Jerusalem, Jerusalem
Restored Romanesque church built by the Crusaders in 1138 & sought out by choirs for its acoustics.
A special holy place !!
Just no words, impressive and mesmerising. The crown there is a mystery, no information about who it belonged to
The best church to visit in Jerusalem. You need to walk about 1/2 mile from the entrance to get there.
The acoustics are amazing. Two different groups of pilgrims entered and sang prayers of praise that echoed marvelously throughout the church. This is the site where Mary, the mother of Jesus, was born.At this site Jesus performed the miracle of restoring mobility to a paralyzed man.
Christian Catholic church. Beautiful sanctuary and interesting archeology.
Beautiful Crusdaer church with incredible acoustics right next to the Pools of Bethesda. Wonderful place to pray for loved ones fighting illness.
There are very interesting guide talksat this Church which is at the start ofthe Via Dolorosa believed to be the paththat Jesus walked to his way to hisCrucifixion
French church in Jerusalem. Place where Jesus told a man "rise and walk".
Beautiful church. Light a candle for all Grandmothers. Test the amazing acoustics in the church. Enjoy the peaceful santuary.
The Roman Catholic church, located at the start of Via Dolorosa in the Old City’s Muslim Quarter, was offered by the Ottoman Empire to France in 1856. It is one of four French territories in Jerusalem. In 1856, in gratitude for French support during the Crimean War, the Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I presented it to Napoleon III. It was subsequently restored, but the majority of what remains today is original. The French government claims St. Anne belongs to the French government. Since 1878, it has been administered by the Missionaries of Africa, a catholic order, commonly called "The White Fathers", for the colour of their robes. Between 1882 and 1946, the site housed a seminar for the training of Greek-Catholic priests.
Nice church and you can see some ruins, this place is said the place where maria was borne.
Church and monastery to commemorate birthplace of Holy Mary. Adjacent to church area is interesting excavation site to give you an idea how it looked in Jesus times. One of the few churches that hasnt been destroyed by Muslim invaders thanks to the table stone inserted above church entry, praising Salahadin. Muslims converted it into school for boys until it was again recovered by Christians.
Amazing acoustics and experience. Our church group started to sing worship music and were joined by other believers from other lands!!!
Absolutely fantastic visit to birthplace of Mary, mother of Jesus. Make sure to go down the tight stairs as well, to see the rooms below and altar in bottom cave. Must See Location
One of my favorite spots in Jerusalem , it feels very biblical by the pools, then the St Anne’s church is fabulous - it has great acoustics and the priests loved it when my group would go to sing there. Very kind people, lovely place.
This is the place where Mary the mother of Jesus was born and the name of it was after Mary’s mother Anna. It is next to the place where Jesus healed a man that was sick for thirty years.
Lovely church where groups are encouraged to sing due to the excellent acoustics.
Quiet solemn sanctuary. All the previous comments about the acoustics are true. Intriguing Bethesda pools adjacent. Incredible engineering by the historical architects.
Excellent acoustics... theyll let you sing... but dont chatter chatter
People come to sing and play music. The acoustics are incredible. Coming from Via Dolorosa, on the left, you have good, fresh pomegranate juice, big cup for 10 shekels.
Great site. Costs 10 shekels per adult to visit. Only the entry way and church are handicap accessible. This place is commemorates the birthplace of Mary where the church is and also has the excavated ruins of the Bethesda Pools where Jesus healed the paralyzed guy who had been waiting for 38 years to get in the pool when the water were stirred by angels and no one would help him in.
Such a great visit, and its been an honour to sing in this great church. Thank You Lord for all Your Bless for me so I can visit this Great Church
Beautiful historical place with biblical history... The place where St. Annes (Marys motherchurch was built and there which Mary was laid and died... We saw the remains of the old City of Jerusalem and the ancient pathway of Jerusalem.
Nice church, but there is nothing else to see. Gardeners are very friendly and they like to talk about local tradition and plants.
Beautiful Church at Bethesda Pool where Jesus healed the sick. 10 sheckel entrance fee. Clean bathrooms. You can go to the basement of the Church to see shrines. The archeological area covers several periods, including Herod of Jesustime. A pagan pool at the time, it shows the power of Jesus to heal on the Sabbath those of different faiths. Well worth a trip and plan to send about 30 minutes.
Groups from all over the world come here on the mornings to sing in a chapel with wonderful acoustics. A good place to rest and listen while exploring the old city of Jerusalem.
A great place that is so many important things together. The church is unique romanesque, simple and yet connects you to the middle ages. Archeological layers of a few thousand years.clean and pretty.
Very nice church. Beautiful Roman ruins where Jesus healed the lame man
Mother of virgen Mary. One of the most beautiful church
Beautifully elegant church understated by its simplicity in decoration. Pools are fine historic sites.
Birth place of St Mary. Well kept and beautiful church
Sound of singing in that church was amazing! We just sang a tune to the amazement of onlookers.
