Abbey St, Abbeyquarter North, Sligo, Ireland, Ros Comain
Renaissance carvings, a well-preserved cloister and sculptured 1400s altar in a 13th-century friary.
Ver very interesting
I have a fond preference for ruins, leaving the rest to the imagination. I liked this place.
The history is so interesting
Hidden gem. Didnt hurt that it was free to enter due to current refurbishment.
The Abbey was very interesting and there is a self guided map of the historical highlights. The staff was friendly and very helpful. They helped me find one of my relatives gravestone from nearly 300 years ago!
We visited here during our Ireland road trip. We passed through Sligo, Ireland, and googled things to see. The Sligo Abbey came up. It was free at the time due to renovations. Very cool to check out. As noted, its a small area, but quite old and it was super interesting to check out all the stone memorials with hundreds-year-old engravings.
This abbey dates back to the 1500s. Impressive and not a lot of time needed to view the ruins. Dont drive by.
Amazing historical place. They give you detailed guide, with explanations. It is free of charge. Nice clean facility, with toilets.
The visits are free. At the entrance you get an explanation with the main information about the place and also a guide with details.
Lovely food reasonably priced and friendly Staff and Very busy.
Beautiful and almost 800 years old.The day we went it was free because its getting construction work done.Worth a visit but unsure of the price
Actually a very small area, nothing much to see except old ruins. We were lucky to visit on the day with free entry. Nothing much to add more, if you are in Sligo you can visit, but be aware parking around the area gets busy and is paid parking only.
Loved it. Man on desk was so lovely and knowledgeable. Thank you from the Derry girls??
Lovely local historical site.
Very informative staff and fascinating information. Loved the ruins and helped by fantastic blue skies and it was free that weekend which was an extra special bonus.
Sligo Abbey is almost in the center of the city, although there is a small entrance fee, but on the day we visited it was free. An interesting place for those interested in historical buildings, the Wish Stone here is of general interest.
Lovely place....they are updating some parts at the moment so entrance was free. They have brochures in different languages with a self-guided tour. Really nice and helpful staff
Free in at present (Aug 2022due to renovations taking place. Intetesting spot..worth a visit.
Fascinating, we appreciated the pamphlet in our language and a guide for kids with pictures to spot the hidden treasures
Im living in Sligo for several years now, and decided to take a ramble in. It was free admission on the day, which was a nice surprise.Really interesting historical site right in the town. Staff were brilliant and very friendly. Especially Andrew on the front desk, who answered some questions we had about Bram Stoker after our walk around.
Very nice well look after.
Great stop in Sliggo, parking is easy on one of the many public parking nearby, there is a sign about opening and price, but on the day we were there it was free. Friendly people on the reception welcoming and handing out info sheet. Take it, its worth to get the background info on the Abbey and its history. The tour is easy and well prepared, we had the baby with us and it was no problem to access all points. There is a wish stone as well and some spooky storys so surely also fun fir kids.
Nice place to visit and free at the moment due to work been done.
A very well preserved peace of history. You can see architectural Marvels dating back to 15th century. On my date of visit 13th July 2022, there was no fee, might be free for few more weeks.
Very interesting to know the story of this Abbey, its free and you can have a leaflet that tells the story. The staff is very nice and friendly. Worth visiting.
Interesting place will self-guided tour. Friendly service.
The History of sligo well its steeped in history with Megalithic tombs older that the pyramids of Egypt, the Sligo Abbey is another fantastic MUST SEE in Sligo . I could go into detail but you are better to enjoy discovering for yourself .
Staff most helpful. Explanation in alle languages. Fascinating selfguided tour
The guided tour with Harry was really interesting and informative. I highly recommend taking the tour if you have the time!
More intact than any other monastery ruin weve seen. Really cool to walk around under an actual roof. Worth a stop if youre near Sligo.
Investing Abbey. Currently free entry as you cannot visit all of the grounds. Helpful staff.
Abbey was amazing...most of the lower floor structure was still in tact. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Enjoyed looking around the ruins.
Very nice place!
Nice ruins in the heart of the city.
It is not normally free, but today we entered without paying.
Great place to walk around and think about the past!
Interesting self guided tour taking you through hundreds of years old ruins.
Love the green lights for St Patrick’s Day.
Unbelievable how old this place is ,I just try to place myself back in that time and imagine how life was then.
A visit to Sligo should include the 13th century Abbey. Still has many carvings with interesting stories behind them. On entry you are issued with a guide informing you of the details. Cost is Euro 5, or Euro 4 for concession.
Nice to visit plenty of history here in the heart of Sligo Town center.Dont shore if you need to pay entry because in that time they was doing works.Easy to park the car and after you visit Sligo Abbey you can take a tour in the town center its beautiful worth a stop here definitely
Visited 28/05/2019. A fantastic monument. We had a great visit, especially due to our guide Robert who was extremely knowledgeable and patient. We learnt so much. Thank you! I highly reccomend taking the guided tour, you will get so much more out of your visit. Tony, Amber, Barry & Fiona.
Slightly underwhelming for the price you pay. Poor upkeep of the area and difficult to navigate despite the guidance collateral given upon entry.
Incredible amount of history through out Sligo, and the Abbey made for a pleasant self guided tour of Sligos impressive history
Some cool history to read about, just not a lot to see. Went on a Sunday and entry was free at the time
A large Abbey ruin with many sights to be seen. Enjoyed walking around the site without fellow tourists around. A calm place in the center of Sligo and an enjoyable glimpse at the history of the friary and graveyard.
If you have seen other ruins in Ireland already, this one could probably be left out. It is fairly well maintained, but nothing special. Still, it is one of the few tourist destinations in the city of Sligo, and thus probably a "must see" place there. They charge 5 € for adults and 4 € for kids, or 13 € for a family.
I pass by this all the time. Its a lovely place to see, and very interesting too.
lovely place to go to pass an hour. very peaceful. €4 adult €10 family.dont bring the buggy though. if you have a baby sling this is the spot for it.
