15th-century, covered pedestrian bridge featuring a series of paintings with a death motif.
Spreuer Bridge in Luzern
Description
Historical bridge that is in use today. Worth a visit
Great view
Pro tip: nobody is on it at 7AM on a Sunday.
Walking along the lake in the later afternoon
Amazing view and an amazing bridge rich in history and was happy to stumble upon it!!! Do visit if u get the time
MoreReally nice, gets a bit crowded. You can find some biblical painted scenes on the upper part.
MoreThis 2nd most famous wooden bridge in Luzcern is just located further downstream from The Chapel Bridge. Despite it is not as glamorous as The Chapel Bridge, but it still has the specialities & features that make it worth for a visit.1The paintings under the roof are representing the "dance of death", showing the peoples feelings of death from the medieval period.2On the bridge, you can see a power plant that can generate electricity from the Reusss river current.Highly recommended when you visited Luzcern!
MoreBeautiful wooden bridge.
One of the two traditional bridges crossing the Reuss River, this bridge is constructed out of wood and also features paintings on the roof of the bridge. Youll also get to see how electricity used to be generated using the rivers current, though this bridge is certainly not as famous nor as scenic as the Chapel Bridge.Still, its worth a trip across this bridge (you can do a loop along the river with the two bridgesand admire the history behind this bridge.
MoreBeautiful city, definitely worth a visit. All buildings are completely preserved
Nice place to walk along the water no cost involved
Beautiful bridge in Lucerne! Very interesting seeing how people get into the river from down here and float downstream!
MoreApart from Chapel Bridge, the second covered wooden footbridge over the river Reuss. Built around 1408, it is about 80 meters long. Like Chapel, Spreuer Bridge also have paintings on the roof painted by Caspar Meglinger between 1625 and 1635. The painting represents representing a Dance of Death. This bridge was also a part of the citys fortifications and was destroyed by storm in 1566, and rebuilt in 1568 . The bridge also has a small chapel in the middle, built in 1568.
MoreThe lesser known bridge in Luzern. Has painting panels featuring death and you can get a good photo of the Chapel Bridge and church
MoreAmazing history, culture and experience. Likely the best sight in Lucerne.
This is the lesser famous bridge in Lucerne but it’s still as beautiful at Kapelle bridge. As you walk through the bridge you’ll get the read (in the Germanthe story of dead on the roof of the bridge… beautiful paintings and story (do Google them to find out more 😅and of course the view is stunning….
MoreAnother historic bridge. I enjoyed the trip, I would rate Chapel bridge over this one though. If you are short on time, I would recommend visiting Chapel bridge over this.
MoreSo cool (unless you have arachniphobia)! Seriously, go at night when the bugs are active, and youll see loads of spiders.
MoreI enjoyed this bridge - it is just an interesting landmark in a beautiful city. They have done much to preserve this history and it adds much for the visitor but also, I suspect, for the local citizens who appreciate their history.
MoreThe view is the best I have seen in any bridge! It looks like a drawing.. Magical place!
MoreU get the feel of medieval times with all that water crossing the city of Luzerne. U can also go all the way up to Hotel Chateau Gutsch where u can view the city.
MoreOld and nostalgic bridge, you can walk through and between the flowers if it is warm season.
MoreThe pediments of the Spreuer Bridge contain paintings in the interior triangular frames, which is a feature unique to the wooden bridges of Lucerne. The paintings form a Danse Macabre, known as Totentanz in German, which was created from 1616 to 1637 under the direction of painter Kaspar Meglinger. It is the largest known example of a Totentanz cycle.
MoreBeautifully maintained historic bridge. A place for a quiet and calm evening
Nice bridge to walk over or make pictures. Acces for wheelchairs and at the end/beginning a public restroom.
MoreA beautiful wooden bridge. From here you will get a better view of chapel bridge in background with mount Pilatus.
