Spice - The Indian Kitchen - Indian restaurant in Pretoria, South Africa
Your butter chicken guys...I literally drive from the Eastrand to experience your meals, all the way out in PTA. Stay consistent guys, nice one...👌🏿😬
Good Indian food cooked here..I would suggest you order for delivery with Uber eats because they run specials very much during the month. Also, there is sit inside but the space is not that big hence easily filled up to capacity.the food tastes great.. the curries will give you that real Indian taste and feel. Also, you can call in to make a reservation or place your order ahead of time which I strongly recommend to minimize on disappointment incaseof sit downs.
Very good service and delicious meals
Had the cheese and garlic nan (idk if it’s spelt that wayand the spicy calamaris and it’s honestly one of the best dishes I’ve ever had like EVER
Excellent food. Perhaps limited drinks options, but we go for the food.
The food is good, but l wanted lamb breyani and they were out of stock with all lamb products on the menu. If you ask me, they didnt buy lamb as this was on a saterday. Secondly they didnt have conacg and its on their menu.
Excellent place to get some Indian food. Bunny chow and naan bread was great.
Biriyani taste is good.Go for medium spicy 🥵
Absolutely superb quality of food. I highly recommend this restaurant!
Delicious food, quality ingredients and great service!
I have tried Indian food in more than ten countries. This place is officially the worst Indian restaurant I have ever eaten in.I ordered biryani. The rice was soaked with some cheap oil.The spices were not fresh (yes some people can taste the difference). And the worst part was the chicken. Its like they took some left over chicken from last week and took its flesh off and added. It was just disgusting.
Had dinner here before. Cute little place, with really great Indian food. Worth a visit.
It was really nice here. The food is presented remarkably and the portions are more than expected. We had a truely nice dining in experience. The smell inside was nice and spicy. For the technical side:1. Portion for he price was very good and the food was very tasty. ("Medium" hot is quite spicy, Ill relate it to the same "hotness" as Tabasco, not for sensitive tastebuds.)2. Our waiter knew the menu well, was kind and was always available if looking to call him and he also made occasional rounds to make sure we had all we wanted.3. The tables are nice and spacious, seats are cushioned and easy to move.4. It was not busy at the time (+-15h00 on a Tuesday).5. It was clean and wel kept.6. Take-away containers where supplied on request and brought to the table so that we can pack and leave what we wished.7. There are bathrooms next door that belong to the mall and they where clean.I would highly recommend that anyone who loves good portions, spicy and flavourful food come here atleast once!5/5 Stars. Will definately come again to eat another dish and will rate again of I do.
Excellent waiters and superb food but no management or owners present.Try the mint chutney, its a must!
Restaurant is horrific for good tasting authentic food. Both dishes, navrattan korma and chicken Tikka masala were too sweet that it was inedible. The chicken Tikka masala was like a soup and you would be lucky to get enough chicken pieces for one person. If you order take aways or delivery BEWARE of you will end up HANGRY. Preparation of food is to satisfy local non-indian and uneducated palettes in the PTA east vicinity. Read the comments, now many of these locals complain that the Tikka masala is incorrectly prepared? Chicken needs to be grilled in a tandoor and then incorporated with a sauce, not just plain food coloured breast pieces chucked into a gravy. With the unrealistically sweet dishes & cost cutting preparation, I suggest looking for other options.
Needs a little bit of maintenance. The food was great though and affordable. Naan was a little stale and all good needed to be prepared to be much more fresh.
My hubby desperately wanted a bunny chow so we decided to try Spice with UE on the 15/08/21, hubby ordered the lamb curry bunny chow and when we opened it, it initially looked great! Until he strated eating! He maybe had a handful of lamb curry in a half a loaf of bread for R115!!!!!! Was a complete rip off! He also ordered a grape tizer which never came so thats another R30 wasted. I on the other hand ordered the butter chicken curry which tasted delicious but also if I had a breast of chicken on my plate I was lucky! There was more sauce than anything else which costed R120!!Your portion sizes are terrible and not value for money!Dissapointed and wont be ordering from you again unfortunately!
