The famous pagoda in Yangon and Myanmar. Its better to visit at night than in the daytime if you want to be relax and peaceful. But at night be careful on the way to there. And the pagoda will close at 8 PM.

This is a very famous pagoda in Yangon. It was made by gold and so beautiful in the evening or in the night. There are a lot of local residents.Ticket for foreigner is 10,000 kyats and free for local visitors. You shall wear polite dress. If you wear anything too short, you can borrow another dress from management board (it is free but you need to deposit 5,000 kyats). There may be some local tour guides chasing you. If you accept their service, you need to tip them. They will said that it depends on your heart but they usually mention about 50,000 kyats (a bit high). However, if you don’t enough money, you can give 20-30,000 kyats, it is ok.

Update:11 July 2022I have visited on 10 July 2022. The entrance fee for foreigner is MMK10,000 (SGD7.57)(USD5.39)(MYR23.87per person!🤨The amount may be small to others but it is unfair to have price difference between locals and foreigners.👎🏻Afterall, Shwedagon Pagoda is about the same as other Pagodas in 🇲🇲Myanmar, 🇹🇭Thailand, 🇰🇭Cambodia.

The Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon, MyanmarThe golden pagoda honors Buddha and rises to a 98 meters height. Shwedagon Pagoda is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar, as it is believed to contain relics of the four previous Buddhas of the present kalpa. These relics include the staff of Kakusandha, the water filter of Koṇāgamana, a piece of the robe of Kassapa, and eight strands of hair from the head of Gautama.

Yangon (formerly known as Rangoonis the largest city in Myanmar (formerly Burma). A mix of British colonial architecture, modern high-rises and gilded Buddhist pagodas define its skyline. Its famed Shwedagon Paya, a huge, shimmering pagoda complex, draws thousands of pilgrims annually. The citys other notable religious sites include the Botataung and Sule pagodas, both housing Buddhist relics. ―

Incredible place. It was an amazing and unforgettable experience being there.I got flu and fever last time when I fly to Yangon and kept feeling unwell those days, even though I have taken medicine and injection. But I felt the energy flowing from my feet to my head after having taken hundreds of steps to the temples walking under big sunshine burning my bare feet.My body temperature turned to normal that evening when I back to the hotel.

THE Landmark of Myanmar, probably the most important place-of-interest in an otherwise boring Yangon. Beautiful pagoda and compound, with 4 entrances for you to choose from, although foreigners are usually ushered to take the elevator near the East gate parking lot. Foreigners need to pay about US$8 or MMK 10,000. For a first-timer, it would be great if you can hire a freelance tour guide (usually they will loiter around the elevator lobbywho can tell you many interesting stories about the Pagoda. Tips are usually US$10-15 for a 1-hour tour. Enjoy!

A very beautiful and large temple complex. Must spend here at least a morning or afternoon. In the summer, I recommend to visit in the early morning or late afternoon from 3pm. You have to take off your shoes when entering the ground. I went alone so there are many things & rituals that I cannot understand, I had to search info afterward. In spite of that, I still love the atmosphere and how the Myanmar people pay respect to the Buddha. Unluckily I could not see the shining diamond and rubies on the main stupa. A must see highlight in Yangon.Visited in March 2019

If you come to Yangon, no one will stop visiting here, like the center of Buddhism in Myanmar. Although it is a peaceful and calm scene where the devout Myanmar people worship, for example, Masanobu Tsujis "Underground Sansenri" was a nightly air strike by the Allied Forces during the Pacific War, and this huge golden pagoda was sought after. It is also observed that the bombing caused a stunning appearance and terrible beauty, but it is a relief that can never be imagined from now on ...

The Shwedagon Pagoda, or Golden Temple, in Yangon, is considered the most sacred temple in Myanmar. There are sacred treasures kept for Buddhists, which are eight hairs of Buddha Shakyamuni. When the sun goes down, the entire temple shines with fantastic golden light. It is very quiet. Going to the temple wearing long pants and a long skirt is not revealing.

