441 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10024, United States, New York City
Low-key eatery & bar with TVs, 2 floors & a modern American & Irish menu plus a few outdoor seats.
Awesome service and food, too much tasty!!!
Great atmosphere. Great Guinness pour and a great shepherd pie. Owen at the bar is the man. Very quaint and great food and serviceUpdate. 9/23/22 Back again. Had the burger. Perfectly cooked. Juicy and the bun was soft and the fries were crispy on The outside and soft inside.Pint of Guinness was the perfect amount of nitrogen and perfect temperature.
Food was great. Drinks, amazing!!
Friendly staff, great bar food (try the fried pickles or curry fries), and a mix of regulars and visitors, the Gate always provides for a good time. Come for a casual drink on the weekend, or come to watch a game on the TVs, the Gate is your friendly neighborhood bar in a great location.
Best neighborhood bar on The Upper West Side.
I’ve been to this place twice and had the turkey sandwich both times, it’s incredible. I would never normally order something so boring but it’s excellent.
Love it here. Favorite bar in the upper west side. Solid chicken pot pie. Great service. A fun spot for betting on horse races. 🐎🐎
Such a great an authentic place to have a very cold Guinness, couple of minutes walk from Central Park
Had a wonderful bowl of onion soup and curry fries!
The food services and drinks are great here
Great, welcoming service and a very nice atmosphere that lead to a pleasant time to enjoy your cold Guinness and Shepherds Pie (highly recommended!).
Its great when you can see over 20 different types of Irish whiskey. I got a drink that was so strong Im still feeling it today.
Totally recommend this place if you are up to soulful food and nice Guinness stout. I couldn’t try the fish and chips but next time I visit NY , I will definitely revisit !! ♥️
We all know that Irish pubs are a dime a dozen in Manhattan but this one stands out for the quality of the food and the service. We have eaten here several times and have always been welcomed with good timely service. There is a standard menu but also a chalkboard of specials every day. The craft beer selection is small but provides enough selection to find something youd like. The ambience is pretty typical for an Irish pub.
Fantastic service, great prices and comfortable atmosphere
Nice place to hide from the busy city and have brunch in a quiet spot and enjoy the your food with the city views. Chicken quesadilla was great!
Plenty of Irish pubs in the city, but only one place to get this quality of fish and chips and beef stew! It’s so right! Outdoor / indoor excellent Guinness and great service!
St Patricks Day busy and a LIMITED menu. Corned beef on rye, no cabbage, no cheese. Just corned beef with a side of Ruffles chips. The corned beef was unseasoned and a bit tough. Im wishing that Id cancelled my to-go. Ill be cooking tonight, anyway.
Wonderful atmosphere great place for some food and drinks with friends. The staff couldnt be more welcoming.
Best bar in the UWS, owned and operated by genuine people. Serves a mean Guinness and excellent food. Cant go wrong!
Visiting NYC for family and always love to see Irish pubs, so I insisted we eat here for our first night in the city. It was a lot of food and sooo delicious! Worth the money, cheaper if you pass on any drinks.
Great neighborhood bar with friendly bartenders, generous pours and tasty snacks. Haven’t tried the full meals yet but they look tasty. Excellent place for a relatively quiet late afternoon or early evening drink.
I want to express my absolute gratitude to the staff. Dan, Lisa, Kevin and Emily. They were professional, courteous and just a real pleasure . These folks are a tremendous attribute to your establishment. I will definitely be back… they made my week in James Island, Folly Beach an absolutely joy ☘️☘️☘️ Thank you , MarkP
Had a high top near the window to people watch. Chicken pot pie was so comforting as well as my companys fish n chips and breakfast brunch meals. Cant miss here.
One of my UWS go-to’s for friendly chill pub atmosphere. Good people, great food, full bar! I love the Turkey burger & sweet potato fries!
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!! STAFF WAS FRIENDLY, WELCOMING, REALLY MADE ME FEEL COMFORTABLE. I WAS THE ONLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN IN THE BAR THAT NIGHT AND I FELT VERY WELCOMED. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. THANK YOU TO THAT WONDERFUL STAFF. FOOD WAS GREAT ALSO. 10 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We had a blast! Great drinks menu that fit all tastes and desires PLUS a food selection that met a cold damp nights needs! Lots of hot shepherds pie to warm and meet our growling stomachs!
Waking around the city and our daughter feel asleep so we decided to grab a bite to eat. I left the decision up to my wife and she picked this place. We sat outside and service was excellent. I wish I knew his name because he was on top of everything.I decided to get the wings and nachos and my wife got the fish and chips, Needless to say we left full and happy. My biggest dissatisfaction was that they did not have Irish nachos st a Irish pub. I would be back again.
