I remember enjoying it. Beautiful setting. Have not been recently.Less traffic then, mind you !
Staff was absolutely lovely. Roast was nice, but the lamb was very fatty which I thought was a shame. Potatoes were crispy but a bit tough. Sticky toffee pudding however was probably the best I’ve ever had!
Good produce and warm, cosy, comfortable atmosphere, but preparation and cooking distinctly average, fairly disappointing considering the price point they’ve decided to reach for (notwithstanding the cost of living crisis), especially when taking note of recent roast dinner experiences at other pubs with higher overheads.
Excellent village pub, what a gem! During our ramble along the South Downs we booked here for lunch on Saturday. Very popular, good reasonably priced menu, we both had chicken curry pie which was lovely. Extensive beer selection. Friendly & professional staff made our lunch time most enjoyable. Would definitely recommend this pub.
Fantastic, popular, busy, energetic but relaxing place. Amazing roast dinners, delish sticky toffee pud and wonderful, efficient and friendly young staff. Love this place. Justvwhatvwas needed after a long walk in the south downs.
Stopped off for lunch, after a bit of a walk. Good ales and Sunday roast beef. nice garden aswell.
Lovely and friendly staff that accommodates to everything! Haven’t ever had a bad time there :can recommend the Sunday roast dinner, but definitely book in advance!
Absolutely beautiful and old style pub looks magnificent and perfect place to spend your afternoon/evening. All the staff were very welcoming and super friendly. Food was exceptional and super delicious and so the dessert was super delicious too.Absolutely recommend to everyone.
Great food! And nice walks around the areaParking can be difficult but you can get lucky
Location is good although parking is limited. Food was reasonably priced and choice of Sunday roasts. Not sure about the beer.
Lovely country pub with large garden. Excellent food and service and impressive choice of draught beers
I have always driven past but never had the opportunity of stopping and enjoying such a lovely place. We opted for the Sunday roast, it did not disappoint! We had a beef and a pork roast and our son had fish and chips. Beautifully cooked, plenty of sides and good portion of meats, Yorkie was good too! Has outdoor seating at various points, lovely garden tucked away to the right of the pub through car park with its own bar. Great selection of lagers and ales. Highly recommend a visit!
I was extremely impressed by the attention and respect they gave towards my food allergies (quite a few!). They really took the trouble to investigate...even coming back to me to say the oil the roast potatoes were cooked in had soya in it. This is SO rare and so hugely appreciated! A delicious meal in a wonderful garden...thank you!! xxxx
Delicious food and lovely ambience. Took my little one there and she loved the fish and chips and wed highly recommend it for toddlers! Yum! Definitely coming back! ❤️
Excellent food, great menu, something for everyone, beautiful spot, staff friendly, service with a smile, rolling hills behind, just wonderful, wish I could have stayed the night! Lol b and b needed xxx
Sunday roast was decent quality but a bit on the steep side (£19.50 lamb/pork).
Sorry Guys but mediocre roast today which came before we had a chance to sip our drinks all a bit rushed.Dont sit in the lean to on a chilly day as meal will go cold very fast & you will freeze.Sit in main pub building. Our server was very nice and helpful though.
🧭 Meanderings 🗺️🐑 For my Birthday Adventure on Sunday last we cycled through Chalk Lands to a picturesque Public House - The Shepherd & Dog of fulking. You may ask, has she gone mad? How pub can be picturesque? Well, it can be and see it yourself!⛰️ Located at the foot of National Trust South Downs and surrounded by magnificent nature with Fulking Spring running through the pubs grounds.💚 Now, if you are into history then you will find plenty of it! Pub consist of two Grade II listed cottages that became a public house In circa 1800s. The name ‘Shepherd & Dog’ goes as far as 1841 according to the census. You can find more about its building and name history on their website!💦 But thats not all - you can find a Grade II Listed Water Pump designed by John Ruskin himself and drinking fountain!🍺 Albeit, if I were you I would have a nice pint of local beer and cider and mostly scrumptious meal at Shepherd and Dog rather than water!🐕🦺 The place is dog and children friendly with different areas depending on your gusto. A chalk terrace above the road, back terrace, Children playing area, and my favourite... Benches and tables across the stream...🌿 If you love nature, just as I do, then this is a perfect place for you! The stream is one of the rarest and richest habitats - a Chalk Stream! And the area is surrounded by wildflowers and bees!🧆 But remember - book your table if you want to get some delicious food of theirs! They are very popular! And despite us not liking crowds, this place has so much space and such a merry atmosphere! Definitely my favourite!
