Sundown - Country food restaurant in Montgomery, United States
I have eaten here for decades and always loved their food. Unfortunately, it is under new ownership now. I ate breakfast there a few weeks ago and discovered a couple of days later that they had double charged my debit card. My wife called and spoke with the manager, or owner and was told they couldnt do anything to refund the second charge. She said wed would have to take it up with our bank. IF I ever eat here again, Ill pay with cash only. Beware. The owner responded to my above review and got it wrong. My bill for breakfast was $16. I paid with a debit card and put a $4 tip on it. They charged the $16 and also charged another $20. So my breakfast cost me $36. This restaurant accepted no responsibility for an error which was clearly thiers. How could they not find it?
Great food and decent prices. Friendly service, but not the fastest, so dont go if youre in a hurry. I went with a group, got the Open Face Roast Beef Sandwich the first time, and then the second time most of us got the same thing because it was soooo good! Its a lot of food, so go hungry if youre getting it.
Establishment was not crowded at all. Only 4 tables were seated. Took an extremely long time to have our order taken. Probably 20 minutes. Not exaggerating!! We were actually about to leave. Once we got our food it was good and nice portions for the price. 3 stars for SLOW service!!
Went with a friend to eat and fellowship. The meal was good.
Good was old like left over from lunch.
Had lunch there today, fried chicken, green beans, Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was great. The green beans were inedible and the chicken barely so. Overall, the quality of their food has gone downhill inversely to the increase in price. This is sad since in the past it was a great restaurant. I hope they take heed to this rating and do something to reverse this trend
Service was very quick and staff is friendly and inviting. Food was fresh and piping hot.
To me this is a hidden gem! Food is always delicious. Staff is always helpful and friendly. Let me be the first to say, "you can never go wrong" with this restaurant. From breakfast to dinner, it is always fulfilling! Awesome for morning meetings or get-togethers in their side dinning room. Try it out!!
Has a great breakfast, although sometimes the pancakes are a bit overdone. Unfortunately they recently shortened their hours.
If I could leave 0 stars I would. Were a military family that just PCSd here and wanted to try out some of the cuisine. We sat down at our table at 1220. Our server took our order at 1235 so 15 minutes just to get our order taken which was fine. We proceeded to wait until 140 so over an hour with no update on our food other than our server coming up twice to refill drinks and would just tell us our food was coming up. We decided to ask another server about our food at that point who stated that our food wasnt even put in to their system until 114. After an hour of waiting and hearing that from the server we decided to leave. My wife informed our server we were leaving in a nice calm way and she ended up getting a disrespectful comment from one of the other servers saying we had only been waiting 20 minutes. She was also told that the kitchen put our order on hold which we were never informed of. No communication on that. No concern or care in the world for how long we had been waiting. I can honestly say that in my entire life Ive never experienced the horrible and blatant disrespectful customer service we received nor have ever waited that long. Do not go to this restaurant.
Whats sad is that the food at the tables around us looked good but we never got the chance to try. Our service was horrible and we waited for over an hour before we were told that our order had just now been sent the kitchen. It was clear our server forget to send in our order. Instead of offering an apology the manager argued with us and told us we had only been waiting 20 minutes which was a lie. The staff was extremely rude and we will definitely not be back. Maybe work on your hospitality next time if you want return customers.
