Staggering Ox - Sandwich shop in Helena, United States
Really disappointed.. I got a taco salad and all it came with was lettuce and chips. I had to ask 3 times for the chili that comes with it. Honestly a waste of money. My trash has had better…
This was first time I had ever had a sandwich in the bread bowl. Strange idea, but it works very well. The sandwich tasted great. The staff was a pleasure to deal with and we had a great time.
I got there at the end of the day. I ordered a chili cheese dog, and got a hot dog with lettuce and chilli nod cheese with garlic ranch for some reason. It was my first time being here. So I may be ignorant as to the whole process. The service was fast and friendly. I just wish I got what I wanted. LolFood was good.
What a fun restaurant with awesome sandwiches of all types. Great atmosphere and place to hang out. The decor is super fun to check out too.
The Staggering Ox is rad! Awesome atmosphere with cool art and delicious chow. The clubfoot sandwhich is bomb diggity! 👍😎
My favorite sandwich place. The Clubhouse on white bread with ranch is unbeatable and the quesadilla was great too. Like the new menu options.
Great choice in sandwiches! Love the sauces. Mixed experience with bread; dont know why. Biggest peeve still that they never label the sandwiches forcing us to figure it out ourselves. Love the ambience: large space for eating.
Service is friendly and the food is good. Service is a tad slow.
Great place, easy to order, reasonable prices.
Best sandwich I ever had i always stop by when I pass through the nuke is my favorite
Unique. Food was very good. Order taker and kitchen were overwhelmed but it was worth waiting for.
Very good sandwiches , the prices are fair and they have a good selection. The sandwiches are in a fun tube and you get your choice of a sauce. I had the nuke with a ranch sauce and they give you plenty of meat in them. You wont walk away hungry
Food was unique and delicious, but very slow service. Waited for over 30 min.
Food was prepared properly and was very tasty. I would eat here again based on this alone. There was one other persone needing to be served and left the counter as we approached. The young woman at the counter finished up and did not greet us. We did order and watched as others entered, ordered, and were served. We got up from our table and waited patiently among others who were in line. Once our turn again at the counter we were told that our food was in fact done....therefore it had been sitting there for about 10 to 15 minutes. Long story short, food was good....SERVICE SUCKED!!!!!!!!!
What fun! A number of awesome sandwich combinations inside a unique hole round roll. Great, fresh taste, lots of meat and cheese, a terrific value and some beautiful artwork to look at. Cant recommend highly enough.
(Posting on behalf of Mike): I’ve been a loyal customer of the Staggering Ox for over twenty years; they used to be the best sandwich place in town, but in the past few years, their quality has gone way down. I don’t know if it’s due to new ownership or new management, but the decline is obvious. The last few times my wife and I have ordered there, we have each noticed that the sandwiches had about half as much meat as they used to, even though the prices keep going up. Today I ordered a pastrami sandwich and when I got it home I found that the bread shell was only half full. There was no pastrami, only some lettuce and a few slices of pepperoni. I took the sandwich back and asked for a replacement. Did they remake my sandwich from scratch? No. They just stuffed a wad of ham – not pastrami – ham into the same bread shell that I brought back to the store. How do I know it was the same one? Because the slices of pepperoni were still in there. I’m pretty sure that violates some health regulations. Then they put the sandwich back into the same brown paper bag it was in the first time and called that good. The old owners would have never allowed slop like that to leave their restaurant. The Ox is a shadow of what it used to be. I am never going there again, and I suggest others do the same.
Far too long to wait for a sandwich. Food is good but not worth an hour wait.
Food was good. I liked the sandwich (although pretty much impossible to eat in any reasonable wayand several of the sauces. However the staff was sooooooo terrible. Its like they were trying to be as impolite and dismissive as possible. The place was practically empty and they couldnt be bothered to even be asked if they had a high chair. I got an exceptionally snotty response from the gal at the counter. I heard them talk to the next customer the same way . I cant imagine why you would be so overtly rude to the few customers you have....