MoreGreat bridge! To enjoy it best take photos from the bridge after.
Love this place. Awesome view of the city
A beautiful historical bridge that has been so well maintained. Great decor all over the bridge. I feel like I would discover new things every time I cross it.
MoreAmazing historical place with a beautiful view. The bridge is in the heart of Luzern
MoreIts similar to the Chapel bridge but less impressive. Still its a cute and old bridge which is nice to check it out. It leads to the old town.
MoreSmall covered bridge similar to chapel bridge but less impressive. However it is surely a nice attraction to visit in Lucern. The best spot is at the end of the bridge as it goes directly to an old street and buildings
MoreCute bridge. The water under the bridge is very strong here, fascinating to watch.
MoreThis bridge is Less popular than Chapel Bridge, but still well worth a visit. It is located slightly upstream from Chapel Bridge. This bridge is Nicer in some ways as it’s is simpler while still being ornate. Also there are way less tourists that congregate around Chapel Bridge.
MoreLiked this bridge more than the Chapel bridge. Spreuer had more character and authenticity to it.
MoreImpressive wooden bridge in the heart of Luzern, decorated with an array of triangular painted wooden panels all along the ceiling. Very nice walk, free to visit.
MoreIts like the little brother (or sisterof the great old "Kapellbrücke" further up the river right on the mouth of Lake Lucerne. Though this bridge has its special touch and the nearby sitting area along the river makes it worth while the visit while resting for a snack during the warmer Summer weeks.
MoreSmaller version of chapel bridge. It was a lot less crowded in the morning than it was at night. Beautiful artwork on top wooden panels.
MoreHas a nice view of the water dam from Spreuer Bridge!
Interesting artwork and history, it is the smaller covered bridge. Recommend going once in the afternoon for pictures and then the evening for views. Part of a good walk past the weir or needle dam on the Reuss.
More"The oldest wooden bridge in Europe"Well at least that is what our tourist guide told us. I was supper impressed with all the paintings on the ceiling roof and the flowers all over the bridge. We fell in love with the view from the bridge. This bridge is located in Lucerne and it is considered an European jewel. Walking around this town is a whole adventure, there are swans everywhere. These beautiful birds seem to know they are the responsible of one of the most beautiful waltzes of all time.Lucerne is a must stop place, for any visitor.
MoreOne of the most beautiful bridges in on of the beautiful cities in the world.
Beautiful wooden bridge with interesting paintings on "Danse Macabre" theme which were created under direction of a Kaspar Meglinger. Very crouded.
MoreWorth a visit. I think its even prettier then the Kapellbrücke... Less tourist so you can walk and take your time to take a picture.Im glad we walked further then the Kapellbrücke!
MoreThis is an attractive feature of Lucerne which has inspired artists to add various paintings to the roof structure. Well worth a slow walk along this bridge to appreciate these artworks.
MoreA nice historic sight to visit while in Lucerne. Look up in the awnings of the bridge to find very old religious paintings and scenes. The bridge does get very crowded so expect lots of slow walkers.
MoreMany focus on the more well known ‘Chapel Bridge’ but this is our favorite. A bit shorter, it was never touched by fire. The structure and art are all original. It is a little further downstream, away from the action, and has a more romantic feel. It also makes for dramatic sunset pictures due to the rushing water.
MoreHistorical bridge with paintings on every triangular roof truss, truly inspired. The architecture and engineering of the bridge is amazing, as is the crowds all staring up to the roof taking photos. If you need to cross to the other side in a hurry dont walk this bridge.
MoreBeautifully built old bridge. Now the oldest bridge in Lucerne because the original oldest was mostly burned down and replaced.
MoreNot as big but still as nice as Chapel Bridge. There are also a few very very small "waterfalls" which are nice during the day.If you want to get the same effect but not deal with the 1000 other people walking on the bridge then go here.Having done both I would walk through this bridge and look at Chapel Bridge from the outside.