So this will be my first negative review I’ve ever given to a restaurant. I used to work in restaurants and I understand the day to day struggles so it has to be REALLY BAD for me to leave a bad review. Well this was REALLY BAD!! We called ahead and asked about the wait. We were told there were a few empty tables so it wouldn’t be bad. We get there and were immediately seated. Awesome. Then it took about 15 minutes for someone to get to us to take our order. Not a big deal. They were pretty busy. But after over an hour we asked about our order (very nicelyonly to find out it hadnt been put in until like 5 minutes earlier. Which was the right after our waitress asked if we needed any more water or sweet tea. She could tell I was aggravated. She forgot to put it in. And if they would’ve just told us that, it would’ve been fine. Mistakes happen. But instead we were lied to and told our order was put on hold. And if it was (which I know that wasn’t the casesomeone should’ve told us. I told the lady that and asked if any of our order would be comped. She looked at me like I had 3 heads and walked away with no response. So we left. My daughter nicely told the waitress we were leaving due to the fact that her dad (which is mehad a medical condition and was starting to feel poorly because he hadn’t eaten. No apology or concern. She only asked “are you sure? Your pork sandwich is up in the window now.” Well no one ordered a pork sandwich. Crazy. Then one of them asked how long we’d been waiting and the girl said with attitude “20 minutes!!” Outright lie. Stay away from this place. We left and went to Zaxby’s. It was great!!
The food was very good and worth the price. The people were friendly and attentive.
We were not from this area and were looking for a family restaurant. I was mislead by the 4.5 rating. Place is a little dumpy, but we didnt need anything fancy. BLTs were average. Fries and Okra were lukewarm. Left pretty disappointed.
Very slow with delivering food to table. Hamburger steak was burnt on one side. Very nice waitress.
They just got new owners and they just got a new menu!! And I’m tickled pink! I’m not sure if people haven’t realized this or what but if your tired of the same ol burger joint or taco hell and need something that’s just a bit different…. Go hear and get the fried green tomato BLT!! You will not regret it because it’s so good!! Now I can’t vouch for how it is eating inside because I’ve always gotten mine to go because I’m always in super big hurry…but the place looks clean enough to where if I had some time to kill I wouldn’t mind dining inside. And when I call to place my order they already know what I want because I get the same thing every time! Its that good! yes! It puts a regular BLT to shame. If you don’t try it your missing out on life!!! I recommend eating it fresh and hot straight from the kitchen because if it sits for even a short period it’ll become somewhat soggy from the grease from the fried breading- and then nope- no good. Eat it hot and fresh and I promise it won’t be your last one!
So friendly and clean, staff is superior, the waitress Toni was excellent and the food was just as we ordered, generous portions.
Very nice staff and a good breakfast. Nice selection of options and very reasonable prices.
One of my go-to places. I try to have dinner there at least once a week, and work in a breakfast when possible.Warm and comfortable environment, friendly staff, and good food at reasonable prices. I recommend the meatloaf, hamburger steak, and the fried fish filets. Sundown is good too when Im in the mood for a cheeseburger. If youre hankering vegetables, theres plenty to choose from between the main menu and the daily specials. Give them a try.
I order food here frequently usually as takeout and it’s always wonderful with a good amount of food for the price. I love the southern home cooking style the ease with which you can order and the prompt service ; the cook is fantastic . I also ate in the restaurant the other day for a breakfast and it was great along with fantastic service ; thank you for showing up for work guys when so many people do not. You do a great job provide wonderful service and the food is great
Food and service was good. Meatloaf was ok not bad just kinda plain. Veggies and cake were great
Food is A plus very good but take out aerbice is bad took too long for fried green tomatoes stayed there more than 25 mins. Name wrong on order took me than 20.mins for orders 3 out of 4 times they forgot I ordered the green tomatoes. It will be a while before I come back again even though food is good takes too long for take out every one else receive orders and left. One time food was ready 15 minutes but because order had wrong name on it I waited that long before they realized they were ad wrong name on order
My family and I tried this restaurant for the first time this weekend. The food was good, but our experience was altered due to poor service as our food was cold and not even what we ordered. Our waitress was not attentive, argued about what was on the menu, and then argued with me about a cinnamon roll she told us 20 minutes prior was almost ready. Well by the time we were done and ready for the check, the cinnamon roll was still not done. Instead of owning her mistake, she made it seem like it was our fault for canceling. So yes, I would try the place again... but you take what you get from the service.
