Sombat's Fresh Thai Cuisine in Hilo

The staff was really friendly and nice. Pad thai was my favourite, pineapple rice(curry sourcewas for my husband.Crazy portion….. 2 main dishes with 1 starter(spring rollsseemed more than enough for 5 people honestly. We’re still full..!

The food here is amazing. Its currently takeout only but worth it. There are tables outside if you do want to sit and eat.

Google says they’re open from 4pm to 8pm but when I phoned them at about 4:45pm to place a pickup order the woman who answered gave me a rude attitude and said she’s closed.

Not open for dine in. Its been over a year since mask mandates have been affect. Jeesh!!!

Way too expensive and not really caring for customer experience. A plate of Pad Thai 22$!We’ve got a curry soup which was impossible for us to eat, too sweet, with giant vegetables not even cooked, so we asked to have something else but they charged us with that plate also if we didn’t touch it. And that soup was 19$!

Food was great! Not sure why they charged a 4% credit card transaction though.

The food was fantastic. I ordered pad thai beef and pepper chicken after a large bowl of Tom, yum soup. Child friendly too. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is that for some strange reason they are charging 4% extra even for debit card transactions.

I love this place - everytime I come to the Big Island, I eat here. The food is great, good portions, and the surroundings are very comfortable.

Love…love….love this place! Not only is the food great but they serve meals traditional family style. Two people can share one entree and still take away food.

Absolutely delightful. Was ready in 20 minutes on a Friday night during dinner time. Food is cooked perfectly, veggies and shrimp are perfect texture. Flavors are awesome. They are very sweet and made us feel great! Portions are huge too!

My only problem with this place is that I did not find out about its existence sooner. Probably the best Thai food Ive ever had, easily top 5.And I eat a lot of Thai food.

Tasty takeout! I’m a Thai food fanatic & this Coco soup was awesome. (Tom Kha). Got it with fried tofu, large portion.

The restaurant is only doing take out at the moment but service is fast. I got the chicken cashew nut Curry that was enough to probably feed three or four people for $24.the curry was delicious as well as piping hot with rice included. Would go back again.

Huge portion. Tasty and actually as spicy as they say. We got "hot" and it was HOT! Great veggies and juicy beef. Yum!

Incredible Thai food. I had not had good Thai food in almost two years and ordered the pad see ew, my favorite dish, and was not disappointed. The noodles were perfectly chewy and well seasoned. Currently they are takeout only and I had to wait about 20 minutes for my food, but it was well worth the wait.

Went here twice for dinner during our 2 night stay in Hilo. Some of the best Thai food we have had ( and we are from a place with amazing Thai food). Everything was fresh and flavorful. Also they are very accommodating of vegetarians and able to make any meal vegetarian. We had green curry, Tom yum, and spicy fried rice. The first two things were really good, I’m not a huge fan of fried rice to begin with but this one was really tasty and not greasy. Highly recommend this place!

Take out only on weekdays, great service, generous portions, but $20 for pad Thai is a bit of a splurge 😆

They are takeout only for now, from 4-8p. Ordered green papaya salad which was refreshingly delicious, Kang Penang with chicken was also yummy, and pad Thai with shrimp. All were very good and their medium has nice authentic heat. They even let you select Thai style hot. I’ve been to Thailand and Thai hot level is very hot so your are forewarned. When I asked for medium, he told me their medium is quite hot but that’s what we wanted. It was perfect for us. The portions are very generous and we could barely make a dent. Good value for your money and recommend this lovely business. Order!Parking is behind the plaza where Sombat is and you have to turn down the side street and enter the lot. They have a sign placard saying, Sombat parking, to help.

Ordered the Pinapple fried rice and the Pad Thai. Both dishes were amazing! Plenty of food to eat two days in a row! I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Hilo

Ordered mild chicken pad Thai—pleasantly tangy and sweet tamarind flavor with peanut, egg, carrot, green onion, bean sprouts, and a ton of noodles! Nice big portions and good flavor makes it worth the price tag. I think I’ll try medium spicy next time, and perhaps ask for extra sauce!

