Basic, booth-lined spot with regular & pan pizzas, pub food, sandwiches & Italian & Greek items.
Awesome service great food Corey was a great hostess great hospitality
Great food and service
Pizza was pretty good. Wouldnt say the best but definitely eat there again
We are visiting from the UK and honestly cant rate Josie enough. He was bloody brilliant from start to finish. The food and drinks were flowing all night beautifull food and top service.
OMG. We have had a few experiences with 2 waiters/waitresses Jose and Danielle. Beautiful inside and out. Service was exceptional and we only go back for the food and them. Absolute heros the pair of them.
Delicious pizza - pepperoni and mushroomsJonathan was a great server
Always great food and service!
Chicken Parm was delicious, service very good, and prices reasonable.
Great as always. One of the best burgers in the state.
Their pizza is amazing seriously best crust and texture cheesy not to much sauce my familys favorite now !!! Wish they delivered but thats ok worth the drive their pepperoni slamming and the Spartans special remove the anchovies you gotta try it !!!!
Two monthly seasonal martins here in 8/22 still set a bar for these cocktails. A tender lamb gyro and fresh eggplant grinder made a good lunch. We got a take-out BadaBing pizza with sausage, pepperoni and green pepper and an eggplant parmesan with pasta dinner for two as a gift.#Excellent job by the bartender stopping in here for a cocktail 6/22 before meeting friends for dinner in Beacon Falls. Chilled martini glasses were brought to the bar with lime wedges on the rim and then two shakers for each of our drinks. Full pour. Ingredients blended real well in terms of flavor. Nice to see the owner, Vasi.#Spartan Restaurant has been a go-to place in Waterbury for a few decades. Part lounge/bar, and part take-out pizzeria with enough room for an event, the family owned business services many people, from buddies meeting for a beer, three generations enjoying a meal in a corner booth, young couples on a date, or seniors returning to their regular spot for a cocktail and club sandwich.Spartan reminds me of the Fridays chain on the bar side, with a big square bar in the center and booths circled around it. Different is the décor, in that Spartan showcases large paintings of Greek warriors on their walls vs. Fridays feel-good kitsch. The take-out/event side reminds me of any place where you can grab your pizza and leave, or sit in a booth under bright lights.Entering Spartan, staff told us if we wanted a booth there wasnt one, but we could sit at the bar. This is not an hour we usually frequent busy restaurants, but when hunger calls, there it is. Plexiglas sheets hung around the entire bar to protect customers from staff and vice versa. We never saw one of the empty booths taken including the one with the reserved marker on it, but we left around 7:30.Given both a special and regular menu, we saw on the back page prime rib weekends were back on Fridays and Saturdays. We ordered the traditional Prime Rib Au Jus and Prime Rib Madagascar with onions, mushrooms and a brandy sauce to determine the difference. Our drinks were a double Myers rum with club soda and lime and an ice tea. The double was suggested by the bartender in that it was Saturday. True. Nice pour. The stuffed mushrooms off the special menu with crabmeat were large and savory. The bread that came before our dinner was warm and the right mix of a crunchy crust and soft interior. Given the choice between soup and salad which came with our meals, we chose soup. Two options: chicken noodle or lobster bisque. We chose lobster bisque. Hearing this, our waiter said there was a surcharge with this choice. We agreed. Not expecting anything, what a pleasant surprise.Really, really good with notable small chunks of lobster and a first bite taste that reminds us why we suffer extra pounds throughout this Google Maps Local Guide adventure. Noteworthy that paying $3.50 each for the bisque means soup didnt really come with the dinner, but no matter. With the starters being so satisfactory, the mains were okay. The Prime Rib Madagascar ordered rare to medium rare, was served well done. A good portion of fat removed left maybe 10 ounces of steak. The menu did not specify the portion size. The traditional Prime Rib with Au Jus was better in pure beef flavor, and ordered medium and came to the bar this way.The accompanying sides of mashed potato, mixed carrots and green beans were comparable to what one would expect from a school cafeteria. Zero seasoning. Overcooked. Unimpressive for $23/$24. dishes. Our bad, in that we forgot we werent in a steak house like Chucks, for example, (see my photoswhere our prime rib dinners were cooked to perfection - from rare to the well-done end cut, and the appropriate baked potato.Mentioning to staff waiting for our tab that my prime rib was not cooked to order, he winced, apologized and thoughtfully brought us a container of extra au jus to have at home. Pizza, apps and sandwiches are the way to go in these restaurants. With Spartan, one of their Greek specialties could also be a nice surprise.
Great service. Drinks were good. The pizza crust is definitely different from Italian pizza but it was good.
This place makes the type of pizza I love. Pan style pizza, AMAZING crust, and their sauce is that damn good. I’ve never eaten inside the restaurant, always takeout, but pizza night is never anywhere BUT Spartans. Not only is their pizza good, but their other options such as their cheeseburger club sandwich and fried clams. Literally the best. I’ll be so disappointed if this location ever were to move/shut down. Good work, guys!
