Samoilova, Skopje 1000, North Macedonia, Skopje
Remains of a 6th-century hilltop stone fortress, offering panoramic views of the city & river.
Great place to see the city!
This fortress offers great views over Skopje and the surrounding hills, and is free to enter and wander around. It’s also unfortunately a little run-down and some parts are off limits, which is a shame as it has huge tourist potential.
No historic information displayed whatsoever. But instead a dodgy gatekeeper who wants to blackmail tourists into payinh him an unofficial entry fee.Apart from the view I wouldnt recommend the hike up the hill.
A fortress dating back to the Justinian era with stunning views of the city. It is free entry and definitely worth visiting, however the site has been poorly maintained with no signs etc about its history available.
Entry gate was closed ,so it was worthless to go all the way up
A place to see 360 views of the capital. A super hot summers day in July, wasn’t surprisingly busy. Free to visit which was a bonus.
Old fortress that’s basically a park! Not much information and it’s kinda run down but the views of the city are nice and entry is free. Visit the contemporary art museum next door while you’re here to make the trek up worth it. Be sure to bring water!
Hello. Dear all who live in this small country. I am from Ukraine. Thanks you too much. You give my country few tanks and few airplanes ( su 25). Its soo cute. Thanks from all country. With love family from Kyiv❤️❤️❤️
The Skopje fortress is really mighty and beautiful to behold. Its actually really nicely preserved. And the view from the fortress wall is incredible. The only negative thing is that Skopje is not taking much action into taking care of it.
Price is nice (freebut really needs maintenance!!
Nice place for a quick walk and view of the town. Free entry. But, it is not maintained. It has so much potential and this review can be a 5 stars one if only they cared a little bit about maintaining the grass at least.
The remains of the Skopje fortress. Its free to enter and gives a nice panorama over the city.
Nice view but very dirty and abandoned. No signs. You will need to work on it a lot.
It is well preserved and it has a big potencial, BUT, other commercial buildings inside the castle are are not finished, also there are a lot of wild plants, garbage and some parts of the castle are baned for visitors. I hope that people of Skopje will fix this issues in the near future.
Must visit. Lots of history. And free! (For now at least). It’s a shame that politics are keeping this place from reaching its full potential and attracting even more people. There was some effort 6 years ago and they made great progress and then just stopped. Regardless, get a tour guide and hear about all the history. It’s inexpensive and worth it.There’s parking available, but it’s close to the Old Bazaar and can easily walk to it. Great open space for kids to run around too. Wish everyone would be respectful and take their trash out with them.Attached picture of the view from one side.
The ammount of potential this place has is just insane. Such an intact fortress of great age, but not enough care nor attention from the local or state authorities. There is trash all over it, some objects are closed off, some arent even accessible, and whats worst, there isnt a single info tab / sign about the fortress. The view is also amazing.
Free entrance, nice view to the city but excpeted something more to see inside fortress ..
Nice Views, free of charge, must see
Its free of charge and you can wander round the complex at your leisure. The views are lovely and its close to central Skopje so just go and have a walk round when youre pottering around. On a nice day take a picnic. You can walk along the walls too.
The view up there is magnificent! If youre staying even a few hours in Skopje you should visit here! Watch the sunset here and be amazed! Look at the photos i added if still not sure! But of course dont expect a clean and well designed pedestrian.
You need to go castle for fun and enjoy. Bars, Restaurants, Shisha... Everything around the castle.. If you drive with your car here, be careful for park place.
Skopje Fortress is a part of my (@lexmelonymust-see places in North Macedonia during my escaping travelling.I always rely on my phone, canon 1DX Mark 2 and drone for some aerials.
Really like it, but not much to see, is mostly for the view and sunset that is quite good.
Standing high on top of a creek above the old albanian quarter of the city, overseeing meanders of the Vardar river, the Kale fortress is one of the most prominent landmarks of the city. The original structure was built by the Emperor Justinian, however the walls and tower you can see today, date back only to the 10th century. And even so, there is not much left from the fortress anyway. The surrounding walls provide however probably the best view of the historic center. Just dont expect any fancy western-style castle. The area in between the walls is not well preserved and sometimes looks like a bit of a jungle. It has its own character though.
Really nice view, can just walk from square instead of taking transportation
It is a nice old fortress located in an strategic place in the city. It is well conserved and it worths visiting it, however there’s not much to do. You can see the views of the other side of the city and the views of the bazar.
