330 Rep. John Lewis Way N, Nashville, TN 37219, United States, Nashville
Built in the 1840s, this elegant landmark is known as Nashville's oldest church still standing.
Went to Mass at St Marys in Nashville. One of the parishioners was kind enough to explain the history. Very friendly parish.
A truly Catholic faith community! No watering down of the faith so often seen in other places. The music was exceptional and the liturgy very reverent. A refreshing change!
Just stopped by the outside and took a quick peek. The church is pretty for sure.
This church design by William Strickland is one of three buildings on capital hill that should be visited. Strickland designed the Greek Revival State Capitol and is buried there. He also designed the Presbyterian Egyptian style church nearby. Very talented mid-nineteenth century Greek Revival architect transplanted from Philadelphia.
Where heaven meets earth. Loved Holy Mass while visiting Downtown Nashville!
While on vacation, we attended the Novus Ordo Latin Mass on Sunday morning. Confessions at 8:15, Mass at 9am. There are Mass response sheets in the entryway for the Latin vs English. Communion rail is used at Mass. Tomb of 1st bishop of Nashville is near confessionals. Pews & floor creak, reminiscent of Mass in a small town with my grandma many years ago. Parking is free on Sundays in church lot. Police patrol the entry & unlock gates at 8:15. A few homeless people around the church, but all was calm.
A beautiful and historic church! I went to the 9am Latin Mass and really enjoyed it.
Loved the Easter Vigil! Beautiful traditional latin mass. They have a chior of angels! Beautiful music.
Sacred , reverent, beautiful ad orientem mass.
Beautiful small church . Well taken care of. Very peaceful place.
Very traditional mass, latin, kneel at the alter for communion. Homily was great. Pastor was amazing
Really Nice and Historic church !Thank you for making us feel welcomed.
The most reverent Novus Ordo Mass I’ve ever attended!
It was so beautiful to visit! I went to confession prior to mass, and gave myself plenty of time to do the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Rosary, prior to mass. The mass was said in English, but some of the songs were in Latin. It was refreshing to receive communion on the tongue. Im so glad we went to mass there!
If you are looking for a place to worship and pray this Church and its parishioners are very welcoming.
Beautiful, holy place to experience a very reverent Mass.
Hi, can somebody tell me about TN?I’m from Russia and my dream live in AmericaMy inst: @fedotov_te29Thank you, Have nice day)
I feel so grateful to Fr. Neely for upholding Catholic values and above all, the sanctity of the Holy Eucharist. During the last year of COVID-19 debauchery Fr. Neely hasnt failed to lead us when so many other priests have disgraced our Lord. His homilies are always so informative and keep my attention. I learn something new every week.
If you are looking for a traditional mass celebration, this is one of the few Catholic churches in the Nashville area.
A beautiful church and a wonderful religious mass. Some awe here.
The building is very beautiful. I felt the presence of God. So glad that I wondered in for mass at 12:10 pm. Just what I needed. It is conveniently located across from the bus station in the heart of downtown Nashville. I would greatly recommend that you swing through and check the place out. Glad I took this opportunity to stop in and pray during these trying times that we are all experiencing. Peace be with you.
The staff is nice and friendly but the church goers well Ill put it like this iv been going for some time now and still ant found a church family there.
Please be aware that as of Aug 1 2020 this church does NOT require facemasks. Communion is given on the tongue with everyone huddled at the altar. This is NOT safe and does not comply with either the Diocese or City of Nashville COVID-19 mask regulations. We were very disappointed and did not l safe receiving communion.Otherwise, the place is beautiful, convenient to downtown and the priests homily was great. This is an old school parish where the priest faces the altar and the music is Gregorian / Latin.
Beautiful old Catholic Church.Ad orientum Mass was simple and reverent.
Wonderful church. You could feel the history behind it once you walked in. Everyone was very welcoming.
Beautiful old church. Reverent.
This church is absolutely beautiful. Amazing mass, powerful choir, and participating congregation.
The music and the church is always beautiful and we arent regular members but we go on Christmas Eve because they have a gorgeous mass but this time we left feeling very offended. It was horrible. The mass was beautiful until the gospel when the priest basically said you should go to church every Sunday and if you dont you need to go to confession and you wont be able to receive communion; he continued to say that if you are not 100% committed to the Catholic Church you arent welcome. We felt very targeted and on top of it all this wasnt the actual Christmas Eve Mass. The church had performed the mass from the week before with the wrong homily. We have been very unhappy with the church lately but decided to go since its Christmas and was very unhappy even furious with what the priest said during the gospel and with the church overall. We wont be coming here again.
