Soo Locks Boat Tours & Dinner Cruises in Thessalon
Description
Privilege
This boat tour was enjoyable, the crew super friendly, and we learned so many interesting facts about the locks and the area! Definitely recommend.
MoreIt was fun to go out on the boat and get a thorough tour. The boat tour had so much detailed information and very knowledgeable. I was amazed to learn the history and todays operations. The people working on the boat tour did an amazing job. They have a sense of humor as well. Great customer service. They will answer any and all questions you may have. The tour does cost money but it is worth the experience. I would recommend doing the boat tour if you are traveling this way!
MoreExcellent tour of the locks. The boat takes you through the locks on the America side and the Canadian side of the Saint Marys River. The docent gave an interesting history of the commodities that moved through the locks. The mining of Iron, coal and other minerals in the area. The construction of the locks. All very fascinating!
MoreGreat experience, great people and if youve never gone through the Soo Locks, NOWS the Time! 😀
MoreGreat experience, tour boat went through locks with a ship. Another ship was in lock next to us and ship waiting on both sides waiting to go through. Tour narrator was great, informative and funny. Awesome!
MoreVery slow boat ride. We just really wanted to go through the locks. It took 2 1/2 hours, too much other info.
MoreA very informational, yet fun experience.Just beautiful! The entire family enjoyed it...
MoreGreat ride. Lots of info. Snacks and 🚻 bathrooms
The tour was great and the staff was very knowledgeable. We were quizzing one of the staff members and she had so much knowledge it was great. We were lucky enough to have a cargo ship come in the lock with us on our way back.
MoreA pleasant, informative and enjoyable experience from the woman who sold us our tickets to the final docking. Highly recommended. Also theres a spacious waiting area with restrooms, a cafe, and a gift store as well as an information area. Plenty of parking and close to downtown and close to the shipwrecks museum.Thank you for a great experience.
MoreA fun and neat experience children over the age of four will enjoy as well . Their is a snack shop and it takes about 2hrs . But is something I recommend at least once in a lifetime.
MoreBlue and Gold the way to go. The Famous Soo Locks are the original and still the best. You feel right at home and they give an informative tour. Dont forget to get the book. School teachers will love the book for class discussions on Michigan history.Did I mention we had a blast snacks drinks dancing laughing just a Good Time.
MoreThis was a very informative ride. It’s slow and relaxing so nothing too crazy so kids can enjoy too. You can get up and walk around the boat too which is nice. Plus it’s just really cool to be in the locks and see how they work! Educational and informative.
MoreLoved biking through the small town along the River. Soo locks boat tour was so much fun. My son, who is 10, liked the tour and the ship museum next door. There is also a trout pond for kids, which was a lot of fun. We caught two 16 inch trout! We would definitely go back but would explore more of the town that is set back away from the locks.Great tour guide of the locks! Go!
MoreGreat experience! The crew was so informative, friendly and helpful. A must-do experience if visiting!
MoreGreat tour. Awesome Captain Ron and Peggy were very informative and super nice people. Joe was also great. Everyone at Soo Lock Tours was great. I would recommend this tour if your in the area
MoreLoved this tour! Our captain and his wife gave such a wonder tour with great insights into the region. We even had a good dance for the crowd watching at the locks it was so much fun.dont mistake it for the dock #2 company make sure you do the original soo lock tour!
MoreA fun boat ride and tour of the Soo Locks and St Mary’s River. They couldn’t do the tour of the steel mill or the Canadian Lock due to government restrictions. That would have pushed the rating to 5 stars. The tour guide did a good job for the 90 minute tour; filling time with history while we waited for the clearance to enter the locks.
MoreThe trip through the locks was great and the narrative is the narrative explaining everything that went on in the area you learned a lot about the Soo American side and Canadian side wonderful trip
MoreThe tour was informative and lets about 90 minutes. Traversing the locks was less dramatic than expected, but you get to see interesting sights and other boats.
