Absolutely fantastic! We come here often and food, service, and atmosphere are always fantastic. Thomas in particular is always lovely! Lots of good food options and fantastic cocktails, go for the Queen bee!

The staff were super friendly, felt very well cared for.We had the 5 tapas and a bottle of wine for £40 offer. Food and drinks were very good but credit for the overall experience goes to the waiting staff. We stayed and kept ordering.

Went for drinks and lunch. Staff were amazing. Food OK but a bit expensive for what we received. We sat outside on a lovely sunny day but it just smelt of smoke. Wont be rushing back.

Great food, friendly staff, loved the rooftop seating. We had a lovely bottle of house white wine at around £17. Especially loved the Padrón peppers roulette - some hot, some not! Highly recommend

Well well… After looking around for some time for a 30th birthday venue (we wanted a smart casual dinner and dance vibeSotanos was the winning candidate. The staff were a dream, the lady who was working security on the door was an absolute legend and the most friendly person we have spoken too in ages. If anyone says all bouncers have bad reps, well they need to have a coffee with this lady!The lads upstairs tending the bar were really nice (great taste in musicas were the staff who catered the food. There was no problems coming a bit earlier to hang up balloons and lay out cakes, while at the end of the night the staff kindly wrapped up all the leftover food while everyone was having a dance downstairs so we didn’t even need to worry about that - perfect for a hangover leftover breakfast. Great night went for a family party we were looked after superbly by all from bar people to security the food was great and plenty of itI would recommend Sotanos for a group social of 20 to 30 people

We came to York for my partners birthday and found Sotano by chance when looking for something to eat! So glad we did! The food is amazing, staff are friendly and really good value for money! Unfortunately didnt take any pictures but 100% reccomend

The most excellent tapas place in York and dare I say it the north of England!Really reasonable prices, great wine selection and lovely terrace. Best of all, the service and staff are fantastic and the food comes out quickly.Definitely a return customer whenever I’m in York.

We went here for lunch and ate on the rooftop terrace, ambience was great with greenery and shelter from the sun. We had tapas and cocktails. Thomas was our amazing waiter/host. Really friendly and knowledgeable. He found out it was our 25th wedding anniversary and gave us a complimentary shot of rum and pineapple. Food was fairly priced and really well presented. Artisan bread and a cheese and meat board was perfect. We went here in the evening as well and we went into the basement where again the ambience was great. Really moody. Candle lit and live DJ. Not full of 20 somethings. Great mix of people. Again great cocktails.

Ordered quite a few dishes from this place. All were amazingly delicious. The olives and sizzling shrimp were particularly my favorite. Pages of libations available to suit your fancy. Charming rooftop seating. Impeccable service! Loved it!

Kieran was an incredible bar tender, he understood the tastes we really enjoyed and created our own bespoke cocktails that were utterly delicious!!! Honestly, a great very kind vibe, and genuine care!!! Recommend to anyone coming to York!!!

Nice atmosphere,excellent service unfortunately the paella didnt keep up to the rest of the place. It was boring no real flavours,squi overcooked,chicken dry.

Great tasting food, but not really tapas. Something has been lost in translation, its almost like someone has given the chefs/ owners a recipe book but no one has actually been to Spain to eat real tapas. I would suggest halving the portions of the dishes and also the prices. If we hadnt shared wed have been full after only a couple of plates each. Its anglocised but tasty

The restaurant is nice and the team is friendly but the place is absolutely freezing. I dont know why in York they are activating the A.C always, even with 7 degrees outside. I had dinner with the jacket. We asked to put down the A.C a bit but nothing changed. The food wasnt nothing special actually I found the food a bit uncooked? Not sure why it was the second Spanish tapas with similar issues 🤔 maybe they cooks Spanish dishes in this way. Boh ... mystery.....

Great menu, food was fab. Very much comes out as its made so some dishes take quite a while which leads to a bit of a disjointed dinner. Beautiful terrace but inside you hear Kennedys on a Friday which is very lively

Nice enough but was disappointed at the slow service - the tapas dishes came out about 15 minutes apart rather than all at once, and one not at all! Food was ok, but not particularly memorable. Nice atmosphere and the staff were friendly.

Food was good (not amazing but perfectly serviceable for a nice catch up meal with friendsbut the service was very slow and we kept having to chase everything (after we had been waiting an hour!)

First time in a Tapas bar. The service was great and the food very tasty. The dishes I ordered were plentiful and filling. I would go back again and can recommend.

