Southside Bistro - Tapas restaurant in Sunnybank, Australia
Cosy cool Cafe, tasty food friendly service
In an attempt to be sophisticated with fusion meals the menu mixes ingredients and flavours which by themselves are delicious but when combined in this restaurants offerings quite literally leaves a foul taste in your mouth. Example, chorizo, balsamic vinegar, chimichuri, corn bread and omelet! Do yourself and your wallet a favour and avoid at all costs.
This place is brilliant. Its a great location and the food is interesting and I enjoyed everything I was offered. Service was great and I would definitely go again. One small issue. We had booked and arrived to be told that because we were a group of 8 we had no choice but to have the set menu. Now you would assume the set-menu would be the greatest hits but it was not. There was actually not one thing I really wanted to eat. After much Faulty Towers/Yes Minister discussions with the manger we were allowed the al la carte.Brilliant. Go there.Dont be put off by the fact its under a railway line. Its a great space.
Lovely place to have a coffee and meal on the weekend.
Southside Bistro is a must-try cafe/restaurant located in the sunnypark shopping centre that serves modern Australian and Asian fusion dishes! They are open for both breakfast-lunch and dinner, which makes them a great option for anytime of the day! 🙌🥰We got :• Shichimi Togarashi Shredded Crab• Korean Army Stew Bao Buns• Beer & Chipotle Braised Lamb Shoulder• Homemade Potato Gnocchi• Jaffa PuffleMy personal favourites were the bao buns and the lamb shoulder! The gnocchi was really nice too and it’s something I don’t get often so it was nice to have! 😌 BUT THE BAO BUNS - AMAZING! Probably one of the best I’ve tried! 🥰 The flavours of the dishes were very well combined and the portions were pretty good for the price! 💯Highly recommend giving @ssbistrobne a try! I’m sure you’ll have a great experience! 🙌
Had lunch her for 3.Have returned to Southside Bistro many times.Food, drinks and service still consistent as past times.
Recommend to check this place out. Good vibe, delicious food and good service. Will definitely visit again.

Absolute AMAZING food and staff is super friendly. We went for a late lunch and were positive suprised by the delicious food and great service. Food was prepared with a lot of care and looked fabulous. We will be back! :D
The staff was very friendly and fast. The food was delicious. Highly recommend the braised duck which was cooked to perfection. Good vibes!
The latte art is out of expectations for a small chai latte. The staff are nice and the decorations of the shop is wonderful. Never thought that is just located next to the Market square. The outside sitting also full of botanic asmosphere. I have ordered a crab omelette for my husband and a salmon tasco for myself. It more like a fusion food. The portion is large and the price is fair enough.
Such epic desserts!! Really friendly service and prices are too shabby. Tucked away on the outside of a shopping centre, it feels well hidden. Worth checking out!
Good fusion feed. Impressed at the ability of the front house staff, being able to manage serving, making drinks and taking order single-handedly. She always had a smile on and was very apologetic for the delay (to me i did not consider it delayed given the multi tasking). We understand the times we live in.
We just enjoyed a very nice dinner. Had Bao buns with very yummy duck fat fries. We shared a panna cotta dessert which had fried pineapple and star anise sauce, a little different and so delicious.Thank you to your staff for their friendly service.
Bit disappointing tonight! Went for their special Steak Night, the whole table ordered eye fillet but one veal was served. Reaffirmed with the staff but what we had ordered but both the waitress and Head Chef came out and told me that was what is on the menu. Pretty sure veal and eye fillet are two very different things.
Perfect breakfast / brunch place with enough of a selection to leave you wanting to come back for more. The food itself is quite unique being mainly Asian fusion and I appreciate the pleasant presentation. I left the place very satisfied with the service, food and coffee.
Different but delicious food. We had the Benedict, side of mushrooms & prawn omelette to share with caramel chocolate milkshakes. Nieces had bacon and eggs with avo smash sides, they loved it & chocolate milkshakes. Service was excellent and attentive. Great experience, definitely going back. Well done Southside team!!!
