Built in 1863, this restored iron-hulled windjammer is now a history musuem that occasionally sails.
The Star of India is the largest ship in the Maritime Museum and arguably the most interesting. Take the time to read the history of the vessel on the plaques spread throughout as its quite interesting. The ship had an entire career of bad luck and suffered a mutiny (the first of manyon its very first voyage. You can easily spend and hour walking through the exhibits. One important thing to note is bathrooms have been installed onboard for convenience.
Oldest fully operational vessel in the world. Has never had an engine. Great historical displays inside, as well as lots of ship models and interactive stuff for the kids. Part of the larger maritime museum, one ticket gets you a tour of all the vessels.
The coolest of all the ships in the Maritime Museum lineup. Loved my time spent in it. And the sea monster exhibit was super fun!
Its good to see something interesting. But disappointed that they cannot clean up the garbage along the boats and rocks. This is a tourist spot they should maintain the cleanliness. Also need more washroom as some of the corner in the area smell piss. Even the washroom along the seaport not cleaned.
Loved the ships and the weather. Lots of reading.
Im afraid of boats but it was definitely worth it. It was beautiful and I had so much fun. And there are other boats to get on at that museum.
If you like tall ships it was neat. Had a sea monster exhibit and the volunteer has very knowledgable
The boat museum is one of a kind..... Like literally there is only this boat with so much history. To see all the floors, the size and the history is amazing. You are on a boat that has sailed the seas for over hundreds of years. I would have loved to have paid for the extra boat ride on it but it was a spur of the moment choice to go to the museum. Would highly recommend if you have the kids or super into boats too, or a history/museum buff! Ya har!
Great docents. A very interesting look at sailing history. The restoration of the figure head will be awesome - I hope I can come back to see it when its complete and places back on the bow.
The Star of India is one of several ships you can go aboard at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. This is a nice place to visit, theres is more than one can see, the displays are somewhat old fashioned, lots of information. If you are lucky you may visit with one of the volunteers who can be very informative. For the Star of India it has a unique history, and is an interesting ship. Not sure about the sea monster exhibit, spent more time reading about the ship’s history. There is a lot of upkeep keeping the ships maintained, it’s nice to visit them.
Very beautiful ship! It was completely empty when I was walking around. They have a lot of literature for a self-guided tour. I especially enjoyed the story of the "Most Dramatic Incident". Sails were not up while I was visiting, but Ive seen it before when theyre up. That was slightly disappointing.
Absolutely incredible exhibit of an old sail ship. I can only imagine how impressive it is when its out in the bay with the wind in its sails.
Very cool ship to walk through.
Beautiful woodworking wonderful ship
Really cool tour. Cant recommend it higher if you like sailboats, and the history of sailing.
The maritime museum is fun to see ships of different ages. This is great for families, especially with kids who love "pirate ships". Very informative and interesting. Liked being able to go into ship
A beautiful spot for taking wedding pictures.Photo by : PKA Photography
The Star of India is part of the Maritime Museum. The ship is well maintained with many areas accessible. It was much bigger on the inside than I thought it was. While we were there, there was the different groups of children learning about life at sea and the various jobs on the shop. It was great to listen to all the different areas. The ship is amazing with many things to see and read inside. Entrance to the Maritime Museum is not expensive and definitely worth the money, even if you are not into boats!
Nice experience to have had, good for all ages
Beautiful old ship thats still sea worthy. A must see for any visit to San Diego. There a submarine and a wonderful 19th century yacht along with some reproduction 17th century sailing ships and a giant old car ferry that serves as a museum and banquet hall now. A must see for any maritime lovers.
Really cool experience! Make sure to get there an hour before closing or you will not be able to buy a ticket. It’s not just for The Star, but also for a submarine and a couple of other ships and a museum.
Fun experience. The measum has lots of exhibits and historical facts. We went for a few hours and barely scratched the surface of things to learn in the museum.
