Stirling Point in Invercargill

It was a blustery wind on the day, beautiful clear skies, great to tick it off your bucket 🪣 list in retirement.

Stunning views. A must do if you visit South island. We did a little walk to get to the light house. There is public toilet on site.

Took Whanau from Gizzy up Bluff Hill for a STUNNING view of Stewart Island on a clear day!!! Only disappointment was NO Bluff oysters were available but, Imvercargill had plenty of Mutton birds!!!

Great stop ! Have not been there for years

Food was OK. Seafood chowder was bland. Wedges were run of the mill. . Blue cod meal was very tasty.

Claimed to be the most southerly mainland point in New Zealand. Slope Point (The Catlins areais the most southern point on the mainland nearest the South Pole.It is also notable as the southern end of State Highway 1. Just follow State Highway 1, keep going south and when it stops, youre at Stirling Point.If you have visited the top half of the North Island, the Cape Reinga Lighthouse is located right at the tip of the North Island of New Zealand. It is one of the first lights that shipping observes when arriving from the Tasman Sea and North Pacific Ocean. Stirling Point is its equivalent for the South Island.Here at Stirling Point it is famous for its signpost, depicting distances to major cities in the world. This signpost has featured in thousands of photographs with tourists from all around the world.The Point is named after Captain William Stirling, who established a whaling station here in 1836.Theres a café at Stirling Point, which serves NZ world famous oysters, that are havested from this area. Bluff oysters are reputed to be the best in the world and is a New Zealand national treasure.The Italian playboy Casanova consumed 50 oysters for breakfast every day to heighten his libido first thing in the morning, and due to his numerous sexual conquests, is largely responsible for oysters being perceived a potent aphrodisiac.It is here that you can access beautiful Department of Conservation walk tracks Foveaux Walkway: Stirling Point to Lookout Point 60 minutes one way. The coastal track from Stirling Point to Lookout Point has an easy grade and well-compacted surface providing good views across Foveaux Strait.On a clear day you can see Stewart Island which is New Zealands third largest island, situated 30 kilometres south of the South Island, across the Foveaux Strait.

The start of SH1. It can be a busy place and not really enough car parks at times. Wheelchair accessible toilets just past the big chain.

A lovely walk with a lot of history, too. Im so glad that youre allowed to take dogs on most of the tracks. They had a blast!

Good spot for a photo, with a distant view of Stuart Island out the back.The toilets nearby were good.Worth a visit to say you’ve been there.

Stirling point is a beautiful little area to hike or take a walk along the beach. Lots of cute little shells to be picked over. The lighthouse down the way is quite picturesque

It was fantastic saw all the fishing boats coming in and very large aluminum ship coming in, it feels like you could reach out and touch them,good oyster restaurant

Always a destination to go to when you are in Invercargill to reach the bottom of Bluff, been here thrice now, will definitely see you again.

At Bluff, the bottom of the South Island, view Foveaux Straight ( see Stewart Island from the lookout). We went there on a gorgeous April day.

Have always visited Stirling point with visitors since my mum took me there as a child.This time we walked to the light house. Lovely walk along the safe track and interesting history displayed. Everyone enjoy the day out, of course with a feed of fresh oysters and blue cod.

Super popular photo place! Its amazing that even with NZ so quiet, there were constantly people coming and going for the 90 minutes or so we watched from the Oyster Cove restaurant nearby.Dont expect much to do here, mostly its a place to take pictures with the famous signpost. You can also walk to the nearby lighthouse in 5 minutes or so, and stop by a small beach on the way. Still, its one of those things thats fun to do partly to say youve done it (and get the selfies to prove it!).

Fab walk around the point among the trees with clear views of the outlying islands. Big flash cafe there for city folk. A step back in time to the 1800s whaling stations

Forty years after my first trip to Cape Reinga i finally made it to Stirling point, at the other end of the country. An equally rugged and exposed part of the world!

This is where the State Highway 1 ends in Southern most City of Bluff in New Zealand.This is very close to being the Southern most part of South Island. That honor belongs to relatively less known Slope Point.There is a famous signpost that gives you distances from Antarctica and Equator.People queue up to take their pictures here. So, on a busy day, you may jave to wait your turn.This plac is named after Captain William Stirling who set up the earliest Whaling Stations here.For the fit and adventurous, there is the 2 hr Foveaux walk. For the food buffs, there is Oyster Cove just across.

Stirling Point in Bluff. Popular spot for photos and nice views at the bottom of the South Island. There is a toilet and a cafe/restaurant by the car park. You can also walk from here to Bluff Hill via the tracks through the bush, if you dont want to drive there. Only 30 mins from Invercargill

A popular landmark for a good reason! People wait for their turns to have that “mandatory” photo of the iconic signpost with multiple directional signs. 😅

A must to do in Southern Island with incredible views. Easy access and just 1 min walk from car park. It is a landmark at the southern end of the New Zealand.

