Sofia's Old San Juan in San Juan

Food was good, service was great, but we needed to split the bill and the management would do it. When different people are traveling on different expense accounts, thats an issue which means I wont be back.

This menu was out of place for the area in the best way possible. The steaks were outstanding, and the drinks were absolutely amazing. We tried a variety of things from the menu, and enjoyed everything from the fish and chips to the homemade gelato.

Three and a half Stars. Beautiful atmosphere very quaint. Staff was phenomenal. They were very kind and hospitable. We had the 24 oz porterhouse. This day could have used a bit more seasoning and was not very tender in comparison to some of the well-known steakhouses. I had the Regina risotto and again the seafood was a little bland. The ravioli with shrimp and lobster was very flavorful. Calamari was very good also. Presentation was beautiful. Again, I really loved the staff they were very kind people.

The food was good. We chose to eat inside because it was very hot outside, so the AC was nice too. The thing that really turned me off about the whole meal was when we were about to leave, the waitress gave us a prepared card for a review and specifically asked us to review the restaurant. I thought that was presumptuous and a major turn off.

So we landed in San Juan with Norwegian cruise line .This place was one of the few that takes orders after 8 .The host who gave us the table was very friendly and gave us a nice table outsideThe waitress who took the order was very friendly and helped us out with the menuThe food was just excellent.We had appetisers were really good and the portions are bigI had the seafood Paella , it took me back to SpainMy husband had the pizza, he loved itAs the pictures posted we ate half the plate before I could take any pictures 😅Was a great ending for a day at San Juan.Thank you

First, let me say that this review is mainly for the food this particular evening, because the staff get 5 stars! App was good, and we each ordered seafood. My wife got the scallops and I got the Mahi. The meat was so over cooked I had to use a knife on my fish and my wifes scallops were very chewy and unusual tasting. They quickly apologized and our reorder was lasagna bolognese and spaghetti and meatballs. Even though it was much better, my meatballs were hard and dry and my wifes meat sauce had a weird tangy taste. I am a big guy and we eat well and travel quite a bit, however we arent impossible to please. The pasta was cooked well on both, and my marinara was delicious. We just didnt have the heart to complain again, and it was still a better selection than our 1st. They comped us a DELICIOUS creme brulee, and the evening ended on a good note. Folks, PLEASE take this review as constructive feedback on how to correct your mistakes. Meat needs to be cooked, but not OVER cooked. I also dont think the fish was as fresh as it could be. Mahi and scallops cooked correctly should cut like butter and all of these meats should be moist. The atmosphere was nice, and again, from the gentleman outside controlling the reservations and flow to the servers to the manager, you all did a great job as customer service professionals. We would come back again just because of the service and hopefully this was just an off night for the food.

This was the best dinner we had in Puerto Rico. Pastas are delicious and filet mignon was the tastiest one I have tried in years. Higly recommneded.

As a resident, I hate most restaurants in Old San Juan. I dont recommend any restaurant to tourists.However, ever since my first and second visit to Sofias it has nailed every single aspect that speaks to me about what a restaurant should be.If you want the best of the best, look no further.

Visited this excellent restaurant with my family and we loved it! Expectations exceeded. Food was absolutely delicious and portions were on spot! This establishment is a winner and we highly recommend it. Reviews and high ratings on the web are a solid testament its on the top as Old San Juans best Italian restaurants.

Don’t eat here. Racist restaurant. As soon as we walked up the waiter (BLACK/darker Dominicanhe pointed out other restaurants we could eat at. I didn’t catch on at first. So when I asked for a table he hesitated and said uhhhhwell we have a dress code and we strict on exposure mind you I have on long tights and a tank and my sister have on a shirt and shorts. So we said cool and kept it moving on our way back past of course there was a white woman with a shirt skirt on and a halter top breast on up exposed thighs on down exposed sitting outside eating! And as we are looking at her while walking past the waiter that told us we couldn’t eat there looked away he made no eye contact with us. So save being discriminated against and don’t even stop there if you are African American. Let me mention we were trying to eat outside where it’s hot at by the water front so “no exposed skin” is ridiculous to me!

My stomach needed something it was used to after a week of amazing Puerto Rican foods.. Was actually going for Chinese but they were closed so decided to try SOFIAS.My server Pamela was quick, sweet and attentive. Plus her favorite beer is also Michelob UltraI had shrimp champagne which was insanely delicious... Came with jumbo shrimp and also had Tio Pepe mushrooms.. Which were equally as delicious and enough for 2 people.Place had a nice atmosphere.Overall...a must stop when your on Old San Juan.. Go hungry

The food was very good. We had the pasta di trevi and the shrimp champagne. The sauces were a little heavy for what we were wanting to eat, but still very delicious. We ate every bite. The service was great and our meal came out quickly.

This is a tourist trap BUT the steaks are very good for the price. Grab a med rare USDA prime and a bottle of Californian chardonnay and you will not regret it.Avoid their pasta or pizza especially if you have some idea of Italian food. My mussels were chewy and drenched in cream. My shrimp was properly cooked but also drenched in cream. Just grab a steak really.