Being an avid curry eater I decided to give this place a try. Ordered the lamb bunny chow to go and was very disappointed with it. I contacted the owner who was swift in taking action to find out from the kitchen why the food was not up to standard. He then messaged me to say that he will remake the order free of charge. I then fetched the fresh order and it was absolutely delicious. He also wanted feedback on the new order to see if I was satisfied. 8 will definitely order again because not only is the food delicious but the customer service was amazing
We recently ordered a Vegetable bunny chow and a Chicken 65. The vegetables were uncooked and there was hardly any gravy. The Chicken 65 was very disappointing. I Paid R70 or R75 for half a breast of chicken as shown in the pic. It was under seasoned and did not smell good. We waited over 50 minutes for this very disappointing meal. I really hope the manager can do something about this because I remember this place being amazing but quality and quantity is lacking recently. Also why is everything sooo SWEET!?
Sad to have to edit a Google review after three years. The restaurant went from fantastic to tragic! The food is no longer up to standard. Chicken is tasteless and dry. Lamb never in stock, and if they do have it, its tough, dry and tasteless. The last two orders were previously frozen with the chicken inedible and drowning in water.
I really disappointed and utterly dissatisfied. We ordered 2x Butter Chicken for R119 and received the SMALLEST tub of curry with 3/4 medallions of WHITE CHICKEN BREAST!We used to love Spice and always told everyone how amazing ypu guys are, but now I wont recommend any one to eat there. We paid R280 for literally Sauce and naan. I bought a WHOLE roasted chicken from Pick and Pay for R60 and I can feed 3 people with seconds. The two tubs wast even enough for my Fiance, and she cant eat alot.I am sorry to say but that meal was a rip-off
PART 1Firstly, the lady on the picture was very rude, the service I got recently was nothing like what I got in the past. THE STAFF NEED TRAINING.I ordered lamb rogan josh and butter chicken to go. The butter chicken was NOT FRESH AND TASTED VERY BAD, the lamb was GOOD though.(PART 2To respond to your response.FIRSTLY, I THINK YOU GOT ME MIXED UP WITH ANOTHER CUSTOMER, PLEASE CORRECT THAT.SECONDLY, I DO NOT USE VULGAR OR BLASPHEMY WHEN ADDRESSING ISSUES, IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW HEATED THE ISSUE AT HAND MAYBE.THIRDLY, I STILL STAND BY EVERYTHING I SAID ON MY PREVIOUSLY.Your service to paying customers needs to improve and training is highly recommended, not just for staff but for you too, precisely for your behaviour (uncalled for and for being a LIAR), YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER.My order of the butter chicken , 3 plain naan breads and the lamb rogan josh was PAID for in CASH ( withdrew the money from an ATM since your card machine was not working). DLastly, please publish the footage on here so it becomes public. Thank you.
We genuinely used to enjoy their vegetable samoosas and potato curry. I am saddened to say, but a few days ago we had a very unpleasant experience there, our veggie samoosas was exchanged for a cheese and corn samoosa, without them telling us (we specifically order them since they are vegan). And they also did not have any potatoes. We went out of our way to get the food we missed and we couldnt get any of it. We also had to wait 35 minutes for 8 samoosas and one curry. It was a little chaos in there. But the man did apologize and offer to refund us. So there is that. Unfortunately we will not be returning, but we will miss what this place once was!
The best indian curry i have ever tasted. Our family will go back every time. The service was excellent and the food....we wanted more, it was delicious
Wonderfull flavors! We ordered a take away on delivery for the first time and: not disappointed. As great as any good meal at the restaurant. Food is always lovely and different, flavoursone. And eating here always reminds me of traveling to foreign countries. . An asset to Lynnwood Ridge in the East of Pretoria. 👌👌👌
This establishment is the one for North Indian Curries. We have tried several in various provinces but this cosy restaurant has both atmosphere and the service is friendly and swift. We relished the following dishes: chicken starters - chicken samoosa [generous filling]; chicken seekh keebab; tandoori chicken; chicken tikka masala; rogan josh; prawn biryani [not oily]; garlic naan; chicken paratha [a bit disappointing - sparse filling - lacked body]. In all, this restaurant is strongly recommended.
