Our tour guide (long haired young manwas fab. He really made the tour interesting and engaginv. Well worth the visit.
Of all the places we visited in Scotland for our wedding anniversary, this is our #1 favourite! The tour guide (named Ellie if we remember correctlywas very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Once inside this 5,000-year-old burial chamber, it was truly magical for us. Having a tour guide like Ellie definitely helped a lot as we had such a meaningful and memorable experience.
Not FREE and you need to pre book it via Visitor centre. Theres similar places for free if you wanna go cheap
Spennende og interessant plass.
Really enjoyed the site and the talk from the guide. Ive reluctantly been to more ancient sites than I can count and was expecting to be bored, but the guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I was also pleasantly surprised by the rich history of the site, more amusing and interesting than most. Cheers.
Incredible structure of Neolithic times.
Leider kommt man da nur mit Führung hin. Schade.
Rare site well explained by Sarah.
Historical place related ancient rituals and tradition which no one has discovered why and what it is exactly. The guide explanation and presentation is good.
Great guided tour and a fantastic place to visit now its back open! Good book selection too at the gift shop
This is an excellent site - if possible don’t miss it. Book tickets in advance on their website, we saw people being turned away because there was no more room on the tour. Fascinating information on the builders, Vikings and conservation.
Fascinating! Helpful, knowledgeable staff, slick operation.
Ellie the tour guide was very enthusiastic which rubs off on the tourists. The weather sucked a bit but once inside the 5,000 year old burial chamber it was very atmospheric. No photography allowed inside to preserve the 1,000 year old Viking graffiti of runic writing and the Maeshowe Dragon/Wolf scribed onto the stone. This has been a tourist site since 1862, which has prevented more recent graffiti and therefore protected this collection of Viking writing, the greatest collection in the world.
Inaccessible and blocked by fences. Requires guided tour from Stenness visitor center. Other reviews state you cant go in.
We were so disappointed when we visited the Cairn a couple of years before the pandemic. Entry was by guided tour only, from the office and shop which meant being taken by minibus. My wife is disabled and so is unable to access any steps. We were unable to access the Cairn directly across the field by wheelchair. The setting is atmospheric though and we would have loved to see the large collection of runes inside about which we have read.I am sure it would be worth a visit if you are able bodied.
Still closed due to COVID, but visitor centre in Stenness is informative.
Incredible piece of Orcadian and viking history
Need to book in advance. Great to have a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide
One of the most important historical sites in the world.Utterly utterly closed.
Cant wait for it to reopen fully.
Passing by.
Walked all the way to see it, but it has been completely surrounded by fences and you cant go near it. Dont believe the Google maps or Street view photos. Was a nice big mound of grass, though.
Underwhelming, completely. You cant go inside anymore because 16 months into Covid, they havent figured out how to "safely" get 6 people from the visitors center down the road over to the site at a time. And they havent figured out parking near it either. One of the most treasured sites on the island and no one figured that the people willing to put in all the effort to get up the island, maybe for the one time in their life shouldnt experience a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So Im leaving here remembering nothing but a useless mound of grass.
Very Interesting Chambered TombTour guide was very informative & friendly