The ships and boats were cool to see, including a fancy ferry, pirate ship and submarine. Explore at your own pace. Im surprised there arent more safety measures in place for the public as all the boats, save the ferry have ship ladders, which are very steep, and have little to hang onto, a true experience of ships! This may cause experience limitations for small children, parents with babies and anyone who struggles to get around. Two ships for the exhibit were MIA. One in repairs and one on a trip. If they were there it would have been more enriching and taken much more time as it looked like they were larger ships. Self-paced tour could easily take an entire afternoon if exploring in depth and all boats are present. $20 or so a person for unguided tour. Guided tours are offered for a different price and are only certain days and times.
A beautiful ship, and although a part of the larger Maritime museum it is in itself a museum with many exhibits below decks. It would be great fun to take a voyage on her if the opportunity ever presented itself. Dont forget to look up and see the beautiful original stained glass in the ceiling of the main cabin.
Excellent conditions, kept to its time era, clean lots of information. We loved it and also is part of the marine museum so it all cost 15. You see everything for 15.00 and if you add 10.00 more you get a tour of the harbor and is very informative.
A must if your into ships, pirates, submarines, and history. Fun for kids of all ages.
Well worth a lookStar of India is an iron-hulled sailing ship, built in 1863 in Ramsey, Isle of Man Retired in 1926, she was restored as a seaworthy museum ship in 1962–3 and home-ported at the Maritime Museum of San Diego in San Diego, CaliforniaThe Star of India has appeared in episodes of..........Dirty Jobs Season Four, Episode 89,Ghost Hunters Season Four, Episode 426,Great Ships episode "The Windjammers".Haunted History Season One, Episode 3, "Haunted Ships"At the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, Ubisoft used the ship to promote their new game Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag and renamed the ship for 3 days after the in-game ship The Jackdaw.Ghost Adventures Season 12, Episode 6 "Star of India"There Goes a Boat, episode 7
An absolutely beautiful ship! Have been to the Maritime Museum two times now, one for a birthday, and the other for the Star of Indias 158th Anniversary. What a cool celebration! Had a couple of folks singing shanties, had cake & punch, and was able to walk around the ships as normal. Definitely recommend to all who is interested, super cool people and gorgeous history!
Historic collection of ships, submarines, and nautical items.Plenty of parking and very affordable. Go see it!
The magnificent Star of India and the Maritime Museum collection of historic sailing ships is one of San Diegos top attractions. -- This "tall ship," technically a barque, was launched as the Euterpe on November 14, 1863 at Ramsey, on the Isle of Man. It is the oldest surviving merchant vessel still afloat. The entire restored ship, its decks and quarters are open to visitors, with numerous informative displays and ship models below decks. -- The Star of India is also periodically available for 4 hour sailing tours of San Diego Bay. Dont miss it. Check the Maritime Museum website for more information.
My family and I had a wonderful time here! The people working there were so delightful and chalked full of knowledge!
If youre visiting San Diego, take advantage of the Maritime museum tours and take a walk on the world’s oldest active sailing ship, the Star of India. You wont regret it.Here are some interesting facts that can be found on sdmaritime.orgLaunched five days before Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg AddressSailed twenty-one times around the worldNever fitted with auxiliary powerWent aground in HawaiiBecame an “American” ship by Act of CongressTrapped in ice in AlaskaStill sails in the ocean by a volunteer crew
A gem in the middle of a Crown surrounded by majestic views and nostalgic memories. The Star of India is very well preserved and gloriously in full display. I crewed her in 1984. Volunteer are needed to help throughout the Museum.
Really cool experience. Reminded me of when I lived in Connecticut and went to mystic to see all the old tall shops there. Even though you couldnt go downstairs due to covid. It was still really cool to use my imagination on what it was like in those times.
This is also a must see, being the oldest functional sailboat, The Star of India is a beautiful vessel!! Im 51 and the steering wheel is taller then me!! Staff was very friendly, the tour is only $20 (credit card onlyand includes 5 ships total to tour. The Berkeley is amazing and has some very impressive model ships to see.
