Somerset Cottage - Restaurant in Tauranga, New Zealand
Beautiful setting with the tastiest food, 10/10. Highly rate the Beef Cheeks.
Had an amazing stay in the studio next to the cottage last night. What a hidden gem. Wondered across to the cottage for an unbelievable dinner. Thanks to the entire team for an amazing anniversary experience 10+ out of 10
Beautiful atmosphere with delicious food. Everything we ate was exquisite - I was especially a fan of the pumpkin gnocchi. I also appreciated the very attentive and friendly service. Couldnt recommend more!
High end cuisine very well executed. Complimentary flavours well balanced, good wines, superb desserts. Expensive? - as it should be !
Love this restaurant. Local fav for over 20 years. Owners go the extra mile always as they have for 30 years.
Very good food. Much enjoyed. Try the licorice ice-cream.
We have heard a lot about this Restaurant. Unfortunately it was a very disappointing dining experience. Staff not very friendly at all, did not even inquire as to how we enjoyed our meal. Food is definitely not really up to a standard for a fine dining restaurant. Entrees over priced and quite strange, I had the Squid, about 8 finely sliced pieces lost in a watery boring liquid with peanuts, don’t have it it’s not that good.I found the Eye Fillet Steak in a very strange presentation, it sat in a sort of a watery curry tasting source/ gravy, I enjoy a nicely cooked rare Steak, unfortunately mine was medium and quite impalatble. Sadly very disappointed and will not come back.Tony Woodard
Amazing serviceAbsolutely mouthwatering entree...only to have an even better mains...the lamb was perfect... Thank you for the beautiful evening...
Lovely meal, excellent wine recommendations and then the chef dropped me and my 90 year old mother home when the taxi was going to be a 30 min wait!Thank you so much.
I have been on the hunt for fantastic food in Tauranga, and I’ve finally found it here. I’ve been to all of the “popular” places but Somerset Cottage takes the cake. Exquisite food. Flavours to die for. I highly recommend. Least I forget the young man serving us was so polite and professional!
Magnificent meal. Flavours superb. Will definitely come again
Amazing starter and main but the meals sizes are small so was still hungry and then dessert came and was left disappointed....
Nice food and friendly staff. Very popular but pleasant atmosphere.
Heard lot of people talk about Somerset Cottage, read a lot of reviews. You just know when something is good as it’s so hard to get a booking due to the demand. I have to say we found the staff, owner, experience and food all outstanding!! We had the bread and pork belly bun starter, duck and steak . OMG wow. Best meal out we’ve had in the 15 years we’ve been in NZ. We will definitely be going there again. Well done team. Outstanding!!!
Loved it. Sat outside on the lush verandah and enjoyed superb food and service. Clearly this is the locals favourite. So good in so many ways.
We had an amazing meal, delicious flavors. Highly recommend the squid and crispy potatoes..gluten free options and vegetarian. Great service, attentive but not intrusive. 😁👍
The steak and the brown sauce!!!!! The best kind!!! Always ask for additional brown sauce for the potatoes! And the blue cheese souffle ate also divine... We go again multiple times. Thanks!
Totally fantastic! Superb food and service. Love the licquorice ice cream. Thanks for a lovely evening.
The food was amazing and service delightful. Busier and noisier than what we had anticipated for an anniversary dinner but obviously very popular
Have been to Somerset a few times again recently and had forgotten just how good this place is, food is always amazing and Annes front of house skills second to none! We have celebrated some significant occasions over the years at Somerset and look forward to a few more in the not too distant future!
Great service and food. We had the duck, gnocchi, potato skin. Everything is perfect. Even their ginger beer is the best weve had!
Àbsolutely....top of the Pops! Fabulous menu selection. ( Seems to have changed). Although l never asked the question!. Oh, please get a group together and rock up. You just wont believe it. Fabulous service too.