Must do place when in Southland. Pleasant walk along to the point. Possibly see seals and dolphin. Interesting lighthouse and history of local area

Nice viewpoint..walkway to lighthouse. On a sunny, calm day, as we had, it was very pleasant.

One of the most southern points I have visited in my long travelling carrier as a Navigator.Lovely

Southern most point of the South Island. Just a few mins drive from all the shops in Bluff.Plenty of parking. Nice glass fenced viewing area so you can see the waves crashing against the rocks.Safe enough for my 1.5 year old to run around without us having to worry about him falling into the water.No steps and all concrete so it’s stroller and wheel chair friendly.You’ll also see the famous yellow sign/marker highlighting all the famous cities and their distance.Toilets onsite.Amazing restaurant on the hill next to car park that has the most incredible views.All in all, no trip to Invercargill is complete without visiting Stirling Point.

Fun spot to pose for that must have photo. Do take a stroll down to the lighthouse.

One of two points every kiwi needs to visit at least once. Have already been to Cape Reinga, so its been a long time coming to finally get to Stirling Point. If youre there in May go up to the cafe and try the worlds best oysters

This is a must visit place when you are on the Southern end of the South island!It has really great ocean views and cliff side walking trails.It is famous for the yellow sign with multiple distance markers, and is a popular place for tourist photos.It is also famous for the sculpture of the “anchor chain” that goes into the ocean that “anchors” the South Island.Adjacent to the parking area is a restaurant that is famous for its fresh out of the water Bluff Oysters that you must try! A trip to the South Island would not be complete without some world famous oysters!

Driven straight to Bluff from ChCh! Long day but worth it! Amazing scenic drive. The most Southern Point of New Zealand. The light house is also stunning. It also have a nice bush walks around its area!

(Jan 2020)Second most photographed sign post in NZ. People thinks it is the Southern point but that is incorrect, that would be Slope Point. Do not feel bad if you do not visit it. There is not much to see anyway. You can literally drive here.

Maybe the most photographed sign post in NZ. It’s not the most southern point though, that would be Slope Point. There’s a walk you can do around the coast. Also you can drive up to the lookout, but not much else here. Don’t feel bad if you skip this place.

What a place! The walkway is well planned. The lighthouse is stunning. The landscape is breathtaking! Put it on your itinerary.

You can go on a 1.5h loop walk to the top of the hill and return along the coast. What I liked about this area the most is all the wildlife. I saw some swimming seals, nesting shags and albatrosses. You need to go on the coastal walk for that though and make sure you pay attention. The mega seaweed is pretty impressive, too.

The best oysters I had in a long time. The food at this restaurant was well presented and delicious. The staff was super friendly and we went for a walk afterwards, it was beautiful

A very beautiful little spot to visit, if youve been up to Cape reinga its the same kind of sign and it marks the other end of the Great walk through the two islands.

People might say its not worth a stop, I would say just go if you want to. Its a peaceful place to hang out for a while and just enjoy the view to the ocean. Beautiful scenery and some trails that you can do close by.

Iconic place with a fine dining cafe and couple of walkways. Only one toilet is available and parking spots are limited. Good view allover.

Southern most point of Southland area as well as New Zealand 🇳🇿. Apart from that it’s the end of the highway no 1.Along scenic and serene beauty this place will definitely take your breath away.A small platform erected in the place for observer and a notification board shows the distance to certain places from the stirling point.

The start of the beginning. State Highway one starts here. It is not the most southerly place. In the South Island. That is in the Catlains.However it is an icon and worth the drive south.The car park must get full in peak times so plan ahead in summer or walk over the hill track from Bluff.Restaurant up the hill open for coffee lunch and dinner. Tracks to follow and bird and sea life. Saw an Orca.

Very nice view, has some good restaurants nearby. Has access to a stunning and easy walk. My only wish is to have more parking space, but other than that its the perfect place to be on a good day. Whether youre by yourself or with family and friends you can be certain of having a good day.

This is essentially and "End of the Road" stop and look out, with the famous sign-posts that all tourists to Bluff will stop and grab a pic. The outlook is beautiful and there are lots of car parking bays around, however, this is the end of the road and there are vehicles turning. I noticed some kids running across the end of the road when a ute was backing out. Its a nice photo- stop.

Breathtaking! Must visit tourist hot spot, best seen on a clear / partly cloudy day. Short walk down the cliff is opportunity to see sea smoothed rocks and touch upon the Pacific with your toes. There are a few short and long walks along the coast and up the hill too, depending on time, make a decison to do at least one.