Ate here yesterday 7/23/22….Amazing everything!!George was our waiter…. Absolutely greatService was perfectFood & Drink excellentThanks George
Didnt expect much, but was disappointed with the drinks: dark and stormy was ok, the negroni tasted like I never tasted before as did the aperol spritz. The brussel sprouts were soggy with oil and too sweet and the mozzarella and tomato salad was also subpar to the many other times I order such at a restaurant. So... I wouldnt go there again
My cousin is very picky and loves this place. My expectations were low, since he just pours ketchup on everything. However, this chicken pot pie was no joke! So good!
Been going here for many years and always for drinks or dinner . Today tried their brunch and must say it was excellent !! The food was awesome and service was very good as always! This could be our new ‘brunch place ‘ as well.
First post-vaccine outing and this place was excellent. Great service, great vibe, and the food was to die for. Really loved the Shepherds Pie!
I really wanna like this place but every time I go, it just doesnt cut it. Great vibe, great location, but you really need to up your game, food-wise. I ordered a turkey burger tonight - hard to screw up? Was so over cooked it was inedible. Last time it was the chicken tenders. Im running out of simple foods to try.
Decent burger. Its rather large. Good atmosphere. Busses turn around the corner though, so outdoor dining isnt necessarily fun.
Had a great time at St. James Gate! The Bangers and Mash plate was the best I’d ever had! Staff were friendly and captivated us with their Irish accents. I do feel their prices were quite high, so not a place I could frequent regularly. But for the occasional go out and splurge, this place won’t disappoint.
The fish and chips was bland but you get a lot of fish. It was clean and the staff was nice. I have been to better Irish pubs. I probably will not go back. My suggestion to them would be to buy new plastic sleeves. The ones with our menus we quit worn out.
Stopped in on a rainy Friday night. Atmosphere was welcoming, not too loud but still lively.Service was great. My mule was perfect and my boyfriends black and tan was beautifully poured!Fried mushrooms come with a delicious garlic sauce. The Sheppards pie and spinach salad were very tasty. The salad was first brought out with craisins that were not on the menu/description but the waitress quickly brought me another without them.Would definitely go back. There is a nice loft area that looked perfect for a group dinner.
Friendly staff, good beer, and top 3 shepherd’s pie I’ve ever had. Well worth the stop. It’s a great little spot to enjoy a beer and food. Don’t be in a hurry, just come and enjoy.
Good sports bar. Some beer references on the menu were not available. The hamburger was good though!
Great spot to go and get some bites and wine. I wasnt disappointed at all. Server was so helpful when I asked for suggestions for wine. I had a great experience with my friend.
Best shepherds pie in NYC, hands down. If you want delicious Irish food (or delicious anythingcome here. You will not be disappointed. Though their vodka sodas taste a little herbal..
There are about a half dozen Irish (or Irish-themedpubs in the area. I liked St James Gate best, just has a nice pub feel, good service, relaxed vibe and somewhat affable clientele. Plus over the weekend of St Patricks day (SundayI could always find a spot to slide into even though there was always a pretty good crowd. Nice pint of Guinness.
Nice local Irish pub, we received the greeting we should have, two foreigners from Long Island, stumbling around from pub to pub encountering only people half our age. Paul, owner/bartender, was quippy, lively, and friendly. one of the best Guinness pints Ive had. We meshed right into this regular haunt and were, for better or for worse, chatted up by the locals. Paul, beyond being charming and funny, took very good care of us. We will be back, Paul! Thank you!
Great Irish PUB! Excellent food with outstanding staff! Great atmosphere and plenty of TVs to watch the game. Not overly loud and not too crowded - clean and inviting! Thoroughly enjoyable and would highly recommend!!
Food isnt bad at all especially for the price.I went here with some friends for dinner and drinks and ordered the meatloaf. Gotta say it was quite tasty. And Im not really a fan of meatloaf. They serve a really solid Guinness which says alot for pubs in the states. Nothing beats Irish pubs in Ireland for Guinness but this place is good.Place is owned by a cool blond lady in her 40s I believe and she runs this place amazingly. Boss lady is no joke. Makes all her guests feel at home. But we had the best waistress Leah. Her knowledge of liquors, wines, and the intricacies of their menu is spot on. She wasnt annoying at all, made sure she was always attentive without being overbearing and was completely cool with how all 8 of us wanted to handle the bill at the end.Im definitely coming back here. If you want a good spot to watch sports, and drink a pint of good Guinness, then come to St James Gate...
Sometimes you just roll into random great spot. 3 of us ordered a bunch and they delivered. Fried mushrooms, pork chop, and fish w chips were notable. Everything was very good. The 3 of us had no complaints nor any ideas for improvement. Solid spot. Will do back!
Not much of a beer selection. Food not great.
Cant go wrong here. The Irish Breakfast is great, salads made to order. A classic upper west side eatery. Nice atmosphere. If you can, sit upstairs.
A really top class Irish pub. The Guinness is always as it should be (a result of the volume they pour every day!and the fish and chips I ate was generously proportioned and quite delicious.A great atmosphere for watching sports or having an informal night out. Super staff, always welcoming and friendly... genuine Irish charm!