MoreMy husband and I loved this interesting and informative tour on the boat, about the US and Canada and how in the locks that they have to drain out the water and add water when you go from Lake Huron to Lake Superor. Our boat actually went into the locks with three other boats like ours. We did get a three hour trip instead of two hours, because a large tanker ship had to pass through the locks, so we waited a bit. We had hot chocolate on July 24, 2022, while on the boat and chips. If you wanted to warm up you could go down to the lower deck and see out. A very windy cool day for us partly cloudy about 62 degrees. It was 78 degrees the next day. We brought water proof jackets, so that really helped. Its not normally this cool, but always be prepared. This trip I would give it a 10 out of 1-10, with 10 as the highest degree of fun and adventure.
MoreGreat tour of the Soo Locks. Loved it! The captain really knew her stuff! ❤️
Beautiful tour on the St. Marys River. Crew was knowledgeable and friendly. Tons of seating. Wonderful scenery
MoreEnjoyed tour. Nice staff, took about 2 hours. Learned history of the area and locks. Road the locks up and down.
MoreFabulous tour and very informative. AND they have adult beverages. The other boat tour company doesn’t!
MoreWe bought tickets before we went to the Valley Camp Museum. The people in the ticket office were fantastic, helpful and fun to talk with. Wasnt expecting buying tickets could be a fun experience. The actual Lock tour was great, I think we lucked out there was quite a bit of traffic in the river by the time we went. Very informative narrator she answered many questions passengers had.
MoreTook the last boat of the day. The crew was very friendly and fun. It was a great family experience.
MoreThe tour is great and pretty informative, and a great way to see freighters while in the Soo. Prices are reasonable, but be sure to look for deals. My only gripes are as follows:When lining up to board your boat, there is almost no direction at the end of the dock. There is an announcer that will say final boarding but there is little to no information available dockside as to where you should be.There are a few parts in the tour where you are waiting for the locks to drain/fill where it is just silence. Seems like this would be a good time to talk about various vessels or other things to do in the area, or something. Just seems like there could have been more there.Overall a good experience, but I do also think it could depend on your captain and the narrator.
MoreWe went on this tour twice this summer. The staff is very friendly and the tour was interesting and we learned a lot. The only thing to note is that even with a scheduled time, the boat may get caught in the locks and it may be delayed - just fyi if so you don’t book yourself to close with something afterwards. And they have beer and wine on the boat at the snack bar - was a perfect surprise!
MoreVery enjoyable tour, excellent sound system throughout the boat made the narration loud and clear. Informative. Very friendly and helpful crew. Snack bar and soft drinks, wine coolers available on board
Moregreat boat tours! first time for all 5 of us so it was a neat experience. we didnt have a full house so it was nice to be able to walk the boat a little more and have some room to explore.
MoreWhat a fun trip! Not exciting but hugely interesting and how often do regular landlubbers get to go through locks!?!
MoreSo worth trying its a wonderful boat ride. Going through the locks is fun
A wonderful time with this company. I will definitely recommend for others. Take the time to book online at a rate of $30 versus $33 in person. Do not pass on the opportunity. It’s a great time.
MoreVery informative and awesome tour. If you have ever wanted to visit any locks this is the place. Although the tour costs money it is worth it to just be in the locks. During my tour each way we shared the lock with a large freighter.
MoreIve been through the Soo Locks several times in my life, but I always enjoy it and learn something new. Our tour was a little longer than scheduled because of lock traffic. The tour boat had to wait for the locks to be available, so keep that in mind if you are on a tight schedule. There are only two locks operating these days, instead of the five locks that used to be available. Young children might get a little bored, but theres room to walk them around.