Great views from fortress, free entry. walkable from city centre.Careful on a rainy day
Worth visiting, especially if you have time for a walk.Very close to old town of the city.Nice view to Skopje.Free entrance.if you would like to understand more about the history you have to pay for a local guide. As far as I understood its about 5 euro.Enjoy!
It’s a free entry visit to something that has a lot of potential should the money be spent on it.Families beware that there are gaps in the wall and rooms that have no barriers which means a 20m plus fall. The views from the walls are spectacular. It must have been some place in its time. It is overgrown with weeds and litter everywhere.Still worth a visit just for the views. Oh, the viewing platforms have no means of access to look through the telescopes mounted there. Genius.
The fortress is very nice, from the top one can see the city from above. I think that the fortress could be kept in a better estate. For example, the stairs to get to the telescope are broken.
The walls are restored in some parts, but for the most part there’s not much to see. The walls are too close to the current city so the view is not amazing. The outside walls are impressive. The city itself is fantastic.
Pleasant for a quiet stroll with a great panorama. Pity that this historic site is not highlighted.
Between the 14th and 20th centuries, we will try to intensely trace the Turkish Ottoman traces in the Balkan Geography, which remained under Turkish rule. The first share will be from the Ottoman Fortress, which overlooks Skopje.
Great well pereserved fortress in the middle of the city with extraordinary view on the city connected to the old part of the city - Carsija.
This is definitely worth a visitGreat views of the cityIf you stay at bushi it’s just across the road
Dont come here for the fortress itself, come here for the great views.
This fortress overlooks all off Skopje. Its a 15 minute walk from the old bazaar. The views are nice but it is a bit dilapidated in the inside and they could do with cleaning it up; it could be a lot better.
Amazing views over Skopje. However, it should be completed its renovation.
To imagine this castle/fortress in ancient times is truly remarkable. The fortress is huge, provides spectacular views of Skopje, and entertains for 60 - 90 mins. There is no fee unless you want a guide for $5 - $6 US. There’s lots of interesting places to explore, wonderful views, and great history here. After exploring the fortress/castle, there’s the bazaar 3 minutes away, which has shops, cafes, souvenir stands, and restaurants.Definitely check out the Kale Fortress.
No one to ask something. Only a professional tourist guide to help you inside. Lots of snow and ice to stumble. There were families outside enjoying skating on snow and ice. Good for snowy weekends. There are rounded rocks with variety of rocks used in fortress walls. He told me that there are evidences Skopje area was a lake million years ago. Its geological formation could be interesting. I assume visiting in spring and summer could be better. I will try again in June 2019. We will see.
Not so ineresting but if you are in Skopje you should visit the fortress. It looks it is under construction. But you can take a half circle on the wall with view to the town. There is no entrance fee.
Honestly its disappointing. The view on the city is nice but not much else to enjoy. The place has plenty of potential but would really need to be developed better. The site is overgrown with grass, restoration is incomplete, not well maintained with some trash around. Ive been to cities with forts, its the least enjoyable I have seen so far.
Beautiful view from the fortress to the town. The surrouning is very uncared.
The Kale Fortress. SImply beautiful with a lot of history attached to it, pertaining to the ottoman empire for so many years and also other conquerers. There was a tour guide (which I cant remember the namethat was really helpful and so friendly! We took almost 2 hours going around the fortress and him explaining to us its history which was very interesting.Definetly worth a visit and if you see a tour guide at the door, let him take you, you wont be dissappointed.
It has the potential to be a 5* location, however unless you find a guide to explain not much can be understood. Entrance is free. We found a really knowledgeable archaeologist and guide near the entrance and bought his service for a good price. The explanation was suppose to take 1hr, but we got into all he was saying and stayed there much longer asking questions. Worth visiting to understand the history of the city.
A must visit place for the views of the city. Its just sad to see that the reconstruction and excavations has been halted. This could be one of the greatest place to spend time when visiting Skopje.
Its a castle. Free entrance. It lacks touristic information inside, like a tourist point with panflets, souvenirs, etc. It should be better preserved.
Nice view on the city. But its really shame its so devastated. Its nice for a walk tho
This is the largest and oldest fortress in Skopje. If youre a tourist you must visit this place
Very nice fortress. Good part of it is still being restored after the famous earthquake in Skopje.
