Sushi Ryu - Sushi restaurant in Taipei, Taiwan
Worth its price
Food was phenomenal. The texture was my favorite. Neutral flavors with bursts of excitement. The sommelier recommended 2 sakes and they were way too bubbly. Minus 1 star for the sommelier recs.
二訪飽到天靈蓋握壽司對我來說有點大舍利要求少一點又會跟魚生比例不對整體上比第一次還好吃生熟食搭配的很好
Just like the very beginning, chef handled all our food while sous chef did the prep work. World class, consistent quality
Good food, good service
Good choice for sushi dinner
Very delicious omakase with careful hands and preparation of the various fish. Pleasantly surprised at the diversity of choices by the chef with our endless omakase, it was no short of my expectations. I can highly recommend.
One of the best sushi restaurant in Taipei. Top quality Japanese seafood is used.
Beautiful presentation, excellent food.
Good
Fresh and tasty sushi but It’s underwhelmingIt’s definitely not what I expected for the 7000 price tag.
Good is great. Yet a bit overpriced.
I went with a friend around August of 2020 to try this place. It was a Sunday so we wore very casual. There was not many patrons in the restaurant and those who were there are all very young and dressed very pretty. We by comparison looked like old hobos (although we both were under 50 but we are probably the oldest and the most casually dressed patrons there by age). We sat down and I asked for a beer. The beer didnt come after about 10 min. wait. Ive asked the waiter again for the beer and he motionlessly hand me a glass and a beer. We each ordered the $5,000 course, expecting some REAL GOOD food. The first was a cold dish, 3 pieces of hirame, which was so-so. Then came some sushi, it was also so-so. The chefs specialty, seared scallops baked in karasumi roe (烏魚子干貝)was quite special, but it was too salty and dry. Then after the sear scallop, they gave us some grilled fish. I thought this was the end of the sushi course after about 6 or 6 sushi but they told me there would be another 3 sushi course after the fish. I was curious about the order of these dishes as I have been to numerous sushi restaurants in both Taiwan and Japan (some with Michelin Star, some without), none of which would serve on a cold-hot-cold order of dishes. The chef explained to me that it is for the patrons to "change their pallet" so they would enjoy more of whats coming next. OK, this doesnt make sense, but its your restaurant, Im just here for you to feed me good food (so far was only ok). Then the last 3 pieces of sushi came, a desert, and a miso soup. Dinner over. My friend and I looked at each other and both had a "thats it?" look. I proceed to talk with the chef and asked him where did he get his ingredients from. He told me some from Taiwan and some from Japan, and he gave me this "you cant tell the difference anyway" look. So my friend and I left the restaurant after we had another bottle of sake, half hungry, and completely disappointed. She said they will not get their stat again based on the quality of their food, but yet again they received their Star for 2020. Maybe we should just stick to our neighborhood sushi place instead.A follow up to my experience: Last week, my friends brother went to this same place and from his description, he had a good time with good food. He told us that the trick is, you have to tell the chef youve been to many places in Japan and tried their sushi there as well. Only then would he actually gave you the good stuff. So theres actually a secret phrase to get good food at this restaurant, live and learn I guess. The reason I gave 2 stars:1. Weird order of dish serving.2. Apparent secret passphrase for getting good food.
Nigiri set menu with some creative Taiwanese flourishes (eg Shaoxing wine with sweet shrimp and liquified Uniin a spacious, comfortable space. Presiding chef is from the once institution Sasa and while his creations here are simple, he blends tastes well and has the occasional surprise.
A bit pricy, but well worth it. Toro and Uni just melt in your mouth! Scallop with mullet roe was just de-li-cious!
amazing omakase dining experience! Totally worth the Michelin star!
Very expensive (or maybe sushi is always expensive)And the place is very hard to find, in some back alley, and I thought the place was closed 😂 but inside is cozy and posh. The chefs are friendly, service was impeccable and I was so stuffed.Food is definitely filling and delicious. Like the sake. The star was the uni and tuna. Must try!
We had dinner set. If you don’t mind the chaos and messiness in terms of slightly buzzing vibe and pace of serving the dishes. Also, chef treats this as a training ground for his staff / protégés so he’s only in charge of nigiris. Basically I would just skip the whole appetizer part and I did not enjoy the rushness at the counter and sudden long pause before nigiri or in-between some dishes.Nigiri made by Chef Yang is still very delicious (just like his Sasa time which I frequented). Just feeling it is a pity that this place — perhaps needs to cope with its Michelin fame — has lost the tranquillity and detailness as a truly outstanding 職人 (craftsmanshipOmakase place should be.