Always a joy to visit when the sun is shining! Food is good but quite pricey for the size of the dishes, in line Brighton prices, Service good and friendly.
The pub is located at the base of steep hills that comprise part of the Sussex Downs. An idyllic setting, complete with a running stream.I predict that the car park will fill up fast at the weekend and on Bank holidays replete with the latest Landrovers, Volvos etc.Punters are cheerfully served with £16 Burgers with Chips, and £5 pintswhich can be consumed in the garden whilst the kids play on the swings. My advice is to go mid-week when the kids are back at school to enjoy the quiet ...Alternatively, there is The Royal Oak just up the road or The Plough on the other side of the A23.
Lovely pub, great staff and lovely area 🙂
This is a great pub, popular with walkers and outdoor people. Very good service from friendly staff. Beer and food also very good, though on the more expensive side. An extensive range of beers to choose from. Lovely atmosphere inside.
Great country pub atmosphere with the sound of the spring bubbling away outside and the view of the Downs. The staff are super lovely and the menu is creative and tasty with loads of gluten free options. We love this pub!
Beautiful little pub and lovely food the other half loved the shepherds pie. Going back again soon
Beautiful pub, nice staff, perhaps the food was a little pricey .
Lovely smiling staff . Good range of beer . Limited menu but understandable at this time of year . Not a complaint merely an observation the burger was smothered with a very overpowering and rich bbq sauce. Couldnt really taste the burger ,perhaps serve the sauce separately so the customer can add as required ?
Absolute gem of a pub in a lovely location, all the staff were cheerful, professional, friendly and nothing to much trouble.8 of us had late afternoon Sunday dinner and every single meal was scrumptious, if you are in the Brighton area I can highly recommend this pub, best to make a booking as really busy.Either before to build up an appetite or after to walk the food off, make the climb up Faulking hill the views are superb.
A comfortable and romantic proper pub. Kind staff who will go above and beyond for you (even if you turn up on bikes late as the kitchen is closing). The food and beers on offer were sensational.Great views of the S downs and situated in a lovely small village.Loved it
Hands down one of the best Sunday lunches I have had in a long time and the added extras were definately worth getting especially the truffle cauliflower cheese!!The pub itself is lovely and quaint and the staff were really attentive and just super nice. The food came out quickly despite there being A LOT of people and high demand.Being a gravy goblin I always need more than Im given and they grabbed me more no problem, and a good amount to...got to love a pub that isnt stingy with its gravy.Would highly recommend this place to anyone.
Rural pub set in beautiful location at the foot of the South Downs. There is parking but at busier times parking on the road might be necessary.Pretty unspoilt period interior. Good selection of drinks, including local brew. We are a bit food and the food was lovely, not fancy but with enough of a twist to make it interesting and very nicely put together. Reasonable prices. Great service. Nice atmosphere. All in all a really nice experience.
Great little place! The spring at the entrance makes it feel so idyllic in the times of the pandemic. We sat in the garden, the staff were lovely and well the surrou dings were so calm and tranquil.
Lovely pub. Big outdoor sitting area :)
Excellent. We had a delicious Sunday roast and fish and chips 😋
Really loved this place, lovely ambience and the kitchen smelled amazing. We arrived at 5pm and didnt pre book, but they found us a table even though it was a busy Sunday afternoon. We just had drinks as they needed the table back within the hour, but we would love to return for food. They are taking Xmas bookings now!