Normally they do a good job and I enjoy their food, but something was really off 6/26.Over 50 minutes for 2 sandwiches. While waiting I saw 4 customers approach due to incorrect orders. 1 customer’s order was entirely lost and they had to re-order.I understand the sign “we don’t make fast food…” but 50 minutes for cold sandwiches and no hot items?
I had a group order for six and everything was awesome. Our group loved the unique bread option. Would revisit Staggering Ox when in Helena. Very affordable and good!
Love the Ox ! The employees are always nice, and the sandwiches are the best !
What an insult the Helena location is to the Staggering Ox restaurants. Ive been eating at Staggering Ox for over 20 years and have never been unhappy until the Helena location. How do you forget ingredients like ranch sauce and lettuce on 3 sandwiches? Ask for extra ingredients that are included and get none of that ingredient at all. Its a sandwich not rocket science.
When ever I go there I get a nuke sandwich. Been eating hear since I was 8 ish. Always loved it. I’ve never been to anything like it in a good way.
Something for everyone! If you’re looking for a clean eating, straight forward meal, this is the place. Bonus points for lots of gluten free options too!
Maybe this place has a local cult following but if you’re actually looking for good service, fresh food and a good value this isn’t it. I’ve tried this place three different times and it’s not worth the gas to try a 4th.
My husband ordered the Reuben sandwich today. It had corned beef and lettuce on it. He showed it to the young man at the counter with the sandwich opened up. The young man insisted that there was sauerkraut and cheese on it but they had “melted in”. Dumb decision. That was my husband’s first and last visit to a Staggering Ox.
Very good food. Love the bread and ranch. My favorite sandwiches are: the nuke, the broken heart and the crab one
My pregnant wife and I with our 3 daughters went in this Sunday afternoon around 1:30. We were assaulted by the man behind the counter he called himself a supervisor. He called us dusch bags in front of our kids and everyone behind us amongst other things. People were so appalled they left out the door right behind us. if the general manager reads this please contact us. We would like to make a formal complaint
I didnt know you could make a flavorless sandwich, but the Ox nailed it. They could win competitions for "most overhyped tasteless food" if there were such a contest. Maybe the ox is staggering from malnutrition?
Make sure you check your food before you leave.I ordered a sandwich that was prepared wrong, but I didnt realize the sandwich was incorrect until I was across town after they had closed. The sandwich was not just wrong, it was not their usual caliber. Ive attached a photo (the first one), if youve ever had a good Staggering Ox sandwich, you would know this isnt it.I went in the next day and the manager gave me a free replacement sandwich based off of the first picture because they do have standards. Ive attached a picture of the replacement sandwich (The second one).Moral of the story: check your food before you leave and they will remake it if its wrong.
I just waited an hour for a Philly steak sandwich. I would understand if it was busy but it was not. Along with listening to the staff argue and walk around in the back I will no longer be coming back, though I have been a long time customer, today will be my last unfortunately. Then when I get home the sandwich is burnt. Crunchy like a cracker
How do you make a ham sammich uncommon??...go to the Ox, obviously the clubfoot bread is unique and I would say its better to experience than try to explain, but its not that the only thing good about the place is the weird shape of its bread (which has multiple fresh baked options...order the bread guts as well as your sammiethe stuff that goes in it also is really good *especially the sauces (multiple delicious versions of ranch as well as plenty of other options)
The food was unique and delicious. The customer service was lacking. Its no fun when you can tell that the staff doesnt want to be there.
Love this place! Love the food. Love the atmosphere. Extremely disappointed that when I tried to order food at 5:15, their grill was already turned off and they could only serve cold sandwiches. The establishment is open until 6 pm which isn’t even that late for the dinner rush, so closing early is definitely a big disappointment.
this place is absolutely amazing, beautiful, unique and a total 5 star rating! i love the art here, its sooo interesting!!
Seriously disappointed. We always enjoy the Ox when visiting. This time the lettuce was wilted and some browned, small amount of meat and veggies, big gaps in the sandwich edges, dry bread, which all isnt typical. Dang. Really like this place. 😞
Big place busy, ordered a Hot Pastrami. 1 slice of pastrami with some onions. It was horrible...I dont write reviews but this is the worst. Safeway makes a better sandwich.