Been here a few times, but yesterday was extremely appalling. Took forever to place our orders, drinks took 30 minutes... then food order was placed, and waited for 55 minutes for the food. So we thought well maybe it’s taking long because food will be made from scratch...Eventually our food arrived, in drips and drabs. First they brought a Latcha paratha which was crispy and thin and basically a small naan. The tandoori paneer tikka was nice but everything else was not worth it at all. The vegetarian jalfrezi was SWEET, and we ordered it medium... when inquiring about it, were told butter chicken sauce was used. The dhal makhani needed salt to be edible. The vegetables in the jalfrezi were super random and it wasn’t edible. I asked if they put sugar in it because it was horrible.Considering we were the ONLY patrons in the restaurant at that time (late afternoon). We had to keep calling the waiters. Their phones kept ringing without being answered, so it was just noise of phones ringing. The whole experience was horrible and I feel like we wasted our money at this establishment. There was also no apologies for the terrible service or apologies for food taking forever or why it tasted terrible.Would not recommend at all!
Always great to go back to this small, intimate restaurant with their excellent curries. My personal favourite is the Lamb rogan josh. Give them I try, you wont be sorry!
Ordered Hot, got sweet "so called" curry. Chicken didnt have any salt or flavor. Chicken pieces seemed like they were pre-boiled then dropped into the gravy when the order was received and warmed up. Chicken lacked any depth of flavor due to not being pre-marinated and not cooked in the gravy from the start.
My wife and I actually threw our food away as the "sweet chutney" flavor over powered itWow, that is not curryOK, full disclosure, I am from Durban so I know what curry isI guess this is fine for Pretoria, I kind of knew we were in for trouble when I saw the patrons in the restaurant.Glass of milk with your food anyone ?*Store owner, thank you for the replyNone of what I said above was fabricated, it is just my opinion and we really did throw the food away (except for the meat which was given to our dog)
We arrived at Spice at 18:20 on 5 March. We entered, but no one was there to seat us. We asked 2 ladies behind the reception desk if we may please be seated. One replied "yes, you can sit" and continued not to assist us. We wandered around to find a seat and decided to leave and seek a different Indian restaurant, as it was evident by the lack of greeting or assistance upon entering that service was not going to be good. We were the only people there at the time.
This restaurant never disappoints. Their curries are always delicious and flavourful. You can taste the quality of ingredients. The service is always on point. The decor and ambience here is very soothing and tasteful without being over the top. My favourite Indian restaurant hands down.
We have been meaning to eat here for quite a while now and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was really delicious it was not spicy at all. Just delicious. I cant wait to try out more of their dishes.
The destination for supper tonight was Spice Kitchen. Planned to go there a few months ago, but only had the opportunity to go there tonight. When we got there, we were shown to a vacant table and our waitress brought us something to snack on while we waited for our drinks. For mains, we opted for Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Korma, Butter Chicken and Tandoor Chicken Tikka pieces. Although the curries comes with rice, we ordered naan bread as well. We wanted to order lamb dishes, but unfortunately they were sold out. I was quite impressed with the aroma and flavours of the food. Tasty and tender chicken! Finished off with desserts (pistachio & litchi ice cream and a serving of mango something ice cream). All round good experience and will be back for more!
Decided to try this place after seeing decent reviews on ubereats. I had a mild chicken curry and thought it would be a safe option. Was expecting amazing flavours and a genuine curry. It was rather bland and the raw garlic taste overpowered Everything. Tasted as if the chicken was cooked in sauce for a few minutes. No depth of flavour. Disappointing
I am an ex Capetonian now living in Pretoria. We discovered this lovely Indian restaurant about 3 years ago and have returned there over and over again since then.To this day their service, professionalism and friendliness has always been outstanding. They are not overbearing but give their patrons just the right amount off attention during the course of your meal. The venue is clean and charming and their food is presented in a lovely way. The flavors of their dishes are something to die for... Oh, did I mention that my wife and I am vegan and the rest of the family is not. Well thats no problem for them. they cater for meat eaters as well as for those who dont indulge.Go to Spice - The Indian Kitchen to have your taste-buds scintillated at a reasonable price per head.
I dont often write reviews but I thought it was so unfair that this restaurant has such bad ratings even though they are so fantastic. If youre thinking of going here, dont believe all the negative reviews, or you will truly be missing out on a great food experience. I was there for my birthday last night and the restaurant was so clean and neat. Tables were set so pretty. The service and the food were both so satisfying. The moment we sat down, the waitress brought us some yummy appetizers with so many different sauces and dips - you hardly find restaurants that give free starters anymore so we were totally impressed. They were also so quick with our meals and dessert and everything was so delicious. The waitresses and the managers were so kind as well - they checked up on us a few times during our meal. Honestly, I almost didnt end up going because of some of the bad reviews and Im so glad I decided otherwise. It was totally worth it!
