Modern farm-to-table dishes served alongside classic cocktails in a handsome tavern setting.
Came here for my birthday in August with a friend and had the best meal. Everything was delicious and beautifully plated from appetizer to dessert. Sit in the patio if you can! Beautiful.
Of 30+ "nice" restaurants Ive been to in Philly, within the top 3 on food quality. Worth making a trip to and infinitely better than the Starr or Schulson restaurants.Relatively quiet on a Wednesday PM.
Great cocktails!!!! Looking forward to go back and try the amazing sounding food!
Great place to eat the burger was really good and the bartenders are phenomenal. I watched a bartender make a drink using egg whites and it looked good.
mixologists here are top notchI asked him to make me a drink based on flavors I liked and it was great
Best crew. Great drinkies, excellent snackies
I really enjoyed the dining experience at Southwark. Everything from drinks, food and service was topnotch!
Such a lovely and delicious evening on Saturday. The staff and owners were welcoming and attentive.Highly recommend the cocktails, the lamb tartare and especially the duck. Chris and Marina definitely have a winner. Cant wait to take advantage of their tasting room!
Everything was over priced and over salted.. the ricotta toast was burnt black so all you could taste was char.. the skate was over just salt... gnocchi was mushy. The drinks were so small... the wine was half pours and the amaretto sour was 1/4 foamAbsolutely ridiculous place...Also freezing inside.Skip...
I’m in town visiting my friend for his birthday and staying across the street from Southwark in an AirBnb. We have had a great time in Philly so far for our first visit to the city with nothing but excellent, friendly service. We went to Royal sushi in the neighborhood and after a fabulous dinner they recommended Southwark as a place to get a cocktail after dinner. We walked in around 11:30 with our masks on and with our vaccine cards ready to be able to have one drink at the bar, and immediately felt like the energy from the two people behind the bar was very strange, despite this, we thanked them for water and the offer to have any menu explanation. My boyfriend and our friend felt like they were having holes bored into them from the stares from the employees, and after five minutes we were asked if there was a drink we could have. Before I could even finish my order the bartender very aggressively said “yeah sure” I immediately felt a pit in my stomach as his attitude felt really defensive and I asked if everything was okay. We basically just kept going back and forth and he said that he had had good interactions with everyone else that night and I asked him multiple times what the issue was and what energy we were giving that was unsatisfactory. We just decided to leave and not order a drink and as we were walking out the bartender kept saying “what happened, what’s going on.” I’m not sure what was going on but we were looking forward to a nightcap in our neighborhood for our last night in Philly after a lovely dinner and all left very confused and feeling anxious and like we had done something wrong. I have no idea what we did but if we ever find ourselves in Philly again we will not be going here. As a longtime food and bev worker, I understand what it’s like to be in this line of work and I’m always an engaged and gracious guest. Really just confused and upset.
Really great vibe and our server was extremely kind and funny. The food portions are really small though but cocktails are amazing!
The owner of this place proceeded to trash another restaurant owner in the neighborhood. He called him a “sexist and racist” which I know to be untrue. I’m guessing it’s hearsay and not based on actual one on one interaction, which ironically is it’s own form of prejudice. What a shame. The cocktails here are superb. The food is very good. The owner apparently is a judgemental, prejudiced person. I like the staff and the product but cannot return after this horrible interaction with the owner.
Had a fabulous dinner with friends at this quaint beautiful place. Dining here feels like your eating at your grandmas house (in a good wayit’s so homey and the atmosphere is great. The food and cocktails are all exquisitely thought out. Bit of a small menu but that’s ok because the choices are great. Had the chicken liver mousse, mussels escabeche, and the gnocchi with short rib ragout. Everything was so incredibly delicious and worth the price. Cocktails are expensive but STRONG. Also got free homemade icecream for my friends birthday!
Great restaurant with delicious food (and dessertand amazing service, and always a great time. Can’t wait until they open again!
Southwark offers outdoor dining on a really great patio on a warm evening. My sister, a friend and I enjoyed a really wonderful dinner there. The Heirloom Tomato Salad was first rate. My sister enjoyed the Tuna entree that she ordered. The wine was superb! Excellent service and a very friendly atmosphere..
Covid Review: Food was generally good. Flavors were delightful, and somewhat unconventional in the sense that we hadnt tried certain flavor pairings together. There was an interesting pickled/vinegarette salad with grilled octopus that I really enjoyed! Unfortunately, true to my American form, I was disappointed that I only got 1 tentacle for $17. Portion wise l, it was the only let down of the evening! Otherwise no complaints. Will definitely attend again.
