Best fish and chips in Canberra. Fresh, piping hot with a range of battered, crumbed or plain grilled fish on the menu. I cant wait until their renovations are complete.

On Good Friday I visited the place with several friends.The food was too oily and with a slight rancid taste.None of us finished our meals.That night I suffered from heartburn and couldnt sleep.Next morning I discovered that all my friends had a similar experience, including some needing medical assistance.I dont think we will rush back soon.-------------------Here we are, nearly a month later, and all I got was an elusive response to my earlier post by "the owner" (thats how they identified themselves who, despite my clear complaint, suggested I should write to reception at the Southern Cross Club.Im sure more people got sick that day, but this would open a can of worms.

Great food, good service. Price was okay. We just walked in and lucky to get seats.

Great views, crispy chips and yummy fish burger. Others had fish and chips. We were all really happy with our choices. A place I would go to again.

Worst fish, MasterFood Tartare Sauce & Dressing Sache , instead you expect from a restaurant on such iconic scenic view site to be more in-house made of high quality like any other fish and chips restaurant, Coffee was terrible couldn’t not finish any of the things…… make the experience even worst is the seating area was full of honey bees and kids couldn’t sit there…👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

I went for fish and chips on Good Friday with friends and we all got very sick after eating fish and chips, was more oily than usual, I ended having medical intervention and my friends had agonising Friday night. Avoid.

What a beautiful setting. So nice to see so many families out enjoying the sunshine on an autumn day.We had the share pack for $37 it was so fresh with fish, calamari, prawns and chips, more than enough for two people.

Pretty good fish and chips, and great value with the kids. Check out the little forest section to the left (if youre facing the lake). My kids call it the secret garden, its a magical, beautiful place, where the kids imagination can shine.

The view is great.The food is OK. There was a confuse - menu states Prawns, while they mean Prawns cutlets. Anyway, they replaced with grilled fish to make sure no bread is present. The staff is friendly.

Very disappointing.It used to be the best place to get fish and chips, when they used to cook it as you ordered it. Now they cook it in batches (obviously because its quickerbut now its never hot when you get it, only just warm.This is the second time that this has happened so I wont be going back.

I will bring this back to a 5 star when they promise to never bring back the worst band brother (Hiltonand sister act they have ever brought to the lake. Really destroyed the ambience of a nice summers day by the lake! Someone must have been high or drunk when they thought it was a good idea to bring this awef performance to Canberra!

This is a great set up for gatherings of all sizes. We had a small family gathering with 4 adults and 3 kids and there was plenty of well spaced seating available. It is on the lakeside and you can bring a picnic blanket and sit on the grass. The menu is not confined to seafood and there is a separate licensed section for drinks and coffees and ice cream to round off the occasion.

Amazingly quick service. Fish is delicious. Great spot on a warm day.

Great outdoor space for families and those who enjoy a picnic as there are plenty of grass area to lay your blankets or rugs on without crowding others!Though the chips were good the fish, panko crumb prawns, calamari did not reflect the price. In my opinion overpriced for the quality and quantity.Mostly come for the environment rather than the food!

This is a fast food place with excellent chips and location by the yacht club. The fish part is average - I always just got whatever grilled option on offer and these were fresh if lacking in flavour somewhat. I always come back for the relaxing vibe, spend an afternoon watching kids and families in laughter, and enjoy the breeze from the lake with chips to munch on.

Probably the 2nd worst fish that I’ve experienced in my many years of fish n chips across the globe (first place goes to Assembly in Braddon).Grilled barramundi is a mushy mess. Calamari and fish often tastes like it has just been defrosted in the microwave.Wish they would try a little harder as the venue is great.

Fresh crumbed fish by the lake!? So good. Highly recommend this place. Called the snapper shack and they do not disappoint. $50 for 2 x snapper and chips plus calamari and cutlets. They also have the support of the yacht club and grateful selection of drinks.Go try if you, food plus lake side seating make for a great visit guaranteed

Good and fresh fish and chips. We chose the family pack - grilled salmon, battered barramundi, crumbed prawns and calamari, and chips. All devoured by the family! Has outside seating area (some overhead coveroverlooking the lake.

Great location, with unparalleled views across the lake.The new Snapper is a marginal improvement on the previous iteration, however notable failings still exist. The main issue was the lack of Salt, Pepper, or Tartare sauce. These omissions are unforgivable for an establishment whose primary reason for existence is to supply fish and chips.Also worthy of mention was the fact that all of the flavoured milks in their fridge were past their shown use-by-dates.Having said all of that, the cooked food was of good quality and quantity. Service was friendly and prompt.