Save your money and go else where. Im from NYC and thai food there is amazing. I figured the price would reflect the quality of their food, $34 toal for pad thai and cashew nut. 4 pieces of chicken, each the size of my finger nail in my pad thai and the rest was noodles and over seasoned sauce that tasted like cheap bottled sauces. Cashew nut, 2 pieces of chicken, size the same as my pad thai and over sauced with coconut. The dish was drowning in sauce and no meat.Both dishes were large in portion, but filled with nothing but noodles or sauce.Do not order from here, go else where to the kona side for your thai cravings. Not sure why this was rated so high, was deceived by the reviews.

I got me and my girlfriend food here a couple weeks ago for the first time and we havent missed a Saturday lunch date with Sombats since! This is by far the best Thai food in Hilo and that Ive had so far. Its Authentic, flavorful well worth the price and absolutely great when vegan. Massive portion sizes of delicious and filling food. I recommend the Pad Thai and Kang Ped curry for lunch or dinner. Thank you Sombats team members and owners for your above and beyond food. Hilo appreciates you greatly!

Food was tasty and there were enough vegetarian options. Our server was also very helpful. He also customized the dishes. They had very clear photos for differentiation between different spice levels. The only issue was that we found a hair strand in our food and it was not a lemongrass fiber.

Some of the best Thai food I ever had. The dishes are generous in size and are made with extremely fresh ingredients. The Thai hot is true to its word - its extremely hot (and the spice builds with every bite)! Our server was also extremely hospitable and friendly.

Went here on the strong recommendation of a local and our meal was quite good. We ordered shrimp pad thai, chicken green curry, and spring rolls. The pad thai was a bit on the dry side but the flavor was impeccable. Id never had curry quite like this -- not in Thailand or elsewhere in the U.S. -- it was much thicker and creamier than Im used to and I found it to be quite delicious. The place was empty when we arrived but every seat was full by the time we finished our meal. Its oddly located in a strangely configured shopping center but worth the effort it took to find it. Order it spicy -- they do not disappoint!

The food was above average and its neat that its family run and they source locally, but it felt we were being nickel and dimed when the meals are already on the pricey side at $18-$20 a plate. Tried to charge us $2 for extra rice (initial rice portions are very smalland charged us extra for the take out containers. Food was good! Just not if youre on a budget.

Amazing food. Great Customer Service.We were hesitant to try it but the food was amazing. Big quantity of food for a decent price. Its hidden in the corner of a shopping center. Definitely try it if youre in Hilo.

I havent had anything here I didnt love or like. I especially appreciate being able to veganize different things. I was very surprised that upon reopening in July their prices went up $2 at least on every item except desserts and drinks, so I cant exactly make this my every weekend food spot anymore :(

Sombats is one of my favorite Thai restaurants on the island. Everything I have eaten here has been good to excellent in flavor, portions and presentation. Please note, it is small and there are not many seats. I like the green curry, Tom yum soup, sticky rice, and Pad Thai. Hard to go wrong here if you like Thai food.

Beware how you order your food!This is a very good restaurant. Food, service, atmosphere: they got it all. But be careful how you order your dish. Theyre going to want to know how spicy you want it. They offer 4 choices: mild, medium, hot and Thai hot. I normally eat fairly hot, and often have the hottest offer a restaurant will have. But you never know, do you? If there are 4 choices, one of which I was sure I shouldnt touch, surely I could handle the 3rd rung up. So I ordered my dish hot. The waiter (that was very good by the waywarned me that it might be too much, and after a short discussion - and a few laughs, offered me "between medium and hot", which I agreed to. Well, I should have listened to the wise. Never in my life had I ate something that made me cry. Made my nose runny, sure. Made my lips numb, sure. But never made my eyes tear up. Thats how much it was too much. I eventually ate all my curry plate, and lived to tell you about it. But be warned: go in with RESPECT.BTW, the green papayas salad is absolutely DIVINE!

Read a review of this in a super critical and oddly sarcastic guidebook that was a really positive review so we gave it a go. The food was amazing. We had classics (green curry and pad Thaiand they were some of the best weve ever had. Small place, service was fast and friendly but youll have a wait if theyre busy I imagine. Worth it tho. Really fresh and huge flavours. Will return.