Unequivocally hands down the most complete restaurant in Philadelphia. A must visit.
Went to the outside dining. Not too many tables, had a limited menu. There were a few entrees and appetizers. We had the grilled octopus (delicious), as well as some skewers. The BLT pork belly skewer was divine, the shrimp and mushroom ones were good too. Had a delicious tres leches cake as well.My one complaint is the alcohol menu. They had a few beers options, three wine options, and around 4 cocktail options. Couldnt even get quality liquor neat/on rocks. The main reason I love Southwark are the cocktails and the bartenders. I assume theyre doing what is best for business, but the selection didnt impress me. I dont think Ill go back until they have more liquor options.
The chicken liver mouse, housemade bread and butter, gnocchi and grandmas chocolate cake were all amazing. The bottle of turleys zinfandel was a great addition. Fantastic meal all around would heavily recommend.
Ive been twice during high-traffic hours and always pleasantly surprised theres seating for two available at the bar. The servers are quick and the food is good. I recommend the homemade butter and bread!
Very odd experience. Staff was great and ambiance nice but the actual food was hit/miss. My entree (chicken with meatballswas great but pasta not so much. Drinks terrible.
Great customer of mine. I have not had a chance to dine here yet, but they are doing great business wise. While here have a refreshing soft drink delivered by the friendly Vineland Syrup driver
Lovely and movie inspired cocktail menu. Cacio e pepe was pure favorite pasta dish and the fish of the day (swordfishwas absolutely stunning
Absolutely the best meal I have enjoyed in a very long time. Service, Food, Wine atmosphere all came together. Perfect. Steak tartare! My personal favorite. Thank You!!!!!
Pleasant atmosphere in South Philly. However, meals more for looks! I wanted a hearty salad and received a pile of escarole with light dressing. Not impressed with food and service just ok.
Bartenders are very attentive even with a packed bar on an unexpected dive night. The table service is amazing here also. I have dined here a dozen times with great food and service. Great food pairings by their sommelier to knock the food experience out of the park! Highly recommend this restaurant!
Wow. Six out of five stars. This was my third time here and every time was amazing. I had the peas and ricotta ravioli, fried green tomatoes, and chocolate cake with salted caramel ice cream. All amazing and service always perfect! I even like the mood lighting and music too :highly recommend.
We had a wonderful dining experience at Southwark restaurant. Our meal were as inventive as they were delicious. The knowledge and graciousness of the staff cannot be overstated. When my husband announced he had a nut allergy, our server warned him that the drink he had ordered at the bar was made with almond syrup. The drink was replaced and we went on to have a great evening. We can definitely recommend this terrific restaurant.
Great service and ambience. Unfortunately the chef used so much salt on our two entrees (prime rib and squid pastathat they were nearly inedible. Such a shame. Hoping it was just a bad night. Will try again
Great place to stop after a walk along the river. We had a reservation for 3 and sat in the back. They have a lovely patio outside but we asked to be seated inside. Nice ambiance with interesting flowers on the table. Upscale. Probably good for a date or a meetup with friends. The food was great. They were well-informed and helpful with our friends gluten-free restrictions. The cocktails were flavorful and have fun names! Excellent mussels and fried green tomatos. The catch of the day (tile fishand squid ink fettucine were very tasty. Recommend the strawberry semi-freddo.
cocktails are great, food is good but a little overpriced. desserts are great. has an old world bar feel, pretty tame crowd, not a lot or college kids. staff is always friendly.
Amazing food! I had the bone marrow and squid ink pasta and my friend had the gnocchi. Everything tasted so fresh and the flavors were lovely. Can’t wait to come back and try other dishes
This is a great dining spot for locals in Philly. I’ve seen this restaurant frequently listed in Philly Mag’s 50 best restaurants. Finally got around to trying it. Recently brought in a party of 3 for dinner. The three of us had the shrimp & squid ink spaghetti and pea & ricotta ravioli - both were excellent, fresh, and not too heavy. Also started with appetizers of bread & butter, shishito peppers, and a meat and cheese board. All were fresh and delicious. We also ordered a few off-menu cocktails which the bartender handled with ease. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Low key and relaxed atmosphere. The menu is not big but is well curated and carefully thought out. Highly recommended - I will be back!
