Guided tours of restored WWI aerodrome housing original remains of RAF operations buildings.
Interesting visit enhanced by a well-informed guide. We had two young children (4 and 3with us and they enjoyed the ride-on toy planes and the morse code machine, as well as seeing the old aircraft.
A real deep dive into highly specific local WWI history. Very friendly staff, nice shop. Highly recommended for the history buff.
Really great place local and flying days a must go to
Nice to see this WW1 aerodrome starting to be preserved as it should be. So much gets built on these days, it’s important to keep our History. It was great to see a few of the planes that were used in WW1 but what made it special was the genuine passion that the tour guides held for the place and it’s history, in particular Gordon, who described and brought to life some of the events of the past.Nice little tea room to relax in after the tour. Glad we went, many thanks and keep up the great work.
Very interesting place. All the volunteers are really friendly & very knowledgeable. Well worth a visit
An excellent day out with1st Writtle Brownies. This is a gem of a place that is expertly run by numerous volunteers. Such a story behind the airfields use in the Great War and its recent renovation. Great cafe also. Well done to all involved.
Nice location, good day out.
Went to see a model aircraft event. What a wonderful place! Friendly staff, amazing exhibits, all tucked away in a beautiful location in the middle of Essex. Hard to find, even harder to leave!
A interesting place to visit, buildings from the first war listed 2, being rebuilt to the same standards by the volunteers, they have interesting weekends during the year well worth supporting.
Fantastic place to spend a few hours. Really knowledgeable guides are on hand to show you around the place or just walk around and look at the exhibits and displays. Dont forget the mess for delicious food and drinks!
Went for large model rc plane show very good and interesting on again sep 17th.
A great place to visit for anyone young or old who are interested in Aviation especially First World War. All of the volunteers are so enthusiastic about the place and passing information onto those who are interested. I was fortunate to fly in for their " a time for Essex " and enjoyed the day immensely.
Somewhat difficult to locate but once there fantastic insight into the life of the men and women who served in the Great War. As the only remaining world war 1 aerodrome dating back over 100 years it’s well worth a visit. The volunteer staff and guides are also excellent and very knowledgeable. Like going back in time.
The staff are so helpful but the planes are the real stars. Also a museum to look at as well. Loved it
Wonderful place with a great display giving the history of stow Maries great war airfield. I would try and go on a day that has a display for more entertainment
Really interesting place to visit, great food in the mess and great enthusiact guides.
This is a hidden gem of a museum. Really well constructed and interesting displays. Surpassed my expectations. Nice ambiance about the place. Good parking.
Excellent place to visit. There are so many old planes, vehicles and displays. We saw biplane frying in the air. Many knowledgeable volunteers were willing to help and special thanks to Res who gave us really valuable information which made the place more interesting. Lovely cafe serves tiptree cakes. Nice reception area with gift shop. We highly recommend this hidden gem.
Cost £9 to get in.an old 1st world war airfield .a must if you love history.you also get access to 2 hangers one of has old 1st world war aircraft.has a cafe which is reasonably priced and a souvenir shop.great half day out.they also do airshows throughout the year.
A gem of a museum, a Hidden gem , it is the only world war 1 airfield that is still an active airfield, in the world (as far as I know).the exhibits are interactive, fun and very educational, most of the buildings have been sympathetically restored you could almost be in 1914, I cant praise this museum enough.great job guys its outstanding.
Found it quite difficult to find this place so give yourself plenty of time. It was well worth the effort thought if you like old biplanes. It was wonderful to see them in the air and displaying their manoeuvres. Also there is a great cafe with delicious cakes and more.
Great to see some working history, and my kids enjoyed getting in and pretending to fly planes.
Great little museum, picked as a random destination for a motorcycle ride and really glad I did. You can really get a feel for what the place must have been like during those operational periods guarding London against the zeppelin terror. Had a tour from David who was really nice and dead enthusiastic. Looking forward to going back during armed forces day
Great airfield and an absolute historical treasure. Lots to see and some really interesting WWI displays all housed within various sympathetically restored WWI buildings. Lovely little cafe with tasty homemade cakes. Very friendly atmosphere. Will fly in to visit again soon!