Good drinks, great portions of food, good waitresses, get there early, seats fill up quick
$27.91 for 2 BLT sandwich and 2orders fr.fries. We are terribly disappointed in bacon burnt so bad it even ruined the flavor of the tomato!! We have been ordering these items for YEARS...TOday was the last time.No real chef or short order cook would ever use bacon this overdone.
Very, very disappointed in their BLT sandwich. Bacon was extremely overcooked, burned is more like it. Sloppily put together, soggy, thick sliced tomato, and the thick vein of the lettuce was used instead of leaves. At one time, they had the best BLTs around. I guess they dont care to have customers return. That was a waste of money.
I grew up eating Spartans. Every time I come back to town I demand that my family takes me to Spartans. This restaurant’s chicken parmigiana is the best dish I have ever eaten. I have traveled the world trying to find Chicken Parm that comes close to Spartan’s, but to no avail! Spartans remains the best. You HAVE to try this restaurant
I had a meatball grinder. The portion size was decent for the grinder. The side was literally a spoonful of potato salad. The restaurant only provides one refill of your drink which was needed because the grinder was extremely dry.
SPARTANS. BEST. DISH. JUST LIKE STIENBRENNER ON SEINFELD. WHERE IS MY. CALZONE. VERY VERY GOOD. WITH EXTRA RAGATTA.ONIONS,,,peppers. Sausage. Exta toasty. 9.8
Well, truth be told, the pizza is awesome!! The presentation, excellent! I walked in and ordered the pizza based on reviews I had read concerning Spartan. I am not disappointed. The young lady at the counter was very polite and helpful. I asked if I could order the pizza 1/2 vegetarian and 1/2 Greek, NO PROBLEM. I asked if I could get garlic butter put on the crust, she asked Rocky, NO PROBLEM. I looked at the bottom of the pizza, golden brown, NO PROBLEM. The pizza has good texture. The ingredients evenly spread AND a good amount. If Im ever in the area will I return to the Spartan? Yes I will, NO PROBLEM!!!
Great pizza nice waiters and waitresses. Very friendly and a nice up enviorment.
Great food. Server Denise was so positive and helpful with suggestions!
Food is always good 👍 hot& always ready on time. Keep up the good work!!
Ive been coming here for 20 years and Ive not only never been disappointed but the consistency of their food hasnt changed. Whatever I get from them, tastes the same as the previous dozens of times Ive been here. 5 stars 110% without a doubt. Delicious, friendly, great customer service, whats not to like?
A landmark restaurant in Waterbury where I had my first date with my wife to be. Had a perfect pizza pie. Today 30 years later ordered the same pie. Simply, perfect dedicated family restaurant that you taste at every meal.
Great food.......best in the state.... The best and I mean best bacon cheddar burgers in the country thank you
Their pizza is so mouthwatering, staff is great too! :)
Everything was delicious took me out for my birthday the only thing make sure the tables are clean not sticky so ants wont crawl on people
Great place for Italian food with a Greek accent. Reasonable prices in a pleasant setting. Spartans has been making pizza since I was a kid. Its stood the test of time.
The girl that does the take out is extremely rude and they dont even give bread with the dinners anymore. The food is good but Im not going back there. There are other places with better prices and just as good food.
In short, Spartan is not what it used to be (I grew up eating and dinning at Spartan), if given Spartan as a choice again to dine at I would pass. Spartan, food in my families opinion, is not worth the money. Spectacular wait staff but flavorless food.Saturday, after a family day at the beach our group of seven were really looking forward to a delicious dinner to round out and end our long fun day. We phoned Spartan about 30min before we arrived to make sure they would be able to accommodate a party of seven. We arrived approximately 4pm and were pleasantly greeted by an energetic hostess. We were ushered to a large, awkward corner booth in the bar area. We should of asked for alternate seating however we didnt want to make a fuss. Two family members sat and ate on the square corner of the table and one family member sat half off the edge of the booth seat. Clearly the booth was not large enough to accommodate seven people comfortably. I wish the wait staff would have been more observant and recognized our space issue. We had two servers as a shift change was in the process. Both servers were excellent. One server started us off with drinks and taking our order then explaining that the second server would be taking over. The service was flawless and attentive without being annoying. However, each of our ordered food choices tasted less than impressive. Within our family group we had three people that have experience in the culinary field. ALL seven of us agreed that the food we ordered lacked flavor. There was an order of Real Chicken Parm, Fish and Cips platter, 2 Grilled Chicken wraps, Steak Euro, Chicken Nuggets and Fries and a Burger and Fries. Our orders all varied greatly so its not like the lack of flavor was a fluke. We were all very disappointed in the food. We were all shocked that it was ALL the dishes ordered that lacked FLAVOR! I would go into detail and pick apart each meal however this review has become long winded. .
This pizza is so expensive and for nothing. The pizza comes soggy and wet every single time. The sauce is so watery. Please take this into consideration, thank you.
Food is always fresh and delicious!! Wait staff are fantastic. Waiters Justin, Dillon and Jocelyn are exceptional!! Its definitely a go-to restaurant for us!! Always leave there happy and full and most of the time with leftovers!!
