Sombreros Mexican Cantina - Mexican restaurant in Queenstown, New Zealand
Amazing mexican restaurant, super friendly staff.I had both the vegan burrito and the vegan tacos. Both really good.Check out their lunch menu !
Ive dined at Sombreros Mexican Cantina twice now and I have to say that the service has been great both times. The atmosphere is awesome (a tribute to traditional Mexican cantina... well at-least i think it is....and they have a wood fire heater that keeps the place toasty warm, I have to disclose that i found the food to be just okay, but my mate (pictured belowthat has been to Mexico absolutely loved it "buenos nachos" he said ... But we both agreed that the the bucket of 6 Coronas for $45 was awesome!! Enjoy your meals amigos!
What an amazing place! We ordered the fajitas for two but you could probably share between three. So much food! The food was incredible and the service was brilliant. Very accommodating for a large group at short notice too. Will definitely be back on our next trip. Thank you!
Had the nachos and they were really good. The only bad thing was the bathrooms and how cold it was in there.
The tacos were good, enchiladas were ok. Margaritas were disappointing, they tasted good but were lacking in Tequila. I had the Coronarita which is a pitch of margarita with a Corona tipped up into it. It was about the equivalent of a single margarita back home.
A great place providing good food with great service. The restaurant is well presented as the owners have themed it as a Mexican restaurant. I really enjoyed my time having a meal there and thoroughly recommend that you give it a go.Its upstairs in the Queenstown CBD which provides a good view of the street below. Worthy of a visit in my humble opinion. See the photo I took as it gives you a great view of the restaurant.
This is not like the Mexican Restaurant in Christchurch which specialized in their own sauce creations and interpretation on Mexican cuisine (which I loved rating them a FIVE star). These folks are much more traditional Mexican with a twist. The twist is these folks have improved on the Mexican culinary experience and presentation than what I find in North Carolina or Texas.I should note that this place is NOT easy to find as well as it does make one wonder where in the world am I going?. My safety did come into mind on occasion via the winding, twisting and bizarre direction my way through crevices, turns and climbing stair way... but my adventurous side won! The place is staffed by a wonderful young crew of three.. and.... there is one young lady from Chile who actually speaks Spanish! The service is great and refreshing...food is great.... and the Mango marguerite is delicious... all two liters! And ... the price.... is more reasonable than anywhere you will find in Queenstown.
Not suitable for vegans! Ordered Vegan burrito bowl and was served rice and beans with coleslaw. It was hugely disappointing and to add the diluted burrito version was not even tasty. I tried to give feedback to the server who just shrugged off saying that’s the recipe. It was 21$ down the drain. Refrain!
Perfect dinner location for large groups, convenient being able to pre book tables there. Never had an issue with food quality, they catered to the needs of one of our group members (being celiac), more than happy to do so. Highly recommend dining here. Staff were great, had some good laughs with them.
Service was okay. They were relatively family friendly. They have 2 high chairs for you to use which is really nice. Madam Woos place only had 1. For 3 adults and 1 baby, it cost about $91 NZ. Its quite an expensive place and the food was just alright. We ordered the 3 cheese quesadlila, beef and pork enchiladas, beef nachos, ceviche taco, and pork taco. All the meat dishes were dry except for the beef nachos. The rice was over cooked. The cheese on the nachos and already hardened by the time it arrived at the table. I had to ask the wait staff to replace the water jug/bottle and for extra napkins to be refilled. The place wasnt that busy but I think they just happen to work at a slower pace and less attention to detail. Of course this is no 5 star restaurant but slightly better service would have been greatly appreciated. One weird thing is that the entire restaurant is not evenly lit. I found that to be a little amusing. One good thing is that they accept AMEX. This place is prob the only mexican food place in town so you dont really have options/choices. Its an okay place for the given environment. As I spend more time in Queenstown, it feels more like a ski/snowboarding resort place. The price of food definitely reflects that.
Quite enjoyable! Very quiet on a Wednesday night, though. I had the chicken nachos and they were amazing, but the portion size is large— share with a friend!
Service was OK - not exactly friendly. “Spicy chicken wings” starter was atrocious. I think the chicken was boiled. My friend’s nachos were terrible (according to him). My quesadillas were disappointing. My sour cream dip had a hair on top. They weren’t busy either (there was one other table occupied for half the time we were there). Once we were the only table, the music volume was turned up which drowned our conversation. Will not return.
Really great meal. Had a jug of beer and pork quesadilla each. The food was really tasty. It came out quickly and was well priced. I’ll be back
Always a great feed. Really reasonably priced and the staff are friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is bright and friendly. A good location for couples or families wanting a quick and cheap dinner or lunch. They also do takeaways
We came here in a large group as part of a hens party. Prior to our visit the staff were so accommodating. They allowed us to set up games and had jugs of margarita waiting on the table for us. The service was exceptional. Thanks for an awesome night.
Good meal with nice flavours and pleasant service and surroundings.