I visited Myanmar several times and whenever I can, I made the visit to Shwedagon Pagoda as well.As I usually come here for work, I only have a very limited time and of course I managed to visit the famous Shwedagon Temple although I just got a chance to visit it at night.Myanmar is indeed potential in terms of tourism .And visit to Shwedagon Pagoda is indeed a must when you come to Yangon, Myanmar.Coined as the landmark of Myanmar, the Pagoda is situated in Singuttara Hill..no wonder you can easily spot this jewel-studded pagoda even from afar...Built firstly by King Okkalapa looong long time ago, a shrine believed to house the holy hair pieces of Buddha, has continuously expanded into one of the holy places for Buddhists. It is an incredible temple indeed. As you stepped in, you would line up for tickets, took off your shoes and went through a tunnel before welcoming yourself in a huge courtyard full of beautifully adorned temples, statues, and relics. As it is a highly sacred ground, no shoes, socks, and sandals are allowed. It opens from 4 AM in the morning (definitely for monks and those devoted prayersuntil 9 PM, but I guess the foreigners can only visit this place starting from 6 AM.Apalagi setelah tau bahwa stupa yang ada di Pagoda ternyata terbuat dari lebih dari 8000 batang emas! Ada sekitar 10 ribu batu mulia, mulai dari berlian, safir, merah delima, giok dan topaz! Another wooow indeed. No wonder this stupa is incredibly famous for beautifully capturing the ray of the sun, particularly during sunrise and sunset... too bad I missed it.I visited this place before the pandemic. But I believe they do apply the health protocol here as well now.

I think you could spend days here without getting bored as there is so much going on. My last visit was over a decade ago, and the photos I have added are even older, but I want to go back again when I can. Shwedagon changes depending on time of day, and Id recommend several visits to enjoy it in all the different lights. There are lots of Buddha images, nats, various animals (both statues and living), and all manner of statues of mythical creatures. There are a lot of very good books about Burmese art and architecture (for example by Dr Elizabeth Mooreand a bit of reading before you go will add to your enjoyment. Finally, if you stay long enough, youll probably be adopted by a Burmese family wholl want to share snacks with you.

The great golden pagoda. A magical and mystical place you must not miss. Tourist have to pay a cheap ticket to get in. Having a guide may help you but the atmosphere is anyway charming. On the stairs towards the summit, you will find many shops. Be aware that you must be barefoot straight from the beginning of the stairs!

Most sacred Buddhist place Pagoda in Myanmar. A wonderful place to visit. The Pagoda is covered with Gold and shines when sun rays fall on it. There are long corridors with shops on both the sides leading up to the entrance. There are four entrances on the 4 sides i.e. East, West, North, South and there are multiple levels upto which you can drive your car and take entry into the pagoda (if you want to climb less stairs, go upto to the top level). They also provide maps when you pay the entry fees to guide you inside the pagoda. There are corners for each day of the week i.e. Monday corner, Tuesday corner ... corresponding for people born on the respective day. I highly recommend to visit in the evening and stay there for around 2 hours so that you can enjoy the view at daylight as well as when the Pagoda is lit up by artificial lights. The Pagoda can be seen from nearby places and when the morning sun rays falls on it, the scene is really worth watching.