Lots of gluten free options. Everything we have ordered here has been exceptional! Really interesting and very tasty!
Asian fusion with a twist. They offer unique dishes unlike many cafes in the Sunnybank area. The ever changing specials are a must-have in our lives. No wonder I’m a constant returning customer ~ In addition to the items shown, I recommend their sizzling brownie and the 5 spice sticky pork ribs! I am already hyped for my next visit 🙊🙊• kimchi beef bao buns• kimchi and pork fried ricefor more foodie reviews follow @katey.thefoodie on instagram
Really good service at this little bistro whose signage advertised Tapas & burgers but we saw no sign of this cuisine. Asian-style cuisine in generous portions & absolutely delicious. Candied veges & the chicken curry fed two hungry people ...with a doggy-bag!Really lovely, attentive service from our host but the kitchen seemed busy & food service was a little longer than expected. But worth the wait! Well be back, often.
Fantastic food and fair prices.Really enjoyed every meal!
Service from staff was prompt, and the food/drinks came out very quickly. The Taro latte was so delicious, and I highly recommend ordering it. What we ordered off the dinner menu was an interesting fusion of Asian and Italian, the beef brisket with creamy polenta and fried barramundi with risotto. The creme brulee was so decadently smooth and yummy. Ill definitely be back to sample other dishes from their menu.
Nice atmosphere, friendly and polite staff. Loved the special menu for lunch got the crispy pressed pork hock. The duck fat french fries 🍟 was really delicious. My Mrs got the Bao buns crispy shredded fish which she didnt enjoy as the fish texture was similar to panok breadcrumb though the Bao buns were good large portions. There is a dinner menu which well try next time!
Friendly staff and the desserts were delicious!Update*3 years later and the coffee/food/service is just as good as ever. Highly recommend you check it out, you won’t regret it!
We came on Monday where they run steak night with unlimited sides. The steak was ok. However cooked inconsistently. We all ordered medium however some were more cooked than others.
Although it took approximately one hour to receive our food, the wait was totally worth it! The staff were nice and accomodating, and the food was delicious.I shared the Platter for 2 and the duck fat roasted French fries, where the latter is a must have. Surprisingly, the toast, croissant and hash browns were super crunchy - personally, I loved the toast the most. The only let down of the platter was the mini açai bowls which were more on the watery side, but still yummy nonetheless. The ambience of the cafe was cosy and aesthetic - I would totally come back to try the another dish and have their amazing duck fries again!
Had a most delicious meal at Southside Bistro. Staff are friendly and very helpful. Great tasting and great value. Definitely going to return. Amazing GF menu
We visited Southside Bistro for some dessert on a Thursday night. The staff were very warm and welcoming. We decided to try the matcha brownie. This was served on a sizzling plate with ice cream and white chocolate sauce. The presentation was beautiful, and the taste was really good as well. They also have a chocolate brownie and some other very interesting desserts which well definitely visit again to try.
What a find! Love that it isnt just the typical eggs and toast brunch place and that their menu is so inventive, yet frequently updated too. Different flavours and great coffee, bit of a drive for me but Ill definitely be back if Im in the area!
We had the Monday night steak special. Thumbs up to the chef for a lovely welldone steak without the need to burn it, best Ive had in a long time. The service was so polite and attentive I know we will be going back. After dinner we played snooker which is just next door where the atmosphere was so friendly, which was a great night out! Thank you.
Great food, a lot of gf meal options and a lot of tasty chef specials to choose from. Really good house made drinks too
Had bunch here and had some amazing food. Good sized portions as well. The coffee was good and the staff were friendly and helpful.
I had been here many time for breakfast lunch, this time we had dinner in here for celebrate we anniversary !Maybe be not looks very fancy restaurant, but food was nice coffee very lovely ☺️
One of the best non Asian restaurants in the whole Sunnybank/Sunnybank Hills/Algester/Calamvale pockets. A brilliant and unique menu including drinks. Deceivingly average set up when you approach it but the food is exceptional and the staff are very polite and helpful. Highly recommend trying every single one of their specials too.