Very tasty! Not very spicy but that might have been out fault for not asking for spicier food. I cant comment on the authenticity, but it tasted awesome and the options are really generous for the price, especially in Queenstown. No salsa verde, though,
Nice cosy place, but let down by very slow service. Drinks did not arrive before food and we had to ask for them againFood despite being a simple order for 2 came 5min apart, only just warm. Seems like more staff is needed to run the place right.
The food is terrible. The staff is friendly. The tortilla chips were stale and obviously straight from a bag. Not home made and just warmed up. The Spanish rice is almost sweet and not remotely “Mexican” cuisine. Beans were firm. Nothing was well spiced. The margaritas didn’t even taste like lemon or lime. Just water and cheap tequila.I’ve tried the other Mexican restaurants in Queenstown and they do things much better. Wouldn’t waste my money here again.
Service took a very long time. At least three other tables got their food before us. We didnt order a larger meal than the others. 2 burritos and 2 Tacos. Whole thing ended taking over an hour from the point we sat down to the point of food in front of us. No explaination. Had to ask several times about when our food was coming out. Good food. Small potions.
Loved the service! Super nice waitress. Loved our food too, but, portion could be a little bigger. I absolutely fell in love with the Mexican soft drink, guava flavor was delicious. For all Mexican lovers, go here!
This place was absolutely amazing! Had my niece with me and she made a bit of a mess , I offered to clean up if I could have a cloth etc... the lady who was serving us said not to worry about it . She brought a big box of toys over for her also . The food was amazing 😍😍 great environment, fantastic food and absolutely amazing service !!! Ill be coming back here to eat when Im next in Queenstown!!!
This place is great. Stopped in on a whim since we were mixing Mexican food. I was very impressed with the Ceviche Taco - probably the single best taco I have ever had. They also served the food with a variety of hot sauces and the Kiwi Fruit hot sauce was spectacular. Also they have $6 beers on tap. Great place, great food, great service. I would definitely go back.
I came in 2013 and had a wonderful experience! The people were so nice; and the food was so tasty! We came back twice. So on my visit back to Queenstown in July I thought it would be wonderful to visit my favourite restaurant in Queenstown. I WAS WRONG! The decor hadnt much changed, but the food had. The staff ignored my father when he wanted to get some sour cream for his main, they mucked up at least half of our order. I got vegetarian instead of the meat I wanted for my nachos. Disappointed.
Where to even start with this place? They take your order and it is an insanely long wait for your food to come out, even though the restaurant is almost empty. Then you are served the most watery flavorless food and you are left thinking "I didnt know you could get Mexican so wrong" All I can say is dont waste your time or money.
Have eaten here multiple times over the past six years, unfortunately has gone way downhill on my last visit.Food was very poor, chilli con carne was shredded beef which wasnt shredded(?). Enchiladas were tasteless, shame really as the atmosphere was always fantastic. This time around it was largely empty, hope it makes a recovery, spoke at length to the manager about the quality of the food.Fingers crossed it turns around.
Amazing!! Had the tacos, homeMade corn tortillas were unreal not to mention the salsa!! Service was great! Would definitely recommend and will be back for sure!!
With so many great options in queenstown, would not recommend this one. Most bland Mexican food Ive ever had. Tacos lacked flavour, and salsa was just tomato paste from the supermarket. On a positive note kiwi margarita was delicious.
The worst tasting mexican food i have ever had. Appalling corn chips and salsa. The worst value for money meal i have had in my life. Their only saving grace was the margaritas which were delicious.
I ate here with a group, and nobodys food was tasty, never mind authentic. Not the tacos, not the burritos, not the nachos; they all lacked flavour, and the style was neither mexican or tex-mex. My impression is that someone looked at a picture of mexican food, and said "yeah, I can do that." Zero stars for the food, 1 star because our waitress was lovely.
Very disappointed last night. We used to come here every year when we came to Queenstown, but havent come to Queenstown for the last 4-5 years. To prevent other peoples disappointment I had to review and advise you to try somewhere else.(Specific examples: "Shredded" beef in our starter was barely cut let alone shredded and had no flavour, the cheese used was only suitable for a cheap pizza and I couldnt eat my main as the supposedly slow cook beef had been charred black.)
Portion sizes were decent and the waitstaff were really friendly. The food was overpriced and flavours underwhelming for what we ordered (chicken fajitas and beef nachos).
Not really that great. Avo guacamole tasted old and the salsa lacked flavour. Burrito beans were a bit hard and there was a salad in there which was weird for a burrito. Great service and atmosphere though
Environment was good felt like I was back in Mexico🇲🇽. Food however wasnt the best, maybe NZ does burritos different, but it really didnt even taste that great. Quac tasted old and didnt have flavour. Salsa was more of canned tomatoes in a dish instead of actual salsa. Overall will visit again if there are improvments.
Fabulous place. Food was wonderful. So flavourful. Love the decor, staff and atmosphere. Our group of 14 was well taken care of. It may or may not be "authentic" (never had authentic, so cannot compare), but i loved every morsel.