This was my first visit to Myanmar (Burmaon a business trip in 3rd week of July. Very humbling experience and one cannot miss this massive Pagoda from a distance of 5 kms .Travel Notes : However would like to share few things if you are looking to visit the place , so you are well accounted .My hotel was already pre-booked at Park Royal , Yangon. @ Rs 8200 per day/ $ 120/per day approx including breakfast. The e-VISA was about $70 for business . Tourist VISA is about $50 per person per entry. You can also go for VISA on arrival though might take a longer time when you arrive there because of long que. Rest I just exchanged a $100 bill at the airport to get about 1,50,000 KYAT . The flight was from Bangalore - Bangkok -Yangon - AIR ASIA - Journey time of 9 hrs . Avoid flying this airline , as it is an airway loot. Most of the flight attendants ask to pay in cash Thai Bhat and even water you have to purchase. Extremely rude to passengers. Very unlike when you fly in in domestic Air Asia circuits. If you are travelling from India - Fly through Kolkata - Indigo and Air India have daily flights to Yangon and it is just Two hours and is way much cheaper and faster. The Taxi from Airport to the Hotel was about 20,000 KYAT which is about 20kms. Most of the TAXIS are 2nd/3rd hand Toyota, Mazda, KIA, Hyundai and Suzuki Petrol Automatic. And yes most of them use iPhone. Very well behaved and helpful. The roads are amazingly clean and well laid with lots of greenery. No Garbages to see.Food - Lunch and Dinner vary between 5000 KYAT to 15000 KYAT and Burmese food is a delight with their various ranges and simplicity. A beer is about 3500 KYAT with the local Brands and 5000 KYAT with the foreign brands. Most of the tourist places are within 5 -10 kms range , and would not take more than 5000 KYAT. Yes , at this Pagoda the entrance fee for a foreigner is 10,000 KYAT. If you are looking for a holiday at this place , will definitely recommend that. There is a lot to discover this place and the monuments. At Shwedagon Pagoda , Yangon, Myanmar - this 2,500 years old Shwedagon Pagoda, which enshrines strands of Buddhas hair and other holy relics. Located west of the Royal Lake on 114 -acre Singuttara Hill in Yangon, this Pagoda is the most sacred and impressive Buddhist site for the people of the Union of Myanmar. From a humble beginning of 8.2 meters, the Shwedagon Pagoda today stands close to 110 meters. Shwedagon Pagoda is covered with hundreds of gold plates and the top of the stupa is encrusted with 4531 diamonds; the largest of which is a 72 carat diamond. It is clearly one of the wonders of the religious world. Shwedagon Pagoda is a repository of the best in Myanmar heritage – architecture, sculpture and arts. The Shwedagon Pagoda consists hundreds colorful temples, stupas, and statues that reflects the architectural era spanning almost a 2,500 years. To understand this monumental work of art and architecture, visitors will experience an insiders view of this magnificent symbol of Buddhism to the lives of the Myanmar people.Shwedagon Pagoda forms the focus of religious as well as community activities – the bustling of devotees and monks washing the statues, offering flowers, worshiping, and meditating. Shwedagon Pagoda is administered by the Board of Trustees of Shwedagon Pagoda.

I really like this place. I usually go there at least once a month to pay homage to the Pagoda. Its a big Pagoda glistening in gold. Its also the trademark of Yangon as well as the pride of Burmese people. Its a historical, archeological and cultural place. When you go there, you need to wear clothes that cover your knees. Please stay quiet not to disturb the people praying to the Pagoda. You will be amazed by the size and architecture of the Pagoda Im sure. I put some photos for you to view before going there.

The magical place in the heart of a busy Yangon. I have been there for 4 times already but i still want to visit again. Dont miss the chance of seeing the diamond at the top using the telescope in one of the entrance. Best time to go is late afternoon. Wait until around 6pm for the candle lighting that goes around the Pagoda. Walking around it on bare foot is such a humbling experience. You have to wear something long to cover your legs so you would be allowed to get in.

Ill try to keep this as short as I can with a couple very bold claims: this is not only a must-see in Yangon, nor even THE must-see in Yangon - this is the must-see in all of Myanmar. Next, without exaggeration, spending a whole 2-3 hours in the evening here witnessing the pagodas transformation from sun-up to sun-down, was one of the most beautiful experiences, if not the #1 most beautiful experience, I have had in my travels around the world so far. The glittering gold in the sunlight and then the moonlight, the authenticity of observing literally thousands of Buddhists coming to pray, the chants, the smells of the incense, the tranquility in the midst of all the craziness... it is simply put one of the greatest under-rated attractions in the entire world, and if you are lucky enough to find yourself in Yangon, coming here to see it for yourself should be at the top of your list.Entrance isnt cheap - at the time of writing it is 10,000 Kyats - but it was surely the best 10,000 Kyats Ive spent in my life. You can hire a guide - they will approach any foreigner they see wandering around alone - but I was perfectly content without one. Its best to come prepared wearing full pants that cover your knees, and feel free to take your backpack around with you. No socks or shoes, but that is customary, and with a backpack you can keep them on you at all times for when its time to leave.

