Statue of Grand Duke Gediminas - Sculpture in Vilnius, Lithuania
Good spot for photo
Cook statue, very grand and is one of the many attractions to see in the square.
A beautiful bronze sculpture of Grand Duke Gediminas standing in front a horse, facing the Cathedral Bell Tower. He holds a sword in his left hand and blesses the city with his right hand. The statue depicts his diplomatic nature.
it’s a monument next to the cathedral
Just a monument that you must be prepared if you want to understand the meaning of it
Can anything explain to me why he is standing in front of his horse? How is he supposed to protect the city? Did he just give up in advance? One of the funniest sculptures in Europe
no vibes. not nice
Grand Duke Gediminas is considered as the founder of the city of Vilnius. The monument is located in front of the Royal Palace and Cathedral Basilica in the very downtown of Vilnius. During the time of Gediminas, people of different ethnicities and confessions began to live in Vilnius. He is the founder of the Gediminian - Jagelonian ruling dynasty of Lithuania and later of Poland as well (till 1572)
Nice place for skating.
Love this place!
Very powerful and large statue in the main city square! Great at night when spotlights up light the angles and features of the statue itself.
a very good meeting place in vilnius, easy to find :)
Heritage of Dukes time
Uninspired, and uninspiring, to be honest. The whole square has a bad vibe, everything seems to be off for some reason, this statue does very little to lift up the spirit of the place
The Lithuanian people are a very proud nation. Their origin story involves wolves, humen sacrifice, brave knights and shamans. They are not your average boring Christian with their nice and tidy origin story about how some priest started their nation by giving them christ, oh no. These people are pagans who fought long and hard against those holier-than-thou bishops. The statues in the compound are not very pretty, but the stories are awesome.
#gediminas is the founder of #trakai and #vilnius and the ruler of ancient #lithuania . Gediminas lived from 1275 to 1341, and ruled the Grand Duchy of Lithuania for 25 years. He has also moved from Trakai to Vilnius. He is also famous as a diplomat who drew the attention of Europe. The name of Vilnius was said to be a letter that Gediminas gave to Western Europe in 1323, and the year of sending the letter, 1323, is said to be the founding year of Vilnius. And around his statue, a young man is still courageous lol
Perfect view, beautiful square
This square has the most beautiful atmosphere in Vilnius
Looks epic. You should definitely see this monument for yourself. Photos definitely arent enough.
Dope, but please bring back lightsaber
Beautiful place to watch the sunset of Riga in summer. Very crowded by locals and tourists.
Historical monument of Vilnius, it is a must to visir here with a cup of coffee or an icetea if the weather allows you. From this point you can start your journey to any part of town.
Nice place
Nice place to start your visit to the city. From there you can join a free walking tour or learn about the whole city history.
Great for pictures
Everything was fine. Good place to hide from rain if you are visiting Vilnius and it is rainy day.
The monument itself is not impressive at all, compared to the historical significance. In short: He joined a lot of kingdoms into Lithuanian kingdom and expanded the borders massively. Made Vilnius the capital.
Temporarily giving him a lightsaber was an amazing idea.
Statue of legend
Its not gengis kahn
Very prominent monument to Vilnius founder, and tough to miss. The surrounding courtyard is always bustling with activities, from groups of school kids to performers of all sorts.
You can look at Vilnius old town from above! And its for free!
A must see
King must be on horse, not next to it
Very interesting place as part of Lituva history.
My great salutations to the creator of this city Vilnius whose name is the Grand Duke Gediminas.
Easy to find and a good place to meet each other. Apart from that it is a statue, nothing special at all
Great monument to the grand duke Gediminas in Cathedral square.
You must visit this place
Not so much to see
Love this place!
Nice modernistic monument and a popular meeting place for visitors and locals alike. For the younger crowd, it seems to be a popular spot for skateboarding (which can be annoying to other people, hence the four star rating).
History of Lithuania and Vilnius
Monument to Grand Duke Gediminas.
In equestrian statues, the man as a rule is mounted on the horse. Here, the ancient Lithuanian king is leading the horse.
if you are visiting Vilnius, you will most definitely see it
as a tourist a must have, great photo location :)
