Worth of visiting. Interesting sacral building with a lot of beautiful pieces of art. Nice view from the hill. After visiting you can check local specials like porketta - sandwich with cooked pork or local pralines.

Beautiful church. The tomb of St Francis of Assisi is here. Alas, no camera allow in the church. Get yourself a tour guide, so much to take in within the church eg the old & new St Damian crucifix, etc The back stories of pilgrims walked up the hill in the old days will sign post you to a church located at the bottom of the hill and not too far away where St Francis died. Pilgrims may be delighted to know that the remains of ST CLAIRE and BL CARLO ACUTIS are also in Assisi. Take a wander around the town and enjoy the beautiful streets at a leisurely pace.

Worth a visit if I’m Cortona and area. Wouldn’t say it’s worth driving from further in Tuscany unless there is meaning for you in site on a spiritual level.

Amazing Basilica, with the tombs of St. Francis and his companions in the crypt, beautiful frescoes in the lower and upper basilicas. I also love the wood inlay choir stalls in the upper basilica.

We enjoyed walking the streets of the little village of Assisi.Assisi was the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in 1208.Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was where St. Francis was born and died. The Basilica consists of an upper and lower sanctuary, where St. Francis is buried. The church is decorated with gorgeous geometric designs, frescoes painted in many colors, some with gold stars on a blue painted background. The best is to hire a private guide, and I recommend this, to understand the historical significance of this holy site, but I used my phone to get the right info.

This is the heart of Assisi, and the three churches together with the cloister are all masterpieces. You need to be well prepared or take a guide to fully understand the importance of the artwork. And of the religious importance. The middle church is clearly the most important due to tue frescoes from Giotto, even though Francis is buried in the lowest.

A tranquil beautiful place. The building was quite overwhelming in its quiet magnificence. So disappointed not to be able to take photos but totally understood. The ceilings around the altar are so breathtaking in their beauty. The architecture and different painted scenes are complex and overwhelming in the skill seen. Some of the best I have witnessed in my journey to Rome and Assissi. Italys architectural gifts are blessed. The crypt where the remains of St Francis lies is small well lit staffed and busy. There are pews to rest upon to enjoy moments of quiet reflection and candles can be purchased which are lit after ones departure. The views from outside the Basilica are far reaching and splendid. A place to hold in the heart.

This church was a wonder to visit. We visited for about 45 minutes, saw the tomb as well, and felt that that was ample time, though some could dedicate hours to admire all of the murals plastered all over the walls and ceilings - so much fine detail it’s unreal. No pictures were allowed inside but it was free to enter.

Such a holy and magnificent cathedral to visit. This was one of the most emotional visits. You can feel the presence of the saints in this cathedral. You feel safe and peaceful. It’s full of valuable objects from the ancient times.I wished that we all could be like Saint Francesco!

Cant take pictures inside so I had to take a few on the sly so you dont have to. Beware of the monks which have many eyes and will catch you. My grandma said that the cobalt blue of the giotto frescos is not as fresh as it was when it was restored after the earthquake but such is life!

The Basilica is magnificent... a must-see when coming to Assisi of course. The frescoes, the carvings, individual chapels, all thd details... fascinating. Visitors should remember to dress appropriately: no short shorts or mini skirts and tank tops... you will be required to purchase a wrap.

Amazing church with amazingly detailed audio guide. Was just a little lost on which pillar they were referring to but once you get the hang of it, it was great. Mass was also located in a quiet corner so you dont get disturbed by the tour groups visiting.

This is stunningly impressive. As an animal lover less so as no dogs allowed. The size and Deco is inspiring. Had to go round separately as one of us had to wait outside with the dogs. To the organisers we and probably most would have liked a blessing for our dogs. We would have paid for one.

A beautiful church with an interesting history. It was built in the 13th century on a hill where death sentences were carried out, known as Hells Hill. Later the name was changed to Paradise Hill (after the canonization of St. Francis). Here is the tomb of St. Francis. When visiting the basilica, it is worth strolling the streets of Assisi. However, only 8 km away (approx. 20 minutes by carthere is another Basilica with an atmospheric, tiny church inside, rebuilt by St. Francis.

Beautiful church with fascinating paintings on the wall and ceiling. Of course Assisi is on the mountain so it is a bit difficult to reach it, bit this is standard in Umbria. If your guidebook says it is small city (as my doesthen dont trust, you need couple of hours to visit few churches, forum Romanum and walk through beautiful streets.