Small church with a Latin mass, priest with his back to the congregation and a communion kneeling rail. Not my normal preference, but there was a good sermon and, in the end, it was an interesting experience.
Beautiful church in the shadow of the Capitol. Built by Irish labor in devotion to Our Lady. Worth a visit to get a sense of the velocity of change in Nashville.
One of the most beautiful services ever. Beautiful building. Beautiful art. Beautiful people. Smart and gracious message. Beautiful.
It was my 1st time to this prayfull Church. Thank God, all His houses are comfortable for prayers, meditations and consolation.
Beautiful church, was the second cathedral of the diocese of Nashville. Good traditional ordinary form mass.
Reverent celebration of the Mass with appropriate music. Great schola at the 9AM Sunday Mass. Solid, faithful homilies.
OMG. I was blown away with this visit. Relic of many Saints as you enter...bishop offered Mass two minutes after our arrival..so beautiful! Cant wait to go again. Had to leave 4 am to get there. Nice drive.
St. Marys has become my downtown oasis. When I need to get away from the office to pray and calm down, I go to the mid-day mass. I am so grateful for it being so close and for the kind, beautiful parishioners that welcome me even though I am not Catholic.
This church is my neighbor.Mother Mary was an advent evangelist anglican saint that help Bishop Jerry E. Gordon teach and preach to me the bible at a young age. As a teenager I carried the word with me as I continued to study and learn the holy word. I am still learning. The Holy Word knows me better than I know myself.Saint Marys Church of the Seven Sorrows is the oldest church in Nashville, Tennessee.During the United States Civil War 300 Union and Confederate soilders died in the main floor of the church.More Americans died in the United States Civil War than all American historically recorded wars combined.
Beautiful Catholic church. The oldest Catholic church in Nashville. Free parking in the lot next door for Sunday mass.
Used the self parking lot, probably wouldnt have chosen it had I known it was $29 per night for a TPAC childs dance recital.
A very beautiful church with a committed parish community. At 8am with a rainy day, families with young to older children were dressed respectfully for church giving praise to God. As a visitor from the Miami Area, it is a refreshing change from parishioners looking more like their going to the beach or soccer event arriving 30 minutes late and leaving right after receiving communion. Congratulations to this Parish in Nashville in its respect and commitment to God.
St. Mary’s is a gem of a place. Both the mass and the people are wonderful. Never been to such reverent and welcoming place.
A MUST go church and the oldest in Nashville Lots of Latin in the mass and Father Jay does a great job. Traditional church Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, Mass celebrated ad orientem. Kneel at an old fashion kneeler for communion - respectful, reverential, and quiet place to pray.
I was in town and this parish had a mass at the right time. What a treasure this is. A historic building from 1867 and a beautiful, reverent liturgy with a mix of hymns and Latin and the priest was ad orientum.
9 am Sunday is a high mass with lots of insence. Ventilation is low so smokey inside. Gregorian chant was very well done. Priest says concretion with back to congregation.Much of mass in Latin. No sign of peace. Communion is kneeling at railing of Alter.
This really is a lovely church. It’s near the bus station; the area is a little run-down. I only found it open just before and for noon mass. Otherwise the iron bars keep the place inaccessible.
Love the mass. Very reverent. Not often I get the opportunity to attend a high mass. Love this place.
Beware I paid 18.00 to park at lot next to church. 11:00 and confession was to start at 11:30. They were locked up tight as a drum. Not really a service for the community. We left and went to the Cathedral which was open and inviting with free parking and we were able to attend mass. St. Marys should post open hours, so we dont get roped into paying that parking. I have never heard of a church being closed like that during daylight hours. Church should be a sanctuary.
The oldest standing church in Nashville is full of history and beautiful details. Its a great place to both worship and visit!
Daily Mass, oldest church in Nashville, warm and inviting, in the centre of downtown Nashville.I go to daily Mass while on lunch during the weekdays. Theres something about being with the Lord and getting away from conference calls, emails, and spreadsheets - just calming and spiritually energising.
Lovely old church. Mass is wonderful. Lots of activities for married couples. Not so much for singles that I have seen in the bulletins