One of the best classic restaurantGood foods and nice serviceHighly recommend
It is always a pleasure to come and eat at this beautiful restaurant. The owners actively work and look after their clients. Service is outstanding. Well done
Went for lunch. Two ladies. Luckily no men as the portions are very small. The steak was small. Only comes with three onion rings and a salad to share. Very nice sauce. The duck came with Kumera mash and the salad to share with a nice sauce. The duck was a better choice. Over priced. The service was only ok. Expected excellent service but didn’t get it. It’s a shame. I don’t recommend.
Their enthusiasm outweighed their ability. The quality of the food did not match the price asked. The service was friendly and courteous.Would be difficult to recommend.
I went to Somerset Cottage for my birthday dinner last night and It was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time. My partner and I dine out a lot and we had been meaning to come to Somerset for some time - It did not disappoint. The food was exceptional, refined and every element of the dishes we ordered was exceptional. The service was outstanding - everyone was incredibly good at their job. We are usually plant based but decided to splurge and eat meat but I really appreciated the fact they had a vegan menu. I would highly recommend dining at Somerset Cottage.
I attended my very first cook class here and what an amazing experience it was! A small group of us had a fun and relaxed day as we watched and learnt how to make these Christmas inspired recipes. I highly recommend the cooking classes they run, the amazing couple that run the class are happy, polite, funny and relaxed, they work together so well and are happy to answer any and all questions which makes for a great environment and fun experience and in the end you get to eat the food! Will definitely be back again. Thank you both so much :D
Fabulous food, great staff, comfortable environment. A great choice for a place to have dinner.
Booked in late afternoon but thankfully was able to get a table Service was excellent and good was marvellous. Have dined here once before a few years ago and was looking forward to twice baked cheese souffle Did not disappoint. Thankyou
We got a fish curry and a goat curry (both were recommendations from online and the waiterand some nan bread (i was greedy and order the garlic butter and cheese nan bread... lol just stick to the normal one as this one was not authentic anymore). fish curry was a coconut milky base and oh so fragrant... but too spicy so i couldnt have too much.. the goat curry was killer good too.
Unfortunately, it was a very disappointing dining experience. Staff ignored multiple requests to bring a drinking straw for my toddler and a glass of wine for my sister. Food is not really up to standard for a fine dining restaurant. Sadly, will not come back.
This was our first experience of Somerset Cottage and it did not disappoint! The prices are reflective of a fine dining experience which is exactly what you get.Somerset do what they do really well. Ive been there dozens of times over the years and just the other day for another lovely lunch. Cheese souffle, excellent goats cheese pasta with a brown butter sauce, and a wonderful black bean soup
Well from the parking area well kept gardens and the very welcoming entrance you know you are in for a great treat. Then there are the staff that greets you as you walk in, I might add please book ahead. Table layout is good and the seats are comfortable, the ambience is excellent for talking and dining. Food is impeccable melts in your mouth, shows how much the owners truly care and love what they do. Will book again.
Somerset do what they do really well. Ive been there dozens of times over the years and just the other day for another lovely lunch. Cheese souffle, excellent goats cheese pasta with a brown butter sauce, and a wonderful black bean soup. If youre into cutting edge kitchen histrionics then this isnt the place for you but if you like classic food immaculately made from fresh high-quality local ingredients then its the best in Tauranga.
The service was friendly and prompt even though it was a busy Saturday night. Three of us ordered the fresh snapper with the other person ordering the lamb shank. The vegetables that went with it were tasty and the crispy potato skins are a regular favourite. For dessert we ordered the light lime and pineapple dessert and for the liquorice lover he devoured the liquorice ice cream. The wine and drinks list is impressive also. Would definitely dine here again.
From Auckland we arrived there for dinner with some local friends who recommended it - and we were not disappointed. The service was friendly and prompt even though it was a busy Saturday night. For dessert we ordered the light lime and pineapple dessert and for the liquorice lover he devoured the liquorice ice cream. The wine and drinks list is impressive also. We have been coming to Somerset Cottage for approximately 20 years and we have always had a great experience and have never been disappointed. Our latest visit was once again fantastic, souffle was superb, proteins were perfection, sides so good, desserts delicious, drinks delectable, superior service and very reasonable prices considering the quality. We will return again and again.