Great acoustics and historical site
The best church in the whole place. It is simplistic and the acoustics is outstanding. When we were there, there was a choir singing and it was like angels singing. The location is next to the pools of Bethesda. These actually look authentic and you can almost see how it works have been. It is in a nice quiet part of the city also. I highly recommend this place to be on the visit list.
We arrived here from Lion Gate on our way to Via Dolorosa Way of the cross. Poof Bethesda is situated just in front with a beautiful garden in the courtyard. The church is small but beautiful. We sang hymns here and they sounded very good . Our guide told us Virgin Marys parents Joachim and Anne had lived here.
What a beautiful place. As we were singing amazing Grace in English one group joined in singing amazing Grace in an another language. An amazing acoustical wonder!
Traditional church but pleasant. Several people take the opportunity to sing hymns from the front. Basement is for visiting but not very convincing. Nice area with interesting ruins nearby.
Wonderful statue to the left as you enter of Saint Anne teaching her daughter St Mary .scripture and as the priest, Father James Smyth said, St Mary would teach her son, Jesus.
We traveled to our Holy Land, The State of Israel, visiting many importnat historical places during our journey of faith.Church of St. Anne is located at the start of the Via Dolorosa, near the Lion’s Gate & churches of the Flagellation & Condemnation, in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem. It is erected near the remains of an earlier Byzantine basilica & over the site of a grotto believed by the Crusaders to be the birthplace of Anne, the mother of Mary.It was completed in 1138 by Arda, widow of Baldwin I, 1st titled king of Jerusalem.Unlike many other Crusader churches, St. Annes was not destroyed by the Mamelukes who captured the Holy Land in the 12th century.During the Muslim rule of Palestine, Christian pilgrims were only permitted inside the grotto after paying a fee. Currently St. Anne belongs to the French government & is administered by the White Fathers, an order of the Catholic Church named for the color of their robes. One of the photos was taken of the book by the entrance, where visitor get to sign, and write a message: Mother, Let there be Peace on Earth!
A beautiful church. If you sing , please go and sing in this church. This church turns any voice into music. It is known to have best acoustics . Run by French prisets. However entry fee of ILS 20 is applicable.
St. Annes (NIS 10 per adultis a historical church in the Muslim Quarter off El-Ghazali Square in the Old City. There are several interesting things to see within the grounds of St. Annes, making this a nice place to see between Temple Mount and Via Delorosa trail. Opening hours are 8-12pm and 2-6pm daily. Here you find a Crusader church built in the early 12th century upon the grounds believed to be where the Virgin Marys parents, Anne and Joachim lived. The church interior is large and open, youll likely finding tourist choir groups singing hymns, taking advantage of the good acoustics at St. Annes. There is a small crypt which is where the house of Anne and Joachim was supposedly located. There is a beautiful small garden in the courtyard area at St. Annes that was flush with blooms during our visit in early May. Further, you can see the important archaeological site of the Pool of Bethesda amongst the grounds. You can walk around and through the excavation site, which is also quite nice with spring blooms this time of the year.Overall, we very much enjoyed our 30 minute visit to St. Annes Church. It makes a nice addition to the nearby Via Dolorosa trail. Wed happily return for another visit during future trips to Jerusalem.
The acoustics of the church for singing are rightly famous. It is not so great for the spoken word. The ruins of the Bethesda Pool is fairly impressive and well presented. The grounds and gardens are a lovely respite from surrounding streets of Jerusalem. The White Fathers are very hospitable and knowledgeable hosts.
There is an entrance fee but its worth it. The Cistern were amazing and looks like ruins, The Acoustics at the Church is also well known, try singing there
The Pools of Bethesda of John 5 are well worth the walk to this part of the Old City! Reading John 5 on site allows you to envision the text so clearly and comprehend it in a way you never would have before. The church that is in the same complex has amazing, ancient, natural acoustics. If you, or your group, are musically gifted, take a step inside and sing for those around you!
Birth place of mother Mary, there is a cave at the bottom of the church, a beautiful serene church.
Fantastics acoustics in this church!! Sing your heart out and enjoy!
Amazing building. You need to pay Entrance, but worth while. If you stand in the middle of the church you must sing, especially if you are not alone. The voices are multiplied. Really fun - if you have to make up a melody do it. This old crusader building was saved because it was used by the Muslims. Traditional it is the birthplace Mary. Nearby the pool of Bethesda. An amazing site and known for Christians as the place were Jesus healed. Sick came there with the hope to be healed. (Joh 5,2-5)The monks are very friendly, and you will maybe end up to sit there for one hour just to talk.
Beautiful old church with wonderful acoustics. If you are lucky, one of the visiting groups might break into song while you are there. It is an amazing experience.
Simply beautiful both the church with its acoustics, its interesting archaeology, gardens, solitude , cleanliness and its staff. A Holy Site as it should be.Joe Zias (guide)
St. Anne Monastery is a beautiful and COMPLETE Romansque style church from Crusaders times that is still standing.Next to it, the remains of big pools from the 1st century CE can be see. These are quite likely the "Pools of Bethesdah" mentioned in John 5 as a site where Jesus performed a miracle!
