Modern Japanese food, a teppanyaki bar and a sake tasting menu in a refined riverfront space.
Sono Japanese Restaurant Portside Wharf in Brisbane
Description
Privilege
Superb experience. We went here on short notice to celebrate a special occasion and was delighted by how professional and experienced the staff were. Food arrives fairly quick, flavours, presentation and portion sizes were great. The cocktail list is superb also, offering some of the most delicious drinks I think I have ever had in my life. Toilets were spotless and the entire dining experience was above and beyond 10/10!
MoreWe had Lunch at Sono Japanese restaurant. They are on the first floor opposite to the Dendy cinemas. The is the authentic Japanese fine dining restaurant. We booked the table reservation through their website without any issues. They have different seating arrangements including private rooms. If you like to have table with river view, need to booked in advanced. Food quality is great - fresh sashimi, well cooked Wagyu, yummy grilled eel and crispy delicious Tampura. Staffs are super friendly and attentive. Overall experience is Great and looking forward to come back and try more. Tip - for car parking ticket, the receptionist can give you the free parking ticket if you park in the basement car park.
MoreMe and my partner (who have a birthday 3 days apart hahawent to Sono Tuesday night for their 10 course Zen banquet. My partner had 10 paired sake and I had 5 paired mocktails.Firstly addressing the drinks! I review a lot of gins as a hobby and this place had FANTASTIC GIN SELECTIONS! I had a beautiful Komasa Komakin gin with soda and 🍋! Beautiful. Would recommend any of their gins though. The sake selection was absolutely beautiful. Everything paired excellently with the meal and theyd come out with the bottle to explain the flavours and let me write down the bottle name so we could review it 😀 My mocktails were so delicious! They also paired perfectly with the meals and were absolutely gorgeous. It felt like an experience alone just based on the drinks. Like what youd get at a wine tasting experience, but for Sake!Food wise, When I was looking at reviews I wasnt sure if Id feel full based on all the smaller sized meals, but I was sooo full by the end! Dont let the photo of the prawn deceive you, that bad boy was the size of 3-4 prawns COMBINED. Everything was delicious though. The seafood is soft, fatty and delicious. Probably the best quality Ive had in Brisbane. Their miso had such a depth of flavour compared to other restaurants. The cod literally flaked away as you ate it. So delicious. I love the extra flare that they add to the meals with the smokiness of the wagyu being cooked in front of you, the dry ice on the sushi platter and the delicious soup in a tea pot.Our favourites were probably the duck on the entrees platter, the broccoli tempura (that was So FLAVOURFUL), kingfish and salmon sashimi, cod, wagyu and nigiri platter. Its honestly difficult not to pick everything as a favourite, because it was ALL AMAZING.Our waitress was also lovely, I dont remember her name, but she was a short soft spoken lady and was absolutely adorable. You took care of us so well! Thank you! 🥰
MoreWe went for a spontaneous Date night after the movies and managed to dine at their sushi bar. Food was so good, quality reflects price 💯 service was great! Can’t wait to go back for tepanyaki!
MoreCelebrating my birthday at this very beautiful Japanese restaurant. We got a table with a water view. We had the Zen Course with 9 courses, I highly recommend to have the matching mocktail if you are not a small eater. Each mocktail really compliments the course and brings the dining experience to another level. The sashimi was very fresh and all the food was delicious! The waiters & waitresses were all very attentive and nice.
MoreFood was amazing but not sure about the service. Needed to wait over 30 minutes even i had a reservation
MoreAlways great customer service and great experience. All staffs are very helpful and kind.Vegan options available ask staff. We really enjoyed food and atmosphere Thank you so much.
MoreThe best salmon sahimi in Brisbane, by far. Incredible food, excellent service (thanks Asahi for being an awesome waiter with a beer name ;-). Always a pleasure to come in.