I really enjoyed my visit and found it very interesting. The people working there where very good. They passed on loads of information and answered all my questions. Found it a great place to visit
Great day out . Lots to read and see . Take a tour with Peter who is so knowledgeable and friendly. Coffee and cake in The Mess. Live camera of the barn owl on its eggs and jackdaw with its chicks . Can be viewed on there website. Friendly man giving us information on the birds . Watched planes taking off. Well worth a visit
What a fantastic place, like being in the war. The Staff were very helpful and friendly, and the Lady in the Restaurant,Jackie, makes Cake 🍰 that is delicious (Her Bread Pudding is really goodand its hard to just eat one piece. I would recommend it for a visit
Excellent place to visit for shows planes, and history by knowledgeable guides. Lots of wildlife and a woodland walk. All for a reasonable price. Or even better park for free and ask for a pink wrist band in the shop and visit the cafe for delicious food
Great visit. Lots of exhibits and information on WW1 action etc. Very knowledgeable and friendly volunteer guides. Brilliant Sunday Lunch in the Mess!
1st visit got lucky, saw replica biplane take off and witnessed infantry reenactment. Definitely come again.
A very nice place to visit. Historic, educational, lots of information and helpful volunteers!
Great museum about the Royal Flying Corp from the only original WW1 airfield that defended London from airship and bomber attacks. Lots to see and lots of history.. Expect to spend at least 4 hours here on a non- airshow day. If you are lucky there may be some private light aircraft flying in. Open only Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at time of writing - Aug 21.
Amazing day out, volunteer staff so knowledgeable and passionate too. Highly recommend. Great shop and second hand bookshop also on site along with cafe. Covid safe too. Thank you all
A really interesting step back in time to the early days of military flying. So many fascinating exhibitions manned by such friendly and informative guides. The mess is great too for a delicious snack at the end of your visit.
A fascinating collection of buildings surving from the Great War now housing a lovely little museum, with more displays and information than the last time I visted . Run by helpful and knowledgeable volunteers on site. The tea and homemade cake was delicious too.
This place has so much history and culture and well worth visiting
Brilliant example of WW1 airfield. Very well preserved exhibits and informative friendly staff
Aeronautical history at its best. Best guided tour ever. Must see.
Went here for the Schools UKRoC, certainly a step back in time, the huts, the hanger all housing old items from wars and flying. Looks like theyre doing some refurbishing to old derelict buildings and this could add to the flavour. Not quite enough for a full day, but certainly enough for those that might be interested.
The last surviving World War One aerodrome of the Royal Flying Corps, now a museum that puts on regular air displays. If youre thinking about paying a visit I cant recommend it highly enough!
Had a great time at the Aerodrome! It’s very informative with a lot to see, they have guided tours of the Aerodrome which are well worth attending! The gent who ran ours was very well knowledgeable and captivating!Beautiful tribute to our fallen!Lest we forget.
Wonderful place to visit. Great value plus you can access a free volunteer guided tour explaining everything you need to know about what happened whilst this Royal Flying Corp aerodrome was in operation and after. Thoroughly recommended.
Really enjoyed our day here. The volunteers were amazing and knowledgeable especially Les. The cafe was very reasonably priced also
A great WW1 Aerodrome staffed by volunteers. We came for an air show, but stayed to see the museum. Would make sure I visit the cafe next time because I saw a lovely selection of Tiptree cake boxes outside - sadly all empty.
Was an enjoyable day. The air show we saw was fab and the enactment group were brilliant. Was a little hard to find and parking was very bumpy
Great place for a day out wonderful friendly staff and very interesting exhibitions
This museum is the oldest authentic WW1 aerodrome in the UK. It costs £8 admission for an adult and for that you can join a regular guided tour for free. For an extra £4 you can attend a talk. I went to an interesting talk about WW1 attacks on the UK. The museum has a collection of buildings and hangars some of which are open and some which arent. The officers mess contains a cafe and its great value for money. For me, its an interesting museum but could do more if it received more visitors and got more income. Its also in the middle of nowhere and doesnt get the publicity Duxford, Hendon and the science museum do. Its a shame as Stow Maries has great potential.
Great place to visit. They are restoring the old WWI buildings, and the ones they have done up look really good. Lots of nice displays and a really well presented, clean museum. The tour is free and well worth going on, you get to know all the buildings and history of the place. The tour also takes you to see the airplanes (all replicas from films). Staff are really nice. Food at the cafeteria is amazing too, go for the bacon rolls! The narrow concrete track on the way in has only a few passing places, so take it slow and easy. Parking is ample, its on grass so check weather first. Great place
Great hidden gem. So pleased when we found this place. Great staff, excellent exhibits and very authentic mess hall complete with piano. The ladies run a nice little cafe selling homemade cakes. Thoughtful museum bringing to life realities of early air warfare and all the people it effected. The memorial is set in the middle of a large open field, the "few" who protected us from Zeppelin raids over such a huge expanse of sky in machines constructed from wood & cloth. Thats bravery. One leg Man.
Lovely little airfield with loads of information and plenty to look at. Great for kids too. Onsite cafe, plenty of parking and lovely staff. The free tour is a must. Thank you.
