Sintra National Palace in Coimbra

Absolutely breathtaking palace. The architecture is mind blowing. Each room has ceilings craftily architected. Kings and queens rooms and well decorated halls. A lot of history in the palace.

The oldest Royal Palace of Portugal, this Palace was a summer residence for the Royal family for centuries after 1147. The interiors are magnificent and very well preserved. The Palace is the center of the Old Town and a very popular attraction in Sintra. There is a garden and Cafe, with free access, if you dont want to visit the interior

Fantastic little palace with well-preserved tiles. Best to go very early or late in the afternoon when there are not many groups otherwise it’s hard to squeeze into the next room.

Amazing palace! Highly recommend visiting and getting a guide to talk about the history and design. So many interesting things about it that you wouldnt know without a guide. But Even without the tour its an amazing building to experience. Something out of a fairytale. There is a good walk up the hill from the entrance to the palace through the huge gardens but if thats too hard there is a bus. I recommend getting tickets early as there can be huge linesThere is a cafe there but taking to someone else they waited 50 min to get a drink.With walking through the garden could spend a whole day or just the palace allow a few hours-half day

If you like unique palace atmosphere, a bite of history shown - you will love this place. Note that tickets are sold by machines, to which there is a long queue ( waited 30minsand there is only 300 tickets per time slot, every 30mins. After getting the ticket you scan it at the gate, walk up the road in between park, and then stand in a long queue to enter the palace with right time slot.Walking thru palace i found way too slow and very boring, since you walk like a turtle with so many people around. However views from balcony are worth the wait. Next to balcony and exit sigh there is a small kaffeteria, where there is a huge queue. I recommend to go to other place, down the stairs, where you can grab something small to eat - only cash, without long wait.

Magical place to visit, a must when you travel to Portugal! We took an Uber from Lisbon around 8:30am and it was a 45-50 min drive just to arrive to the palace. We made it in time for the 9:30am reservation, and it was worth getting there early to skip long crowds. Make sure to take a windbreaker or comfy sweater because it was quite chilly and light rain out of no where. The views were stunning and well worth visiting.

The castle itself is a nice sight, but plan your visit and manage your expectations in term of queues and wait time. If you are traveling from Lisbon, you will need take the the train from Lisbon to the Sintra station, a bus or tuk tuk from the Sintra train station to the base of the palace, and finally a bus up to the entrance of the palace or a 30 min walk uphill. Even at the entrance, expect to wait another 20 to 40 min to get into the palace. There are multiple queues depending on your timed entry and the organisation of the queues was messy. Is it worth it? for us, no, for you, you can decide based on the pictures. We enjoyed the park surrounding the palace a lot more, especially the hike to the high cross.

Well worth seeing. Get timed tickets early. Expect large crowds and a slow walk through the Palace. Bring headphones for your smartphone - you can download an audio tour.

Very cute Palace. We had nearly no waiting time when we went there on a Sunday afternoon. It was also not too full inside so we had all time in the world to visit every room. For children they provide a QR Code for a mobile game where they have to find certain symbols in the rooms. The place also provides lots of historical information in Portuguese and English to read while walking through the rooms. From the gardens you have a very nice view on Sintra and the coast far away.

Beautiful place, lots to do. Can plan a full day here.However, the queues are very long and its quite busy.

A must if you come to Sintra, the National Palace is a great museum that fully preserves and presents the way things used to be back in the 17th century and how kings and the royal court used to live back in the day and also reflect the politics of the time. The reception and staff is well organized thus making your visit, ticket booking and duration of your stay in the premises a very comfortable and rewarding experience.

The most eye catching sight in Sintra downtown are two unusual huge conical chimneys rising over the kitchen belonging to the Sintra National palace.The original palace here looked much different built in the 9c by the Moorish rulers, while their stronghold was up the steep hill next door - the Moorish castle.After expelling the Moors, Portugal kings built this palace we see today for themselves, extending it from 12c onwards. Therefore, one can easily recognize architecture mixture of styles.You can circle around for free to see the exteriors which are beautiful. However, likewise the Pena Palace, there was a big line for entering it, so we skipped.