MoreHad the Thursday Chefs Premium Degustation session (8 courses), with the sake pairing (8), and it was absolutely amazing! Great service, amazing setting, superb food. Compliments to the chef for the selection and perfect preparation that went into the offering! Big thanks to the assistant floor manager, for sharing the history and flavour notes of the sake, and knowing how to pair all the drinks consumed! Extremely happy and would highly recommend the experience!
MoreThis restaurant should not be called Sono it should be re-named to soYES! 👌Came here with a group of 8 for a hens night & booked the private dinning area. We ordered the $98pp banquet menu.Quality - The quality of the food was amazing! Every dish that came out from the entree through to the dessert tasted so good! Japanese flavours, the combination of different textures, complimenting sauces, presentation & FRESH ingredients. The Chef has spectacular attention to detail.Customer service - Staff was friendly & accommodating :We also asked if we can change some flavours in the banquet menu because of personal preference. Our waiter was able to accommodate.Ambience - Large restaurant, impressive decor with beautiful views. The restaurant was lively and had great vibes.Thank you team Sono 😊 You delivered MORE then what was expected. I would definitely come back & book again. Thank you for the outstanding service 👏 what a great experience 👏
MoreAs expected the food and service was exceptional. We had the banquet and had to exchange some items for Gluten Free options. The Gluten free alternatives were fantastic and definitely a high quality substitution (not always the case in other restaurants). Daniel our waiter was very professional and helpful. Highly recommend.
MoreHadnt been here for about a decade and still as wonderful, delicious and memorable as the first times back in 2008/9. Highly recommend the Sono Degustation as a great intro to the wonderful skills and selections Sono has on offer. Cocktails also amazing.
MoreVery fresh traditional nigiri. The miso cod is superb. The skin is vey crispy and the flesh is juicy and tender, and a lot less sweet than the same dish from other restaurants. The service is very friendly and caring.
MoreTHE best Japanese restaurant ever. Also thanks to our amazing waiter Asahi...you made our experience even more enjoyable 😉
MoreAbsolytely spectacular sushi, the professionalism off the staff was incredible as well. Complete menu knowledge of all items, prices, and variants.
MoreHad a lunch with a group with Sono Tasting Experince as set menu. The oysters and rhe black cod were the highlights for me. Fresh, delicious and great presentation.
MoreBooked for the family special gathering and had a private dining room. Very enjoyable experience and the Oysters were the best!
MoreMy go to place whenever I am in Brisbane and crave for fine dining Japanese food. Had the omakase. It was really worth it. No wonder it was full house.
MoreReally enjoy the Omakase dinner for our anniversary. Great food and customer service. Very cost-effective, highly recommend!
MoreWe go here so often as a family because the food is consistently delicious, beautifully presented and the service is very attentive. We have tried the teppanyaki and the A La Carte menu and cant fault either. I do hope they will add more volume in the cocktails because it is pricey for what they give you. That would be my only complaint but really they are delicious that I dont mind paying a bot more.
MoreDo yourself a favour, save your time for finding a better Japanese fine dining restaurant. This place is simply best there is.
MoreMy partner and I had the Zen Banquet, it was too die for. The food was glorious, the service was wonderful and informative, and while I thought I didnt like Sake, it turns out I dont like cheap Sake. The Sake pairing with the Zen Banquet was fantastic, and complemented each course wonderfully.
MoreThe service is the best. Foods are really delicious. Good recommendations from friendly and considerate staff. The introduction before every dish were professional. Beautiful experience!
MoreWe got the 6 course tasting package for my partners birthday. She has a shellfish allergy and some of the courses had shellfish. Sonos chefs were very agile and came up with genuine alternative options that were well matched and had me a little envious, honestly. This place has spectacular attention to detail from the truly divine food to the ambience of the bathroom, and the concierge like experience of the service. The little things really matter to these guys. This place has ruined me for other restaurants.