The best butter chicken I have ever had. Would definitely visit again and refer to everyone !
Disappointed and disgusted!!!!After finding two large cockroaches in the bathroom, the manager convinced me it is a mall problem, something about temporary ceilings or what not. After reading previous reviews, I now strongly believe it is his restaurant that is the source of the cockroaches!I also had to wait 45min for the manager to return with the only card machine in the shop. When he arrived, ons of his staff fetched it and told me he just dropped it and went on another delivery. He was however sitting in his car, not wanting to face his customers.I would not recommend this place al all. Its disgusting inside and with service like that form the manager, this place is not going to laat long.
Not a good experience. The service was horrible. Kept having to try find my waiter. While waiting for my order was watching the cockroaches on the wall. Then the food arrived close on R100 for a chicken vindaloo...... with no rice. Asked my waiter for rice and he was genuinely surprised I had asked for that. Portion is small for the price although the flavour wasnt bad. Sadly to have my meal arrive and then have to wait for 7 min for rice after having to ask for something that in my mind should have come with the meal is just not on. This was my first visit and I will not be back.
Consistently getting the heat levels wrong with orders. 2 consecutive orders where the first was ordered mild but was so spicy we could not eat it. This time ordered medium and order was super mild.If you enjoy guessing what will arrive at your door, give them a go!
Good service the waiter was efficient. The starters were good, but the mains were bland - could be my fault as I ordered a mild curry, but it didnt have much taste. My friend who ordered the same dish was in agreement. We also witnessed a cockroach.
Normally good but today it was shocking . We were the only guests in the restaurant. Did not even get a "Hello" when we entered seating us in utter silence. The Roti was dry and crisp, Chicken masala poor, spices were burnt. Service was none existent. Both managers were more concerned about their cell phones and our waiter was clearly the person they sent on errands. With service and quality like this no wonder the restaurant was empty.
The food was absolutely delicious! It’s thoughtfully made, and there’s is a rich variety. When we were there it was slightly understaffed.
Excellent food, definitely the best Indian quinine in the area! Large veriety of vegetarian dishes, which they are very willing to a just to vegan requirements (our family is vegan). Excellent service. Portions and food quality justify the price. As much love goes into take aways as sit-down meals. One of my favourite spots for sure
A real hidden gem. The food is always amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed a wine pairing evening they hosted. Every pairing was a delight. They very obviously take great pride in the quality and flavour of their dishes.
Food was ok,had lamb curry, the lamb tasted ok but the rice was a very small portion, and the flavours not strong in the dish. Was served immediately, but wasnt given napkins which was awkward. The decor is really stylish, but no music so lacking in atmosphere. Overall not the best indian Ive had.
Great ambience, tasty Indian food (inexpensive tooand friendly staff.
Second time Ive given Spice a try and both times Ive been disappointed. First time was via a delivery. My food was very oily and all over the place. My first impression of the restaurant was a fair enough one. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has such a warm environment. Upon arrival it took a few minutes for someone to spot us. He said the restaurant is full, but we could wait for five minutes and he would seat us (I cant understand why he didnt suggest we wait outside and when a table is ready we could move inside). After about 10 minutes we came back and waited again for someone to spot us. We were seated at a pretty small table which was very cramped with decorative items. As a table snack the restaurant gave us the traditional three condiments and this VERY oily deep fried I dont know what. Really wasnt pleasant. We order the butter chicken, chicken Korma, a lamb dish (All mild), Minced lamb naan and a cheese naan. The butter chicken was far too sweet for my liking and I really didnt enjoy it. The chicken Korma was good and s was the lamb dish. Although the food wasnt very Indian for me. The cheese naan was still a little raw inside. The service was really good and the waitress was helpful. We asked for a traditional Indian drink which they said was out of stock.Sorry to say,but there are far better Indian restaurants within close proximity compared to Spice.
Best Indian food in Gauteng and great atmosphere! Loved it!! Only the staff needs some more training. The waiter interrupted our conversation a couple of times with pretty stupid comments and entered (probablyaccidentally the wrong amount in the card machine. Thats the last thing to improve to get the 120% satisfaction.
