Tiny counter serve with a daily rotating menu of Southern soul-food mains & sides.
Great presentation and generous portions... the vegetables were all over seasoned. The meatloaf was on point, as well as the Mac and cheese and the service.I will go back however.
DO NOT EAT HERE. Food is both over cooked and flavorless. And overpriced! The chef literally doesn’t know how to cook soul food, made collards without meat or bone, the Mac N cheese literally tasted like plastic and the chicken was dry.
The ribs were tasty but way too spicy. The greens had many stalks and the cabbage was just not cut up right. Everyone can’t eat spicy food! Please label the food that way so that customers will be informed before they buy.
Now no! This aint it, uh uh sorry. When I walked in I shouldve knew the food wasnt gonna be properly season. Collard greens taste like they just boiled them down with water, mac n cheese had no flavor, chicken was way to salty and even the peach cobbler was bad. Yall just need turn in yall whistle.
Update, 1 year later: (2022)I recently visited this location again. They have new male employees and food tastes extremely SALTY. The quality and portions have somewhat diminished. Very disappointed. Wondering if they have new owners or something....Previous review 2021:Food is very good. I almost ate it all before snapping a picture. The Mac N cheese is baked excellent. The collards are cooked like true southern soul style. The yams are seasoned good with vanilla and cinnamon. Cornbread A+. I ordered 2 plates. The Fried chicken delicious. The BBQ chicken plate could of been better but overall great food at a good price!
Called in an order the girl that answered the phone has the worst attitude acted like she wasn’t getting paid to be there… I will not be ordering from them again I don’t care if the food is out of this world if ya customer service sucks so does your business!
Food was great… Greens seasoned, Mac n cheese good and yams very good…
Fried chicken is too salty to enjoy all your foods should not be so salty and the girl up front ignore me when saying I would like my wings cook soft please she totally ignore me
Today 9/3/22 I ordered 3 dinners of the 3 wing dinners I was given one order of the 3wing dinner the girl taking orders wasn’t listening when I gave her my order when I told her how I want my wings cooked she walked off and I was talking to her backside, customer service is very!!! Poor I asked her about the mac&cheese if she would put out fresh mac&cheese because what was out was dried out and hard I asked her again about the mac&cheese she said to me yea, yea, yea in a sarcastic way this was my first time ordering from there and my last time this location on Central is awful
Food isnt bad and the prices are about average. I cant say anything bad. Very clean and well organized eatery. I didnt get a very friendly vibe. I would try again.
This is the worst meal I’ve ever had. The meat loaf doesn’t look, taste like any ground beef I have ever eaten. The collard greens are disgustingly bland with a little heat to them. The mac and cheese tasted spoiled . My first and last visit to this place. Now I see why I was given so much food, I can’t eat any of it. I believe that this meatloaf was made from some canned dog food.
Great food!! Worth going back. You also get your monies worth. Thanks Katherine!!
Ribs good...actually average....portions large! mac and yams both had "kick" not sure why you make these dishes hot?may or may not give them another chance...they do seem busy
If I could give a zero, I would. I ordered smothered pork chops, which came fried. No cornbread and the most bland Mac & cheese I’ve ever tasted. just GREASY! Not my cup of tea
I have a complaint. I ordered thru doordash. Staff gave my dasher the wrong order. I scheduled my delivery for dropoff between 1:30 to 1:50 as I go on lunch at 2pm. I called a hour before hand to make sure everything was okay! They gave my dasher the wrong order, I called. They sent this back. This chicken looks and taste as if its been sitting ALL day. I am highly upset.
I ordered the 3 peice chicken with cabbage and fried okra. The fried okra was delicious! Chicken was very flavorful, and the cabbage was tasty. For dessert tried the peach cobbler, but that wasnt so good. The crust was very chewy and it just wasnt right. Food was reasonable priced and the wait wasnt to long. I will go back. Definitely some good food.
I will never go back it was well over priced the pork chops was hard and thin my mashed potatoes had no gravy after I asked for extra and the potatoes was gross the chicken was salty and the okra was greasy my wife was upset with her plate as well
Advertise Hamburger steak as Special, but never have it because it to expensive to buy is the answer I get when I ask.
