery.
It was built from 1794 to 1796 by King Jeongjo of the Joseon dynasty to house and honour the remains of his father, Prince Sado.
This ks Unesco World Heritage Site. Get some YouTube information about the history and then visit. Theres archery tickets through which you can try archery, its nice. Theres car ticket which will ride you to the most of outer side of the fortress. Very well maintained and must visit. Theres a balloon ride nearby, you can try that too.
Great walk up and gives an overview lookout of Suwon City 👍🏻
A really great time exploring the fortress wall. I highly recommend hiking to the top of the archer tower for an amazing view of the city and a chance to ring the massive bell 3 timed for W1000.I really want to come back to explore the rest of the fort.
Its so amazing and interesting. There are different ancient gates that was used way back Joseon Dynasty. We tried the suwon tourist train. It was an amazing experience!! We get to roam around the hwaseong fortress easily. Will definitely visit again and again
This is a MUST VISIT place if you ever come to Suwon! The fortress is free to visit and you can go up the defense wall and also see the city views from the above! There is also a beautiful pond that is popular for picnics and especially in summer it was super beautiful as everything was green and reflecting in the water! I am sure it is just as beautiful at other seasons as well!
Hwaseong fortress is a beautiful place to walk around!! The views are great and you get to learn a little about history. Some parts of the fortress are quite the hike so wear comfortable shoes~
It was a wonderful trip. I enjoyed the history and had a small tour inside the temporary fortress. Highly recommend.
Must visit! Beautiful fortress totally underrated. Only 1 hr away from Seoul, easily reached by train using line 1. It sourrounds the Suwon city center, and provides great photo op apportunities. This UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
This place is a historical and cultural city founded by King Jeongjo. The 22nd king of Joseon in 1796. A round this place have a big local daily market. Also have a lot of restaurants. Many tourists visit for olle trail. I will reccomend this place.
Suwon Hwacheong Fortress. A UNESCO heritage world site. I came thinking that the fortress is located somewhere but it turns out that there is a town located within the fortress (makes sense since Hwaseong Haenggung Palace or also known as the Hwaseong Temporary Palace is located inside here tooand that includes their famous fried chicken street. Walked along the walls from the northern gate to the south eastern gate before my legs reminded me I’m getting old.
Unesco world heritage, castle made by "jeongjo" great king in choson dynasty, 18th century.A rare castle in Korea. Because Koreans are a people who want peace, not war. This castle construction, prepared to war against Japan or China. But this architectural detail have beautiful shapes, you can feel echo environment friendly.Korea (chosonis a homogeneous nation for 5000 years.if when China, Japan or Mongol invaded korea (chosen), korea fight bravely, without surrender.
The sunset and the view of suwon is perfect from the top most point. We visited on a weekday and there was no one on the top.
its nothing special, but important heritage of the history.therere 11gates in this castle.the most beautiful gate is janganmun, which is toward to the north, hanyang, old capital, also where the king lived in ancient kingdom.
I am past 50 years old. The steps give me a reasonable work out. Climbed up to the summit. Qorth the effort.
Beautiful site, rich with Korean culture and history. You can literally walk right along the walls inside the fortress. Admissions are so cheap… less than $1. I highly recommend visiting, especially if you’re in the area.
Suwon was one of four main regional government centers during the Joseon dynasty. Hwaseong Fortress, built to protect the city, was designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site on December 12, 1997 for its historical value. The fortress offers various performances daily as well as the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival every fall. The walls stretch for 5.7 kilometers, with Paldalsan Mountain at the center. The fortress, constructed from 1794 to 1796, was built as a display of King Jeongjo’s filial piety towards his father and to build a new pioneer city with its own economic power. There is a lot of cool stuff inside. Restaurants and cool shows every once in awhile. The tour guides can speak English very well.
Whenever I want a glimpse of Korean culture I come here..I love my neighborhood 😌 ☺ 🥰
While the steps were very steep and strenuous, I absolutely loved walking along the fortress and watching the sunset. Prepare to sweat!
This is a great day trip, if I ever have family come to visit this will be one of the first stops. They have an archery experience near the gift shop, and a short walk from the parking area is a great museum to go visit.
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is an UNESCO world heritage site and main attraction of Siwon city. You have to bring enough time to see it throughly
favorite place in Suwon. This place you can enjoy with the Korea Traditional activities and learn more about the history of Korea.
It was very nice and meaningful place to visit, but there were some places I could not access with my stroller, lack of directions within the castle so I got lost couple of times and there were some spots needed maintenance.
There is a awesome view in front of Gakroo on the way from the west gate to the Mt Paldalsan. The long and dense reed field so attractive to everyone as a photo zone for youngsters, a hide and seek place for kids.It is a perfect place for you to enjoy lovely season. If you love to exploring some challenge, I recommend to choose outside way to get to PaldalsanMt.If you accompany elderly family, I recommend a path which goes across the middle of the Mt.You will surely love Suwon Hwaseung.
Great UNESCO historical site! Well maintained with good explanation of the fortress and the history. Grabbed lunch and hit Daiso down at the end in the market.Worth the trip, especially after being stuck in HPCON Charlie!
Honestly this place is a great day trip destination I actually went on a date here and we just had a great time we didnt really plan anything out we just literally walked all around the fortifications found little shops and cafes all around there it was such a wonderful time. theres a lot of walking involved so definitely wear some nice shoes if you do decide to go I would suggest also going to see the temple and I would also suggest keeping in mind to wear sunscreen too. Just really nice and beautiful.