Church used to be an extraordinary example of medieval Italian architecture, but it never recovered from recent earthquake that made parts of Basilica crash. Frescoes inside, especially in upper basilica, are to a large extent damaged beyond repair. Lower basilica is in better shape, though.A few of remaining frescoes are by Giotto himself, most by his followers (of lesser qualityand some by Cimabue (including saints portrait).

How can you review such a marvel!? You can simply walk in with deference and be admired. One of the hearts of Italian art, history and culture. A must-see not only for Umbria but for the whole of Italy, a necessary masterpiece for anyone who wants to fully understand the Italian soul and spirituality.

You can feel history here. Ive learned a lot about San Francesco. The hike from the parking lot Porta Nuova is about 30 minutes so take your time. Dont miss the crypt with the grave of San Francesco. Due to Covid there are still not many tourists around. I liked the ceiling painting of the upper Basilika. There are even shops to purchase merchandise. A must when you are in Assisi.

Beautifully decorated and maintained church that’s split into the upper and lower sections. The lower section where the body of Saint Francesco was buried, no photography allowed. The location of the church elevated among its surrounding is super instagrammable. The frescoes on the walls are partially restored snd tells the stories of the Saint during his life devoted the the church. To catch an amazing birds eye view of the church among the hilly surrounding, be sure to visit the Roca Maggiore during sunset.

Worth the visit! If you are in Asisi, you definitely have to come to this Basilica. Not only the inside of the Basilica is pretty, but the view outside is amazing! It was foggy when we were there, so we could not get the scenic view, but even if its covered with fog, its still amazing.Definitely will come again to visit whenever i am in Asisi.

Woohoo! If you are into architecture, this is a dream come true. Feeling like you got dropped into Assassins Creed, you will run up and down hills and staircases, half expecting to meet veiled villains and shank wielding thieves. In reality, people are really nice here. There are a lot of hills, so the movement challenged person may not be to jazzed about it. But truly, it is a building delight.

I loved it! It is a multiple level church - free entry. There’s also a museum in the back and a huge gift shop. You can see Francis’ burial spot and a lot of mice frescoes in the upper level. I highly recommend and would visit again!

Almost every church in Italy is a work of art. This basilica was very beautifully restored. It has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. This basilica is also one of the most important venues of Christian pilgrimage. Pilgrims come here from all over the world to pray for a couple of hours or more, then fly/travel back home. This basilica was also the site where various religions (about 200 I thinkgathered, upon the invitation of the Pope, to pray for world peace. As is at the Sistine Chapel, wear clothes you would normally wear going to church. Likewise, taking photos is not allowed as it damages the wall frescos. As the name of the basilica implies, this was built in commemoration of Saint Francis of Assisi. We got to see and pray at his tomb which is located underneath the basilica. This place brings good memories of younger years where I learned about Saint Francis missionary work and teachings at the Jesuit school I attended back then.

Saint Francis Bascilica is absolutely beautiful. Great liturgies, lots of times for confession, the paintings are spectacular. There is an upper and lower church, below the lower church is the tomb of Saint Francis, opens at 6am to go pray. Join the friars for morning prayer at 630, mass at 715 on weekdays. The gift shop is very reasonable and has a big selection.

Very beautiful and interesting. We had a tour guide when we where here which I would definitely recommend so you can get the story of the city and Francis of Assisi. Even if you arent religious, his story is fascinating and inspiring. The artwork in the church is beautiful and interesting. The views from outside of the surrounding country are beautiful.

A must to visit. Because of the thunderstorms, the place was pretty much empty, and it was very easy to visit. Entrance is free, but you cant take pictures inside. The frescos inside are absolutely beautiful and this is a very impressive place. The medieval city around the Basilica is very well preserved, but because of the rain, we decided not to explore the city.Theres actually two Churches built one on top of the other, and in the smaller one, you can go down in the crypt a see were San Francesco is buried with his first followers.

Beautiful place to visit and rich with history. We had a guide which was very good. If I had more time there are more churches to visit. Beautiful views from the top. Be sure to visit the top and bottom church. You make a difference donation before you enter. There are certain days when mass is held however I am not sure of the days.

Francis described her as "more noble, wealthier, and more beautiful than you have ever seen." The description captures in every detail the then-blossoming and marriageable young woman of rank who, in time, would give her life to Francis. That is, Clare of Assisi.Religious or not this is a special place and from the Dalai LamaThis is my simple religion:There is no need for temples; No need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; The philosophy is kindness! If you have got this far in the review… thanks….