MoreFirst of all the taste of the food are delicious. As a lady I don’t really think the dessert is not presentable, cause at my point of view when they are presenting deserve, they should ask every lady that do they really want cold dishes ?As the price what we paid not not really deserve what we should haveAbout the customer service I suggest they can improve better
MoreLarge restaurant, impressive decor with beautiful views of the Brisbane. While the food presentation and quality is good, the service is exceptional.
MoreI’m Japanese. I went for my birthday dinner. You can recognize what the REAL Japanese cuisine is. I usually disappoint when I go to Japanese restaurant in Brisbane, which is non real or fake japs food they serve. But here SONO is literally real Japanese cuisine I feel like staying traditional Japanese place.Cocktails are a bit overpriced but worth to try. Shiso southside is omg soooo nice.
MoreGreat food. Definitely coming back. Especially for the wagyu and oysters. 🫶🏽✨👏🏽
MoreThe food was fine. Only the black cod was too salty and the flavour of the matcha latte was vague. (But I still recommend the black codExtremely disappointed with the ambience. Very noisy and a kid next to our table was playing YouTube on her phone loudly and running around but seems no one thought it was a problem. The service was good and the servers were very friendly. However, I don’t know why the staffs need to place the dirty dishes from other tables on the bench behind and very close to me. They always came around my table and stood so close to me to organise those dirty dishes which is uncomfortable. I am sorry to give two stars as I expected so much more from SONO as a high quality place that’s not limited to food only. Not an expect ambience at this price. I doubt that I should go for the lunch again.
Morethis was legitimately the best food i have ever eaten. i came here for a school excursion and we each got a set meal with teriyaki chicken, tempura vegetables, pork belly, salmon and tuna sashimi, sushi rolls and pork gyoza. we also got steamed rice, miso soup and matcha ice cream with red bean paste. i highly recommend. the presentation and flavour were top notch. thank you to the chefs and waiters for this amazing experience that i will treasure for a lifetime
MoreMy favourite Japanese restaurant in Brisbane. Even though it is quite pricey, it is worth the money and I only come for occassions. The food, service and experience was great, every visit was enjoyable. I love oysters and sashimi but their other dishes are great too.
MoreExcellent value for money. Had the zen course (10 disheson a window side table. You need to take off your shoes.
MoreBoth the restaurant and food were beautiful. The tasting menu had a good spread of Japanese food from fresh sashimi to grilled Wagyu. There was also a large variety of cocktails and mocktails to choose from. The staff there were very professional and knowledgeable about everything they served.
MoreTried 10 course omakase. Nice presentation and wonderful food! Wont hesitate to recommend it to friends.
MoreWe chose the 10 course set meal and it was absolutely amazing. Everything from the food to decor of this restaurant was stunning. You wont be disappointed :)
MoreWe had a Zen (10course dinner with matching mocktails. Amazing food - showcasing quality ingredients with trueness of Japanese cuisine.
MoreLove dining at Sono. Private dining rooms, degustation, traditional styled tables with modern flair and teppanyaki.Of all the experiences Teppanyaki was my least favourite. Tepanyaki was fun but probably would not repeat as I felt the food prepared for private dining was preferable and more custom. Id recommend lunch and dinner on a la carte or degustation any day.Attentive staff, great ambiance and an incredible selection of fine foods! The tuna toro/otoro and Japanese wagyu are my top recommendations; A must have, must try!Arigatoo gozaimasu Sono Team
MoreSome say Sono is the best Japanese fine dine in Queensland. We booked a table 2 months in advance of our trip to Queensland (booking essential). Coming from Sydney, our expectations were high and they were met and exceeded by much more. One of the best Japanese fine dines in the country hands down. The Zen course is fantastic. Great services and ambience, a very memorable night at Sono. Highly highly recommended!
MoreTheir 10-course cooking was perfect and the staff was well Trained. They deserve tips.
MoreAmazing decor, staff, service, food, and atmosphere. Best Japanese weve had in years and look forward to dining often.
