Longtime, family-friendly spot with a leafy patio offering pub eats, drinks & diverse events.
The service was great. The drinks were fine. The pricing was appropriate but both the crumbed chicken and pork snitzel were dry and overcooked to the point of tough string! And in my group of ten at least half of us chose that option! I wish I had sent it back. I do not know what to say but would not go back for food. However the entrees for a person opposite were delicious!
We were placed on a table for 6 around a corner away from atmosphere. Tables were sticky and so was floor.Waitress took ages to take our drink order. Then it took about 30mins for them to arrive. Our meals arrived before our drinks. Meals were OK but basic pub food.We ordered a 2nd round of drinks..big mistake they took so long we got up to leave..and then they arrived. No apology or acknowledgment from staff about delay. Pub was not busy.Definitely won’t return and definitely not recommend to spend your hard earned cash there when there are so many other yummy places to eat and drink in that area. Waste of time and money!!!!
absolutely disappointed! do not order the mix vege stone grill. They may as well have come from a frozen veggies pack. What a joke!
Great staff. Great live music. Average food. Burgers had cold buns and cold plate with warm filling. Chips were nice. Great outside area.
Always good when I come here. Service is fast! The burgers are really good and you get a lot of chips on the side. Friendly staff too. Cocktails are also yum
Tuesday night is Stonegrill 2 for 1 night. aka cook your own on a sizzling stone. On selected choices (200g meat options$36 for our choice of fillet. Came with chips and some salad greens. Needs gravey; which i asked for. The waiter dude said he would go find out and never came back to me. Waited. My meat over cooking and hubby done a while back... mmmm sigh. Its a go buy at the bar scenario . Kinda serve yourself. I know I did. Wanted icecream with my cheesecake brownie and the dude said nup, only can serve me a sundae... cant manage to pop it on my plate even of i pay for it. thanks heaps... not. I know its a bit of a student bar place. Big area. friendly enough. liked the vibe. Has my favourite dark beer. Nom nom nom Double Vision Brewery- stout. Thumbs up for that!
Superb ambience and hospitality. Delicious food as always. Generous quantity and value for money. Excellent options for party and events. Family/kids friendly environment. Couldn’t ask for more.
I rarely do this but there were multiple things that happened on my last visit. Despite the restaurant being generally quieter than usual the wait times to be served and to get drinks was extremely long which is fine but generally the waiters were not worried about checking in or checking if the rest of our party needed anything when they arrived. Then the food arrived and one person was given the wrong order, another ordered the WOAP burger by itself but a beer was brought out (and then taken backand the fish and chips had one tiny piece of fish. Then one person was charged for the wrong thing. The food was generally not good at all.
We came for the WOAP burger, which was tasty indeed. Shame that the fries seemed like they had been sitting around a while. The table service was fast, efficient and friendly - so full marks there. Unfortunately I was splashed (clothes, bag and shoeswhen a nearby jug of cheesy burger sauce was dropped on the floor. Not a problem (accidents happen), but I had to ask for a cloth so I could try and clean myself up :( Not a great way to end the night.
Love this venue, variety of spaces and especially the backyard. Love the ordering ability at the table, which was super quick. Was a little surprised to see only two juices available, one with ginger, one beetroot. Both very bold intense flavors!Loved being able to build my own breakfast. Didnt enjoy the gluten free bread, it was very hard. Waffles were dry. But overall good, we will return
Great, friendly service, food was really quick and nice. Never had a bad experience here and theyre great with kids. My daughter got given a takeaway bag with crayons, stickers and an activity book that she loved.
Had such a good time at dinner tonight, our server Atlanta was so friendly! She talked us through the menu, gave great suggestions, and made us delicious cocktails (highly recommend the espresso martini!). She really made the experience for us, we’ll be back
Second bad experience. The first time we came here we were served mouldy pretzels, which were replaced and taken off the bill so we decided to give it another chance. I asked the waiter for a ‘coffee over ice’ specifically as I didn’t want it frappe style, to which he scoffed and said ‘so an iced coffee’. He then brings me a coffee over ice cream with cream on top, the opposite of what I wanted as I am intolerant to large amounts of dairy. When ordering I asked him if their hollandaise was house made or from a bottle, to which he paused and said home made. However when I received it, it tasted exactly like the supermarket bottled hollandaise. I tried to eat around it as I was hungry but ended up leaving most of my meal as it was all over it. I would have ordered something different if he had been honest. I brought this up and he said sorry however I still paid full price for everything. Unfortunately will no longer be recommending this place.
Amazing food, came out really fast. Great service. Was served by Meg and she was very friendly and lovely. Went above beyond for us. Gave us great recommendations. Definitely would come again
WOAP burger was delicious along with the matching beer.Around our table the chicken in my partners burger was dry and stringy, and the calamari wasnt cooked very nicely. The menu price doesnt quite match the quality of the dish.In saying that, the atmosphere, decor and range of meals are great and the service is definitely much better than it used to be. Still happy to come back.
