Stuart's Smokehouse & Seafood - Barbecue restaurant in White Sulphur Springs, United States
Nice little no frills place on the river. The food was good. And our little helper (servers daughterdid a great job of seating us.
We had the absolute best crab legs weve ever had in West Virginia. It was a shame more people didnt come out to enjoy those. Our waitress was wonderful, and I just cant think of her name. She wore glasses and had short hair
Stuarts has amazing food. We talked to the owner and he was very nice. Stuart and my husband ended up being from same small town in Virginia.
We waited almost 2 hrs for our food. It was horrible. 2 hrs for oysters and a bake potato with tough steak cut in peices on it. This place is not a good food place at all. It was the same for everyone. We was all waiting for the food. We will never go back.
A pleasant surprise to find good seafood in the hills of WV. Staff was very welcoming and friendly. I will certainly be back and bring my husband, family and friends.
We have been there several years for about two days. The view is amazing and the food is great. We are people willing to have several beers and wait for our food, if you arent then you might get upset, the food takes a good while to come out.
Was a great experience for a out-of-towner,....we came down to West Virginia for family in the area and we found this place, it was great, it over looks the river,....(open West Virginia Mountain Air seating),has a pool table, a bunch of tvs, and when we went there was plenty of room to sit,we will definitely be back next time we are in West Virginia 10 stars for me!Stop on down if your in the area and give these folks a try Im bettin,.... you wont forget it
So much possibility wasted. A small boat of fries was $2 and not worth a dime. Mushy and lukewarm. The fried shrimp batter was burnt hard and tasteless. The crab cake, while smaller than the waitress described, was mostly crab meat and not filler. It’s the only reason that I didn’t give this place one star. Everything was throwaway. Plates, plastic ware, cups. The intercom music clashed. The music played outside on the lower deck was different than the music played on the outside area that was five steps up from it. Even with a live band coming onstage at 6pm, more than half the seats were empty. Total shame because I liked the seating along the river and the ambiance of the place.
I’ll start off by saying the food wasn’t terrible, but our waitress was. She was talking extremely fast and cussing at other staff members. She wasn’t very kind either. I hope this can be addressed. Her shorts were extremely short as well. 7/22/2022
We waited almost 2 hours and never got our food or a refill. They said they were short staffed but there seemed to be plenty of staff running around and several other parties got there food within 30 minutes. We end up leaving hungry along with about 10 other people who also decided they had had enough and walked out as well.
I wish I could rate this lower than one star. This restaurant used to be a place my family and I would frequently visit, but I doubt we will ever return. On our last visit, we decided to bring a family friend from out of town to the restaurant. Several factors during this meal led to us feeling deeply embarrassed for bringing our friend here. Our waitress’s hands were severely dirty, another waitress had a half-smoked cigarette behind her ear, and the bartender reached his hand into a pitcher of beer just before serving it, just to name a few. Just before leaving, our waitress disappeared and even the staff couldn’t find her. Another waitress ended up bringing our check. I have to say, the worst part of the experience was some members of the staff staggering and almost falling multiple times. I’m not sure exactly the cause behind this, but it was not appealing at all. It is my hope that this restaurant is restored to the establishment it once was.
I was disappointed the last last time I ate there a couple weeks ago. The hot dog was not what I expected. It was a let down considering the quality of good in the past.
When we entered into the building. We was not greeted by anyone. No one to be found. Signs telling short staffed and basically if we didnt like it could leave . Couple in front of us has already been standing there for 10 mins , we waited and seen one man literally doing everything himself, still did not greet us, a party of 8 walked in behind us. We finally was told sit anywhere u like. The couple in front of us got up and left as the place was dirty and dusty, waiter did greet us and said would be right back, we a party of 2, we waited 10 more mins, husband looked and the party of 8 was already getting waited on, before us. We got up and left , total time waiting was almost an hour. I get it short staffed but 1 person. Not the guys fault. We was excited to try it as first time. We are accustomed to being treated better then this out. So if u have a lot of time to spare go here. The signs up was very rude and inconsiderate.