We loved this place very informative and the free boat ride was both informative and very much relaxing. It was great to be out on the water like that. Worth every $. The volunteers are all very helpful and they know their stuff. Unfortunately, because of covid you cant go below deck butit still worth it to go.
Visited today and had a great time..we took a tour of all the ships and subs in the harbor. And boated on a 45 minute tour around San Diego Bay that was very informative and our tour guide was very funny!
Great reproduction of the original version. Loved the detailed collection of items on the ship. Great way to spend your time. Part of the larger maritime waterfront, there are plenty of exhibits and photo ops!
A very interesting visit if you like ships and the history of the sea. The ship is fully restored (she was built in England during the civil warand shes still seaworthy. There are some interesting exhibits but the real star is the ship itself. Definitely worth the visit.
I love the Maritimes museum. Every time we fly out to San Diego we have to go check the ships. Maybe its the kid in me but I love imagining owning something like that and sailing. The historical aspect of the ships are ao fascinating and when you go on the Berkeley the museum has lots of great history and stuff to look at. Words are 2 dimensional! You have to go check it out.
What a cool part of the Maritime museum. Was so excited to see this ship and to see the restoration and all of the history housed inside of it. The volunteers took some time to help my kids make some rope and learn some various nautical terms and knots.
Touring this ship was so much fun! It is self guided so the tour is what you make of it, but I loved the history and attention to detail. Not to mention, this thing can STILL SAIL!! I didnt get to take a cruise on it as of yet, but it is absolutely on the bucket list for our next trip back out to San Diego. One of the awesome things about it was the staff and how they interacted with a group of students on a field trip. They had them hoisting sails, yelling commands, and moving "gun powder" kegs around the galley via pulleys. It was really cool to watch as a spectator roaming the ship separately from them. Love to see historical education is still going strong!!
A fantastic place to visit it you have a few hours to spare. The museum as a whole is full of interesting facts about maritime life and the vessels there. And the Star of India is like the shining gem it shares a name with. There are plenty of things to look at, and it took us nearly two hours to take it all in. For such a small fee (less than $20/personit was well worth the trip.
It was a nice trip back into historic maritime. But with so much other great stuff going on in San Diego we did not have time to visit all the vessels which make up the Maritime Museum. Star of India, the ferry boat and one of the submarine vessels was all we could visit in our time frame.
The Star of India is part of the San Diego Maritime Museum. It is the oldest active tall ship in the world. Anyone can come down on Sunday mornings at 8am to volunteer and learn how to work a ship. It is labor intensive and very rewarding. She has very well done exhibits and models of lots of ships much like the rest of the museum. She is one of the last touchable pieces of this era and it is well worth a visit.
I visited the HMS Victory in Portsmouth last year. The ship was amazing and the museum and dock facilities were top notch, I would highly recommend the trip if you love maritime history.San Diego, while lacking the use of a retired Navy base has a lineup of ships that is quite impressive. The subs are top notch and their collection of sea worthy ships is impressive.
Beautiful ship with history. Worth exploring this barque, especially if youve never been on a tall ship before. Almost the entire ship can be explored.
Very interesting sailing ship with an historic past. Entrance to this ship also gets you in to several other ships and a Russian Foxtrot sub, and at a fair price. The Star of India is a large sailing ship, metal hull, that served many years under several flags taking passengers as well as workmen, cases of salmon, freight and necessities to Alaska and back. Naturally well lit on most decks for pictures, it is well worn but still looks well maintained considering her age.
My kids have both done the overnight field trip on the Star of India & I Chaperoned as a "Tall Sailor" both times. The kids & adults had a fantastic time (despite the night shift). Its such a great experience for all!
Spent 2 hours wandering around one evening. So many things to see, and imagine! Great kids program, and fun to watch. A joy to speak to the volunteers! Worth every penny.