Came here with a group of 7 and had a great time. Our waitress was awesome and the food while more standard TexMex fare was definitely better than other places. My burrito was big and packed full of delicious pork. The lamb and kiwifruit taco was pretty darn great as well.
Hands down the worst Mexican food Ive ever had. Coming from the states we get authentic Mexican food being that were right above Mexico but Id even settle for Taco Bell over this. The food is bland to say the least and usually when serving beans they shouldnt be crunchy. Save your money and go elsewhere!
I had nachos with beans. It was the worst nachos Ive ever had. What Mexican restaurant cant make Nachos. The beans were tasteless, looked like they were straight out of a can.Given the tourists that go through Queenstown The food was very disappointing. The staff were nice . We wont be back
As far from authentic Mexican food as possible. Nachos were minced beef with cheese and corn chips I could have made at home. Quesadilla was average. Alcohol drinks are expensive here. I have 1/2 litre of margarita for $26, margarita flavour was nice but not very strong.
Decent vegan food. The service was a bit confusing, where she forgot stuff we ordered and had to run back and forth to ask kitchen. We also got pieces from a kitchen tool in one of our dishes.
I am not sure why this place has as good of ratings as it does. The service was incredibly slow, over an hour to get the main course. The server was a bit snippy and said it was because there was only one chef... but I have been to food trucks with only one person total and had faster service. Being from the US, having eaten at hundreds of Mexican restaurants and having spent a lot of time in the southwest of the US and in Central America, I may be a bit snobby when it comes to Mexican food, but the flavoring was the worst I have ever had at a Mexican restaurant. The mango salsa was actually pretty good (although you dont get muchand the guacamole was okay (not enough salt, spices or kick), but the beans and rice, chips, poutine, and nachos were all flavorless and/or under cooked. Our friend said the beef burrito was subpar and the chicken fajitas were not really fajitas, more just a plate of under cooked vegetables and chicken with some cumin on it, but if you Just wanted cooked chicken, not bad.
Very expensive "clamato" 23dls and very poor taste. After charging ridiculous prices she accused us of stealing a mug and not paying a drink, host probably got mistaken but it doesnt give her the right to speak bad to us. From a Mexican to a Mexican avoid the place.
Fantastic service and very child-friendly!Lovely owner-operators looked after my wife and I and our two children (toys are provided). Nice warm, homely vibe, good food, excellent choice of music (acoustic covers of top hits).Food + beverages were well priced and of good quality. If we lived in Queenstown this would definitely be a regular hangout!
Compared to the average Mexican restaurant, this is very sub par. The chicken used in the enchiladas, burritos and tacos were all bad quality thigh meat, with no breast meat being used this was on top of the fact that is was used very sparsely. The menu range was poor. The guacamole was awful - badly made and cheap - a green sludge. There was a non Mexican ambiance created by the house/lounge music. The views were pathetic and the value for money was to be laughed at, with everything being overpriced for what it was. IF YOU WANT PROPER MEXICAN, GO TO MEXICANOS IN CHRISTCHURCH!
Went there last night. Great Mexican theme. Music was definitely not mexican so we didnt feel that vibe. I had the nachos which were good, very filling. My fiancée had enchilada which she thought didnt have much to do with a real mexican enchilada. Came with a salad and the rice that was more of Chinese style rice. For the price paid we just thought it would of been a bit better considering theres a little mexican take away around the corner with traditional style food for a good price. Waitresses were very friendly. Nice location and great beverag.
Had the most unreal experience at this place! The service was impeccable, could not have asked for more and the food was also amazing! Chicken nachos definitely hit the spot! also the epic added bonus of being able to eat your food with a huge mexican sombrero on top of your head is pretty cool! If you love mexican food and want to sweet place to chill out and relax then sombreros is the place to go!
Great food, even if its for a great lunchtime feed like I had today. A lovely soft taco was served up with rice and beans and kept me going for the rest of the day.One of the older Queeenstown restaurants but has a fresh colourful mexican vibe. Its a testament to the food that its still going strong around 30 years later, and still a locals favourite for good reason.
Food was amazing, the highlight of my trip in fact. My wife ordered a smoothie and that was really good too.Nice atmosphere and warm and cosy too.Logo and street frontage are terrible; we almost didnt go because we assumed it was some kind of seedy bar. Lucky we did though.
The food is very good at this place, located right in the centre of the Queenstown city. I strongly recommend the tortillas with guacamole, enchiladas are great and quesadillas are amaaaazing. The service though is a little warped, we went twice, once they messed up or order and once they seemed understaffed. Otherwise Id give them a five. They did take care of the issue but not without making us wait, a little happier staff would go a long way. Thank you.
I was disappointed there wasnt many sides with the fajitas. The steak was cooked amazingly. But I would have liked more than lettuce, sour cream and rice. ... What happen to: black beans, guacamole, corn, tomato, jalapeños??