3.75 stars - been here a couple of times and finally got to try their dinner menu. The menu offered a variety of selections although prices is a bit expensive. We tried the:• Yuzu & Shichimi Togarashi Cured Salmon - refreshing dish, interesting flavours and everything worked well together• Tea Smoked Duck Baos - the sauce was beautiful however the duck was a bit chewy, didnt taste very fresh and the baos werent fluffy• Cumin & chilli spiced lamb tostadas - lamb was well seasonsed, delicious dish however is oily and on the heavy side• Gochujang & Buttermilk Popcorn Chicken - interesting concept but the combination of the sauces was not enjoyable and the chicken wasnt crispy• Crème Brûlée - tasteful! Nice and creamy. However the fruit compote was runny and diluted, could probably go without it
Perfect as always. Unbeatable Crème Brûlée. Gnocchi is delicious, matcha white chocolate brownie is amazing, and the tea smoked duck breast bao buns are refreshing and great to share. Always love eating here! Wonderful service as always.
+++ Culinary creativity of Asian fusion thats rarely found anywhere else Ive been to!+ Lovely outdoor deck setting,+ chill music that really gives the place a groovy ambience,++ lovely & attentive service by Daniela.- The only thing keeping it from being 5 stars is the low value factor-- while you might not get so much for the price, its a healthy portion, and the fact is, you wont get anything quite like their unique offerings elsewhere. We arrived~1:30 after the lunch peak time. Loved chatting on the outdoor dining area!Tip; if dining in on a weekday afternoon, be SURE to leave the parking lot well BEFORE 3pm unless you wanna be fighting the after school traffic at McGregor primary school!
Desserts were really good, reasonably priced and customer service was friendly. I would say the matcha brownie was slightly too sweet for my palette but still a nice experience. Atmosphere and location was good too, except it can get noisy sitting outside as its next to the carpark.
It was awesome experience with drink I didnt try any food yet. It is little slow 🐌 with taking orders and serving food or drinks. I tried mango matcha smoothie and taro late. Great test. Thanks southside bristro making my morning great.
Beautiful food in a lovely cafe atmosphere - perfect. So many gluten free options which is handy if required. Pet friendly. Great drinks, staff and service. Plate sizes are generous so sharing isnt a problem...I believe thats the style idea. Desserts are not too be missed!
Everything here is absolutely incredible. Hands down my favorite restaurant, and has been for the past 4 years throughout menu changes. The staff are always wonderful - friendly and efficient. I wish I could say just how much I love this place. If you come here, try the caramel milkshake and the white chocolate and matcha brownie, my two all-time favorites - you wont be disappointed!
Pretty and refreshing!Such a beautiful start to my Sunday lunch and l always love a cafe that is kid and pet family. Always a bonus with me especially when it comes with yummy food and drinks. I tried the Dragonfruit and Pineapple Slushie and Iced Dirty Chai Latte. Both were great. If you love Bao buns than Southside Bistro is the cafe for you. It’s a Bao bun heaven! That’s exactly what it felt like. With the best Bao bun options too. We went with the deep fried fish paired with yummy sweet potato chips.Another option that l couldn’t resist was the Ramen burger. Ramen noodle buns with satay caramel pork belly, kimchi, charred Asian greens and seaweed salted fries. I mean l could l resist that. Amazing!
Havent been here in a while, and it seems they have extended their menu. The food is very fusion with very interesting taste, all in a good way. I think people with both very Asian or very western taste buds will find this place pretty exciting.
The tamarind fish, in the bao buns, was great. So flavourful, nice and crispy. Id order the fish on its own as a main, it was that good!..the bao buns themselves were okay, didnt have the home-made freshness.Crab omelette was very tasty, maybe a touch on the sweet side.Seaweed fries and our drinks were utterly delicious.Well be back
Dinner was tapas style and service was fast. Unique and delicious fusion style food. Food tasted fresh and well prepared. Can get multiple small plates for lots of variation or big plates if you want a main meal but food is interesting enough to want to get small plates. Desserts are something to look foward to and if you come after 9pm, you can get 1/2 drinks. Breakfast the next day was also nice, quick service and the minced lamb was nicely flavoured although not too big. Coffees and iced drinks are also very nice.