Been there many times. This time went there with interstate guests, I was disappointed with their fish. Order was incorrectly delivered, ordered grilled got battered. There was a young boy taking the order, I guess untrained. The fish tasted below average, although chips were great. Given the price you pay for the food, I won’t risk going again.Great location btw.

Even though the establishment was very busy, the handling of the customers was ordinary at best. It is nothing more than a take away fish and chip shop, but charges a la carte prices for food mass cooked, placed in a bainmarie, and then packaged and served. They had run out of some menu options, but unless one ordered online, this was not made apparent ( drawing a line, or putting " sold out" on the displayed menu in the shop. Received grilled salmon which was over cooked and so oily that the cardboard container was soaked through. Chips werent too bad. Overall, a fair "greasy spoon".

Id love to say hidden gem but it seems pretty much hair of Canberra know about this. Doesnt matter though. It was great. The picnic style setting by the lake with lushous lawns and trees for shade make it ideal for families and those wanting to hang around a while.And the fish...So fresh and lovely, and pretty quick too boot. Considering how busy they were. Its one of those order and they give you a pager to collect deals.Also, theres a bar nearby as well, in case youve run out of cans in the Esky..Definitely coming back next time in Canberra.

Good fish and chips. Aint cheap, but nothing is anymore. Yeah, Im old.Atmosphere was pretty good on a Sunday afternoon, of you like people and live "music".Personally its all a bit too fun for me. I miss sitting alone in a dark room and getting drunk in silence. Those were the days.

The best Fish and Chips in Canberra, and with the best view. Service took ages today, but with the Territory in lockdown and this being one of the most popular places to picnic, that was to be expected. They were very apologetic.

Great food. Standard fish and chip shop menu. Chips are the best. All the other menu items are excellent. Sadly, Snapper seems unable to analyse its output and have product ready to go at peak periods. Consequently, the wait for food made to order is just over the top. So much potential for an improved production model. When that gets fixed it will be 5 stars.

A lovely setting by the lake for fish and chips. Unfortunately the crumbed fish we had was not up to the previous standard and was a little more expensive. I hope crumbed snapper comes back on the menu.

My take away fish and chips was a great disappointment this evening because of the following:* Our large garden salad was missing but was charged for;* kids meal fish had quite a lot of bones and tough;* grilled fish was tough;* battered fish was not quite cooked.Still feeling upset with Snapper and most likely will not order from them in the near future.

First experience we loved it. The chips were crispy crunchy and the fish batter was nice and light.2nd experience went back again after such a positive experience and it was a disappointment. Food was luke warm and soggy! The grilled fish was not edible! We had to put our food in the oven to warm it up when we got home.

Very good service. Great steak. Pork belly entree needed more of that yummy plum sauce

Used to be absolutely smashing, sadly now all the seafood is frozen before being cooked, not much selection, oily and well not worth the amount charged.Great location. Great for a one off visit. But there are better, much better fish and chips in Canberra.

A decent single-serve of fish & chips with a view of the lake. It would be nice to have a picnic here to take in the view on a nice day, but you can get cheaper fish & chips from a take out shop - which is just as good, if not better.

Beautiful spot by the lake to sit back and watch the sailing with some fish and chips. Quick service, dog friendly and big serving sizes. The seafood tasted fresh however the crumbs were quite thick more like a light batter which I didnt enjoy as much.We will definitely be back though! Looking forward to trying the grilled option next time around.

Great position with fantastic views but now overwhelmed by weekend popularity...especially on special days like Fathers Day(this year the queue for food extended to the shoreline).

The food isnt anything to write home about, but that view, and the large open area next to the water for kids to run around, or just sit and watch the water... Amazing.

We decided to have our Christmas party by the lake. Lucky to have glorious weather and fish, chips and great local wines from Snapper. Such an chilled way to finish the year with a delicious picnic in the sun.

We went there on a fairly miserable day but we were out of the wind so it was fine. We had fish and chips and they were excellent, just wish they would not use plastic forks and glasses. Lots of parking around and if you want to go to a restaurant there is one at the same venue.

Reliably good fish and chips produced quickly at a popular scenic spot. I tried the famous Doyles fish and chips of Watson Bay last week and neither their fish nor chips were up to Snapper On The Lake (and the price was the same). Ive previously enjoyed both snapper and barramundi here. The view by Lake BG is paradise and there is occasionally lovely live music or some other festivity going on. The coffee (LSR beansis also good.

If youre looking for a fish and chips in Canberra, this is definitely the place to go. The battered fish was delicious. On a sunny day its great place to go to catch up with friends.