First time going and my last. Only thing that was good was the fried apple pie. Everything else I had get 2 thumbs down👎🏾👎🏾meatloaf sauce was sweet and maybe I got whats was left but my meat was broken all up. macaroni had a lot of cheese but it was dry, gravy on the rice was nasty. Potatoes salad was ok. I think the lemonade was missing the lemons or something.. Really hate I wasted my money.
The service was excellent and the food was fantastic. I love the fact that there is a "meat & 3" for lunch that is so close to the office. If you dont want the lunch special you can order from the regular menu.
First i want to congratulate the owner. During covid-19 apparently the place was painted and added more light. The place went from dark and dingy to light and inviting. The food quality was good in the past, today it was superb. The hamburger steak was perfect. The open roast beef is the best in town. My daughter loved her blueberry pancakes. Our server -Tawni - was perfect- attentive but not overbearing. Played joking with my son which was awesome. Probably the best service my family had in the year.i would rate 10 out of 5
Good food, good service, clean and comfortable atmosphere... Sundown has been one if my favorite neighborhood restaurant/pub for over 35 years. The renovations since new management took over some years back has really improved the overall quality of the entire experience. Daily blue plate lunch specials with fresh veggies, good meat choices, cant be beat, as well as, chicken poppy seed casserole over rice. Without a doubt, they have the best hamburger steak with gravy in town!
I felt the fried catfish was overpriced for what it was. The breading was way dark.like the grease was old. A small.side of coleslaw only .ade you order another side. For 12.99 and one piece and not that good it wasnt worth it. I also was on a tight time frame so the inconvenience of sending it back would.put me.late. Then they forgot to return my credit card and I had to.return back to get it making me late. I feel its the establishments responsibility once you give them your card to return it!
Chicken was good but very thin. Sides were served in very small bowls. Fried okra was burned. The waitress was very nice but a little forgetful. The kitchen staff got my order wrong. It wasnt worth the money they charged. I was somewhat disappointed.
I was in Montgomery for business and was looking for a local spot for breakfast. I found Sundown Family Restraint. Its nestled in a near defunked strip mall, but do not let the location detours you! Upon entry I was greeted warmly and told to sit where ever I like. The waitress came immediately and got my drink orders. I decided on a Ham n Cheese Omelet with Cheese Grits and a Biscuit with Sausage Gravy. This was delivered cooked perfectly in my opinion, my breakfast was a close to homemade as I could get without cooking it myself. Sundown is a local gem so if you find yourself in Montgomery, Alabama wanting a good Ole fashion breakfast you should give this place a try.
Stopped by here for a quick lunch before embarking on a 2hr drive to ATL. The service was warm and welcoming; from the waitress to the two ladies I spoke to behind the counter.I ordered a cheese burger with fries. While this isn’t the best cheese burger I’ve had, it was tasty and a good bargain for the price (hence the 5 stars).
We had a small breakfast after Christmas..The staff was friendly and always on point!!They made sure to get the babies orders first.. the staff was gloved and masked and the customers were social distanced.. the food was really delicious and they gave us fresh baked biscuits after the meal!!MY ONLY CONCERN WAS THE OWNER WASNT WEARING A MASK
I have eaten here for years and the food has always been great , but today I think I had possibly the worst cheeseburger and fries Ive ever eaten. We have ordered their cheeseburgers and fries many times to go. We only live a few blocks away so the fries are always still hot and crispy and the juiciest hamburgers in town. I have often told people Sundown has the best fries in town. However, today we got home, opened the box and there was a Gloppy mess of limp skinny fries in both boxes, that were barely warm and so greasy we couldnt eat them. The hamburgers were devoid of any moisture and like chewing cardboard. I would be embarrassed to give anyone food like this. I called to enquire about the fries and to check to see if a change had been made or if this was a temporary change. I was handed off to a lady (that was not very customer focusedand told the fries have not changed and are the same as always. They DEFINITELY were not the same fries or burgers we have eaten from sundown for years. Hate to say I dont think we will be going back.
