Site of Original Dias Cross - Tourist attraction in Mariental, Namibia
It was a memorable experience, with the wind cooling you done by the unforgettable site . Only complaint is the the safety railing should be repaired , and if possible the walk way to Diaz Cross/Point . But it was still early accessible.
Its worth a visit and I loved the scenery on the way to the point. There are beautiful shells around the area and a lovely coffee shop!
The monument is freely accessible, but the walkway getting there is destroyed so a bit of careful treading over rocks is required.Sights are still amazing and worth the effort.
Needs better maintenance.
Nice walk and view with coffee shop and campground nearby. Also, interesting to read about the history of the cross. We saw a whale or two near the island with the seals.
declared a national monument of 12 January 1973.
Great views. Did not stay there
A must see but sadly the walkway fell into disrepair.
This place is breath taking. Im amazed at the beauty of nature.
Interesting place to visit which holds so many memories from the first navigators and adventurers...Please note the cross is not the original one.
Please rebuild the stepway to the cross. It is such a important part of our history.
The bridge washed away about 7 YEARS ago and NOBODY tried to do ANYTHING about rebuilding. This is a main attraction in Lüderitz do something about it. Elderly people and children also visit!!!!!!!
Traveling to this site reminds us of pioneering adventures taken by brave travelers from across the oceans into Worlds unknown. bartolomeu dias and the crew aboard along with a 4 ship Caravel erected the original rock monument carved out by bartolomeu dias on the cliffside which still exists to this day. This is a short drive from Luderitz center and is a must see. There are also options to tent, camp or park camper vans or camper vehicles on site.Other features are ghost buildings off to the west of the cross also just a short drive from the Diaz point. Also a coffee shop with alcohol sales which appreciates the business by passing travellers. And a few other weather beaten monuments including a bridge built to access the cross and old lighthouse buildings. The replica bartolomeu dias caravel ship can be found in Mossel Bay in the Western Cape built in 1988 in Portugal.
A place full of wonder. Loved my visit
Deserted area with historical impact. Very weathered by the elements. Starck reminder of the hardships endured by these pioneers. Some remnants of walkways and buildings, blasted by the sand and sea. Good seabird area for from Caspian to Damara Tern. The lagoon on the right, just before the lighthouse. Coffee shop currently closed, camp site opposite .very rugged.
Wonderful to go back in time.Rocy, dangerous and windy. Definitely a place to visit.
A must-see in Luderitz. Come prepared for cold, windy weather and dont come at high tide or you will have a difficult time getting to the cross. The bridge is long-gone and you have to jump across the rocks and water to get to the area with the cross. Id be wary of the "sheltered" camping sites here-- its so darn windy I dont think its possible to actually be sheltered from the wind anywhere other than your vehicle. Accessible with 2WD.
historical place will enjoy the site. some times it is very windy and the view may be interrupted. If the sea is clear you will have view of dolphins and the seals.
Very remote, but great history. New coffee shop very reasonably priced with friendly staff
Visited the site, the railing along the stairs/steps was repaired and provides a sense of security when climbing to the top. I hope and pray that we can collect enough funds/donations to reconstruct the bridge to access the stair/steps to climb to the top whenever the tide comes in
It would be nice if the bridge is renovated. Nice walk up the hill skipping some rocks if you fit. Senior citizens should take extra precautions.
Worth a visit and drive around the peninsula. Even though the bridge to walk to the cross is being renovated, it was actually more fun to hike across the rocks. My kids loved it. The views from atop the stairs are fantastic.
Very special to visit. A national heritage site of namibia. Over 500 yrs old. Busy renovating this important site. Beautiful view from top at cross.
Viewpoint on a cape. Nice, but not much to see except seawaves. Very windy!
Difficult excess as bridge was destroyed by storm. Beautiful beach with flamingos in the rock pools.
History of the place is fascinating. Camp site is a bit rundown, but still charming.
The site has degraded significantly since our previous visit. The nice little coffee shop is not there anymore. The Diaz Point monument was not accessible.
Its a great historical sight. You can climb up to the top of the monument. There is also a place where you can sit down and enjoy your food. The infrastructures are dilapidated and the steps were falling apart. But its a must see when in Luderitz.
If you stick to the main dirt roads, you will be OK. Desolate area, that has a historical interest, being where Batholomew Dias landed and planted a stone cross. There are plans to build a new bridge to replace the missing wooden one, and people had wanted to start vacation homes and a caravan and camping site there.
Beautiful views and the sunset is great! It’s really windy and cold, so carry a jacket or something. There is a nice light house from across.
Beautiful, nothing but tranquility and peace. Take a jumper, weather change quickly and can get cold
Awesome view from cross to Island with seals.Pity the bridge was not functional
Diaz Cross/Point/Lighthouse National Monument was on my bucket list! However, you enter at your own risk! The historic 1911 wooden bridge to DIAS CROSS was destroyed by storms in 2014. A rock-mortar bridge has been designed. The steps and guard rails must also be renovated. Total cost is NS 4,5 million and the project is reliant on PUBLIC DONATIONS. The pedestrian bridge/crossing was completely destroyed! We did the climb over slippery wet rocks and the high steps on a VERY WINDY morning with success and was blessed with a beautiful view! Seals on our right/crashing waves/howling wind and the cross still bears his name. BARTOLOMEU DIAS 25/7/1466
Highly recommend this some what remote location. Fantastic few hours spent here watching the waves and playing in the water. Wet and wild entrance only added to the experience. Nice little coffee and lunch spot near the weather rock!
A great place to visit for a picnic at the sea. Dont expect to be able to stay or but a drink
Beautiful scenery; seals, sometimes penguins and dolphins about; a really old monument cross put up by Diaz in 1400s
An amazing, beautiful place. Untouched in so many ways. Seriously Westcoast, rustic, sand- & sea-beaten. With lots of evidence of the Brown Hyenas. An absolute must visit to be quiet & take in nature!
It is such an important site, but unfortunately very run down and not maintained at all. Worth a visit but be aware that no maintenance is done here anymore.
The road to Dias Point is really nice, the whole Lüderitz peninsula is a must go. Dias Point un particular is nice but not great. Stop there only if you have time. Strong winds and nice waves breaking on the rocks make beautiful photos.
Is a good place just to see the see from the above. And because of its historical side. The wind are very strong.
We enjoyed the drive there, and all the views along the way. It is a interesting and important part of history, and it was nice to be able to see this with my family
The Dias Cross was erected here by Bartholomew Dias at the point. Great views but was chilly and very windy.
Supposed to be a national heritage site. What a shame! The walking bridge to the point has collapsed and the protective railing at the veiwpoint is all but gone. View is still astonishing but the viewpoint is very unsave.
spectacular place. has an amazing view of ocean waves beating the rocks forms massive spray of water
DO bring a coat, youll thank me for that if you go.Very windy and chilly.Probably not worth your time and fuel.
A desolate place with so much potential. To see something that was erected in 1488 is remarkable. A lovely little coffee shop worth stopping at.
Have to visit this historic spot! So interesting to see. Remember to take something warm since the wind does not stop blowing there.
Very nice historical place. Lots of wild animals to see. Worth visiting the area.
Nice wildlife, Dias Point itself is not very interresting... visit the Coffeeshop, because the owner is an crazy old man with a lot of wired stories... Told us, he will build a holiday Ressort, with a fancy bar on top of a lighthouse and a seaview toilet.
When you are in Lüderitz you have to visit Diaz Point. Nice views and lots of wildlife. Among other things we saw some dolpins. Dont miss it.