Fantastic meal. We both had the duck. Best duck we have eaten. We shared the Licorice icecream which was really nice. The chocolate coated orange slice complimented it beautifully. Just wished we had a piece each instead of half piece each.
Was so looking forward to going here as had heard great reviews but we were disappointed. Food average. Menu small and surprised by amount of heavy winter dihes on the menu considering it was summer. Best part of main course was the side of vegetables which was a cucumber salad very nice and freshing. The decor was very average, had expected more especially from other reviews and prices you pay. We were inside as dinner time but balcony looked nice. Very little atmosphere. Wait staff polite but water on table never refilled. Went for our daughters birthday treat, had mentioned when booking and they said would put a sparkler on her desert they forgot.Wont be rushing back.
Tonight we tried the new changing weekly menu. All the old favourites are there but the paradise prawns with a spicy boondi and tartare sauce was superb.Crunchy little balls of poppy crunch, beautiful sauce and the lovely prawns.Dont miss it in this week.I could have stopped eating after the entree -delicious.However the rest was good too.Great semifreddo. Thanks.
We were disappointed with the service tonight. The food was excellent as always but we all felt unwelcome, and the staff treated us poorly. We asked to have the music turned down slightly, to enable discussion, this request was met with a solid no, from the manager sitting down, waiting to go home.Drinks were rudely plonked down on the table, only two menus on the table and when we asked for more menus it seemed an effort on their behalf to deliver them.I asked if they served cocktails and was met with the following remark: "We are not a cocktail bar!" What a condescending way to speak to a customer.Having been a regular visitor to Somerset in the past and bringing visitors, Ill not bring anyone again, or go along again.Terrible experience, and leaves a bitter aftertaste in what should have been a joyful celebration of a pregnancy with friends.
my partners diner was alright, mine however the squit was minimalistic and flavours were in the peanuts, the duck was not the scrispy skin and again flavours were hard to find and certainly not in the roasted vedge. for the price of $140 not the place to enjoy flavours, staff did not inquire as to how we enjoyed the meal, so overall flavourless and cold care
The stunning food that is served is unfortunately overshadowed by the poor customer service. Before we even sat down we were rudely greeted by the owner of the restaurant demanding us to shut the door, even though our group was still exiting the taxi. Apart from the condescending attitude from the owner and lack of class and attention to detail from the wait staff, the food was beautiful. Such a shame...
Had a lovely dining experience here. The interior is light, warm and airy inside the cottage. There is plenty of spacing between the tables so you don’t have to talk over other tables conversations. The waiters were very courteous and friendly. We started the evening with a Gimlet Gin from the extensive beverage list and enjoyed smoked tea chicken spring roles and a tasty zingy squid starters, both very enjoyable with lots of flavour surprises. For our mains roast duck, kumara mash and vegetables and a lamb shank, both beautifully cooked and enjoyed with a glass of wine. Dessert a beautiful baked apple in pastry and a sticky date pudding. A thoroughly enjoyable meal, service and ambience. Plenty of parking beside the building and in the street.
Eye fillet and chicken liver are excellent. Nice and quite atmosphere.
Yes a very nice place to have dinner, great food and wine list. Very relaxing and good service. Love going there always, have never been let down. Food cooked just perfect.
Been here a few times, the food is always lovely. We had the pork buns to start, along with prawns from the weekly menu. We followed that up with the duck and steak from the staples, which were both delicious and well cooked.
Friendly attentive yet discrete staff, delicious food - familar classics with an individual twist. Completely obvious why it was recomended to us as a local favorite for special occasions. Relaxed and welcoming but not casual atmosphere.
Always a fantastic meal at Somerset Cottage. If you are visiting Tauranga or near by it is definitely worth a visit. Really good food and friendly, attentive service. Highly recommended. Cant wait until we are back again.