It is worth the visit for sure if you are planning to see the bigger castle after.The family room was amazing and it was my favourite room. And I also loved the kitchen ventilation 😳 the did an amazing job back in days.

We took a train to see this magical place. The train from lisbon was about an hour and do not come late they leave on the dot. Once we arrived we did opt for the shuttle not to climb up which was worth it as the walk is steep and long. Buy tickets in advance the lines are crazy long. The tour around Sintra was nice and we visited several palaces. Found a great itinerary online and able to get through seeing the top sites. The National Palace is a must. We did a self guided tour which worked out very well.

Lots of wealth in the royal familys summer palace. Worth visiting, very beautiful view and contains personal belongings in the inner area.

Palace in itself is quite big and takes time to roam around the whole inner area. History has been very well kept with all the signs. Views of the village from the balcony were a thing to watch. Movement through the palace was swift and guided. All basic facilities and knowledge boards which kept us involved with the things that we were looking at.

We brought a ticket at 17:50, but no one told us that palace was closed by 18:00! So personnel followed us into each room and closing doors behind us. But the castle is fascinating! It’s not so royal, as you can expect, but there is a lot of exciting stuff there. Unfortunately we were unable to visit the gardens, due to time restrictions.

We visited on June 29 and it was everything I dreamed it would be. Magical, beautiful, and fairytale like. The garden is so beautiful and we were lucky enough to have a live orchestra playing as we explored the property. lt must have been some sort of kids summer music camp, and they were wonderful! A day I will never forget. 🎶

Beautiful grounds. Very hilly. Had to w round for the palace. Im mine and my family opinion ( if your not that Interested in Portuguese historywould bother going! Beautiful views from the top to look at!

Great views, lovely architecture, slow progress once inside as not much space. Preferred the outside.. Great gardens. Long queue for food and drink so take some with you.

This is one of the most beautiful palaces in Sintra. I love the royal touch from each room that I walked into. Very beautiful interior design, garden and spectacular view from the palace. I would recommend that you visit the palace before 12:00 and from 15:00 its not crowded. The staff members at the palace were proffesional and nice.

The place is located in downtown Cintra. There are not many people. The best place in the palace is the dome. Its beautiful. It is worth paying 10 euros only to view that dome.

The inside of the palace is quite nice and very well decorated. Definitely worth a visit. The inside and the garden are both interesting. You can also get a view of the town from the balcony.

The Palace is pretty, has some nice items and anywhere else it might get a higher rating, but it pales in comparison with the nearby Pena Palace and Monserrate Palace. Still a very nice visit if you have the time.

Really well narrated storytelling, the Palace is well worth the 10 EUR admissions. A beautiful place well preserved and well maintained.

The palace was quiet compared to the Pena Palace, so we enjoyed having the place to ourselves . The tiles are amazing. Lots of different very old tiles in the rooms. And the ceilings are incredible. The Hexagonal room is a real wow moment as you come into the room. Highly recommended. Buy the combination ticket with Peña Palace to save money.

Its okay,but not to fountain abbey,not a lot of things to see and photography except walls with very good tiles and good ceilings,other wise very little in furniture.

I enjoyed it but I was expecting a little more. There wasnt very much to photograph, there were some lovely ceilings and quite a lot of tiles.Some rooms had a little furniture in but some had none.

We left inspired.Gorgeous, well maintained, and easily walkable experience.Each room is more grand than the next.The gardens alone captivated our attention, and became the perfect picnic spot the view of the mountain behind us.

Not to be mixed up with the palace of Pena which is on the mountain! This palace is way nicer to visit and there is a lot more inside. It foes not have the same views as the other palace but it is way more accessible and interesting. This palace is for those interesting in learning a bit more about the Portuguese royal family. This place is not a tourist trap and brings people a lot of new and amazing facts about the Portuguese royals. When in Sinatra this is a must!