After a busy day of hiking the island, we chose take out from Sombats. I am so glad we did! The other reviews were right on! As we didnt dine in we did not interact with the staff very much, but even the little bit we did they were very sweet, friendly, and helpful. The food was absolutely delicious, but be forewarned that it can be pretty spicy. As typical Americans, we actually can handle quite spicy. However we ordered our dish medium and I would say that was closer to an American "hot" level! I am sure the Thai hot would have been unbearable!! We ordered Pad Thai, pineapple fried rice, and the fresh rolls with basil. Loved at all!

Sombats is in my top two best Thai restaurants on the island. Sombat grows many of the herbs herself, and is always in the kitchen personally cooking the food.The curries are very flavorful and thick, and the spice level is amazing. If you are aversive to spicy food do yourself a favor and order mild. I love the yellow curry, the tapioca and fried banana, and the pad thai- Ive literally never ordered something I didnt enjoy.

I was really hungry and we had just landed. This was close to the airport and looked like it had a decent menu. We got here and there was a bit of a wait. There was a table that got free but because there were only TWO people serving it took a really long time to sit!! I mean seriously! There was a poor couple that had been waiting way before us and someone took their order 15 minutes into OUR wait!We finally did get seated after a painful wait. We ordered the pad kee mow with beef. Hubby wanted it hot but Id read reviews and decided on medium. It was perfect. The noodles were really good. We also got the pineapple fried rice which was delicious. It definitely was spiced with curry powder, something Ive never had at a thai restaurant before!After eating there was another wait for the check and a box! I don like that they encourage you to bring your own boxes though.This would have been 4 stars but took one off because of the service!

We did not eat at the place but took takeout food. The portion was very generous. The green curry with beef and egg plant was very good. The chicken with cashew was not what I expected. I thought it would be a stir fry dish but it was in a yellow curry which was very tasty. The green papaya salad was also very good.

I have eaten at Thai places all over the world. This place remains my favorite anywhere. I come back every year. Pineapple fried rice is out of this world. Thai ice tea with coconut as well. The location is not great but it is all about the food at this place. If you go anywhere while you are in Hilo, go here.

Fantastically priced food with large portions that will be blow your taste buds out of the water.Disclaimer: they have 4 options of heat (mild, medium, hot, Thai hot)They are hotter than you think, a “medium” pad Thai left me sweating. Be warned! I’d recommend going for in between mild and medium.

Hands down best Thai place we have ever been. The two young women running the front of house were attentive, so kind, and even set up a table for us in the middle of of a rush. Wonderful dining experience for our honeymoon.

Food is delicious... service is always excellent. The place is small, quaint... so not much seating but they’re very accommodating.

The best Thai food we had on the island (and we had lots). Absolutely loved their Pineapple fried rice and papaya salad. We like spicy food and found that level 4 was the upper limit of what we could eat. Super-friendly service as well.

I want to write a bad review about this place, so less people go there since it is not large, but I can not lie. Best Thai food on big island, no question. Not even close. I have traveled the country trying Thai restaurants and this one ranks up there, #3, if I had to peg it. The green curry passed the rest, and the homemade lemon grass tea is must order!

This was really good food. Huge portions. It was a casual place and the service was good. We had the Kang ped, Panang and yellow curry. We got 2 hots and 1 medium cause we like really spIcy food. We were being careful cause of reviews but we thought it was good level. We could of gone for Thai hot but like I said we like spicy food. All was delicious.

Oh, goodness - heavenly delicious. Dont skip dessert - the tapioca pudding is delightful. We tried the cashew chicken curry, which was outstanding, and the pork panang curry over brown rice. They were amazing. I was not too excited by the basil beef noodles - they were dry. But the other dishes more than made up for this one.Update: visited again one year later. Still as impressive as the first time! Lunch special is red and green chicken curry over rice + pad Thai, super huge portion for $8 (eat in or carry out). Cashew pork curry is my #1. Also tried the lad nar, incredible, and the pineapple curry which was amazing. I love this place. Lunch daily, dinner only on Saturdays.

My boyfriend and I were both very happy with the food that we got here! Medium hot was perfect for both of us, and we love spicy Thai food. All of the curries are delicious and filling, and a great deal for what you get. I would definitely recommend you go here if you are in Hilo!

The food is very fresh and looks and tastes fantastic. Friendly staff and broad menu make it a favorite place. Its a little more expensive than some of the other Thai restaurants in Hilo, but Ive never had a bad meal or experience there, unlike at competitors restaurants.