My friend and I came across this place by accident. They were very busy but offered us a table that had been booked by someone else till they arrived (40 minutes).We loved the place, but was unsure what wine we wanted, the bar tender brought us samples so we could taste and make our choice.They offered us an alternative table when the booked guests arrived and we enjoyed a lovely cocktail. The staff were very friendly and helpful.We will definitely book for our next visit as the food looked amazing. Well done boys, keep up the good work.

I visited Sotanos for the first time spontaneously with my partner (heard it was good from a friendand we both left confident we had found one of the top restaraunt experiences in York.Honestly blown away with the whole offering. From the moody, warm candlelit atmosphere to the skillful service (thanks Connorwho had both informed recommendations and had us belly laughing throughout our visit.Oh, then the food came out... The portions were bountiful and the flavour was perfect. Cant believe how all of the varied tapas were so delicious in their own ways.Fantastic night, superb food, Connor was brilliant. My new hidden gem of York 👌💎

I always come out in York and Ive never been in here until recently and I thought it was really good. We got some of the tapas, meat and cheese board as well as some other bits. The food was really good and we did enjoy it. My only negative would be i think for around £15 that we paid for the meat and cheese board it was a small board for the money we paid but maybe thats just me. The vibe in there was great and it will defiantly be somewhere we come back for a few drinks when we are next in York!

Great cocktails to start - the rum & mezcal Old Fashioned, called the Mauru I think? Service was fast, dishes were of excellent quality, and the portion sizes were some of the most generous Ive seen in a tapas restaurant in the UK.

Booked online thinking we would get a table down in the basement, which is the nicer environment. However, we were put upstairs. The music was extremely loud and we had to talk really loud considering the noise from other customers also trying to talk over the music.The food was nice which is why I gave them three stars but would have loved to be downstairs where it seemed a lot more romantic and calmer.

Such a cosy bar. Its a great date place to bring someone special. They have a beautiful terrace which is heated and so warm. You dont even notice youre sat outside. The wines are great and food is exquisite. Its connected to another bar downstairs, Kennedys. So when Sotano shuts you dont have to go far to a dance floor and more drinks.

Evening in the quiet basement lounge with chilled out music from a DJ. Bit pricey.....large wine and small draught beer £15.

Overall good tapas bar however outdoor space could do with abit of tlc to match the nice rustic/quirky indoor decor. Absolutely loved the meat/cheese boards and the croquettes.

Lovely atmosphere and staff where very attentive. Only reason not 5* they forgot the bread and olive oil and served an out of date beer.However the food was lovely and the red wine chorizo was the best I have ever had!!

I literally cannot get enough of this place when I visit York. The food is incredible, I’ve brought numerous friends and work colleagues here over the past few months. They do live music and a DJ on weekends. Staff are friendly and there’s a lovely chilled vibe. Patatas bravas and prawns are delicious

Little plates of gorgeousness. 9pm Friday 20 Sept. Cosy cellar restaurant, very busy. Took our name and number to call us when table was ready (told approx 30 mins and it was). Served by Jordan who was friendly and helpful. Two people shared bottle of wine and 5 plates followed by rice pudding, all delicious, the black pudding was a favourite. Reasonable prices. Would highly recommend and will return if in York again. Wish I had taken more photos, I was too busy eating 🙃

Authentic Spanish tapas - really tasty!Unfortunately we did have to wait 45 minutes for a table but they took our name and number to call us when the table was ready.We got 6 tapas between 2 of us which was plenty; 5 probably would have done as some of the portions are quite sizable! Would definitely come back.

This tapas restaurant is a real hidden gem, and well worth a visit. They dont take bookings for groups smaller than 8 but we chanced it on a Wednesday evening and managed to get a table for four just as the place was getting busy. The menu covers all the classic tapas bases, but the quality of the food was certainly above the norm. The albondigas, pork with rosemary and croquetas were all particularly goodThe gin menu is extensive and theres a creative cocktail menu. The staff were very friendly and service was very quick. Highly recommended.

Incredible Spanish tapas, lovely selection of beers and wine with great staff to boot!

Terrific tapas bar an authentic food and drink experience and as they claim with a modern twist, and a hint of Yorkshire. The menu isnt extensive but gives s good combination of Spains varied flavours including meats, fish, vegetables and cheesediscoveries and seasons inspire our menus whether it is marinated grilled fish and meats This can be combined individually or from their selection of platters and add to this a good selection of wines, beers and cocktails all adds up to a great evening.
