MoreThe Cathedral of St. Brendan, Loughrea, is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Clonfert. Though designed in neo-gothic style, it arguably houses the most extensive collection of arts and crafts and Celtic Revival artifacts of any single building in Ireland. Its most noteworthy feature is the extensive collection of stained glass windows by the Dublin-based An Túr Gloine studio. There are also twenty-four embroidered banners, mostly depicting Irish saints as well as vestments by the Dun Emer Guild. Sculptors represented are John Hughes (sculptor) and Michael Shortall, and the architect William Alphonsus Scott also contributed designs for metalwork and woodwork. The foundation stone was laid on 10 October 1897 and the structure was completed in 1902; most of the interior features date from the first decade on the twentieth century with the exception of the stained glass windows which continued to be commissioned up until the 1950s.
MoreHistorical beautiful Cathedral
Wonderful stained glass windows
So loved this beautiful cathedral
St.Brendan Cathedral Loughrea - amazingly beautiful design and magnificent stained glass windows.
MoreSome amazing stain glassed windows
It was lovely which was better I popped into the new hungry bookworm which reopened right beside the cathedral and I highly recommended you visit the cathedral and visit the hungry book work for a nice meal or a snack
MoreBeautiful example of early 20th century Irish religious architecture. With its cruciform plan, vaulted ceilings and magnificent stained glass windows along with flying buttresses on the exterior this gothic style cathedral is a must see if youre visiting Loughrea. Situated on the shores of the lake with beautiful gardens which are traversed by the Dunkellen river. The gardens are even more beautiful now since the 8ft wall facing the lake has been reduced in height to facilitate the breathtaking view of the Loughrea lake and the Slieve Aughty mountains once more. There is also a museum with many priceless religious artefacts on display. Enjoy the visit!

Stately cathedral in provincial town Loughrea. Plentiful art inside, regular Catholic service, free parking on the cathedral grounds. Free admission.
MoreIt was a lovely cathedral to walk around the grounds and inside as well. Names after St. Brendan, the Navigator. Next to it there is a Medieval Town Gate. The history of the area is very interesting.
MoreLovely place, kept well, inside the cathedral is perfectly kept aswell,
It was very cold the day I was there attending a funeral mass.
The stone on the outside of the Cathedral looks very weather beaten and dirty and the presbytery beside it such a well kept well painted building.
MoreAbsolutely Loved this Cathedral. Beautiful old style Church.
A historical Cathedral full of Irish art and culture, with a museum of vestments dating back hundreds of years.
MoreA lovely cathedral with mass said by Monsinure Geretty and hymns wonderfully sang by St. Brendans boys school choir.
MoreLovely well kept cathedral
This cathedral in Loughrea is quite historic. It has a small museum which has the oldest surviving wooden statue in Ireland as well as many other artefacts of religious interest. In Norman times Loughrea was a seat of power inn this area surpassing even bigger Galway in importance at one point in history. The nearby lake still has some Crannógs , artificial islands that bronze age people lived on. The moat that surrounds the medieval town passed by the cathedral.
MoreAn impressive church for a small town, this is the seat of the Diocese of Clonfert, a Norman enclave in south County Galway that is very good at hurling. The Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Brendan, is easily accessed and has some interesting windows in it too, most likely by Richard King
MoreEnjoyed my visit to St Brendans today where I got married in 1972. I took a school friend of mine out for the day & that was one of the top locations for us to visit to show her the Clarke Windows, the lovely furnishings & the many beautiful icons & items that are kept so well in the Cathedral. She was so pleased with her visit. Loved the pulpit, the lights, the altar & the windows of course. She is going back to USA with lovely memories of her visit there. Her comments made me appreciate the building even more if that was possible. Well done to all who keep the Cathedral in such good condition.