MoreWell, kind of loved it. Five stars tho!!!!The Soo locks is always a must see!!! No matter what. So so cool!!! The Locks, boat tour , the big ships coming in! That being said, Its sad to say since our last visit a few years ago, its not close to what it used to be. Run Down houses not as pretty. I would hope this review is seen and some action taken with all the money we and many , many others who drive miles to be here, because we LOVE IT would please start doing something to bring the Soo we know, historical, majestical, awesome!!! I get the economy, trust me. Not having the means by the locals to do anything to fix what they own. Government Grants are available if someone would put the work in to do it! ( I have done this for my area )But then whats the Historical Society for? Surely here should be number one!!!Limited sites historical and otherwiseAll closed! On a Monday. I enjoyed the small strip of cute shops and the big ships and locks. Saw a couple shipped come inShould be more pet friendly to be honest. We have a little one we never leave so that made it hard for hubby and I look at the very few sites. As far as lodging. DO NOT BOOK ECONO USED TO BE LOCK VIEW. THEY MAY BE FIXING UP WITH NEW OWNERS called "ADOBE" ( I believe a new franchise I think but we book 3 weeks in advance having stayed a few ago. First they r NOT CABINS! AND WE ARRIVED ON TIME With NOT ONE PERSON THERE TO CHECK US IN !! IT TOOK A WORKER TO FINALLY GET US IN PROBABLY THE DUMPIEST ROOM THERE WAS. DIRTY, OLD Dumpy...THANK Goodness IT WAS HERE at the Soo.. SO WE COULD Walk around. The price for what we got wasnt worth it. We paid less at a nice hotel with pool and jacuzzi.
MoreWe have done this tour twice now. It is so beautiful and relaxing. We have two little ones and they love it too! We do make sure we bring sweaters as it can get windy. We hope to do it again as we love visiting the Soo!
MoreSo much fun! Only complaint is that we only stayed in the locks and ventured slightly on the Canadian side. Was hoping for more Lake Superior side. But it is a “locks” tour so can’t complain. We got to float down the locks with a barge named chestnut! So cool.
MoreWe really enjoyed the tour and I appreciate the free shaded kennel for my dog. You just have to ask at the desk for a lock and fill out a form.
MoreGreat experience. Allow about 2 hours. Very educational with a detailed live narration by a crew member. The crew, including the captain, are more than willing to answer questions and are very welcoming. Passengers are able to bring their own bottles of water aboard. The is a snack bar with some grilled items, snacks and beverages available mid way during the tour. It can get breezy on the water. Currently (June 25, 2021locks #1 and #2 are operational. #3 and #4 are scheduled to be removed. An additional larger newly constructed lock will eventually be added. There is a great gift shop at the docks in the ticket window lobby. In the same area is a large vessel that serves as a museum. Allow a couple of hours to roam the ship.
MoreAbsolutely awesome. Great time and interesting narration. Really lots of fun. A must do if youre in the area. Knowledgeable staff enhanced the experience and the snack bar was a plus as well. Pro tip - sit on the port side of the boat for the best views, especially if youre on the lower level.
MoreWe greatly enjoyed our tour boat of the locks. Very informative and pleasant. Well worth the price of admission. Captain John was a great pilot, even extended the 90 minute ride to almost 2 hours. Thanks for a wonderful experience!
MoreThe tour was amazing from beginning to end. The staff was very nice and knowledgeable about the Locks and the surrounding areas. The entire staff was also so very kind and friendly to my service dog. The Captain was the best ever and it was really nice to chat for a few with him about his awesome job being a Captain. 5 stars!!!
MoreVery cool tour and nice information about things around the locks. Too see a 1000’ boat up close coming out of the lock then going through the lock. Very neat and cool sights that you can’t see from the observation deck.
MoreThis was really cool! Through the locks and short trips into the upper and lower St. Marys River. Learned some things about the area and cane right next to a 1,000 foot freighter! Very interesting.
MoreHighly Recommend! Crew is very informative and friendly. My 3 year old loves Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours, we just went on the fireworks cruise, the price and view cant be beat!! Will be returning soon for my sons 4th birthday!!! So much fun!
MoreGreat tour with lots of information on not only the canals but of different points of interest in the area along the water. Going though the locks was a fun relaxing experience and way to see the area.
MoreThe tour was 2 hours. Going through the Soo Locks we learned a lot of information about them. 22 million gallons and we were at surface level. My daughter was especially excited because not only was she taking a tour of the Soo Locks, she was also going into Canada even though we were not getting off the boat. 🚢
MoreGreat value. Nice leisurely cruise to and through the locks. Informative narration on landmark areas as you go. Best view is from top left side of the boat though there are 4 open windows downstairs offer an alternative perspective for those wanting to avoid the wind and chill of the lake breezes.
