Whitewashed ex-smokehouse where Fergus Henderson pioneered the resurgent interest in offal dishes.
July 2021 was our first time to visit, everything was great until the waiter spilled the red wine on our table and didn’t say anything. Forward to our 2nd visit last night, it was all perfect! The food is what me and my hubby would say would be our go to and comfort food. Wine, good. Starters, so good. Mains, so good and the desserts too! Our waiter was awesome (saw me stuffing my face with yumminess 🤣)Tip: always ask for the specials and you will be surprised and do try them all! 👍🏻
I have been reading about this place for years and it is everything it is cracked up to be. The service was excellent, the bread was the best I have had in years in flavor crumb and really really good crust. The bone marrow was super stand out. This is not a dressy place so come dressed "relaxed chic".
Very clean and industrial looking place. Truly a delectable list of nose-to-tail offerings. They dont try to impress you with service or any razzmatazz - they focus their efforts mainly in their food and their wine and it totally shines through. To be sure, the Madeleines are certainly worth a special mention!
By far the best bread we‘ve had in London. All dishes beside the dessert were really lovely, albeit missing about of salt. The desserts consistency and flavour was just not for us. The price point for the cuts of meat is quite heafty but for London normal/alright?! We wish there would be more restaurants serving traditional nose to tail foods. One male staff member was very attentive of us, but quite busy with lots of other tables, the others ignored us a bit when we tried to order. But there seemed to be two big parties keeping most busy, still it would be nice if small tables would also get attention. We enjoyed our stay and would love to come back!
An incredible meal and food-driven dining experience. Minimalist interiors. Perfect service. Nose to tail cuisine with a new menu, daily.
Nose to tail eating at its best. Thank your for the wonderful experience. Well be back!!
St. John was exceptional, I didn’t expect food can be this good. The best way to describe the food would be someone who is a 10/10 without make up on, most 1 star or good restaurants are 8/10 with heavy make up ;). It’s like love at first sight, it only happens few times in your lifetime.. or like the kid in class you simply don’t try to beat because you know you cannot make up for talent with just hard work. If I were a commitment phobic, I would marry St. John in a heartbeat.
Food done right. Everything about this place was simple, yet elegant and the food was just beyond delicious. Prices are very fair and food is simple, nothing funky like some other places these days. They focus on quality food and not just instagramable dishes. The menu changes daily!
Great no-frills food. This restaurant cooks pretty straightforward cuisine exceptionally well. The service is great. The wines are fantastic. This isnt your Michelin starred tasting menus with ridiculously fancy flourishes on everything; just brilliant food ordered a la carte.
I had an absolutely amazing lunch here. I was taking myself out for a nice meal and show in the west end after finishing my dissertation and had heard good things but, was unprepared for how excellent the food, drinks, and service was.The restaurant is dedicated to using all the parts of the animal and produce they can and it’s cooking focused on well done basics. I found no gimmicks in their choice of plates or overly complicated descriptions. It was cooked well, balanced, and paired with a fitting wine. The bone marrow salad and toast is a classic I see everyone get here and after having it I can see why; it is rich in the best way and pairs that with enough (truly excellentbread and sharp flavors in the salad to create a well balanced, delightfully crunchy, and hearty dish. For my main I had the Ox heart. It blew me away, the strips of heart reminded me texturally of a flank steak grill and were chewier than the traditional higher end steaks. I enjoyed this as it gave me more time to savor the flavor of the heart mixed with the au jus and horseradish. I was really blown away by the quality of the blitzed peas. Normally I’m not a fan of British pease because they tend to lose their flavor when mushed but, the blitz kept some structure and brought out the sweetness perfectly. The peas highlighted the deep savory and umami notes of the heart and also on their own just mixed beautifully with the horseradish. My server was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about all the food on the menu and the best pairings. I don’t remember his name but he was a blonde fellow in his late 30s and made sure I got the most out of my meal. He was quick and courteous as it looked like all the servers I saw were. With a starter, a main, and a drink I spent ~£60 so I’d recommend saving this for special occasions or splitting with a friend if you are on a budget. The best food I’ve had in London this year.
Very interesting and special restaurant which offers nose-to-tail dining. I love cuisine with special parts meat, but it is so hard to find in London. This is the place I would regularly visit.Ive ordered mostly from the specials board - pork, bone marrow, beef liver and heart. All perfectly cooked in French style. The bread and desserts were also great, including the famous eton mess! All the staff were very friendly and gave us good recommendations. My two young kids also loved the food and the environment.
St John hasn’t faltered over the past decade I’ve been going and food balances modern takes with traditional cuts. Excellent bar area too if you’re looking for a glass of wine and some nibbles
Great setting to try offal dishes for the first time. Impeccable service and good use of their bakery in the menu too. Bone marrow was a real hit and the pudding menu is not to be missed
Brilliant meal. Every dish tasted fresh and was prepared perfectly. Do not forget to also order the Welsh Rarebit side dish, which absolutely shines. The environment here is best described as “smart casual” - with no air of pretentiousness, just good food and conversation. Highly recommended.
