State Historical Museum in MoscowVisited on 5/10/2019The State Historical Museum of Russia has an imposing red façade located between Red Square and Manege Square in Moscow. It is a museum of Russian history. Its exhibits range from relics of prehistoric times to priceless artworks acquired by members of the Romanov dynasty.Due to very tight tour schedule, it is a pity our itinerary does not include the visiting of the museum.

Everything in the museum was good and well-presented. Huge in size with many artifacts and beautiful ambiences. Except that the translation of texts in English wasn’t across the whole museum which made it a bit of a challenge.

The State Historical Museum (GIMis the largest national historical museum in Russia. Founded in 1872, the building on Red Square in Moscow was built in 1875-1883 by the architect Vladimir Sherwood and engineer Anatoly Semyonov. The site for construction was provided by the Moscow City Duma, ordering to demolish the building of the Main Pharmacy that stood there. The fund of the modern State Historical Museum has more than 5 million items and 14 million sheets of documentary materials. The permanent exhibition in the building on Red Square contains only 0.5% of the total collection. The number of visitors to the museum annually exceeds 1.2 million people. The staff is more than 800 employees.Currently, the museum association includes the Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed, the Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Romanov Chambers. The State Historical Museum also owns exhibition halls on Revolution Square, storage facilities and restoration workshops in Izmailovo. The construction of a depository and exhibition center with an area of 120 thousand square meters is underway in the village of Kommunarka, New Moscow. Since 1990 it has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the Red Square ensemble.

Excellent historical Museum where you are going to find artifacts seven thousand years old and they all were found at the territory of modern Russian Federation. This is "must see place" in Moscow. Visitors are allowed to take non commercial photo without flash light and tripod.

Highly recommend to visit if you are aware of pre historic cultures like Catacomb, Abashevo, Sintashta and Andronovo. It has outstanding collection from Iranian People like Scythians and Sarmatians. You can follow the traces of these Iranian Cultures in Hun/Hungarian artifacts in this Museum too. About labels of the items, partially are bilingual in Russian and English. Using audio guide is recommended. It is so advanced and helpful.

Very cool museum! Certainly get the audio guide if you aren’t fluent in Russian. The rooms all have themes and it would have been better knowing that early on.Some of the doors you go through are not well marked that they are indeed okay to go through. And only about half of the descriptors are written in English and Russian. The displays are beautiful. And well planned out. Wonderful museum! I went in the morning and besides a few other guests was mostly alone. Although, on the weekends there seems to be a line down the block! So be early as to skip any lines.

I really appreciate this museum. The same build is an historical piece of art, check my photos to understand what I mean. Then a lot of objects are well grouped and disposed along the put. Guide are well prepared and can tell you a lot about the exposition. We were there with the school and we had an organized visit with masked guides. Really nice!

Awesome museum! Tells Russian history since the first humans that lived in what is today’s Russia all the way until the 19th century. Very, very rich in terms of objects, pictures and artifacts in general. Must go. However pretty much the entire museum has explanations only in Russian, so if you’re not a fluent speaker of the language the audio guide is necessary otherwise it’ll be a waste of time and money. And the audio guide is just awesome, the best I’ve ever gotten in any museum. It speaks in a very easy and pleasant manner and instead of inputs for selected objects it has one input for each hall of the museum so it kind of explains the entire hall, pinpointing the highlights. I listened to it all!P.S. the audioguide can take 2 pairs of earphones. So you can get only one for you and your partner;)P.S.2 Entrance is RUB 500; audioguide RUB 400 + RUB 1000 deposit which is given back once you return the device (ONLY CASH)

Another museum who doesnt care about English descriptions of the incredible collection of objects. Here at least there are audioguides who allow to focus on a small part of the exposition. The staff is very unkind: thats something common to all other public structures of this huge capital (airports, train stations and so on).

The only reason I give a star is because of its exhibitions, which are very interesting, only if you are a Russian speaker. There is almost no information in other language than Russian in the entire museum. Moreover, they dont recognize student ID except from ISIC cards, which I think it is a business. Disgraceful!