Absolute must see in Sintra. The palace is very well preserved and tells a story of multiple generations and families living there over the many years. I definitely recommend getting the tickets to go inside

Visited in September 2021 and had a great time traveling throughout the palace. Surplus of great architecture and views from different areas in and outside of the palace were really picturesque.

30 minutes walk up the hill through a beautyfull forest to a palace from the fairytales... take your time here to enjoy the views. I loved it.

Sintra is a charming, with its hills, natural scenery and majestic pine forest. There are some whimsical palaces, extravagant villas, the ruins of a 10th-century Moorish castle and also a breathtaking coastline. A must see. Make sure you are not feared of heights and very steep narrow roads.

This place is honestly amazing, a must visit, the pictures dont even do it justice! This aint the first time Ive been but I have to say, the COVID restrictions and the masks and barriers etc etc for going inside are a nightmare, were here 30th march and it was rammed, think we were stuck inside for like 15 minutes without moving at one point - dread to think how itll be in summer when its actually busy!! Just a heads up.

It’s always enjoyable to walk the paths designed long ago by others. I’m always taken by the thought that people so notable in their lifetime become nearly forgotten. For that reason I enjoy paying homage to those who came before.

Great place but the queues and crowds are mental. Try and go on a weekday and remember to buy tickets online! Park only tickets will give you access to the terraces and grounds which in my opinion is good enough.

Very nice excursion for day trip!Picturesque city very close to Lisbon with traditional style. You can see that they have retained the traditional colors (yellow and red-pinkon the outside of the buildings. There are also many houses with geometric tiles that are very nice!In many houses you will notice that there are paintings or tiles that have the Virgin Mary with Christ or even a saint (this indicates that this house is catholic)All of Portugal, so this part also has influences from Egyptians and western countries.

This palace is in Sintra town (not the colorful Pena Palace on the hill some reviewers are posting aboutand worth a visit. I had few expectations going in, so was surprised that it was somewhat a collection of palaces (or built in phases), and the rooms varied from a bit bare to utterly spectacular.Tip - Make sure to look up at the ceilings throughout as they vary significantlySignage - Good signage in English and Portuguese throughout. Each room had at least one paragraph of info like when it was built and why the name. Some also had bigger signs that showed where the next section of the palace was in highlighted map form, and brief update for when/why built.Not busy - We were surprised by how empty this palace was compared to Palace of Peña - there were few visitors and even fewer workers throughout. We found it peaceful but we’re very surprised.Tickets - we bought them on the spot and had no wait or issues.

Had a very fun day in Sintra. The four of us went there by train on a sunny day in january. Hiked our way up to the castle. Smoked a joint on the top while looking at the great view. After that enjoyed a long and a late lunch. Fun little day out.

Nice visit, you go from room to room, with explanations on panels for each one. 10 euros for adults, no discount for student (a pity). The visit lasts approximately 1h. Not the most beautiful palace, but it carries for sure a lot of history.

Its a beautiful place, You have many options to arrive, unfortunely we had something call tuc tuc by someone call Diogo who have promised us a travel that he havent completed, just be careful about that, enjoy the Ginja with chocolate and cherries and the trevesinhas in the piriquita its a good option.

Compared to the other Palaces I’ve visited this one seemed quite small somehow. It was still very beautiful but at the time I went (December 2021a lot of the rooms/areas were under renovation. The art and history is still totally worthwhile but it is quite the trek up the hill to get there. The views of Sintra are amazing.

Beautiful unique palace with stunning views of the national park, the coast and towns around. Beautiful botanical garden is a great escape from the crowds. Just a great place for a day visit. We ended up spending over 4 hours there but is definitely manageable in an hour.

Amazing and unique place! Be ready to spend 2-3 hours easily! Beautiful photos! Be aware of crowds! We noticed that crowds go down later in the day on the contrary from what were told (go in the super early morning to beat the crowd).