My family went to Stuart’s yesterday to celebrate Father’s Day. There were 7 adults and two kids. We were not in a big hurry and were enjoying the company and atmosphere-which was nice. The waitress took our drink and appetizer orders. She later came back to explain that the tea was brewing, and she brought bottled water while we waited. A good while later, she came back and the tea drinkers still did not have their tea. She said she’d spilled all of the drinks and had to brew more tea. (Understandable-things happen). The bar drinks (two beerscame a little quicker. When she brought the appetizers, she apologized for the wait and said the kitchen was slammed, so she had to plate them herself. She then explained about dropping the drinks again and disappeared. At this point, we had been sitting at the table for over an hour and had not even ordered our food. When the waitress returned, she apologized again and said the kitchen was slammed and she was helping cook our food. Someone at the table explained that we didn’t have any food in the kitchen because we hadn’t yet ordered. She said “oh my gosh!” and disappeared again to get sweetener for one of the teas. When she returned, she took our order. At this point, the owner brought our appetizers out again and she explained that we had already had our appetizers.Because it was taking so long, we went to the bar to get our drinks. There, the bartender informed my husband that the system had been down all day and they could only accept cash or we could use our debit card to withdrawal money (with the ATM fee). I only had a credit card and we had no idea that there would be no credit card option. My aunt ordered a shot of fireball, and was given Jack Fire instead (the bartender said this later when the waitress confirmed they were out of Fireball after my aunt questioned it-and he did bring her a free shot). When our food did finally arrive, we were missing all of our sides. My mom never got her crab cake meal and when she mentioned it she was told “oh, you said you didn’t want it”. To be fair, she may have just misunderstood when she brought the wrong dish. When she apologized my mom said “it’s ok”, so maybe she thought she meant that she would just keep the incorrect dish. My husband’s beans were cold-not just cold as if they’d been sitting out, but refrigerated cold. They’d never been warmed. The rest of the food was good.I decided to express my concerns and offer feedback to Stuart, the owner. I explained the frustration with the credit card system and that we should have been informed about the system being down upon being seated. He agreed and said maybe they needed a sign on the door. He did apologize, but never offered to comp any of our food or drinks or offer any kind of solution. There were a lot of excuses made (perhaps even valid ones, but not what a customer cares to hear). We are a pretty patient group and I have never once complained to a manager at a restaurant, but this experience was so terrible it was actually comical. We were there for over 3 1/2 hours. The pros-the atmosphere is fun and unique and our experience with the taste of the food was decent.I would think maybe it was just a really terrible, off day-but the other reviews seem to suggest a more underlying issue. I do hope that service can be vastly improved so that this restaurant can thrive.
Great food. We loved the atmosphere and the owner is a great guy. Our waitress Jill was sweet awesome and on top of everything we needed. We will definitely be going back. The seafood was awesome as well.
I have been a returning customer to this restaurant for almost a decade now. The simplicity of the set up + the exceptional taste of the food = FANTASTIC! The menu is set up for everyone to be able to comprehend and the prices are extremely fair. I suggest the Peel n Eat shrimp - you won’t be disappointed!
My daughter picked up our dinner tonight. I was not impressed. I ordered the smoked combo that comes with 1/2 rack of ribs, pulled pork, and brisket - it was burnt and dry, the rib bones were even burnt. My daughters pulled pork sandwiche was also burnt and dried out. The French fries, fried pickel, and cole slaw (could have been a larger servingwere good. My brownie was nice and moist and my daughters fried cheese cake was good.
Good service and delicious food . We have eaten here several times and its always good
Delicious lunch - staff was honest about longer times to receive food before we ordered. We appreciated the staff addressing the issue. We were happy to relax and wait and the food did not disappoint.
Unusual and funky. Food pretty good. Their motto is great. Warm beer, cold food and ugly women
We waited a very long time to even get a menu we finally got a waitress after about 15 minutes then she got our drinks and disappeared for another 15 minutes she took our order and we waited for around 45 minutes until I finally asked how much longer than it was another 10 minutes before we got our food the waitressesare a hot mess the place was filthy and the bathroom sink and paper towels were on the outside of the bathroom if bar rescue came in and did a complete overall of the place it could be really nice until then do not even both unless you are a bikes
2 hrs to get our food then half of our party was done eating bc it took 30 more min to get the rest of our food server kept laying about everything if you want ice with your tea u better bring a cooler but the owner was pretty good guy
We drove an hour to visit this restaurant, but neither my husband or myself were very happy with it. His oysters were good, and the fried pickles were good, but the brisket was dry and tough, my crab legs were on the cold side, my corn taste like frozen corn that had been in the freezer too long, and also was not warm enough the potatoes they advertised, I did not get. The shrimp was good, the portion sizes were good, but I would not make another hour long trip to visit this place.
The crab was cold and fried shrimp tasted weird.Maybe just a different culture than what I am use to on the coast.I will say it was a great view from the outdoor seating and the service was decent.