Ok garlic mussels. They were a bit too big and a little over cooked. Loved my spaghetti bolognese though. The meat sauce was delicious. My bf had a steak. It was cooked perfectly and he enjoyed it quite a bit. We sat outside which was a nice ambience with a breeze.

Came here after to seeing reviews. Was looking for a good steak and man I found one. My wife bday was last month and we went to Ruth Chris in Alexandria VA and this small place had that beat. Try it out and you will be back. Our Waiter April was informative about the menu and had great recommendations. Great outdoor seating and family friendly.

A lil bit pricey for a pasta with only 4 pieces of shrimp. Yet DELICIOUS and a big dish very filling. The opening hours on a Sunday were off and they ended up opening at 2 instead of 11:30 like it says. The staff was nice and welcoming. And dessert are reasonably priced and DELICIOUS. If you’re looking for great meal a lil on the high end type it’s a great place.

It was a cute spot. Outside dinning was available and made it perfect because the weather was amazing. I had the guavanoli, it was good. It was like a pasta burrito with melted cheese and delicious guava sauce. I had a passion fruit cheesecake, it was good but not great, I really could have passed. I had a drink... a mule of sorts it was not great it seemed to be missing the alcohol but overall it was a good place for outside dinning and food was good. I wouldnt necessarily come back but glad I got to experience it.

Popular restaurant with variety of good food choices and excellent service.The bartender mixes great cocktails and is super personable! The gentleman who helped seat us was a gem also! Highly recommended as a San Juan go to!

Went here on a whim to avoid the rain and it was hands down the best place we ate at while in San Juan. Delicious food & incredibly friendly service! They have a wide variety of dishes, including vegetarian options. I would highly recommend!

I have been to Sofia’s twice. The only thing better than the food is the service. The people are incredible. The pizza is great - I’ve tried the one with all the meats & the Stallone’s. We got the mussels - large and meaty - but great. And we have had the seafood risotto - also incredible. Grab a bottle of wine with your meal and you’re all set. Worth while!

Sofias is a nice, Italian restaurant if you want something other than Puerto Rican food. Its kind of expensive for what you get. I ordered scallops with pasta and they were tough. My husband got a pizza, which was tasty.

Good food.The prices match the fact that it is within tourist central, things are a bit pricey.The portions are decent but you will need an appertizer to really feel full.The calamari was the best item we tried. Everything else was okay to good but not great.

Pasta was delicious, mussels and calamari were on point, cocktails well done, and service prompt and attentive. Had the pasta di trevi and the shrimp were perfectly cooked, and the sauce not heavy. They warned about spicy but that couldnt have been further from the truth. The waitress was attentive throughout the meal. Good game out rather quick so definitely good if you want to get back out and do more exploring.

The atmosphere is great the service was very nice and surprisingly quick.We ordered a bunch of stuff but the stars of our order were definitely the Duck Gyoza and the Asian Tuna Tacos.

Food was amazing! I ordered lasagna Bolognese and ate every morsel. The fettuccine Alfredo also very good. Its in a perfect spot in old San juan. The only con was that they refused to swipe 2 cards to split the bill. They could only do one card, which I thought was odd.

Okay so I usually like to end a holiday with a meal not to forget, unfortunately Sofias just didnt hit the spot like I was expecting.Walking up to the venue I got a "hello how are you" which caught me off guard and I had to ask if they worked there, no uniform, nothing clearly showing they worked there and they said "of course I do" in a less than ideal manner.As a solo traveller I tend to go eat when its quieter as I know taking a table on my own isnt the greatest when theyre busy.So it was fairly quiet and lots of empty tables and they put me inside right next to the front door, literally I think I could lock the door handle (I dont recommend with COVID).No CDC card check like mandated by the authorities.So now I had a seat next to the door where every waiter/waitress and visitor walked through every few moments.I then got approached by a waitress to take my order and her politeness was lovely, that really helped rescue the customer service so far.Grabbed a Margherita, the waitress advised they only had top shelf tequila currently so would be a bit more expensive but this is okay.I eventually ordered the meatball starter and porterhouse rare.The meatballs were breaded to have a crisp coating so I thought great, I kid you not they were pretty solid inside, not as I would expect a meatball to be.Needless to say this place prides itself on steaks so Ill await the main course.Before the main course there was an argument brewing between visitors and the staff over an overcharge that had been refunded and the visitors didnt understand as their online banking showed the overcharge. Did I mention I sat right next to the door so has 5-6 people arguing right next to my table?Did the manager think to move them away from other guests? Appears not....I eventually stepped in and explained that previously having things like this happen they should just ring their bank and the bank will clear it up and confirm the situation, this seemed to calm the guests down as it was an external party giving advice rather than guests Vs staff (and k think manager?)So they leave.... Did anyone thank me or even note that I helped? Nope. Well not sure why I bothered but at least I no longer had people arguing within 6 inches of my table .... Covid distancing anyone?So then the steak arrives, vert impressive looking on a still sizzling cast iron pan.Wow was I disappointed, the meat quality seemed overly fatty for a Porterhouse, and it was certainly much closer to medium. I fully get this when its someone ordering medium rare, air on the side of caution but if someone asks for rare they clearly want rare.Wouldnt rate the meat quality that highly, though Im no expert.Unfortunately no staff came near during the main event so I couldnt be bothered to argue about the meat, maybe I should of but seeing how they handled the previous guests Im pretty sure it would be a wasted effort.Can confirm the Margherita was good though!So all in all I really have to rate this 2/5. It could do so much better, it has a great opportunity but alas maybe they arent taking advantage of that, maybe they just see it as single visit tourists so no need to impress for repeat business or perhaps its because I was a solo traveller, bill was still close to $100 (the online menu on Google is woefully out of date on prices).So yeah sorry but I would not recommend this joint