The food here is ok. I was with 3 friends of mines. My steak was the only thing that was cooked correctly. My friends Prime Rib was over cooked. My other friend had a Ceaser salad with 1 crouton and no cheese. My other friend ordered some buffalo wings which were breaded and deep fried! WHO puts breading on their hot wings. Not a good experience after spending over $100.
Terrific food as usually, but our waitress Denise with her great energy was definitely the highlight
Best pizza in town!!! Place is clean. Friendly staff, casual and relaxed atmosphere. Perfect family restaurant! Give it a try and you won’t regret it! 🍕❤️
This place used to be better. Hope it can be again. Most visits lately leave me disappointed. Food quality has decreased. Items are often forgotten. Chicken parm grinder was very bland this time around. Will probably find somewhere else to go from now on and hope that Spartan figures out whats missing and fixes it.
Went with a group of friends late on a Monday night. There were not many places open and we had a great time. Our waiter Justin was awesome! The lamb gyro was tasty and filling. large portion on fries and my friend ordered eggplant parm and it was a generous portion. Justin recommended drinks to our group. I recommend the Limoncello Cooler with raspberry.
We had a party of ten. We ordered for apps two different wings, mozzarella sticks and the calamari. All was good! For dinner we had the veggie pizza, meat lovers and cheese. Also a hit!
It took 15 minutes to get a soda and 45 minutes after ordering to receive our food. The bar tender was loud and obnoxious. The waiter forgot the lemon to go with my Pepsi, gave us blue cheese instead of ranch, forgot the French fries, then when they were brought out, they were soggy, flexible, and sopping with oil like squishing a sponge. The pizza was absolutely terrible- soaked with grease and doughy. Picked up one slice and the mushy dough folded in half and the oil- soaked cheese plopped into a soggy blob on the plate. The seafood platter was super fishy, nothing was fresh, and there was a puddle of oil on the bottom of the plate. I called for the manager.. Spartans restaurant manager is rude, arrogant, and disrespectful. We explained about our food and he said that’s just how it is, it’s Greek. It’s awful is what it was. I have come to Spartans several times over the last 12 years, and this is the first time I’ve had a terrible dining experience. It also will be my last. I’m never stepping foot in that place again. Nor will any of my family or friends, I am telling everyone how awful it was.
Tough place to review. Place has a very loyal following here in Waterbury. For me and my wife, the food is good but not great. Portions are large. Sandwiches are always good, pizza is decent. (pizza is a very subjective foodI recently ordered prime rib Madagascar. The piece of meat filled my platter and was cooked at medium rare and was a very good tasting prime rib. The mashed potatoes were on the runny side and the mixed veggies looked and tasted like they came out of a can. Service was good. For us this is a good backup place for dinner close to home
Never a bad meal. The menu is large and varied, and the staff are great Try the calzone if youre really hungry. Not only are they delicious, they are also a very generous size. Bet you cant eat the whole thing. 😊
Cant give it 5 stars as our waiter never came back for us after the first round of drinks. Granted it was after 11pm, but still. Seems to have a good neighborhood bar feel with high tops and booths alike. Quite a few draft options and a wrap around bar where you can watch the game from. Id definitely go back another time to give it another shot with my friends!
Excellent recommendation from our hotel for great menu items. Extensive selections and options. We were surprised by how fast and well made sandwiches were!Service from Melissa was excellent!
I took my son out for lunch at Spartans. We both got burgers to go, but once we got home, we took out our burgers and the bottoms of the roll were completely drenched with grease and unacceptably soggy. You couldnt even eat it. The flavor was good but again it was hard to eat with only one side of the bread. Perhaps if they toasted the roll first and then put the burger on it, it would have not been so wet. The popcorn chicken was not bad. Over all, the meal was quite greasy. I got onion rings and my son got french fries. I know... of course it was greasy, you ordered fried food! I have worked at all areas in restaurant and hotel, and management,soI know they could have drained it better or even put the roll on the side.He also had a slice of coconut cream pie which was quite small for $6.00 and the flavor was as if it was box made and not from "grand mas kitchen."Next time I think Ill try the Italian food. Stay tuned! 🙂Happy eating!
Very nice and welcoming. sat in the dining room. the prices are the best around maybe even better then most.. the food exceptional and enough for two meals. We had the Salisbury steak and brown gravy and onions with mashed potatoes.. Caesar salad , ribeye steak wrap with sweet potato fries. All delicious 😋. Definitely going back.
Ive only eaten here one time, I had the prime rib special. It was a good size cut and came with a generous portion of mashed potatoes and veggies and a side salad which was also a good size. The service was very good and our meals came out quickly. Would definitely go back.
Amazing overall! Easy to order online. Food was ready when I arrived. Ordered large pepperoni (which was hugeand a small buffalo chicken pizza. Both were excellent!
Had dinner last night, was really good I was looking forward to pizza but while speaking to the waitress ended up having scallops and fries washed down with a local beer which was really good throughly enjoyed my dinner.I was on the pub side so it was lively lots of tv screens showing sports.Lots of parking available.
AMAZING!!! All thats needed to describe this pizza. It was fresh and cheesy, perfect ratio of ingredients. Soft yet crispy crust. AND love the fact that theyre open late