Pretty horribleI ordered a meal for lunch from soul central from recommendations of coworkers. I had fried chicken, fried okra and sweet potato pie. Door dash delivered it faster than the time it said it would take. Good start until I openedmy food container to find ,2 overcooked pieces of chicken and burned up fried okra. Shame on this restaurant to send food that look like that. It was not good and I wound up throwing it away. Money just wasted! I then decided I would eat the sweet potato pie. Pie was okay. It was neither good nor bad. The crust I dont think was ever cooked. It was perfectly light in color and tasted like it was not baked. Prior to throwing my food away someone saw it and said they would not eat that. I suppose since doordash was picking the food up and they knew they would not have to face a customer they decided burned up food was good enough. Ive heard many good things about this restaurant and I really dont want to give up on them so I would like to give them one more shot to see if this was just a bad day or is this really the way it is. I will leave another review. But shame on so Central restaurant for sending such awful food. Shame on you!!!
If I could give no stars I would! Im a business owner & there is no way I would have people with no personality & people skills in the front of my store representing my company!! Those girls are rude & my fish was over cooked & chicken under cooked!! I went back & the girl had a nasty attitude and I asked if they were replacing my entire plate & they said no, just the sides which is unfair! Ive taken food back on many occasions & they usually replace the entire plate... She really thought it was ok to only replace those little dried out pieces of fish!!! I wouldnt recommend this place to my worst enemy!!! No STARS!!!!
I ate there today for the first time I will not return the pink lemonade was very good. The meatloaf wasn’t done the greens were over seasoned
The fried chicken breast was quite good. On the small side-but I’m guessing that’s partly why is was good. Thinking free range maybe. The okra was simply the best I’ve had since my mom passed. Thank you. I’m an over the road trucker and sadly it’s hard to find good food anywhere. Ok-ordered here again a few days after my original post-really disappointing this time. Fluke? I don’t know.
No frills or thrills comfort soul food. An nestled spot in the middle plaza midwood. I order the vegan plate with for 4 sides, blackeye peas, green beans, collard greens and sweet potatoes . A drink and cornbread was complimentary to my meal . The food was tasty, not overly salty or sweet . I ordered my food as this was an pickup order it was ready when I arrived . Great bargain for the price . I definitely willan returned customer
Location: UniversityI just had Soul Central...and Whew...its a Never again for me. I ordered the Fried Pork Chops, Mac and Cheese and Collards with Cornbread. The Mac and Cheese was bitter/tangy, almost like the pit vinegar in it or it was spoiled. The greens had NO FLAVOR at all. I literally could not even break the Cornbread in half, thats how old and stale it was. My pork Chops were good and well seasoned. So, thats that!
I really like their food....when they have what I want. Ive been several times and they often are out of one thing or another, today they were down a fryer and were frying a ton of chicken for one customer. Dont know how many more times Ill give them a chance.
i live across the street & this is my go to if I don’t feel like cooking. Customer service is slow BUT they are always booming so I can’t complain other than that
This place was a nice surprise. I used to live in the university area and wish this place was here when I was. The location is tucked away between the Bank of America and the Bojangles. The food was great. I honestly was a little worried as the food was seating covered in the counter similar to a buffet style. Yet, it was actually good. I was able to get the meatloaf with collards and green beans. All the sides are prepared without meat so you could have a totally vegetarian meal if you wanted. My wife got the BBQ chicken with green beans and mac&cheese. The BBQ chicken was fine. Yet, the sides were way better.Definitely, recommend it.
First time Ive ordered from here. Everything was delicious, but the fried chicken wings were SO SALTY I couldnt eat them. Ease on up trying to kill us with hypertension and youll get 5 stars from me.
So, I’m always skeptical trying restaurants, especially thru Uber Eats or other delivery services, But bayyyyybeThis food is delicious. It was still hot and fresh when I got it. The fried chicken cooked to perfection. The portion size is great. (I saved the other half for lunch tomorrowGreat food!!! Loved it.