One of the coolest museums Ive ever visited. From several millions of years ago all the way through about 1910, this museum has everything youd ever want to see about Russian history, pre-Bolshevik. Each of the 40 rooms takes you to a different time, region, and setting, laying out amazing relics from each time and place. I spent about 5 hours here, and had to go quickly. Also in the building is Stalins Rolls Royce, be sure to check that out as well. The only thing Id like to see is English descriptions of the items, as almost all of it is in Russian (which is understandable!). A must see in the Red Square area, you can easily spend a day here if youre interested in history.

Sadly very little to learn due to lack of English explanation. Only a small section has eglish translation for the items but hard to follow the flow and who ordered them for what, what are the significance of those items. Its perhaps worth getting an audio speaker but I read even then its still hard. Perhaps best is to join some tours to learn more. There is a lot of items..

This is one of the incredible buildings that has the red square, it even seems to change its color tone from day to night. inside you can find an infinity of history from prehistory to the way the tsars lived. Even before finishing the tour you can see the Rolls Royce of Vladimir Lenin. I recommend visiting it in the afternoon and when leaving you can go to Nikólskaya street to drink or eat something.

The museum gives 100 percent great experience to every visitor. Your age, gender, social group, educational level are not significant in that everyone receives unique and peculiar emotions inside, so you just should buy the ticket and enjoy history itself. There are always several independent exhibitions; therefore, the choice is huge.

Who wants to get to know Russia a little bit better must visit this museum. The ticket for the museum is also for Saint Basils Cathedral...

I really think it is one of the best places in the world to learn about Russian history. If you want to get a real glimpse of the whole museum, reserve around 4 good hours (an entire afternoon should make it). They offer audio guides at the gallery entrance and they were of big help to us, despite the fact that there are some places where some information in English is offered. Nevertheless, they happen to be inexpensive and very helpful, though. My favourite part was the Viking and Medieval section, well explained and rich in details. If you are in Moscow, dont miss out this amazing place!

The State Historical Museum is the beautiful red-brick building facing St. Basils Cathedral from the northeast end of the Red Square in Moscow. Opening Hours 10-6pm daily with extended hours to 9pm (Friday and Saturday).Constructed in 1883 in Russian Revival Style, this is one of the most attractive buildings on the Red Square. The deep red colour of the building complements the nearby Kremlin and helps give support to the name of this square. You can enjoy building architecture from all sides. It is impressive from within the Red Square and on the opposite Manezhnaya Square as well.In addition to simply viewing this attractive historical building, a visit inside to the see the History Museum (400 RUBis worth a couple hours of time as well. Here you will see several floors of halls and gallery rooms displaying historical items and artefacts from prehistoric to present times. There is greater emphasis on recent centuries and the expansion of the Russian State.Rooms are cover three floors and museum items are spaced out and well presented in a chronological manner, making it easy to make your way through the collection. Unfortunately, most item displays are in Russian only so it is challenging to know exactly what you are looking at much of the time. Perhaps in time they will update information displays to include English.Overall, we enjoyed our time at the State Historical Museum and considered it worth the two hours we spent here. There are some interesting items on display and even with many displays being Russian only, you can get a decent feel for early and recent Russian history during your visit. Obviously, viewing the exterior architecture of the building is something everyone will enjoy, regardless if you intend to spend time within the museum or not.

Lots of beautiful architecture and exhibits, but dull content.I haven’t learned one meaningful thing in the audio tour. Clothes and coins and other things are described in painful detail, but an ANALYSIS or deeper understanding of political or economic developments is missing completely. How did Catherine the Great or Lenin come to power? How come I still don’t know that after visiting this museum? Also, way too expensive for what it is!!

The highlight for me was the Rolls Royce of Lenin ,,, however dont expect anything near the Hermitage St. Petersburg .. If you can only visit one museum whilst in Russia, make sure thats the one (same entrance fee)..(Pity that most of the art objects do not have an English description as many other people have commented here)

Loooots of things. You need much more than 1.5hrs to visit cus there are a lot of details if you are a history geek. And you need to know Russian cus there was 15% English translation on some stuff. I used google photo translator but still. If I could get a guide that couldve been amazing so heads up to you.

Hardly no English descriptions and explanations! This is supposed to be the NATIONAL STATE MUSEUM? The collection is amazing but it is not worth a damn if the visitor cant understand its meaning.