I wish I could rate this place zero stars. We shoulda known better from the reviews. But we do like to give these little local places a chance... so, jokes on us this time! Our order consisted of a steam pot, fried shrimp & crab cakes. Lets begin with the pot, shall we! My family ate the crab leg- literally one. The shrimp was cold as could be and gross, the corn was disgusting and freezer burnt, and the potatoes were fried! In a boil! Strange, right! Thankful so, because they were edible.Crab cakes were burnt to a fn crisp! See photo! They might could have been decent if it wasnt for that. Now the fried "shrimp!!!" I cannot remember how many came on the plate, maybe 6-8... they were butterflied. And the absolute worse things Ive ever put in my mouth! I cant even describe them for you! You couldnt even bite em! Thats one in the photo after I tried to find the shrimp with a fork (plastic silverware and paper plates, I may add!). I just dont want to say anymore about the food... it looks like this place is popular for hot dogs so maybe thats what we shouldve ordered. They need to STAY AWAY FROM SEAFOOD. And you need to STAY AWAY FROM HERE IF THATS WHAT YOU WANT TO EAT!When we started our order and asked about the special (all-you-can-eat oysterswe were told the cook would be happy we didnt order those cause they didnt want to cook more! Our waitress was nice and we did tip her well... I cant say she was efficient or entirely alert, but she was kind.Needless to say we paid $60 to eat cereal in our hotel room later! The next day we happened to run into the other family eating near us that night and they had a very similar experience... it wasnt just our taste... its this Godawful food.
That’s a hard NO for me. Wow… just wow.Have you ever seen the series “ Bar Rescue”? This place is a strong candidate for that show. John Taffer goes in to awful establishments and helps to refurbish the dwelling and educate the staff and clean up the owner’s act. Have you EVER had to get up from your table and go talk to the manager/owner about the condition of your food while he sat at HIS table drinking with his friends? I showed the waitress the terrible condition the food came out in cold, black, crab and she went and told him. 2minutes later she came back and said, “ yea, sorry the manager said you still have to pay for it”.I offered to pay for EVERYTHING else, but the grotesque black crab. I was made to get up from my table and go to his hang out spot and talk to him. I showed him the crab and he started to eat it right then and there never even looking up at me, and said ok you can pay for half $14 ….his “friends” didn’t even make eye contact with me. They looked at the ground. It was the strangest, most disgusting feeling i have ever had. He doesn’t care about anybody or at least not me as a person who had been planning this trip for months. Btw, i am not a food critic,i am a single mom , who very rarely gets to spend money like this. Clean your act up
Food was great! Service excellent
We went here with high hopes. Drove over 1 1/2 hrs for my birthday dinner. Let me start by saying my boyfriend liked his food. We were told they didnt have Brisket, Bone In Chicken Wings or Crab Dip. He thought the pulled pork was good along with the French fries. Portion size was good. I however was disappointed in my meal. I ordered a steam pot with Crab legs and shrimp. It was to come with potatoes and corn. The Crab legs were good. The shrimp over cooked. The potatoes were not the usual boiled salt potato or little round potatoes but deep fried chunks of potato. This for me was disappointing. We did order dessert which was listed as Deep Fried Cheesecake. Presentation was good but when we cut into it, it had a brown colored cream which when we asked about it, we were told it was some type of banana filling. They said they werent sure because they are bought that way frozen. I have 2 suggestions. The 1st - Use salt potatoes or little round potatoes in your steam pots and either replace the deep fried cheesecake with real cheesecake, or let people know its not just cheesecake. The river in the back was nice to watch and there are railroad tracks which we happen to watch a train go by.
We got cheese shrimp and thought maybe it would be cheddar or something and it was spicy cheese and not that great. I wasn’t asked how I wanted my burger cooked and my bacon was super floppy. Both our waitress and bar tender decided they both needed a smoke break while we were eating and weren’t very friendly and I think super unprofessional
Is this really just a BAR, I think so. On a whole the food is on the poor side, cheaply put together and over priced. This is typical of how it works at a bar, their primary business is in selling alcohol, which is extremely profitable and they see their food in the same light, extremely profitable. When I see beer batter, which is common now a days, nevertheless its always a bad sign. At certain times they will have special entrees which may be worth the trip , I would call first. They have loyal clients who apparently keep this place alive. My complaint is they are billing themselves as something they are not or at least not real good at (all the time).
The food is a good. You dont expect great seafood on the Greenbrier River but there it is... Something for everyone
This place was very surprising. Its not often that you find a legit, quality seafood/BBQ place in the middle of nowhere WV. But Stuarts is exactly that. The Calabash Shrimp special and the oysters were excellent. The service was very good. I will definitely be stopping here again when Im in the area.
Such a cool place. Great atmosphere and great food! Will be coming back for oysters! Abby was amazing!
Had a good pulled pork sandwich, just a little dry, but good flavor. Friendly service, but short staffed like all restaurants are right now. Prices were reasonable. Would go back when Im back in town.
Its just okay. Service was nice. Atmosphere was good. Loved sitting and seeing the river and having a beer. The seafood however was typical WV seafood. I grew up on the Eastern shore. I had fried oysters. They were okay. Not a ton of flavor and soggy by the time I was done. My kids had the crab cakes and they were so much breading my kids asked what they were supposed to be. They are 4 and 6 but they are used to mommys home made crab cakes which is typically all backfin. Little filler. My husband has steamed shrimp. He said they were good. The waitress was super nice. Up your seafood game and this place would be on point.