Ive eaten here several times over the years. But $10.50 + tax for two (2wings and having to wait 20 minutes for them? Incredibly ridiculous. As much as I love the food here, Ill avoid this establishment in 2022.
Ordered 3pc dark fried chicken. Was tols its fresh and had to wait 15mins... dont believe it. Overcooked. Dry and hard in places on outside... the seasoning was essentially too much salt. Cabbage was ok. Mashed potatoes werent fresh tasting... gravy was watery and barely a gravy. Cornbread was weak too.Menu is scattered..most eveything is individual, not dinners, to rack up prices. Cant decide on a theme either.. they serve fajitas too.. no baked option for the fish and they tell you anything fried is made to order.. meaning... not prepared. So you wait 15-20mins. Paid as much as a sit-fown restaurant with little seating and everything served in styrofoam. Wont visit again. The place has sn identity prob with tge food they serve, served poorly, but at restaurant prices. Not worth it. Go to Mr Charles Chicken & Fish for better value.
Good overall. Prices are reasonable. Have to watch how long they fry chicken breasts because they ended up overcooked and dry. Outside of that, its cool for a semi soul food place. Definitely not a complete soul food place I would write home about but they are ok for the most part.
Fake food, incredibly slow service to be cafeteria style. The black eyed peas were "chili-flavored" (cumin, etc.). The hamburger steak was a processed formed patty, then overcooked to a chewy leather consistency. This place is an insult to its customers, much less Southern cuisine.
I got the hamburger steak meal with Mac b cheese and yams. My only complaint was the hamburger steak. I could definitely tell that it was a frozen Salisbury steak patty you get in the frozen meals. It was just yuck! So I do not recommend that at all. The yams were good and the Mac was excellent but that hamburger steak 🤢 I will return but I won’t be getting that again
So my food was NOT good and to make it worse they are not black owned. I ordered beef tips rice and green beans but when I got there she told me it was beef stew.... I didn’t bother but I was a little annoyed. All of the food tasted like mush and salt. The beans tasted canned and over cooked. Very dissatisfied.
Went to Soul Central University on a Sunday afternoon around 12pm. There were no cars in the parking lot and no one inside. They opened at 10am. After waiting for someone to come up front to take my order, it was placed at 12:06pm. I was told that it would be 10-15 minutes which surprised me since I was the only one in the restaurant. By 12:30pm, I was ready to ask for a refund. Still hadn’t gotten my food. I went to the counter and asked how much longer it would be and was told a few more minutes since the chicken took awhile. I asked was everything cooked to order and told yes by a very polite young lady which was fine except, that’s nowhere on the menus or website. By 12:40pm my ticket number was called but I had already made up my mind to never return. My fried chicken was over cooked and extremely salty. The skin was hard and the chicken dry. Macaroni and cheese was ok, greens needed seasoning. The cornbread was ok and the portions were very good. The wait was outrageous so you would think the food would be worth waiting for but, it fell short. As stated previously, I will not return. Too much competition for soul food for the new kid on the block to not come with their “A” game.
Ordered food through Uber Eats today and this was my first time trying food from this restaurant. Order was correct and each item was hot. The wings are massive and the flounder was oh so delicious. The Mac and cheese and collards were also tasty. The black eyed peas lacked season but I fixed that by adding a sprinkle of salt. And....I try not to eat bread but I did taste a corner of the cornbread and oh my.....yummy! This place isnt far from me so Ill definitely go back, especially bc now I want to try their other sides and maybe the bbq chicken and pork chops. Lol
I ordered a 2 piece fried chicken with 2 sides. I never had their fried chicken and read such great reviews about it. I wanted patiently for my food for 20 minutes. I got my 2 plates and went home. When I checked my plate, it only had the sides. I called back to ask about my missing chicken and I was told they knew who I was but I can come the next day to pick up 2 chicken. I told them I just want a refund and was told that they would just refund me for the chicken. I never got a refund for the chicken. My suggestion is to make sure you check your food before leaving because it is not going to resolve if you call back.
