Abbey founded in 705AD and famed for its Elizabethan tombs and its unique, ornate vaulted ceiling.
Sherborne Abbey in Bridgeport
Description
Stunning place and very helpful staff with lots of historical knowledge.
Attended a wedding here some years ago. Beautiful building.
What a wonderfull church. Please go and visit it
One of the most beautifully preserved and well kept religious buildings Ive been in. Its a very beautiful place to be, and I really do enjoy popping in from time to time, sit down and just being in a peaceful and relaxing place. Staff and volunteers are always kind, and its a very friendly environment. Do donate to support this wonderful abbey.
MoreGorgeous simply gorgeous. Amazing architectures and tombs and detail amazing. I swear people get down and keep donating we need to keep this beautiful abbey maintained every day.
MoreAmazing building with impressive ceiling. Really impressive ceiling. Wandered in randomly and didn’t regret it. Free to enter so make sure you make a donation. Friendly volunteers. No parking for public but a short walk from parking specs and shops.
MoreA stunning abbey, steeped in history and free to come and explore! You simply cannot miss it when in Sherborne, go and see.
MoreIf I were to judge the place on the architectural features and stained glass its five stars. The Abbey is a place of worship and judging it on the basis that a church is the people not the building its a one star. Note to the three elderly ladies loudly discussing If they needed to replace the flowers by the door - that matters not. Instead actually acknowledge and talk to the visitors instead of ignoring them. They may be in need
MoreBeautiful place was welcomed
Lovely peaceful mid morning visit...very relaxing!
Wow! The ceiling is just stunning! What a beautiful church. Sometimes I feel that 5 stars is not enough.
MoreThis is one of the best Abbeys in the country we’ve been. The fantastic 13-15th century ceiling of the abbey was a highlight of our visit. Love the stained glass windows and wood work in the abbey is amazing. So much details. Abbey is free to entry. Parking nearby is free for two hours. High street is nearby for coffee and tea and cakes. We had a pleasant afternoon here.
MoreWhat an amazing piece of history. The workmanship of the building is incredible especially the ceilings. If youre visiting the area its a must see.
MoreFantastic piece of architecture. Peaceful place to worship or visit.
Amazing place to visit. So much history around it not just an Abbey.
Classic calming experience. Most impressed with the mobile mirror in the nave that affords amazing views of the intricate roof architecture
MoreGlorious building very interesting ceiling steeped with history set in a beautiful location, if you are in the location its well worth a visit
MoreBeautiful Abbey Church in a beautiful, peaceful town. Some stunning tombs, stained glass and ceiling decoration.
MorePopped into Sherborne for the first time en route to Stourhead. Stumbled upon its lovely abbey. Its free to enter, though donations are, of course, welcomed. Guided tours are available from the friendly volunteers if you want to know a detailed history. Quite ornate inside with ornaments and brass plaques, stained glass and a bible holder on the lectern in the shape of an eagle.Lovely coloured exterior with flying buttresses and a well kept lawn in front.
MoreWell worth visit. Loved the details in the roof.
A beautiful church that is worth a 15-20 minute walkthrough to see the earliest fan-vaulted ceiling in England, organ, stained glass windows (and more). There were helpful 1-2 page paper pamphlets in several languages available for free, which gave a brief history and key elements to see. There was also a volunteer welcoming visitors who could answer questions as well.It is free, though cash and card donations are accepted and appreciated! There is no parking on site, but several lots and one-hour street parking nearby.
MoreBeautiful Abbey well worth a visit , and free to look around
Extraordinary fan ceiling, definately worth a look, and you dont have to pay an entrance fee or fight crowds like the one at Kings in Cambridge
MoreMy favourite. Amazing place
I am not in any way religious, but this "mini" Cathedral is a must see. It never ceases to amaze me at the dedication put into building this construction. I do not think we, now would get anywhere near this nowadays. The people who maintain it must also be very dedicated just to keeping it going. Lovely atmosphere, stained glass is beautiful and such a lot of history to see and understand.
MoreVery pretty place, little one loved it, was a good history lesson for my Daughter. Architecturally amazing.
MoreI have been many times in Sherborne, but never seen the Abbey . Its so impressive and amazing historic places . Also I have learned a lot about it and I heard very interesting stories about the kings , history and community .
MoreBeautiful building with very informative plaques put though out and especially helpful staff.
MoreBeautiful stained glass windows!
This is a beautiful and stunning church with much to interest the visitor. Outside on a sunny day is has the most beautiful colour stone to admire. The internal view from the west door is sublime and I think taking advantage of a guided tour (or buying a guide bookwould engage one even more with this splendid place. There is a small gift shop across the Green too.
MoreNice Abbey. No dogs allowed in the grounds which makes it difficult to visit. Had a very quick walk round.
MoreWhat a lovely place. So glad I visited it. Full of history and so beautiful in places. A very warm welcome on arrival and well worth the visit.
MoreBeautiful history and magnificent architecture.
A stunning Abbey in the centre of Sherborne village. The location at least has had a church of some kind in that spot for over 1300 years. What stands there today is a beautiful Grade I listed building that encompasses a mish mash of architecture over the ages, though most of it dates from around the 1400s and the restoration of 1850..Worth a visit.
MoreAbsolutely amazing. A beautiful example of English gothic with a lovely fan vaulted ceiling.
MoreVery pretty looking pieces of copper standing out nearby. Magnificent style worth the trip and tour. Fantastic range of services and access to the town which is splendid. The stones are part of the local style and given extra poignancy by the copper highlighting which focusses the eye o. Particular moments that invite prayer, from memorials to articles of faith.
MoreIm not normally interested in entering religious buildings but this abbey is stunning inside. Simply beautiful.
MoreAmazing place. One can feel the history soaking up through your feet. Shame we missed the guided tour.
MoreProbably one of the finest English Abbeys Ive ever visited, well worth making the effort and time to call in, allow at least an hour to take in all the history or for simple contemplation.
MoreOnly visited twice, each time has been a peaceful, sunlit, illuminating experience. To think that there had been a religious presence here since the year 705. As I said, illuminating. Also the burial place of two kings of pre-England. Try it, you will be rewarded. Nice town, too.
MoreBeautiful Abbey and very interesting place x
What a wonderful place to visit, everywhere was well sign posted tourist information very helpful and friendly.Recommend Olivers! Great place home cooked food! .😊
MoreWent to see the Moon exhibition there which was amazing and the Abbey is beautiful, well worth a visit
MoreAmazing very beautiful and held the moon for a while. Would definitely visit again x
MoreBeautiful inside and out, check out the amazing fan vaulted ceiling for starters. Sherbornes jewell in the crown. Home to the heaviest set of 8 bells in the world. A must see for any visitor to Sherborne, or resident for that matter. Just stunning. #DorsetMoon is an amazing addition.
MoreA great place, The architecture for this structure is unique and shows the hard work truly put into it by the locals. The general are is friendly and helping.
MoreIt is one of those places you don’t plan to visit, but if some reason you are already there, you just ask yourself, why I haven’t been here before 😉😊 the Abbey is world class!!
MoreAbsolutely amazing. A working Abbey with beautiful architecture dating through the ages. A real piece of history.
MoreThis is as beautiful as most cathedrals. Sandstone masonry reflects light with amazing colour stained glass and ornate carvings. If you Google sherborne abbey it has amazing history and this is reflected in the building and monuments within and the most amazing thing these days is it is still free to enter for prayer or just as welcoming for those who just want to look.
MoreLovely had a 23ft Christmas tree at the back of the Abbey lovely nativity really peaceful to sit and reflect