It is a must-see in Yangon when you have chance to go visiting Myanmar. The complex of Pagoda that is so huge. It could take you 2-3 hours to hang around. To be honest, the local people deeply believe in their religion- Buddha in any age. That is one of primary reason why there is not any conflict or argument during my stay in this capital.I am really impressed this place as the first spot I visited here that made me breathless with its beauty and religious senescence. The only scam is: during I and my friend was wandering and experiencing the landscape, there was one guy (the last picture with longyitold us he is working at the site, he followed us around and introduce us some simple information that i can read in brochure. Then he quote us 200 thousand Kyats account near 200 usd. I don’t agree then he quote us 100 thousand Kyats. I would aware every one to avoid this bad.In short, every thing is fine here.

Shwedagon Pagoda is probably one of the first things that you will see in Yangon. It will set your expectations high for the rest of your visit to Myanmar. The pagoda is impressive because of its size, history and rich variety of styles that are assembled in one huge complex of buildings and public spaces. You dont need to visit all of it unless you are willing to allocate at least 3 hours of your time. You will be handsomely rewarded if you do. Shwedagon is not just a collection of temples, its also a great place to sit and observe how Burmese Buddhists behave in a religious environment.

Amazingly beautiful. According to legend, it was built more than 2600 years ago which would make it the oldest Buddhist stupa in the world. In reality, it was built much later but it doesnt mean its less beautiful or less important. Its still Yangons most famous landmark and Myanmar’s most sacred Buddhist pagoda and pilgrimage site. Its believed to contain relics of the four previous Buddhas including the hairs from the head of Gautama, the one on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. Believe it or not, its a real must see when youre in Myanmar.

One of the amazing places to visit in Yangon the capital of Myanmar, which speaks about the culture, tradition, belief and richness of the country. One of the oldest stupa in the world dating back to 2600 years. Visitors can enter from any of the four entrances, but the main entrance has lifts which takes you to the level from which you could walk to the same level as the main courtyard. The beautiful Pagoda is 99m tall and covered with gold all over, with precious stones hanging on the top. Gautama Buddhas strands of hair is one of precious relics kept here. To truly enjoy the place and understand the various stories behind the things there, its better to hire a guide who could walk you around.

The most amazing temple I have ever been too. Cost $8 per adult. It’s free if your from Myanmar. No foot wear allowed need to leave it at the entrances. Shoulders and legs need to be covered. This place is massive so nice to sit in the shade and watch the world go around. A local tour guide can be hired at the entrances cost $15 per group. I think it’s worth doing that if there is a few of you as nothing written in English.

An interesting mix between tourists taking pictures and locals here to pray and/or mediate.Entrance is not cheap compared to the local life (8’000kbut that’s definitely worth it.Same with the guide (optional, negotiated at 15’000k for 2who is going to explain a lot of things and answer your questions. You can come with shorts, they can lend you a longyi for a 3’000k refundable deposit.I’m not sure how to get there by public transportation but once again Grab will be your best friend (2’600k one way from Sule area)

A superb landmark that’s visible across the city and the icon most people picture when thinking about the city - you can’t really not take a close up look! Unfortunately while I was there it was undergoing renovation work so was covered in scaffolding, however the golden glow could still be seen clearly and I can only imagine how impressive it is normally. It’s quite easily walkable from the main downtown area, along a fairly well paved main road; it’s crossing the main road right outside which is more of a challenge!Even without going inside the main building there’s plenty to admire from the outside, with the ornate roof and loads of statues and sculptures. The chants from inside can be heard on the surrounding steps and are a reminder of the significance of the site. If you do have the time though ensure you venture inside since you won’t be disappointed.

You won’t miss this Grand Buddhist Temple at the Center of Yangon. The temple is very prominent and easily accessible. It’s both famous and the local and the tourist. It’s free entrance for local and Kyat10,000 for foreigners. Since it’s a sacred worship place, ladies need to wear knee length pants or can rent the local long pants to cover up the knee. This is a fantastic Pagoda - a must for all tourists to get acquainted with while in Yangon. Unless one makes a full tour of the premises its majestic nature will not be appreciated. For Buddhist tourists from round the globe this place is of utmost importance as it has Lord Buddhas hair relic safely deposited inside. Evening is a great time to visit as when the lights are on at twilight the place is akin to "heaven" with glittering gold right round. For photographers its a marvelous place to capture beautiful pictures of an architectural masterpiece as well as devotees engaged in various religious activities.