Lotus Roots Chips ftw! Absolutely dig these and they were topped with seaweed flakes! Also ordered the Ramen Burger and Peanut Butter Tofu Bao Sliders. Not impressed with the literal Ramen Burger at all... The burger was so weird and hard and almost tasted very similar to uncooked Maggi noodles. However, the Pork Belly was cooked to perfection, resulting in a fat, succulent piece of meat. The PB Tofu didnt exactly hit a home run either... Couldnt taste the PB anywhere and the flavours were all just a mess in the mouth. What really hit a home run here was the service. Kudos to the wait staff!
I would have given it 5 stars if the chicken is more infused with the flavour of the sauce/marinade.The eye fillet was delicious and the sizzling brownie ..... you got to try it to believe it! One of the best I have tasted.Really fudgy, soft, decadent and sinful.... just like how a brownie should be and much more....There is even a cluster of caramelised popcorn on top !!
What used to be the go to place in Sunnybank for progressive Fusion Asian food has baod out of the game in our opinion.Menu was dirty and smudged. They all were. Very subpar and did not wish to touch knowing we were using our hands to eat.Drinks were ok but the mocktail style drinks were off the mark flavor wise. Beer was cold....so thats a plus. Water brought out promptly.Meal time, menu seems to be the same same with nothing exciting as used to be the case. We ordered sliders and one other ordered Barra with salad. The sliders: were over spiced and under delivered. Buns were ok but average at best. One Bao set and one brioche set.Filling in the Bao was inconsistent and spiced hard in one and not as much in the other. Peanut Tofu Bao with chips as extra.Other was the Chicken Brioche with chips as extra. Chicken was quite wet and odd feel in the mouth. Cooked subpar really. The Barra and salad. Well we were the only ones there being early at 5:30, ordered which the order was written down. So we get the Bao and Brioche first and no Barra....so we wait as thought the Barra would come shortly after. Some time later we decided to eat (Barra still not arrivedwhich our meals were of course cold. We had finished our meals and had to flag the hiding waitress to come out so we could ask where the Barra was. Told would not be long, and only then they started cooking it.She then runs back out and looks at the special board to remember what we ordered....sighSo another table had arrived and they had 3 plates out before the Barra came finally. The different waitresses delivered it (original didnt have the stones to come out and apologize we thinkwith a short "sorry for the wait".Nothing more on this from SSB. No drink offers for stuffing up or anything, just asked us if we wanted to see a dessert menu. We chose not to have dessert as who knows how long that would be.Upon payment, no apology or discount....just a 15% off your next meal. Yeah nah. We have been long term customers of SSB but unfortunately will not return.Would reccomend others to go elsewhere too. Better value and more progressive food on offer elsewhere.Price for bao with chips and brioche with chips just over $40. I feel the value for what you used to get has also dissolved.
This is one for the foodies! What a quirky and delightful menu...we love how experimental the chef is but this is not an eatery for those with a palette that is not adventurous. If, like my husband, youre a bit bland when it comes to cuisine, try the matcha muesli: its a safe option.Food could be a little hotter when it hits the table and this is not a place for ambiance but if were talking taste, this place deserves 5 stars.
I am a frequent customer at SSB. I enjoy the variety and cleverness of the menus. They do a lot of specials featuring in-season ingredients. They are open early for brekkie and lunch and they do late night tapas and desserts. They have a great range of drinks from teas to coffees and smoothies. My faves are the Barramundi dishes on the specials menu, the Pork belly Benedict (which is served with lychees and kimchi and I dont normally like kimchi). Drinks wise, they have a killer matcha mango smoothie and the smoothest taro latte. Hubby likes their creme brulee as well. All in all a good place to catch up for a bite to eat and some late night snacks. Will recommend to friends and will be a return customer 😊