Super great. Fancy Michelin star, but confident enough to keep things simple and unpretentious. Excellent knowledgeable service, straight up good food without the frippery posh joints often have and good value for money. The bar looked good, and next time bar snacks would be my go to.
It was my third time here over several years and I wasnt disappointed. Consistency is not easy when youve been running for such a long time but somehow the St. Johns crew have not only survived 2 years of pandemic but also kept the high quality standards their customers where and are used to. Ingredients and service where absolutely on point. I will single out the calfs liver, cooked to absolute perfection. Thank you
Absolutely stunning restaurant. Recommended by a friend. Everything was excellent. I only wish I could stay and drink longer after close.
St John is situated in a very stripped down white room with open kitchen at the back. We had excellent brown crab on toast followed by lamb sweetbreads and middlewhite pork chop. The service was friendly helpful and knowledgeable about the dishes and wines. If you ever see the slow cooked pork cheek salad on the menu, go for it!
Just the best. Never disappoints stunning food and lovely staff one if my favourite restaurants I have been going here For years !!
The best British food. Simple, tasty and in an enchanting place.
One of the best meals Ive had in London. Everything was perfectly balanced, you could taste the quality of the ingredients, nothing overpowered anything else. Relaxed atmosphere and casual environment, excellent wine list and very well made cocktails (great Manhattan). Overall we were fed and watered for a very reasonable amount. Excellent value for money for a meal of this quality. Staff were attentive and lovely. Recommended.
Fantastic food, service and lovely staff. A bit pricey but well worth it. Have to book weeks in advance but despite the high demand there is ample space between tables and diners are not crammed in.
Came here for a work dinner, had the bone marrow, crab, radish, roast beef, crispy pig check, several desserts and amazing Negronis!!!! Great service , fun atmosphere. Highly recommend
Such a lovely discovery!!! While did not have a reservation, we were able to request a table for two and just have a glass of wine while we waited. It want much faster than expected. The food is awesome! We had the bone marrow (so tasty I forgot to photograph it). My wife had the fish (I forget whichand I had the lamb sweetbreads. The bread is phenomenal, the wine selection is eclectic and fun to explore. The staff are amazingly. What can I say…I love this place.
Will definitely come back. Love their bread and butter & mussels cucumber and dill 😍 nice and relaxing atmosphere. Simple food but tastes amazing
My love affair with St John continues & this is the original. Mussel salad just perfect, then a garlicky, soft as butter, lamb. I had to behave myself with the Wine list. So easy to get to Farringdon now the Elizabeth Line is open. What a way to start the weekend.
Outstanding!Had the Bone Marrow, White Chop and Double-baked chocolate cake. Honestly some of the best Ive ever had.
Great spot for lunch, especially if you’re looking for low carb options. The dishes are interesting and elevate simple ingredients to new levels. Service and wine list good. The ambience was a bit stale (quiet no musicand they ran out of sparkling water otherwise five stars.
We had high expectations for this restaurant , unfortunately we weren’t a fan . Could just be a mismatch of our palette and the restaurant offerings . Favourite dish were the potatoes and we were so disappointed that we didn’t order dessert .
Fantastic destination for meat lovers looking for delights more than steak. We had the classic bone marrow, ox tongue, lamb liver and grilled white middle pork.Bone marrow was interesting appetiser. It was fun to dig out from the bone, spread on the toasted bread and season with white salt and garnish with seasoned parsley. The lamb liver was impressive as it was well cooked with hints of sweetness.Grilled pork was just classic good, perfect for kids.Ox tongue was slightly over cooked, but very enjoyable. My 5 year old son enjoyed all the dishes. That is how well they cooked so anyone with desire for small adventure could enjoy. For drink we got St. Johns rouge and St. John Lager, which were great complement for meaty dishes. We had rubab eaton mess, chocolate cake, and Madeleine for desert. I would order more deserts if I had more capacity in the stomach.
Not pretentious looking but amazing food. You definitely try things you’d not try somewhere else, and you love it!Their wine is also amazing and fair priced .
Great spot- well worth the hype. Food was delicious and service excellent. A unique place to eat, not pretentious and also has a good bar area to grab a beer.
Eating here was an incredible experience start to finish! The waiter was very knowledgeable, friendly, and professional, and you can tell that everyone working there and eating there has a true love of good food. Very unassuming and understated atmosphere when you enter, but as soon as the service started, it was extremely clear that this was going to be a special meal. Will absolutely be returning with others next time I visit London. Try the bone marrow! Just do it!