Stopped for appetizers and a cocktail. We felt like we were bothering the staff (we were the only ones there). Snacks were good, good selection of wine. Wont be going back.

Food was delicious our waiter Jorge was amazing so friendly and he gave us excellent service and tips on where to visit. Awesome all around

The service was 10/10. Our server Luigi was the absolute best. He was very attentive, polite, and friendly. He made our experience very fun. Not to mention how delicious all of our food was and the portions were large. I wish I lived in Puerto Rico so I could come back. Highly recommend!

LOUIGI was the best! He gave us the service we didnt know we needed. The food was also great. He knew the menu in and out, and gave us suggestions that blew our minds. The restaurant was clean the vibe was nice. We are from out of town visiting and our waiter made the experience worth it.

I didnt imagine coming to Puerto Rico and having Italian cuisine for my birthday dinner but plans didnt go as I thought but it turned out to be the best dining experience I had on the island.They accommodated our every wish. We were seated without the long wait at most of the other restaurants and the food and the hospitality was unmatched from other restaurants Id experienced on the island.They advertise specializing in steak and pasta, so thats what I ordered. The ribeye was season with just kosher salt a sprig of thyme and a pat of butter. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare as requested and was delicious! Their steak was at least prime marbled with just the right amount of fat to give the steak that "meat butter " appeal. Now surprisingly the pasta and Alfredo sauce was the star of the show, I can only complain that I didnt have enough lol. We also had their steak fries that were excellent also and finished with a piece of decadent chocolate on chocolate cake accompanied with a few dabs of fresh whipped cream... I was done for the evening.I would like to recommend that they get some type of cognac besides that it was a first class dining experience. When I return this will be one my first stops in the future

Amazing food and service. Cocktails are great and the portions are generous. I did not envision myself wanting Italian food while in Puerto Rico but this was a totally different experience. The whole red snapper was super fresh and a great value. This place is definitely worth dropping by if you’re in the area.

Absolutely amazing. Best chicken parm Ive had. The chicken was so tender and the sauce was very authentic. The shrimp pasta dish was to die for . Overall very nice experience.

Everything was excellent. Service was great and server Khali delighted us with 3 of his signature drinks. Highly recommend it.

(Post Covid-19 regulationsGreat atmosphere, great food and great service.Were here on vacation and this place was recommended by our hotel staff. I called and made same day reservations for 4 with no issues. Upon arriving we were pleasantly greated by the host who sat expeditiously sat us. The ambiance was in the dark side with Italian movie posters hung on the wall. The music was soothing, mostly 80s.Our server Rafael was awesome. He is bilingual which really helped when my daughters were ordering. My wife ordered a sangria and I a Pinot Noir (Josh), both were good. Our food came fairly quick and was really good, although on the salty side. My snapper was cooked to perfection. Big portions but a bit pricey. Not unreasonable though, especially with the new COVID-19 guidelines of limiting the amount of patrons.

This has to be one of my favorites in Old San Juan. The food is amazing as are the drinks. The service is top notch and the prices are very reasonable. The restaurant itself is a great addition to the area and really lends itself to the upbeat atmosphere this area has, including live music that stolls through the restaurant on occasion. If exploring Viejo San Juan, stop in and try this place, you wont be sorry.

Absolutely marvelous food. The worlds best risotto without question. Every bite was absolutely heavenly. Huge servings so I couldnt try anything else and I dont think I could. The service? Meh. But honestly the food is reason enough to go back. Right in the heart of Old San Juan, walking distance from the Pier.

Unfortunately a very bad restaurant, me and my wife had a very bad experience here.We were craving a good pasta and some sea food. So we ordered the seafood pasta, it was very expensive, but we thought the taste will justify the price. Unfortunately it didntThough the pasta is 28 USD, we thought its only worth about 14 USD.The mussels were empty, we complained to the waiters that the items are missing, we waited more than 30 minutes and no one attended to us. Then we complained again but no one paid us attention.In the end we asked to see the manager, in the end we were attended by Dort, he was very kind and presentable but he explained to us he cant do much.He tried to get us a discount but the owner didnt accept, and then the owner refused to speak with us and didnt want to deal with us.In the end Dort went out of his way and provided us a discount.In short, the pasta was good, but doesnt justify the very high price, the service is very bad, they even took more than 30 minutes to give us the bill, and about an hour to resolve a simple matter. And the owner couldve done something about a complaint if he cared about his customers.I dont think visiting here would be good to anyones time.