We were given a little card from Sarah asking for feedback. More than happy to do so, we had a great time, service was very friendly, and the WOAP burgers were delicious! Hats off to the chef (were told his name was Kapel). Thanks Southern Cross! :D
Food was good but the service was really patchy. We wanted dessert but no one came, so I asked, then the no menus could not be found, and I was just told 3 options, then had to tell my group myself, and finally someone took our order. Appreciate that there are staff shortages, but it would have been good to have a heads up that this was the case, so we could have been a bit more proactive.
We had a baby shower at Southern Crosss one of the event spaces "The Lounge". Kate the girl who looked after us and the team at Southern Cross were so friendly, professional and very helpful. They offer free face painting for kids on Sat/Sun and kids friendly menus - which is the main reason why we chose this venue.Unfortunately the event coordinator Stephen from Kāpura was not the best communicator which is the only downside of this whole experience.Big thanks to the team of Southern Cross, and I would recommend this venue to anyone who is looking for a venue :)
Tonight our server Sarah looked busy. The restaurant was fully booked as we were told, but she made space for us. We had the best time, the stonegrill was perfect. Couldnt fault the service, food was absolutly amazing!
I like the vibe of the place and they offer a good mixture of events for a variety of customers. BUT I had lunch there recently and I had probably the oddest salad Ive ever eaten. And not in a good way. I felt like I was eating a Big Mac, with out the bun, meat or cheese. Its called "power salad" and it consists of sliced gherkins, and LOTS of them and lots of cos lettuce (thus the reference to a Big Mac), a few kernels of corn, about 5 edamame beans and cold small cubes of roast pumpkin. It does not work.
We had a large group on a wet and wild night whilst much of the hospitality industry was battling with illness and staffing. We had a great night, the atmosphere was buzzing, the food was really good and the service was great. Well done to all - we assume you were operating in challenging circumstances and yet we couldnt tell.
Went for a birthday reservation and they brought a beautiful grazing table and cake! Lovely staff and gorgeous interior
Visited with family for a teenage birthday. Generous portions, friendly staff and great service. Was very pleased.
Great meals and portion sizes. Excellent quality meat all cooked perfectly. Good service. Unfortunately no vegan friendly dessert for the person in our group with anaphylactic allergies to egg and dairy.
Amazing food, super tasty and generous portions (great vegan options were a plus too!). Oh the delicious drinks and friendly service were also highlights. Our family visiting from Hawera loved everything and were stoked about the whole experience at Southern Cross :Will definitely be back for plenty more good times in the future!
Went for a birthday dinner for our youngest. Amazing food, beer choice, ambience and staff.
Beautiful garden and bar. Awesome relaxed atmosphere, good menu and drink selection, and friendly staff
Steak was great. Good service and relaxing environment.
Friendly staff in a welcoming spot. I had their Stonegrill Surf and Turf and it was excellent. They serve your protein on a very hot volcanic stone and youre able to cook it to your liking. The shrimp came out perfectly, with a nice sear while remaining tender. The steak was a generous portion and the rock also gave it a nice sear on both sides. I recommend asking for an extra plate so you have some place to put the protein once youre done cooking it. Otherwise if you dont want it to overcook, youll need to put it on top of the side dish and that got tricky. Fortune Favours Sunchaser cider made for a tasty pairing.
Great for big groups with plenty of room to seat many people as well as places to find a quiet spot in the sun or by the fire. Friendly staff. Great for kids, board games avail and outdoor space for them to keep occupied. One dish was forgotten they were very apologetic and offered a complimentary extra. They may have been short staffed but there were uncleared plates on many of the tables that were there for most of our visit.
Our family enjoyed a catch up brunch on Saturday and the service was awesome, the food delicious and felt looked after the whole time. Its a warm and fun atmosphere and the square table was a bonus to all be able to share in the conversation. Always enjoy our time at the Southern Cross - until next time! Highly recommend if you want to get a group together or just some time out for yourself.
As a group, we have been to Southern Cross many times before and received great food and service. The same cannot be said for tonight and none of our table of TEN will be returning. The waitress had no idea what she was doing, couldn’t answer half the questions about the menu and got a lot of meals mixed up. The bowl of fries we received were cold so we sent them back and the steaks we paid extra to be cooked for us since they weren’t stonegrills were so undercooked we had to use others at the tables stonegrills to cook them ourselves. 2 people in our party waited 20 minutes for non alcoholic drinks. We were not offered any water and had to ask THREE times, to finally be brought a SINGLE bottle of water to share between 10 people. Food was very average, for almost $40 for some of the meals, you expect better. Then we decided to finish with desserts. Ordered and waited for 25 minutes but still no desserts so we got up and left. But when we went to pay the desserts were still on our bill. Honestly, a bloody shocker from start to finish. Would NOT recommend dining here. Plenty of other cheaper options with better service in Wellington central. Disappointing to say the least.