We went there today with my family for drinks, a walk around and then eat. When we ordered pints came as halves but couldnt be bothered to send them back. Walking in the hills is really something to do.Food is to avoid, first of all vegetarian dishes are as, or more, expensive than meat ones.2nd the sides tasted like it was made a while ago and then microwaved. Roast potatoes as hard as stones couldnt stab my fork in it.3rd and last for the price, the portion and quality was disappointing.
Just left and can honestly say we had a great time, food was excellent and staff members amazing.
Such a lovely pub lunch hidden gem. Not wanting to our standard weekend in town (Brightonwe ventured in the country side a bit for a fantastic lunch. We arrive just as several groups and it seemed almost everyone had booked, which you needed to do. We were greeted and sat by a friendly and funny man and knew quickly hed worked there for ages. Hubby had a beer drafted by the pub and I enjoyed some seasonal mulled wine. To start we have a camembert bread dish which was amazing. Meals were their special lamb roast and their signature burger. Both were outstanding. As full as we both were we had to have their bread pudding special and oh my that was delightful. Great place for Sunday roast, next time well bring the walking shoes to burn off some of the yummy food.
Excellent pub set in idyllic surroundings, down single track roads in the base of the South Downs. Our visit happened to be during steak night, which I would highly recommend. The staff were very knowledgeable about the various cuts of meat and the best ways to serve it and made very welcome suggestions whilst discussing our tastes.I would recommend a visit at any time, but if you can, align your visit with steak night for an even better meal!
Brilliant Sunday Roast, quaint English pub on the downs. Book before going as always busy, you will see why when you experience the food. Highly recommended.
Friendly staff, amazing beers and incredible views if you want to take a hike... Lovely garden too 😊
Very, very good food. A must visit if your in the area. Went for a drink in the middle of a walk and could not resist going back there later that evening and the next day.
Fantastic food and service for Sunday roast.I visited the Shepherd and Dog for Sunday roast in January 2019The food was delicious roast lamb and roast pork. I would highly recommend the pub and it is worth booking as its very bus.The sevrice was exceptional and all the food was superb. I had the osfest roast lamb lots of perfectly cooked vegetables giant Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoesA toffe and apple crumble tart with clotted cream and custard for dessert was delicious
This is a fantastic pub in West Sussex. One of the best beer choices for a country pub. Staff are amazing too and always friendly and welcoming. I havent eaten there so cant comment on food but it always looks fantastic when it comes out of the kitchen. I did try their bbq last week at the beer festival and that was very good. If you enjoy great beer and great food get down to the Shepherd and Dog.
Always a lovely event coming here. The food is stunning, staff are helpful and the garden is beautiful!
The village and the pub are very special and quintessentially English. The pub does amazing food and great beers and theres a wonderful garden with its own bar and separate barbeque menu. Well worth visiting.
Lovely garden dining and BBQ area, very fresh local ingredients in a beautiful country setting. Food was excellently presented.
Nice pub and garden serving BBQ platter style food in the garden in summer. Beer and cider are good, and the prices are decent. Set in a lovely quaint village, spoiled a bit by the abundance of parked cars going to the Devils Dyke nearby. Great stream and play area for children, and dog friendly in the bar and garden.
Best roast dinner Ive ever had! The beef was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere is always lovely. And the staff are super friendly and helpful too!
Tucked away at the foothills of the south downs is this country pub with character and fantastic food! Warm welcome by the landlord, and fabulous dog walks. Also dog friendly. Rugs available for sitting outside in the evenings, plenty of candles to add atmosphere and general mood for chilling with friends and loved ones.
Came here for Sunday Lunch with friends! Had the most delicious Sunday Roast ever! Our waitress was absolutely delightful. The food is excellent! Advisable to book ahead.. way ahead!