Great restaurant, bit of an institution. I’ve eaten in the restaurant and the bar area - both excellent experiences. The food is top notch, rich, tasty. Well portioned, impressively good value. The service is attentive, friendly, unassuming. Overall it’s just a really good experience here if you want a high quality meal without pretension. I look forward to my next visit.
bold flavours, hearty portions, professional service. a great culinary experience from beginning to end
Enjoyable evening having a pint before going into the restaurant for dinner. Lovely British ingredients and dishes, prepared to a high standard. Solid.
White walls and white tablecloths with coat hooks covering the walls gives a relaxed atmosphere. Food of incredible quality. You can tell their chefs are proud of their ingredients. They really let each element shine through and they are served without over the top plating. The staff are also relaxed and very welcoming. There is no pretentiousness about the place, just good food and great wine. The places buzzes with chatter, because thats what good food does. It brings people together.
This might be one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at in the world. The flavors that they are getting out of the food is just incredible. They give St John in London a run for their money as top restaurants in the city.Highly recommend sitting at the counter so that you can watch the chefs make your food, and you might even have some interesting conversation with them.If youre in London then you need to visit Manteca. You will want to at least order the bread appetizer, mussels, and one or two pastas.
Might have chosen the wrong main… took the star off but definitely will update when I return. The eel was must to be desired, however the rest of the meal was outstanding. The bone marrow- so tasty. The tongue fab. Desserts great.
St. JOHN will always be in my Top 5 restaurants and spending a cracking Burns night there sharing a wonderful haggis reconfirmed that. Brilliant, fresh ingredients cooked to perfection, outstanding service and an inimitable vibe that makes every lunch or dinner there a guaranteed treat. Fergus and team, thank you again!
Liver so good I actually blacked out lost consciousness collapsed on the floor.Thank you so much to Tjasa (name on the receipt?for making sure I didnt die.
Appetisers and desserts were cooked in a classic way, relatively faultless; but the mallard for the main course was way underdone - blood was constantly seeping out and I couldn’t finish the dish due to the strong unpleasant flavours on palate. No one seemed to have noticed the dish was half uneaten and nobody asked why, which is pretty unusual in a restaurant of this level and reputation. Very disappointed and would not be coming back
This was our second visit, if youre looking for a fussy dining experience this is not it. The service is attentive but not overbearing. The focus is all on the food and the beef pie for two was exceptional, though with sides it could easily feed three people. The rarebit is delicious so we had to order it again. My only regret is not having space for dessert as I hear these are excellent, alas, next time!
Favourite restaurant experience in London. Great feel in the place, staff are excellent and the food is incredible. It’s the type of menu that would put some people off but I’ve been numerous times and everything I’ve tried was sensational. Always go for- Bone marrow- Welsh rarebit- Crispy gooseOrder one of the wines they make with Boulevard Napoléon and then come back for breakfast the next morning 😍
Dang. This place is perfect. Food, staff, wine… what else can you ask for? Menu changes so they always keep things interesting.
Low key Michelin starred restaurant - very affordable - and the food is incredible. They use a lot of offal, and really bring out British fayre. Really good experience - one of my favourite restaurants in London. Definitely recommend trying the Rarebit as a side if you can manage it, and save space for a desert because although simple, theyre full of flavour and in some cases come straight from the bakery.
Hands down, my favorite restaurant in London and my kind of starred restaurant too: 1The food: the best ingredients, beautifully cooked, simply plated, generous portions, you will be left speechless as the flavors built in your mouth 2The vibe: easy going, absolutely informal and with a welcoming eat well & feel good ambiance 3The crew: the most knowledgeable front-house staff on top of seasonal specials, cooking methods and recommendations 4The bloody mary: a 10/10 spicy, with fresh horseradish and no silly frou-frou-frou garnishes. The things that dreams (of good tablesare made of.
First time at St john and very impressed. Love the industrial styling of the dining room and the general appearance of the place. Wait staff really friendly and helpful. We took out own wine so cant comment on it but list was extensive and looked good. Food very nice... highlights for us were the faggots, the mutton, rarebit, and bone marrow. Liver was a bit overcooked and the tripe wasnt very nice but that didnt really matter. Make sure you save room for dessert!! Madelines excellent as was the pavlova. Highly recommended for an unusual informal take on michelin dining. Will return.
Service is great! The beef tongue tastes good. The veg in the steak dish is good. The eel is too salty, can’t really taste the original taste from the fish itself. Over all it’s ok, not amazing to how much it costs.
Slightly lost for words about my evening here.Food was absolutely outstanding, worked my way through most of the incredible white wines - there are loads served by the glass.Service was lovely and atmosphere was perfect.Especially enjoyed the pig skin with radish and roasted shallots, the blood cake, and youve got to have the Welsh Rarebit.Cant recommend this place enough, everything was excellent value for money too.