It’s decent if you never tried soul food but also if you don’t want strong flavor. The food sits out but is not as fresh unless made.FOOD:: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ plenty of options but not enough flavor and southern taste. Typical diner food it seems.LOCATION:: ⭐️⭐️ small , NOT dine in barely parking available.PRICE :: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ reasonable and good portion size takeout food
Simply put, you NEED to stop here at least once in your life. Literally everything is good and prices are reasonable, especially considering the portions. Their fried chicken is KING if you like yours lightly seasoned and lightly breaded and punching with flavor. Moist and perfectly cooked, you will probably need a towel if you eat messy. We havent tried other entries yet, but all the sides are worth exploring. Our favorites are the mac n cheese, yams, collards, and this is actually the first time Ive had okra taste good. Normally I cant stand okra because it gets either dry or goey, but I will readily order theirs again
Food is ok. Not a lot of love in their food. Most times I have bought something it was borderline cold.
The food used to be good years ago but I have no idea who is cooking now. The food is so nasty. I ordered meatloaf with mash potatoes and gravy. A side of collard, cabbage, and a peach cobbler. All of it was nasty. I didn’t even finish it. My son wouldn’t even eat it. There definitely aren’t any folks with SOUL in that kitchen. My food tastes better than this on my worst day. Save your money.
I cannot wait to eat at this fine establishment again. The staff the food and the price made for a very great event. The food was hot and seasoned just right. The rice wasnt over cooked so each and every piece could be enjoyed within the the well seasoned gravy. The beef was flavorful and moist. The candied yams reminded of my childhood youth. When on Sundays we would often have candied yams fried chicken and cabbage and homemade biscuits.
The food was delicious and the serving size for their side orders are larger than other soul-food restaurants. Its a good value for your money! I plated my food, but I ordered the jerk pork chops, cabbage, potatoe wedges with cornbread. My drink was their Arnold Palmer. (lemonade and iced tea mixed.)
Found this restaurant by accident and so happy I did. They have daily specials and a variety of entrée options. Service was fast and friendly and food was great. The collard greens had a little "kick" that I didnt care for, but the BBQ chicken and Beef Stew were both super tender. Definitely worth another visit.
Barely edible and def not the 4 stars listed! RAW meatloaf, I thought it was the ketchup, its not! Burnt fish and cornbread. Mac n cheese no flavor except too much salt, and also underbaked, just like the sweet potato pie. Collards and cabbage was ok. But, they forgot 2 cornbread pieces... not that I wouldve eaten them... plus, why wasnt any black people working here? Strange only asian people working. explains a lot. Glad I didnt pay for this. If i had picked this mess up, it would have been left there and refunded.
It was OK. I made my way across town to Soul Central. Modest restaurant without a lot a flair which made me think I was about to get some really good soul food. I ordered ribs, Mac n cheese and collards. The ribs were over sauced. The Mac was a solid offering and the greens had good texture but were too salty. If Im in the area Id try it again but definitely not worth the drive.... By the way the staff was very friendly. I ate inside it was very hot.
This place was awesome! The fried chicken was one of the best Ive had in Charlotte, (check my reviews, Ive had a lot of fried chickenthere Mac and cheese was good the collards were very good, I went with a group everyone really enjoyed their food. You get cornbread and a drink with the meal! Best deal in town!!! Highly recommend. Also its mainly a take out place just FYI. Friendly staff!
Bam! Holy cow....if you are Southern by birth as am I, this is a God-send! Soooooo good! Man, cant wait to go back again.
Soul Central will not disappoint. My girlfriend and I stopped by for a late lunch this past Saturday and really enjoyed everything we ordered (ox tails, green beans, collard greens, roti, jalapeno cornbread, and banana pudding). The food was well seasoned and the menu offers a lot of variety for everyone to enjoy. This business is run by family and close friends and we were fortunate enough to meet the co-owner, his wife, and son who were all on site that day. We all sat, talked, and laughed. It was a pleasure meeting them.Business was steady and the family greeted every customer with smiles and hellos as they came and went. The entire staff was very friendly.Everything looked delicious and we’ll definitely return soon to try more items from the menu.Be sure to support your local businesses, especially Soul Central.Shout out to JoeDaBro. Keep making those hits! And most importantly, obey your parents.Clif