The service & atmosphere was great! The food was good, we had breakfast. It was our familys time ever eating here, well be back to try other meals.
This was my first time being at this restaurant. And I must say its an experience u would want.. I ordered the Jack Flapjack Omelet and when I say it was to die for.. my food was hot and fresh.. and for the first time at any restaurant I have visited I didnt have to put salt in my cheese grits. This restaurant is a must visit. If u havent u missing out. Thank you sundown for the tremendous breakfast.
If youre in the Montgomery area dont miss out. BEST hamburger steak ever. Ive been going to Sundown as ling as i can remember. Not a lot of places like this around checkem out
My family and I ate breakfast there Saturday, February 15th, and we all got food poisoning, doctor verified food poisoning. The only foods we had in common were the eggs and grits. We did enjoy the food and service but we will not be returning.
Seriously delicious food, and great service! We were just driving through and decided to stop based on the reviews. We were definitely not disappointed. If they aren’t busy when you get there, don’t take it as a bad sign. I promise it’s tasty!
When we arrived it was very busy and we were told there would be a 10 min wait for food. It’s the first time being here since the remodel and new owners so we decided to wait. We did not have to wait that long. The staff was very friendly. The service was fast and efficient. We all ordered the hamburger steak because that’s what they are famous for. We waited for a while for the food but, they make the hamburger steaks to order and worth the wait. When the food arrived it was just as expected hot and fresh and delicious.
TERRIBLE. Horrific Service. Bland Food. Inaccurate Orders. Lackluster Ambiance. Upcharge on all bills when we were told we could substitute our side with the special (but not told there would be a $2 upcharge for each one). Paid as much for one inaccurate (and tastelessmeal as I pay for a 5 star breakfast in MGM. None of us will return or suggest this restaurant to others...ever. Go elsewhere.Response to Owner: Sept 21 10-11:30. Sat in center area. Two other tables were seated and very unhappy too when we got there. They were both be addressed including returning food. We had three or four waitresses. We expressed our feelings with each waitress. Nothing ever happened. I believe the focus was on the other two tables as multiple people kept coming out to talk with them and apologize, but we werent heard or nothing was done about it. We were all too tired to fight about anything, more than consistently vocalizing our unhappiness, and paid the bill and left. The last waitress was by far the best of the group, but she didnt address our complaints either..granted we didnt have two for very long.
This building has been refreshed and taken over by new owners. Excellent food, good service and cold beer. We love the menu and the very reasonable prices. The fried cauliflower is a great appetizer.
This was such a pleasant surprise that Im giving it 5 stars for improvement since I was last here several years ago. It is now bright and cheerful inside, not dingy. And they now have meat and 2 lunches as well as lunch specials. The food was very good and service was great.
This is a great Southern food restaurant with a meat-and-two option as well as breakfast food (morning onlyand a regular menu with burgers, salads, etc. They have daily specials of main dishes, sides, and desserts, which is great for variety in repeat visits! The service is always quick, but it can be a little crowded at lunch time, so it may be difficult to get in and out within an hour depending on the crowd size. The staff has always been friendly and efficient. The best thing Ive tried so far is their fried chicken! Its a breast cut in half from top-to/bottom to make 2 thinner chicken slices and the batter is DELICIOUS. Wonderfully crunchy, but definitely on the salty side, so be aware if you arent able to have lots of salts. The desserts are made there, I believe, the red velvet cake was great! Ive been three times and havent been disappointed yet. Id definitely recommend it!