Hwaseong Fortress is an impressive structure from the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910and the official fortress of Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do. The fortress, constructed from 1794 to 1796, was built as a display of King Jeongjo’s filial piety towards his father and to build a new pioneer city with its own economic power. The fortress wall stretches for a total of 5.52km and has a great variety of military facilities that are hard to find anywhere else. Four gates face each of the cardinal directions—Janganmun (north), Paldalmun (south), Changnyongmun (east), and Hwaseomun (west)—and the seven-arch style Sumun gates straddle the point where the nearby stream reaches the palace. Above the Sumun gates is a pavilion called Hwahongmun.
Hwaseong Fortress or Suwon Hwaseong is a fortification surrounding the centre of Suwon, the provincial capital of Gyeonggi-do, in South Korea. It was built from 1794 to 1796 by King Jeongjo of the Joseon dynasty to house and honour the remains of his father, Prince Sado. Sado had been executed by being locked alive inside a rice chest by his own father King Yeongjo after failing to obey a command to commit suicide. Located 30 kilometres (19 misouth of Seoul and enclosing much of central Suwon, the fortress includes King Jeongjos palace Haenggung. The site was designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. Suwoncheon, the main stream in Suwon, flows through the center of the fortress.
An absolute must for any visit to South Korea; you can easily spend an entire day here exploring the wall itself and the town through which the wall snakes through. There are several entry/exit points.
Really enjoyed the views and learning more about some 18th century Korean history! I cant wait to come back in the spring and summer to see it in full bloom and green!
Very impressive construction, about 1 hour by train and bus from Seoul center. Walking the whole tour can take you several hours if you take your time. The fortification is actually surrounded by modern constructions both inside and outside, so you can go back to city environment when you want. One side of the fortification runs on a mountain covered with a forest - a refreshing view when youre coming from Seoul for the day.Ticket to be allowed to walk around the wall is 1000 won (about 1€), you can buy it at one of the few ticket booth scattered around the fortification.View is even more beautiful and impressive at night, with the walls being lit.
One of the great tourist attractions of Korea. Showcasing the heritage of their past. Very organized and detailed. Highly recommend this place for couple or group visit. Its a kids friendly place too. You can find the bicycle rental here as well as breast feeding corner. The lower part of this place is the reception and official part of the palace. The original palace is on top of the hill. It closes around 5:30 pm. So better come early if you want to visit all the sections of the palace. The back part (Hill topof the palace can not be accessed from the front area. There is another path right besides the main entrance. And the hill top site doesnt require any tickets.
Awesome historic place to visit. It will take almost a full day to see the fortress and the surroundings. Looks so beautiful during the fall season. Its a UNESCO world heritage centre. And the admission ticket is just 1500 won which is quite cheap in Korea.
We walked about 20% of the fortress which is all you need to get a good idea for it. They had a kite shop nearby and the kids flew there’s next to the fortress which was cool. All in all it’s a good place to take the family on a day off.
Suwon Hwaseong is a dream fortress built by the king Jeongjo as a reformation ruler during the Joseon Dynasty. It is a second-to-none architectural structure we are proud of. Although many parts of the fortress had been damaged during the Japanese colonial era and Korean War, it had been repaired and restored since 1975 based on the”The Construction Records of the Hwaseong Fortress (Hwaseong Songyouk eugye)”, UNESCO memory of the world that records its construction conditions. The restored Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was registered ® as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 1977 as its superiority was recognized.Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is located in downtown area of Suwon and Dulle-gil Trail that stretches about 5.7km is formed long the fortress. There are diverse ways to enjoy 😉 the beauty of this Fortress. You may slowly take a walk around the Fortress, feeling the breath of king 🤴 Jeongjo who had love for the people and filial piety,or you may focus on Jeong yakyong’s excellent scientific achievement that demonstrates the highlight of civil engineering and construction. Just by strolling along the Fortress, you will enjoy fascinating artistic values as well as breathtaking landscapes. Experience a totally different scene anywhere on this connected trail.
Took the train south from Seoul to visit this fortress. It is a huge complex so be prepared to walk a lot. There are many amazing sites and views all around the fortress. When visiting I suggest you start at the Hwaseomun gate and go counter-clockwise. This way you go uphill first to the Seojangdae Command Post with fantastic views of the city and then it’s all downhill from there.
Hwasong palace is a fantastic place that catch your attention when you get close to it. Climbing on to the top of the mountain, this is what you expected to see. If you go up there at evening, then you can enjoy the whole city view at night. A lot of locals come here for jogging and excercising so please do not hesitate to have it a try. Anyway, it is on the mountain top so you are required to walk on hundreds of stairs to get there. Then be well prepaired. Have a nice and healthy trip by walking!
Great historical place, UNESCO World Heritage! The walking trail along the impressive wall is awesome with amazing views. The observation point near the peak of Paldal-san has a beautiful view on the Suwon city. Worth to see in daylight or at night. At night all the wall structures and the walking paths are highlighted.
Basically its one of the only tourist things to do in Suwon. Its nice to walk around but one wall is as nice as the next. There is a tethered hot air balloon along the wall so if you want to pay 18000 won, its a good experience.
Restored and now freshly looking traditional Korean fortress. It has walking routes alongside the wall, which is great, and it is possible to walk around in 2 hours or so. Some parts of the fortress are located on surrounding hills, so you may also take a look at central Suwon. Clean and neat In-fortress neighborhood is filled up with various restaurants and coffeehouses.
This fortress will impress ... any sightseer. It is an UNESCO world heritage site and for good reason, this was an absolute gem! It was a great way to spend a day or a few. You can hike the wall and then take a break and tuck into a local establishment for a bite to eat. It is fun for all ages. I will let my photos do the rest of the talking.
A relatively long hike if you are to walk the distance of the entire Hwaseong Fortress wall. Walking along the wall also provides for some decent views of parts of Suwon city. At the time of this post, admission was only 1000₩.