Southwark is a luxury treat at very reasonable prices. Either for a date at the seating area or a drink at the Bar, this is a fantastic spot. Explore the appetizers and cocktails they have on special and HH every day from 4-6 pm
From out Starters to the Main Entrees - exceptional taste made with high quality ingredients! The gnocchi was pillowy soft and the pork ragout was fabulous! Yummy!
The overall ambiance of Southwark is upscale and homey. Cocktails are creative and delicious. Although the food menu is on the smaller side, there are options for everyone including vegetarians. Dessert is fantastic as well, I shared the cherry cheesecake on a pistachio cookie and was blown away. All in all, a great spot for a date or special occasion.
Fantastic spot! We were just there for drinks and desert but it was awesome. The drinks are well made and strong. Everyone on the staff was super attentive and helpful. I highly recommend it!
We had the last reservation for the night, I was surprised at the upscale feel of the place, when you walk in you come in the bar, the main dining room is further back, they also have patio seating. The service was impeccable, the food presentation and taste was wonderful, we enjoyed the charcuterie board and especially the Lamb shoulder special. The portions are manageable, just dont expect to have leftovers.
High end ingredients in the food and cocktails. Excellent service. Great lighting. Ideal date spot or intimate venue to catch up with a dear friend.
People love this place. If you want to be hip, and trendy but dont really care about anything, you will love this place too. Very overrated. Drinks are decent but not up the hype. Prices are high. Food ok, but is also pricey. Decor is strange..I feel like Im in a church rectory, or at my grandmoms house. Very odd and uncomfortable.
They have a very well thought out and interesting cocktail menu. They also have several tasty and inexpensive happy hour food options. And $20 bottles of wine (not at the bar thoughon Thursday. Not to mention a solid happy hour drink wise. Plus the floral decor is well planned and welcoming. And the bartenders uniforms are adorable!
Drinks at the bar were delicious and fun. Dinner in the dining room was absolutely outstanding. The dining room seems brighter than it was with the old decor, but pleasantly so. It still retains an intimate setting.
As classy as its colonial namesake, Southwarks beautiful bar transports you back to a classier time. The mixed drinks vary from old-timey concoctions to riskier variations -- all of which were excellent. Their draft list, somewhat unsurprisingly, is near absent (but you wont miss it.)Similarly, their tapas offerings invoke a Victorian attitude; their smoke mackerel pâté is worth the visit alone. A great place to relax for an after work drink.
Excellent food! Amazing ambiance and staff. Great value. A must! The cocktails were perfectly balance. The food was superbly prepared. Will be going back again soon!
My wife and I stopped in late one Sunday night for "just one" and experienced some of the most welcoming friendly staff, that provided incedible service, and some very interesting and delicious cocktails.Youve gotta try the food, the gnocchi is some of the best Ive ever eaten, and the slider is dynamite as well.
We went in to Southwark for cocktails last night. The restaurant and bar just reopened under new ownership after redecorating. The atmosphere and service couldnt have been more inviting. We sat at the bar and had one of their special cocktails, the Southwark Firehouse, a take on an Old Fashioned. Tasted great, and was served with a big ice ball so it didnt dilute as we drank. We accompanied the drinks with their olive assortment (varied and tasty), beet salad with tonnato sauce (wonderful), mackerel pate (also great, and not fishyand a plate of gnocchi with a ragu. Everything was top notch. Had a great evening. Well be back soon.
This is our go-to place now in our neighborhood. Drinks are delicious and balanced, and the staff are like old friends. The food is really good, too, on both sides of the menu.
This is the ultimate "bar". Small, beautiful and excellent service from the bartenders. Its easy to see why it has been rated one of the top bars in the US.If its sitting back sipping on a Manhattan or enjoying a beer with friends, Southwark has you covered. Excellent bartenders are talented at mixing drinks and tossing in some conversation... and a good trap selection to boot.Havent had the pleasure of sampling some food but the menu is very tempting.Quite simply a must visit.
Serving seasonal, local fare since the start, Southwark has delivered fantastic meals to my belly for 6 years running. The bar is the prettiest in town and Kip & Co wont keep you thirsty. Guide them towards what you like & theyll deliver what you didnt know you wanted, but will love.
Hands down. Yes, they are gin and rye snobs, but that goes hand in hand with, well, the best cocktails in the city. They make classic cocktails perfectly, in a lovely setting and with acerbic wit. Dont miss the Aviation. And dont order anything with vodka if youre not prepared for a fight.