New Review: (1.5-2 stars)For the last three trips this place has been on point with great food and service, until today!!!!The restaurant was full, and the kitchen could not come close to keeping up.... To put it mildly, they were so SLOWWWWW!! We were told the food was "1 order away", we watched as 3 or 4 other tables got their meals before we did. When it did get to the table, it was only WARM AND hurriedly slopped on the plate, after waiting for 55 minutes. Todays lunch cost us more than our full meal price, as we lost time at the office. What a shame!!!When the owners wife was told that she might want to get him (the ownerin there for some help, it was met with a very smart and brash "well, Im sorry". That was the first apology and only one we got. Im not certain if we will be back anytime soon.......Previous Review: (2.5 - 3stars)Hit & Miss... This place is great, then good, then less than desirable for lunch and repeat! You never know what you will get when it comes to the quality of the staff. As much as it pains me to say it, they were off! Still nice, but long waits during the lunch hour is not good at all. Most working people that I know have only 1 hour for lunch and anything more than that hour costs them money.Yesterday came very close to costing money, as the drinks and lunch was slow on arriving at the table. Then when it finally arrived the food, the lunch special (Meat and 2 Vegetableswas just okay, which is not Sundowns normal!!In a few weeks, we will give them another go. Consistency delivering good food & drinks, in a timely manner is what its all about!!! Come on now!!Previous Review: (4 stars)What a change from last time! There was a group of four, Sundown was full, but they found us a table. Most of us ordered the Hamburger Steak, but one order the fried porkchop. The service was quick, correct, and very friendly! The Hamburger Steaks with New Potatoes were very good, the only thing is the onions are overcooked, but otherwise it was on point! The porkchops were not fatty and perfectly cooked along with the 2 sides. But most importantly, the food was very hot and came out quickly! To say that we are impressed with the change is an understatement! We will be back next week and Im looking forward to trying the chicken or meatloaf!!Previous Review: (2-3 stars)Been to the NEW Sundown several times since they opened and have had a really good experiences until today. The staff appeared a little off thier "game". I ordered the Hamburger Steak with new potatoes. The order was correct, the food was very hot, but something was missing in the Hamburger Steak (this is normally the best HS in town, but not todayand the new potatoes were tough/hard. So i asked for butter to try and soften them up and received 1 little pad of butter. I had to ask for a drink refill. Plus I had to almost beg for someone to take my $$ to pay the bill....As I said, it was not a great experience today, but the past has always been a lot better. I do mean 5 star kind of good, but today was a low 3, Ill just leave it at a 3 for today. So, Ill try again in a week or two...At least the staff is very friendly!
Wow what a great little find here in Montgomery!!! The service was awesome, the food was awesome and the owners were very friendly. Unfortunately the strip center they are located in does not portray how cute, clean and hospitable this place is. Prices were very reasonable for the quality and portion size. Will definaltly be back next time I am in town.
Newly remodeled due to having new owners and super delicious. The service is spectacular, prices reasonable, and the food is very good. Had the opportunity to try their hot onion rings as a new product and they were spectacular. The menu is your Montgomery rotational meat and three but above average quality. Highly encourage you to revisit this location if you have been away.
This place is in a strip mall and from the outside does not look to impressive. Dont let that detour you. The staff is super friendly and knows the menu very well. The steak tip are fantastic and so is the hamburger steak. ( I prefer no gravybut the cheese they put on it is yummy. Homemade ranch dressing for salad was good too. Cant wait to try breakfast here.
Nice new restaurant Under New Management staff is real nice and friendly is a really good health rating food is real good.
Most important issue - Ignore any reviews from prior to February 2017. The previous owner closed the business in August 2016.Sundown reopened under new ownership (by a loyal former customerin February after a total renovation of the building. The restaurant is extremely clean and updated, the service is excellent, and the menu is full of all your favorites. The hamburger steak is as good as I ever have eaten, and I love the open faced roast beef as well. Try Petes Grilled Chicken Dinner!
My family and I were reminiscing about things we miss from living in Montgomery and this place made the cut!The interior is basic, rustic dive bar with an an amazing kitchen staff. The burgers are HUGE, juicy and priced well. To go orders were always correct and ready in a decent amount of time, even when they had a full house.Nothing fancy, just good, reasonably priced, southern fare and seafood.