MoreThe food was delicious and beautifully presented, the atmosphere was lively and the service was fast and professional! Our waiter Ben was absolutely outstanding in his presentation and manner, we couldn’t of asked for a better waiter!
MoreWow, what an experience from the setting to service and outstanding Japanese cuisine. The matched sake and kaiseki course exceeded expectations. A must visit!
MoreThis is one of my most exclusive Omakase dine in experience in Brisbane @sono_restaurant maximum 6 seats per night. I do recommend doing wine/ sake/mocktail pairing. Definitely really good drinking time with their experience bar staff.Thank you Annie, Benny, Jenny and Lilain for my best companies on dinner that night. These are my highlight of this course that I like.🐂Grilled skewer showcasing two types of wagyu -🦞Fresh Lobster 3 ways - tempura, nigiri, miso soup.🦪Abalone two ways sashimi style with abalone liver OR shabu shabu in the kaminabe (paper pot- a real treat for the sensesWe sat in private tatami room with the shoes off which really take me back Japan. It is 3.5 hours but you will definitely enjoy so much without even look on the time.::#nutsjourney#omakase#brisbaneomakase#japanese#sushi#omakaselover
MoreA must have experience for anyone in Brisbane or visiting. Their food is to die for and their service is impeccable. The meat is halal and their dishes are fresh and of the highest quality. The restaurant nails the atmosphere and the staff are very professional and knowledgeable. The prices are extremely fair for this level of service and experience, and I would recommend this place to anyone looking to celebrate or have a perfect night out
More@sono_restaurant had been on my list of places to try for a while so we decided to try them out! 🙌Initially we were planning to go with the Zen course but I saw they a limited time Omakase so we went ahead with that instead. The prices are as follows :• Omakase Course (No Drinks- $196• Omakase w/ Sake pairing - $296• Omakase w/ Premium Wine & Sake Pairing- $346We picked the first option (omakase onlysince we drove there. We got a few mocktails instead 😌The restaurant is located in the Portside Wharf right next to the river. The ambience is amazing inside! We got a private dining room even though it was just the two of us which was really nice! The dishes were all amazing and the presentation was excellent! There was a lot of instagrammable content 😍The staff was amazing in explaining to us about each of the dishes. It really made the experience so much better! 💯If you ask me if this is worth $200, I’d say yes, because you’re paying for the overall experience. This is subjective so let me know what you think! 🙌A few things to remember -• There is validated parking up-to 3 hours but if you go over 3 hours you may have to pay ~$25 🚘• Bookings are essential and you also have to pay $100 deposit per person for omakase 📲• Omakase is only available on Tuesday-Thursday. Teppanyaki is only available Friday-Saturday 🗓
MoreA lovely refined and quiet resturant, with creative cocktails and dishes. I had the Sono course (six course meal, $99), which was well priced and portioned. The dishes were flavoursome, presented well and the seafood was very fresh.
MoreFresh ingredients, beautifully presented, the soft shell crab is always my favourite!however,it kinda pricey, the cake dessert isn’t my cup of tea coz it is a bit over sweet .
MoreHad the Zen tasting course, $135/pp featuring 10 courses. The dining experience was very enjoyable. The interior of the restaurant was beautiful, it featured many traditional Japanese styled designs. The service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. The food presentation and plating were beautifully served and they tasted just as amazing as they look and all the ingredients were very fresh. One small downside was that the Donbinmushi was a little too salty.
MoreHave been coming to Sono Japanese Restaurant for more than 10 years now and they never disappoint. We are lucky enough to alway get the river view room, there is a minimum spend of $500 but 100% worth it.Recommend their large sashimi to share, sukiyaki, teriyaki duck, wagyu beef and coffee (surprisingly good coffee in a Japanese restaurant)!
MoreBeautiful location and decor, friendly staff and tasty food. We asked for extra ginger and the waitress went out off her way to make sure we had as much as we wanted. The sashimi platter was fresh and the presentation was lovely. The sushi was delicious.