20 of us shared a drink and nibbles at the Southern Cross Bar and it was excellent. Booking was easy, we had platters which were enjoyed by all and good service. The Cross was super busy (Matariki Fridayso all kudos to the team for helping us have a fabulous pre-dinner catch up
Big place with a lot of activities and nice outdoor garden, coffee is great
Of course stone grill is perfect but also other mains are wonderful
The food was delicious, and we had a great time. Especially the toddler - who had a lovely pack of crayons for drawing and stickers. Thank you so much for the relaxing and yummy brunch
The steak was delicious I also had Korean fried chicken so yumJust dont like the corner table we got a bit uncomfortable had no space for legs and arm
Good food, the boys loved the burgers, salad underwhelming, polenta fries good. But service shocking. Had booked table for dinner and we were in the back bar with no table service so had to order through app or at bar. Girl at the bar was very unhelpful and patronizing. Probably wouldnt go again.
Hosted my daughters 21st here with a 100 guests. Awesome service and atmosphere; break out area was great along with table booths for the oldies. Food quality was excellent and no surprises with the drink tab at end of night with plenty of checking in during the night. Highly recommended for functions. Thanks
We recently had a birthday celebration here. We really enjoyed the gallery space we used for a smaller sized party. Great food and drinks. The only comment would be that it would have been nice to have more table service for drinks. Great place otherwise.
The Southern Cross bar is a big spacious venue with indoor and outdoor areas. Clean, tidy and well presented. They have a wide range of food and drinks. Staff are polite and professional. As well as a pool table they have lots of screens to watch sport. They even have kids play areas. Good place.
Ive been here 3 times in the last year. Overall, the food is not impressive and the service even less so given the price range. The first two times, orders got messed up (not mine). On a recent visit, I had to take off my mask and prove my age at the front door, which Ive never experienced before. It was only around 7pm. The pork schnitzel that my friend got served definitely smelled like it was off.
Lovely place and we enjoyed the food. We will be coming back. This Bar and Restaurant is highly recommended.
This booking for 7.10 am was for straight after the Dawn Service on ANZAC day 2022. The restaurant was warm and well set up to manage a mass of people all arriving at the same time.Staff were welcoming and the set menu was perfect. Coffee and breakfast orders were well handled and the service was slick.I booked because in 2021 the Southern Cross restaurant was the only place open on ANZAC day in Wellington. Great place to go and many from the forces agreed.
Very nice atmosphere and friedly staff, however maybe not for salads.I went with my two girl friends for some drinks and salad, but was a little disappointing, since is such a nice place.Vegetarian option was very poor as per photos and the other salad had raw broccoli, in my opinion should have been mentioned in the menu or by the staff and neither happened. The third salad was actually quite good. When my friend received her vegetarian salad she was quite shocked, so the waitres offered to change it for another one, very good service.Probably going back, but just for drinks!
Try the stone grill experience! This is the place for those who love steak, but you can definitely try their fish of the day, chicken, seafood chowder and more.I came here twice so far and once I tried the sirloin steak with fries and salad (very generous portionthen the stone grill lunch with 200gr rump steak, with green salad and fries. We also tried pita bread with hummus and it’s yummy indeed. As for the drinks, you have various choices as well. I tried the orange juice and the green goodness, a combination of celery, cucumber, mint, ginger and lime. Love it!The restaurant has spacious place, with garden in the back and seating in the front area and inside. The bar is open provides many as well. It’s disability friendly as well, with space and facilities provided for those with reduced mobility.Service is good and staff is friendly as well.Health protocol is observed, get your vaccine pass ready and check their opening hours during the traffic light system. As for the price, it’s medium range but it matches the food and the experience.Parking might be a bit tricky but you can secure some spots nearby.
Great atmosphere and venue. Awesome to sit outside on a warm day. Drinks was good. Food was OK, could be better. Awesome place, will recommend people to check it out. 👍🏼
Not a great experience tonight. Over cooked schnitzel that you couldnt really eat. Severely under cooked veges. Lousy tasting fish. Not up to the standards of the past. They were receptive to the polite feedback we gave and also gave money off so that was good.
Service and food was excellent. Food took longer than expected but was worth the wait. Definitely going back for more! Note, my wife gave me here chips hence more on my plate.
I got the 200g Surf and Turf and it was absolutely amazing. Everything went well together and it was fun to it cook yourself! The other steak was medium well and they love it as well, very filling. The burger was gone in a flash! The atmosphere was lively and the music was good. Service was great and very fast. The price was good for so much food! Will definitely come again and will be recommending this place to family and friends!Thank you for the great dinner!