Amazing restaurant!! Authentic cuisine !!
Three stars for the freshness of its ingredients sourced directly from Japan.Minus one star for the lack of variety of sushi even though we ordered a NTD 3k lunch set. I believe 3k is a pretty high price point for lunch set in Taipei in general, but did not feel like the food we ate was worth the hype. We were served 3-4 warm appetizers to start, then 6 nigiris... miso soup, and finished with fruits. That was it.One less star because the entire meal nigiri was not prepared by the master chef himself, rather, our entire nigiri menu was prepared by the sous chef... that was truly disappointing, I couldn’t help but wonder if it was because we ordered the cheapest lunch set.Lunch starts from 3k-5k, and omakase 8k-12k.Would only recommend if you’re prepared to drop over NTD 5k+ for sushi lunch in Taipei.
Food is nice and service is great, very exclusive. Be prepared it is quite expensive
Attentive chef with high quality fresh raw seafood
Made a reservation at noon thru inline. We have waited at the restaurant till 12:15pm, but the restaurant wasn’t open at all.
Just no.
the best sushi places in Taipei
This place is terrible. Save yourself money and avoid at all costs.
Excellent sushi, refined flavors with marinated ingredients and light searing on some fish, each bite is a balanced flavorful delight.
Costly but very good foodLot of choice of seafoodsChief Chef cook for everyoneSmall shop and so need to do reservation firstOnly have beer and sake
A fantastic Omakase meal with unique dishes and flavours.
The worst restaurant in the world. Dont waste your money there. No matter how many times you confirmed your reservation with the same person before the dinner, they will give your table to other people, canceled your reservation while you on your way to the restaurant. They also lied to you the person you confirmed your reservation with for many times (since 2 weeks before your dinnerwas on her first day, so the person I talked to 2 weeks ago was a ghost. Anyway, dont go there because of the star. Go if you enjoy arrogant waiters, and lousy service.
Having lived in Tokyo for 5 years I’ve had my share of Sushi. Sushi Ryu somewhat have imitated the Itamae(板前counter service of Sushi restaurants in Japan. Service wise it need a bit more warmth and enthusiasm. Food wise the material still can not complete with the freshness and variety of what you can get in Japan. There were 2-3 dishes/pieces I did enjoy. But the Omakase (お任せprice we paid for was way above any 1 Star Michelin restaurants I’ve dined at in Japan. All in all if you don’t live or travel to Japan often this is a place you can experience the Japanese way.
Great food! Service is excellent too!
Sushi Ryu lives up to Michelin start in Taipei. And I would said they deserve it. Taipei is packed with chef menu Japanese places with the same pricing... but sushi Ryu they got their own authentic sushi menu that I never had in Taipei. Very creative with ingredients combination, I was amazed by uni with 紹興酒(a Chinese spirit). I won’t say that it cheap, but is worth of money! Many great sake selection, they even got the Juyondai sake! Which is the perfect pairing choice with your sushi!Great service!Must come!
Great sushi restaurant in Taipei
Expensive but of the highest quality. A true sushi master.
Great meal, amazing service, will come again!
Wonderful place for high grade sushi that focuses on the flavor and textures of the fish. A bit tough to get reservations? Try a lunch seating.
My Taiwanese friend had called a few days in advance to make a reservation, but when we arrived at the scheduled time, it was full. Their excuse was that they had called her in the morning and didnt manage to get through to her. So they gave up our seats to other guests, and we actually didnt get to try the food. There was no offer to rebook us on another day, or anything like that -- I guess theyre too popular? We had teppanyaki instead.Anyway, apparently they are very strict about confirming your reservation by phone, so do be aware, especially if you are a tourist.
Excellent
The chef uses seasonal ingredients (different than what I am used to). The service and the food are excellent.
The chef did awesome job bring out the flavor of the food itself. Great taste with high price. I would say it’s well worth it.
One of the very few restaurants which actually lives up to its Michelin Star in Taipei.
Good sushi ya in town
Average
High quality and standard as usual. Visited before they received their Michelin star. One of the highly recommended omakase restaurants in Taipei.
👍🏼💯👏
One of the best in Taipei
It deserves the star-leveled Michelin. The sushi chef strictly chooses the most seasonal seafood and cook with strict & complex treatments. On top of that, he knows how to balance different kinds of favours to meet the requirement of terrific cuisine. As for the attitude of all the servants and assistant chefs, they all complied with chef’s guidance. Once the chef says something out of from his mouth, every staffs would respond with Japanese “Hai” without any hesitation.