Theyve been a Helena fixture for over 35 years. Quite popular. The food is good with a large variety to chose from, even a build your own sandwich menu, and plenty of options for those with food allergies or other dietary restrictions. The sandwiches come in a unique, soft, cylinder bread "pocket". Theres even a bar area in back, open during the day only. The place def has an eclectic feel; very artsy, eastern mysticism, anti-establishment attitude. Some people love that atmosphere. If thats you, youll love this place.
Can’t recommend this place enough. The sandwiches are absolutely delicious, and such a cool inventive way to serve it. I’m from out of town and this was recommended by a couple of friendly locals. I’m so grateful for the recommendation, I probably would never had found this place otherwise! Don’t forget to get some of the bread guts :)
Fresh, delicious food, plus a large dining area and lots of interesting artwork (for sale!on the walls. The Club and the Philly are particularly good. The bread guts are a great option for the pickier eaters.
So impressed with the healthy eats. Great live music, art, healthy eats, and ambiance. Im inspired to inquire about franchising in Ashland, Oregon.
An amazing restaurant, and with a nice environment. They have a captivating scene of exotic decorations, and an open ventilation system thats regulates clean air. The food is absolutely delicious, and at an astonishingly low price. I had always known theyd been internationally renowned for their sandwiches, but being able to eat one finally made me understand why. If you are passing by, than this is a must-go restaurant.
This place has ALWAYS been my favorite sandwich shop in Montana.Sadly. I’m not so sure about that anymore.Took my boyfriend here to show him my favorite place and, spend our money locally. Sadly, this place has changed a lot since I was last here. Customer service was not present, tables and chairs were not clean and, I donot mind busing my own table yet, there were no supplies to do so.My sandwich was made incorrectly and, I had to go back and ask for pineapple (I ordered my favorite, the Rabbit Hole - which I highly recommend on Garlic Parmesan bread with chipotle ranch sauce. My boyfriends sandwich was not made correctly either but he didn’t say anything until we left as he knew I loved this spot and didn’t want me feel bad. Also they were out of bread guys for sale by 11:30am ? Strange.Overall, this place used to be great. And now, I’m not sure about it.I don’t think I’ll be recommending this place anymore until I come back and, give it another go next time I’m in town.I miss the great sandwiches and, fantastic customer service. This time round it was not awful but it was not even good.Come back Staggering Ox !!!I’ve been a loyal customer for over 12 years and I want to continue to be. Sadly, this was just a day trip to Helena so, I won’t be back for a while.
Good food. Kids loved the peanut butter and jelly. Very large place. Lots of high chairs and tables. Very orginal sandwich in a roll.
Fun atmosphere, delicious food, friendly service! They make their bread in a can for sandwiches 😁
Sandwiches and atmosphere were awesome! Service was not. No one in line and it took almost 15 minutes to make our 3 sandwiches.
I will admit, slightly above normal sandwich prices, Until, I received my meal...Obviously freshly baked 🍞, fresh ingredients, unique ambience to bootInteresting yet pleasantly surprised...Then I wandered to the back area and discovered a comfortable music venue & coffee shop...But WAIT, THERES MORE!!!Not originally from Montana, I found TREASURE, REAL FRENCH PASTRIES & Classic cinnamon rolls, so Cool!!!!I was told the variety of pastries vary and are all Great...Give it a try, unique employees and art
I grew up eating at Staggering Ox, traveling thru Helena, wanted to share with my husband for his first time. Food hasnt changed, they still have my favorite crab trap. My husband thought a meatball and mashed potatoes would be flavorful in their bread.
Interesting sandwiches. Their bacon ranch and chipotle ranch sauces were unfortunately better than the sandwich. Cool place to hang though and open early and late for a sandwich shop.
Very nice staff, awesome food and a good atmosphere make a great experience.I definitely recommend this one and the one in Missoula!