Dani is the best waitress by far! So sweet and hard working so make sure to give her a big tip! The food is a little expensive but it’s worth it. It tastes so fresh and delicious my family and I couldn’t help ourselves and left stuffed like pigs.
The food took a while to come out but it was so worth it! All the food was delicious! Our waitress was Danni and she was the sweetest! She made sure we had all we needed constantly! She even gave my grandkids quarters out of her own pocket to play pool while they waited for food to come! You need more of Danni!! We will be back.
What a hidden gem. Food was amazing and very reasonably priced. Will definitely be back!
This place is amazing its a must do on your to-do list.. food was amazing melted rite in my mouth, I had brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and deep fried cheesecake 😋👌.. amazing definitely worth the drive.. ENJOY!!
Not sure what the problem is now. But the last couple times that we have visited this facility the all around Experience has sucked to say the least. Last night my wife and arrived at 8 looking forward to the all you can eat oysters, waitress came promptly we ordered our food and a couple beers. 20 min later beers arrived. I know it was busy because there was like 6 people in the restaurant and 4 of them were at our table. LOL soon I ordered a couple more beers and watched bartender drop lime on bar and then put lime in bottle. Yea! Told waitress no that’s not coming to my table! 5 minutes later bartender is acting like a 2 year old throwing stuff across bar and screaming! Food finally came at 9!!! I ordered another order of oysters and was told kitchen is closed! What?? But was still expected to pay for 20 dollar special! It didn’t happen, but really we have loved this place for years always had good experiences! So disappointed!!!
Excellent food. Staff were very friendly and accommodating for our HOG Chapter. We will definitely be back again soon.
Always great food, and great service!! Sooooo worth the drive!! Cant wait for the deck to reopen.
Hidden gem. Friendly staff good service. The shrimp and crab legs were good. It kinda took some time to get the food but it was worth it. Its got a good local atmosphere nice views outside. Considering WV the seafood tasted fresh.
We saw a larger seafood platter on Stuarts Smokehouse and Seafood FB Page and fell in love with it. Stuarts Seafood Platter exceeded all expectations on beautiful and very delicious. Everything was cooked perfect. 😲 The sweetest corn ever. The staff did an excellent job on the food and service. Always great to chat with Stuart too. Everyone had a great time and we made new friends. Thank yall so much for a very lovely Sunday.
On a unplanned trip thru the area we came across your hidden gem tucked away were you would least expect it! You people knocked it out of the park! The shrimp ,wonderful the oysters melted like butter in your mouth, the dill in the crab cakes absolutely delish! Thankyou to all involved in preparing, serving and procuring my wonderful treat!!!😋😍🤗
View was great. Outside seating was safe. BarBQ was dry, tasted like yesterdays leftovers. Oysters were good. Waitress was friendly but could not concentrate or remember anything. Pricey for the quality.
My husband and I got married at Stuarts six years ago and we came back on the 4th of July 2019 to celebrate. The food was as great as I remembered... And hats off to the wonderful lady who took care of us, Ebony. She is so delightful and phenomenally good at her job...she made our return trip to Stuarts the best ever!
Was told this place was wonderful and it was by far the worst service I have ever received in my life. We ordered 4 lbs of King Crab legs and only received 3. Two of the legs were meatless and was told they would comp me with a few more so I still ordered another pound on top of that and waited another hour and still received nothing. I showed up here at 5:30 and didnt leave til 8:30pm and over half the time we were here was nothing but wait time. Our server Bailey was new but still was not very good with service and we had to ask for refills and when they came, there was no ice for drinks and their excuse was that they were busy!! Everywhere gets busy!! You should be better prepared for events like this. Lakin asked what she could do to make it right and I shouldnt have to ask to be comped for crab legs that had no meat in them when Im paying $30 a lb. which was only 3 legs. Jill tried helping us by running to us in the parking lot and wasnt even working at the time and spoke to the owner and his reply was they were busy as well as understaffed!!! Nor did he come to talk to me!!! Where is that my problem or my fault?? My bill was $109 and thats all he can say? The sign outside is disrespectful and chauvinistic and I will never again drive from beckley to eat at this sorry place. Could of had a better meal at a hotdogs stand for $7. Thanks Stuart but No Thanks and I appreciate you running your establishment like a greenhorn and making excuses for your responsibilities!!!
Whats so great about Stewarts? Sweet service, funloving ownership, fantastic smoked meats (wow tender brisket!), great beer, cheap kids plate, occasional train spotting, and be-you-tee-full Greenbrier River-side location!
Dont know why anyone would complain about serving size or cost or service. We loved this place and definitely plan on going back. And as you can see, we couldnt eat it all. Didnt think to take before pictures. Menu is easy to read and I like the whole dollar amounts ( not $7.99 like most places$8 . Nice!!!!!
